India close Day 5 of the WTC final at 2/64, leading New Zealand by 32 runs

all it takes is a one session collapse , seen plenty of those in my time in England, dont lose hope just yet

190 over ( weather looks perfect only problem is light at the end of day ) are lots of on this pitch to get a result here.

It's still raining, this is day 5, we may get a day tomorrow...no time in the game for a result.

Shouldve been played in Aus atleast we know it wont rain lol

Off season in Australia, Nz & South Africa during June- July . only available place are England & Westindies. Westindies is best place for both team To play WTC Final as a neutral venue considering Nz advantage in England due to similar condition.

India should be awarded trophy based on more points/winning. Its unfair to share trophy when the gap is 100 points.

ICC is a braindead, intellectually incapable organization not fit to oversee the game of cricket.

I mean how idiotic can they be to choose ENGLAND as the venue when they know it will rain.

On what merit was England even chosen as a venue? And instead of playing this iconic game at Lords, they're playing at Southampton either way. It is truly a miracle how an organization like ICC has managed to survive when their intentions are only to collect revenue for themselves.

Even if there's an off-season, surely the ICC has the power to host the WTC Final in AUS/NZ/SA if it doesn't interfere with the domestic cricket happening at the time.

It's a shame the West Indies wasn't chosen as a venue, it is the most balanced venue considering both teams and their relative strengths.

I don't have a problem with England being the country they decided to play in, but at least pick a venue where there isn't any rain.

‘Just creating the doubt in his mind’: Laxman explains how Indian bowlers can get Williamson's wicket early on Day 5

Laxman, who has observed Williamson from closed quarters during IPL, opined that the Indian bowlers should make the New Zealand captain lose his patience and play a ‘false shot’.

The Southampton weather has finally shown some mercy on Tuesday as India and New Zealand will take the field on the fifth day of the ICC World Test Championship final. Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor will walk out to bat and resume innings on 101/2 against Virat Kohli & Co at the Rose Bowl.

Indian pacers will be desperate to dismiss this Kiwi batting pair as soon as possible. Meanwhile, former Indian batsman VVS Laxman has suggested a plan to get rid of Kane Williamson who is one of the vital cogs in the New Zealand batting line-up.

Laxman, who has observed Williamson from close quarters during IPL, opined that the Indian bowlers should make the New Zealand captain lose his patience and play a ‘false shot’.

While previewing the fifth day’s play on Star Sports, Laxman said, “The speciality of Kane Williamson is he takes long followed steps. He lands on the crease and doesn’t chase away from the body. So, bowling in that corridor of uncertainty early on, almost forcing him to play the drive, which he doesn’t do and playing with his patience. And while doing that, probably from the ball 1, from outside the off-stump into Kane Williamson.”

Assuming we get 196 overs from here (98 overs in 2 days), how can the respective teams win:

NewZealand:
Bat whole day today with a run rate of atleast 3.25. Get a lead of 250 by end of days play and then try to knock India out tomorrow. Even if India takes marginal lead, Kiwis would expect to chase it down.

India:
Get the remaining 8 wickets of NZ atleast by tea today. Bat till lunch tomorrow with a run rate of 3.5+...send Pant at no.3. Take a lead of around 175 and then have a go at Kiwis in final 2 sessions.

Just dont want to see a timid draw.

It might be at best 90 overs today and lets face it, it looks the players will opt for the most likely outcome (draw) and play safe.

Have been saying this for long. On what basis was England chosen as the venue to host this WTC final? Another braindead and biased decision from ICC.

Pretty sure Shastri/Kohli will go for a win. Similarly, Kane Williamson is also a brave captain as we seen on the 1st test against Eng. But lets see.

Bumrah still bowls at good pace, the problem here is he is not a swing bowler but seam bowler.

NZ would look to not lose more than 1 wicket till lunch. Then post that, try and score at 4 RPO.

India need 3-4 wickets till lunch.

This itself should not be a problem. Ishant is swinging it more from the other end so it is still difficult for batsmen to settle into a predictable rhythm from both ends. They need to battle different elements from each end.

Didn’t the Indian bowlers cop a bit of criticism on their lengths on the previous day of play? Lengths seem good today given their relative strengths.

Today it looks like their lines are too wide (Jasprit) or too straight (Ishant).

Said this when IND took to the field. Pant’s keeping and IND’s slips cordon will be under a lot of focus.

This and the delta between the number of runs scored by Ishant, Jasprit and Mohammad vs those scored by Tim, Trent and Neil may play a big role if it continues to be a low scoring affair.

Excellent over from Shami despite conceding a boundary in it.

A wonderful example of how Kane’s more comfortable negotiating the outswinger but can be quietened down with the well directed indipper and a good leg side field.

IND 217
NZ 117/2 (60.5) CRR: 1.92
Day 5: 1st Session - New Zealand trail by 100 runs

Moral superiority - lies with whom at the moment?

Very poor batting from NZ. They need to up the ante and take hold of this game. What is the point of batting at 1.9 run rate?

NZ are ahead at the moment....India needs 2-3 quick wickets to have any chance

Williamson channeling his inner Pujara.

14* (88)

IND have been good in terms of not letting the game slip away. Lengths are not too bad today either. Lines needed to be improved and seems the correction is in progress.

The pitch looks greener compared to 2nd day. May be the moisture beneath the surface has led to some growth

Man this could have been a cracker of a Test match if not for the youknowwhat..

Shami has almost sorted his length.

Has to sort out the line now for williamson :))

Too much off.

One concentrated spell from someone with good support at the other end and wickets will fall.

Will make the game interesting.

Cmon Bumrahhh

Williamson doesn’t mind sharing the trophy it seems. Shami is on fire

wickets continue to fall, runs really not moving whatsoever, couple more wickets and some IPL style batting from india later on today could make it a really interesting last day

Good pressure pays off. Momentum is shifting now, a couple more wickets and NZ are in trouble.

kohli needs to calm down a little runs towards the crowd and makes silly gestures every time a wicket goes down, looks like hes talking to the only few kiwi fans in the stands.

Both Shami and Ishant get wickets with good length deliveries. Once again, bowling full is overrated unless there is significant swing.

Nope they didnt.

Shami was touch on the full length to get the wicket.

They showed the pitch map.

Ishant should be end of good length...edging full length.

Not sure about ishants delivery.

There is a difference between full length and overpitching.

And yes full length will go for more runs but chances of wickets rises.

The sweet spot is the half part of full length close to good length maybe.
