What's new

India close Day 2 of the 4th Test at the Oval on 43/0 trailing England by 56 runs

It all depends on how India bat next innings, they will have to do much better than they did in Lords (3rd innings), because this is series decider!

Not sure how many runs Pope will finish on, but he’s played extremely well in these tricky conditions and a pressurised match situation.

Yep...he's the future of eng batting, so's malan - i enjoyed his lazy elegance....

@ Bhaag Viru Bhaag, Pandya would have bowled much better than Thakur on this pitch! What's your take :)
I know you have a set of players whom you like and the other set which you hate always!

I don't know why Shardul is being persisted to bowl ?? Is there any pressure on Kohli from BCCI because Shardul maybe related to someone higher up ? He literally has zero teeth in his bowling if anything it is taking whatever momentum India had or has left

Thakur is just a straight up & down medium pacer, his bowling reminds me of Paul Collingwood. This stuff is money for old rope for English players with county experience.

He is bowling because you cannot burn out other bowlers! That's why he did not feature in previous 2 games.

LBW missed with Bumrah's yorker! Strange! No appeal and no DRS

Kohli actually does spend money on old rope. He keeps it in a warehouse in New Delhi in case of an international rope shortage.

Both Pope and Pant are same age. The expectations are so different from Pant though.

They both are still young and a long way to go.

Lol he was dropped bcs he wont/cant bowl in test..

Umesh has bowled some ripping deliveries to take wickets but his economy rate has been quite expensive at the same time, going at more than 4 an over.

I have a feeling we will have to wait for the second new bowl now. By that time, England will have a good sizeable lead to hurt India if they don't bat superbly in next inning.

Shocking India let England off the hook at 62/5. What went wrong?

Yes looks nothing special on the face value but, has been getting wickets in tests so far. Has 11 wickets in 3 tests at an average of 22.

Just goes to show how much Indian cricket do you follow. :))) :inti

England will have to bat last here so I wouldn't count my chicken yet, if india gets 180 or more to defend in the last innings then anything is possible

What a stupid shot from Moeen Ali lol, throws his wicket away. He was looking pretty solid, good conditions to bat and take the game away but he has allowed India to make a comeback.

I dont think englad will be safe even with a lead of 100 on this surface.

Another 50 partnership from Pope-Woakes, Pope-Robinson or Woakes-Robinson could be hugely valuable here, would see England near the 300 which might well be the magic number on this pitch.

A really nothing delivery.
Yeah, a really ineffective cricketer this guy is on pitches that don't suit him. And look, this is his 5th consecutive test on such pitches!

Such a disgrace Kohli is!

Awful and unnecessary shot from Moeen.

A punchy little inning from Bairstow at no.7 was expected which suits his batting style. He looks out of place in the top 5 with trying to force the ball all the time.

Pope doing really well.

A good partnership with Woakes can knock India out of the game but anything under 300 and India will be the favorites.

Honestly a game between 2 sides both trying to outdo each other in how crappy they can be.

Some really good bowling in the series tho.

It all lies on Indian Openers how well they bat (like they did in 1st two tests). I think fresh Bumrah after Tea (and new ball after 10 overs) can finish up the England's innings. (I guess Max. 70 runs lead). So its up to Indian batting (if they can bat whole day tomorrow, of course with both openers staying today) is what required!

India is already out of the game .now just formalities left for England winning

SHANE WARNE tells Sky Sports Cricket that the entire series could hinge on the next session…

“This is still evenly balanced – don’t forget, England have to bat last. India should be pumped up for the first half hour or hour after tea to try to knock over these last couple of wickets.

"If they then go on to have a 55-60 run lead going into tomorrow then they are right in this game.

"But if England have a great session and get a 100-130 run lead, then suddenly India are in trouble.

"This session right now is the most important of the whole series so far.”

Horrific start to the session for India there, 13 runs off the over and giving Woakes a start.

He used to be good when he could really choke the runs but with him being a fifth bowler, he barely bowls to create either enough pressure and is just negotiated by the opposition knowing he is not going to be bowling much.

England's run rate is so good. By the second new bowl, they will most likely get close to 100 run lead.

That's exactly what i said before Warne did. :D

The pressure that Ashwin created on other end helped Jadeja. Both compliment each other and batsman often try looking for runs off Jadeja and end up giving his wickets to them.

Note for all:

Do not refer to Moeen Ali or any other Muslim player as "Beard" etc

Thanks

And that is in Asia or maybe WI and it will still happen in India. It's not like Jadeja has lost his mojo.

England are extremely lethal in these conditions with their MVPs back - Stokes and Woakes.

He has lost his mojo.

Looks a pale shadow of himself.

I wanted prime Ashwin and prime Jaddu as 2 spinners.

This Jaddu will only work if he bats really really well.

Outside Asia, they played a few games together and got success. Should have persisted with the duo if conditions aren't overcast or expected to be over 5 days.

Me and warje think alike. :P

Was he ever successful in SENA to begin with? In Asia, he is still good as pitch does half the job but in conditions like these makes him inept.

Yes.

He bowled well in Eng and Aus 2018 tours.

Picked a 4fer in Sydney 2020 first inninhs when Ashwin went wicketless.

He keeps it tight and waits for mistakes.

Subtpe variations in pace, flight and angle.

These days he hasnt been working on his bowling it seems.

He didnt look great in Aus 2020 too but Jaddu rarely looks great but gets results so that went under the radar.

Ashwin would have been a far better choice even as a lone spinner here. Think 90% people agree to it apart from Kohli.

Oh no :( Pope misses out on what would have been a deserved hundred. Unlucky

Sydney Test.

Aus were 205-2 and then he came and got 4 wickets and took the run out of S.S and Aus were bundled at around 330.

Oval the perfect spot.

Could have bowled dry...both of them.

They compliment well together. Two spinners bowling in tandem and bowling different style to the batsman is never easy. Here, Jadeja alone is not as effective.

If the conditions are overcast, it becomes a different thing because the totals are generally 200-250 and they won't bowl many overs. But on Melbourne, Sydney or Oval type wickets, they should play together.

I think England would need atleast 100 to feel safe.

60 odd isnt that big.

Its all psychological at this point.

The two tests in Australia come to mind only. I may be wrong though.

When we bat we need a giant innings for a change.

Not this 150/6 stuff.

Indeed.

Warne was talking about picking a team for the whole game as opposed to day 1.

Ugly swipe by Robinson.

Wonder if England can get maybe another 20 runs.

Not a huge lead considering Eng will have to bat last, India would like to take that last wicket asap
