What's new

India 39/1 at end of Day 4 as they chase 420 to win the 1st Test against England

This game should be a draw but you never know.

England have a small chance.

It should be a good day 5.

First session is the key tomorrow.

If England scalps atleast two in the morning session, then it'll be extremely tough to save the game as Rahane is a dud against the turning ball and Pant is not the one who can make 30* (170).

Well said.

I see only two possible outcomes. England wins, game is over 90% in their favor, or India wins, far fetched and will take tremendous effort but not impossible. I honestly don't think we can deadbat for 90 overs straight in India. You are right, first session will set the tone for rest of the day, we need something special from Gill and Kohli-Rahane both are due big ones.

Ashwin and Sundar to play out a draw.

Who should have bowled according to you? He attacked England like he had a lead of 200 runs . opened with Ashwin, bowled Ishant and bumrah at right time to break middle order. He did bowl nadeem on a leg stump line in end to delay proceedings which was well within his rights. England had to make the call. Now you watch match and understand the nuances

Hard to type long texts when I'm traveling but here you go:

1. Started with 2 spinners which was fine as they get purchase from new ball.

2. Once Nadeem was off color, the should hav gone to sundar or a pacer. Sundar has the bounce factor. You know when he came to bowl.. 45th over I think lol.

3. Bumrah was introduced too late. When he came on, he was he got Joe root out.... By that time root had done enough damage to the spinners

4. Nadeem leg stump line started after a lot of runs were given by him lol... Even then it wasnt quite working.....

5. Even towards the latter part of the innings, his bowling changes were baffling with no sundar and persisting with Nadeem who was getting carted..

Its not about choosing bowlers.... It's about course correction...

And that part Kohli was just awful...

Let the game drift for too long..

I dunno if you followed the 2017 series but same happened...

Ashwin sucked but he kept ashwin on for long periods of time...

Then jaddu came and took a 6fer...

Another test reverse happ tho I can't remember which test if series that was..

175 all out might look good in spread sheet.. But we gave away too many too fast....

Had eng fought hard for this, and >t wud be one thing but this was some baffling captaincy with inexperienced bowling....

Yes I am aware of eng hsving the liberty to take risks which is why I am talking about course correction being poor...

And following Kohli career this ain't the first time...

Eng may still win this test, but horrible play from Eng in the last session. Batting after 2 days was poor as well, but I could understand it them fearfully to lose the test despite having a big score, but they could have scored faster to put the same total. Dead batting in last sessions and killed 15 overs. Not sure about thinking behind it.

India will find it hard to save this test, but Eng has made it a bit easier for them. India may still try to chase if they have plenty of wickets in last sessions, but odds of them chasing it very low.

Bumrah bowled 6 freaking overs I just checked...

No wonder

And he looked bloody good in a few of them

One major point is Pujara will go for his runs. This is India and here he bats at good rate, takes on spinners who will bowl most of the overs anyways.

If someone plays a 80 balls 90 type inning, India stands a chance to get close to the target.

Underrated comment. Pujara actually bats a pretty good click in India and I personally think we'd lose if we shut shop and try to deadbat all day. We desperately need Kohli and Rahane to go big for us to have any chance. Can't always expect Newbies like Gill and Pant to do the job no matter how talented they are.

Forget Pujara, and pant.

Buffet is india's biggest match winner. :D

Agree with posters here.

Dead batting this from ball 1 will result in a loss.

Play positively and if needed dead bat last 20 overs or the last session.

65% chance that England will win.
30% chance of a draw.
5% chance of Indian win.

This probably will be England's best chance to win a Test in this series. It will not be easy though when the ball goes soft.

England may win this match but definitely not the series! Nadeem & Rohit the weak-links will go out after this match!

Just realized the dependency we have on Jaddu while playing India can’t believe it.

Rohit will not go out. Nadeem will be dropped for Kuldeep/Axar. Expect one of Bumrah/Ishant to be rested and Siraj comes in for next test. The third test is pink ball test after all.

I honestly believed India could win at the Gabba, but I don't believe we can chase 380 odd on the last day here. Either England wins or it's a draw.

Gill will play an eye catching knock, but lose concentration.
Pujara will hold an end tight for a while, but get out to a great delivery.
Kohli will struggle to get going and perish.
Rahane will gift his wicket.
Pant will get out playing a high risk stroke.
(All above just blind predictions)
I dont expect India to win, will depend on Sundar/Ashwin for a draw. An England win looks more likely with their spinners doing most of the damage..

:ashwin

If England win it’s going to end up being a really exciting series. That’s what happened in the 2017 Aus series in India. India will have to chase the series and play attacking cricket.

I think India will have a strong partnership, but then collapse very quickly , with one spinner getting more than a 5 ver here

exactly !

India has lost 4 out of last 50 tests played in India.

1. SA , Nagpur 2010
2. England, Mumbai 2012
3. England, Kolkata 2012
4. Australia, Pune 2017

This can become the 5th one and make this series interesting.

Eng has to stop thinking about losing the game. They have been thinking about it from the start. Rather than trying to win after being in a dominant position, they have tried to make sure that they don't lose with even 1 in 1000 chace. If Eng bowls well, Eng has a very good chance to win here.

Thinking about Gaba or team chasing 400 is useless. You can't start imagining 1 out of 1000 chance and play based on that. If it happens then it happens, but you don't play thinking about it.

Eng played a very disappointing cricket in the last sessions yesterday.

Worst attitude to have.

They should have confidence in themselves.

Play to win, you have put yourself in the position to do so with your hard work, don't throw it away in fear of losing.

I find that those who play not to lose, end up losing because the opponent can sense the fear and lack of confidence.

Exactly. Hopefully, Eng plays to win tomorrow and make this series interesting.

Indians learned the hard way in Pune about the double-edged sword that a bunsen burner is.
Yes what u say is true. But check the wicket in the fourth test of that same ind-aus 2017 series - in Dharmshala. That wicket had fab bounce, even carry, spin on last 2 days. All in all it was a perfect wicket and a fantastic template for Asian subcontinental pitches. I recall Wade was taking it around his ears off the bowling of cummins, hazlewood etc. And India won there. I donot recall any praise given to our pitches management guys, just the usual bagging when india win at home - ie 'doctored' etc. My point is since 2015-SAF series in which those pitches were a disgrace to cricket, there are very occasions on which we have had pitches in which ball turns from first day first session. Most pitches in Indian home series are pretty sporting. Give credit where its due.

India will target victory and not just survival on the final day of the first Test against England in Chennai, says seamer Ishant Sharma.

The hosts closed day four on 39-1, chasing a Test record 420 to win.

"If we get a good start, I am sure we can chase this down," Ishant told Channel 4.

"We have a fearless batting line-up. We are very positive so it's about how we start and then we can think about how we go through the game."

If Pant stayed for 20 overs or so, will take India to victory. Gill and Pujara have to give a 100 runs stand to build on.
