New Zealand begin Day 5 on 4/1, with 280 more runs required for victory. Tom Latham (2*) and Will Somerville (0*) at the crease.

Will the Indian spinners wrap up a routine victory on the final day or could NZ spring a surprise?

As per Doull, cracks haven't gone as big as it was predicted.

IND 345 & 234/7 d
NZ 296 & 53/1 (21.2) CRR: 2.48
Day 5: 1st Session - New Zealand need 231 runs

NZ will be disappointed if they can't save it on this pitch from this position. If wickets are in hand then in the last session even chase should be on.

The Nightwatchman has given NZ a huge boost by playing so many overs and also scoring runs. 28 overs are done.

Both teams have produced a great test here. NZ twice had a commanding position and then Indians came back. Now again NZ is playing well.

NZ is somewhat playing like a champion team! Somewhat better than other S, E & A teams!

Looks like this is one of the best wickets produced in India over a decade. Assistance for quality pacers, quality spinners and you get value for runs too if shown applications.

Don't know about the best, but a very good test wicket. Pacers and spinners, both had their time here. Nothing is unplayable even on the 5th day if you apply yourself. Far better than those rank turners or green mambas ending the match in 3 days. Anyway, I like even those wickets because that makes cricket interesting.

I have not seen this match live. It's wonderful to hear such thing about this pitch.
Let's see if NZ can ultimately able to draw this match whether India revert back to their strategy of rank turners or not.

NZ should win this game from now on .pitch is pretty good for batting

Still good pitch to bat on...New Zealand still have outside chance to win...wont be easy though

Posters who blaming it on pitch for 1st Inning New Zealand collapsed nowhere to be seen

Nah, this pitch hasn't broken up as much as I thought it would. Thought it would be unplayable with cracks everywhere.

It is one of the best pitches produced over a decade anywhere in the world.

Top quality spinners- Ashwin and Axar taking wickets and top quality pacers, Jamieson, Southee and Umesh taking wickets. Also, runs on board if you apply well like Tom Latham and Shreyas Iyer shown. Also, runs for the likes of Ashwin and nightwatchmen, Saha and Somerville proves it further.

Hence it required BEST players like Rohit, Rahul, Pant, Bumrah to improve chances of winning and not that its home test match so we can win with anybody playing! Also NZ is proven BEST team by ICC... So it should have been BEST contest! But unfortunately only the pitch seems to be BEST...! (at least)

Jadeja's lack of bite as a bowler is really alarming. He hasn't taken a single 5-for for last 4-odd years.

Last time he took a test 5-for was against SL in 2017 and that too was very expensive one, 5/152.

Of course he missed the bonanza of Motera in 2 tests against England being played there. But even in this test he often looked totally toothless.

This should be Ishant's last test unless he does something drastic in his next few overs.

Brilliant contest Between bat and ball
Latham is one gritty batsman man..m expecting some twist in later part of the day

not necessarily. I agree he is not going that well in this test. But on bouncy saffer wickets he is a must. He was ok in eng, just the 3rd test he wsa off color. I'd back him to get back with a bang come Saf series

This is going to be draw. Kanpur, Gwalior and nehru stadium poona true and tradional patta wickets, slow low and boring.
On the flip side, had we won, the internet would again be groaning with home pitch, home conditions the usual fridge load. The same narrative will never be said about other parts of the SC whenever tests are played there.
Bring on bombay, give a little more bounce - let jazz boom rip at them.

Cracks are not opened due to winter effect, even 5th day pitch is good to bat.
They should have scheduled in South India

India really missed a trick by not accelerating their batting earlier and giving their bowlers an hour last night. This should have been a comfortable win.

The issue i have with that is that your skills should be against the bowler's skills and the pitch not a crack on the pitch.
What i feel so bad about indian wickets is we always have these slow, low bounce and at times uneven bounce wickets, throw in the cracks and our spin guys become unplayable. And We and our media go to town to brag to all and sundry.
The best pitches i have seen consistent in a whole series is India vs SL , india's tour of SL in 2015.
All 3 tests had even bounce, fantastic carry to the keeper on 1.5 days, then easy for batting for 2 days or so and spun lots on last 2 days. The most important part was that the BOUNCE was EVEN.
It made for good compelling cricket.
India vs Australia - Dharmshala 2017 was another similar wickets.
When we win on such wickets, i feel these victories carry more merit.
When we win on wickets that has cracks, i do feel its the pitch and conditions beating the opposition , having said that we still have skilful spinners, but its a pity when external conditions rule.

Now Taylor and Williamson.

This partnership is crucial.

I fear it is a consequence of Dravid's conservative outlook on cricket. Kohli goes on about intent, and I've never seen him get defensive in a situation like last night.

Ross taylor looks like he's not refused too many second helpings of NZ pies and puddings.
Has put on a bit, much like Rohit.
Hopefully, does not last too long.

God Mode '16-'17 Ashwin would have devoured this lot by now.

He doesn't even seem to be trying to throw his carrom ball any more. pain.

suppose one good thing to come out of this match is that Shreyas' emergence should put an end to that champu, Rahane.

Nonsense no-balls in the last ball of every Jadeja over.

Then of course the umpire can't spot it right away so the third umpire brings back the match mid-way through the ad break...jeez.

Last 10 overs: 11 runs, 2 wkts

Nz has high chance to win this match compared to India.

But Williamson defensive approach sucks, he is too defencive while bowling and batting.

I find it so strange that NZ wouldn't at least try to keep taking singles to stay in range of the target. Not only does it mean it gives them a chance to win, but also keeps India worried that the target can be chased which will help NZ chances for a draw.

Edit: Just as I said that Ross Taylor got out. I could see it coming a bit. When all you're doing is defend it can sometimes lead to you getting out cuz you're not playing your natural game.

Ashwin has been immense entire test, with both bat and ball. His returns with the ball don't actually show how good he is in this test. So many variations! How can one single bowler produce so many variations?

Taylor is awful vs spin.

Williamson is the key though. If he can bat 200 balls,

very interesting now

blundell and jamieson are capable of playing over a hundred balls. nichols needs to step up

Williamson will have to bat better than he has for months to save this for the kiwis, otherwise India have it because the other batsmen look clueless.

Nz had a great chance to win this game but they ended up just digging a big hole and now trying to crawl out.
They have batted super super slow on a pitch that is not having anything alarming in it

Very interesting. NZ will do extremely well to hang on for the draw, and reconfirm that they are the best test team in the world.

Unlucky way to get out but don't mind any luck coming our way.

NZ should play simple cricket. They are v capable of playing 80 odd balls here

Probably should have drawn this, but the team did better than I expected.

Kane was pretty poor was his tactics this match. Let India get away twice and the second session today is probably going to cost us the match.

Can't blame the toss for this, there wasn't a significant advantage since the pitch didn't break up as most Indian day 5 pitches do.
