What's new

India close Day 5 of the WTC final at 2/64, leading New Zealand by 32 runs

The ICC barely has the appetite to host/pay for one test. You think they will fork out money to play three?

But they went through the trouble to organise such a championship why not go all the way, we would avoid such situations and also more likely to find an undisputed winner, otherwise this doesn’t feel like an accomplishment which is bigger than winning the Test mace

Kiwis going for shots now...good to see both team giving everything and not settling for timid draw. Brilliant spectacle.

The great KW has been and will be India's nemesis. He got out cheaply against ENG bowling in the 1st test, but he relishes the Indian attack.

New Zealand's fate rests in De Grandhomme's hands.

If he can buckle down and play a mature inning, then New Zealand has a chance at making a good score and creating a decent deficit.

Usually, De Grandhomme's batting isn't associated with the word mature, but we'll wait and see.

I think Shami will end up with a 4-fer, he should try and get as many chances to bowl to De Grandhomme as possible.

lol.. Kaake vekh le.. Conditions or no conditions wickets are taken.. Unlike getting overhyped and smashed to pieces in Australia/NZ and even England
Nikkeya zyaada uchalan Di lorh ni.Yet you can't win in these countries apart from Australia obviously.LOL.

Gavasker making big deal of a standard fielding effort by Jaddu.
India in good position they need to keep grips with new bowl or momentum can shift easily.

Pretty obvious, but IND will need to ensure they do not go searching for wickets. NZD are on the backfoot anyway.

NZD will likely want ~30-40 quick runs regardless where they come from on the wagon wheel. The mistake to avoid would be to leave the flourish too late like IND did.

NZD will need to continue to play some shots. IND made the mistake of leaving the flourish too late.

Another potential benefit could be to not let the new ball bowlers settle down into a rhythm quickly.

IND need still need not go searching for wickets and magic deliveries just yet.

Sharma needs to pitch it up a bit more, allow the ball to swing a bit and perhaps target Williamson's pads.

You making it sound like winning in Australia is easy? You do realize right its the toughest among all SENA countries to win?

India should target Jamieson's pads, he's a tall bloke so it might be harder for him to defend on a leg-stump line.

If Pujara played the same innings williamson is playing, indian fans would be after his throat

I don't think this approach is working from NZ. They should try to slog the remaining 50 runs otherwise it will be just a matter of time. I don't think the likes of Jameison and Southee have the defensive techniques to survive the Indian bowlers for too long on this pitch.

Will Jameison be our nemesis in batting as well ?

He's taking the doubles quite nicely, and all New Zealand need is someone to buy time with Williamson.

However, I don't think Jamieson will make anything above 35 runs given that the ball is still new and moving about.

Hmm....still have a better record in NZ and eng than you guys have in Saf and Aus....the consecutive tests record -stufff of legends says hello

Courageous decision to exclude that bit of static noise from the snicko. Pretty sure not everyone following would realise why.

This has been an exceptionally solid innings from Williamson against a very good bowling attack in tough conditions.

There would have been a lot of controversy if that call wasn't umpire's call on hitting the wickets and thus overturned by the third umpire while the spikes on snicko were ignored.

Not sure that snicko could be ignored there.

True....has looked assured and relatively comfortable inspite of the tough batting conditions and good bowling.

Will be interesting to see if he can change his tempo...

LOL Pakistan have won 6-7 series in New zealand.how many series have India won in South Africa

That doesn't qualify as disturbance, if you looked closely there was some deviation even before the ball came close to the bat.

These 2 should be able to get NZ a handy lead of 50-70 if they bat properly, the wicket is not a lot better with the sun out.

Williamson getting praise for a strokeless innings (thus far), which if played by the likes of Azhar Ali or Pujara would have provoked howls of derision.

Indeed. The first frame showed some disturbance, however the frame after (prior to the ball reaching the bat) also showed a flat line.

I feel it was static flaring up but courageous call nonetheless due to the flat line just before the ball came near the bat.

Yes, I saw, but given that it was umpire's call onfield, the third umpire has to give the benefit of the doubt to the batsman. One can't state with any certainty that the ball missed the bat in this instance.

Had Bumrah been remotely effective, NZ would've been all out by now.

Jamieson doing what Jadeja was supposed to do

Jadeja left it too late. When Ashwin fell, Jadeja should have started from the other end.

Given IND more or less have three Number XIs, he really needed to go.

If India had a lead of 80-100, they could have probably made a victory push but now unless something crazy happens this will probably be a draw.

It's because the conditions here demanded such an approach, Kane is not a strokeless batsman like Azhar or Pujara, he can score at a fair clip.

Azhar/Pujara bat at the same tempo regardless of the conditions/bowling attack...hence they get criticised and rightly so.

What happened to Jadeja? Barely a presence in this match - bat, ball or fielding.
His selection for this game was wrong to begin with.

Hope he proves me wrong in NZ's second innings though.

Shame, jamieson was looking really good. Couldve made another very crucial 20 runs .

He has saved NZ

IND’s openers should not unnecessarily play out dots and bide their time. The blueprint is pretty much there for these conditions.

Been a very good knock from KW. Driving has been so difficult and conditions today after pitch was covered for entire day yesterday were extremely difficult

India have once again proven why they're comfortably the best test team in the world.

These are literally the only conditions where NZ are slightly better than us and here we are going blow for blow even after losing the toss.

Now imagine an India vs New Zealand final in Dubai or Dhaka... :)

Whatever man India certainly can't win from here. There is still slight chance of new Zealand win

There is a more than 75% chance of draw unless both teams collapse, which given in sunny condition now is out of question

Trent Boult can swing the bat, they should be able to get a 50 run lead here still I feel.

Shami has bowled really well today and will deserve the fifer he is likely to get later. Bumrah has been tight but looks ineffective.

Just because he smiles and as per people deserves to win only for that

It's no better than the innings played by Rahane for India on Days 2/3, just cause Rahane got dismissed through a stupid shot doesn't mean it wasn't a good innings under the conditions.

True. Had NZ played a single series in India during WTC cycle, they won't have played the finals. However despite us losing 0-2 in NZ, we still had more points than anyone else going into the finals.

New Zealand ought to have toured the subcontinent more than once this WTC cycle to compensate for how many home series they got.

Ya and also now he is playing under a bit of sun as opposed to Rahane who played full innings under cloud cover

This overhyped ugly action bowler can't even pick up tailender's wicket.LOL

He's out of form, yes, but he is comfortably better than our "talented" quicks.

At least he isn't going at 5RPO like our supremely talented Naseem Shah.

You really have to wonder though, why India is struggling to find a fast bowler than can perform in NZ and NZ type conditions against NZ.

This goes back to the days of Kapil Dev, who used to dominate in the WI & Aus but come NZ he was terrible.

Strange indeed.

Didn't you guys lose 2-0 in NZ? India has been impressive here but why are you pretending like that series didn't happen lol?

NZ would get swept in India while India got swept in NZ.

The problem with the match scenario is that India have everything to lose and nothing to gain at this moment.

Bowl out NZ for 220, NZ have the chance to skittle India for a very low score and chase it down. They have about one and half days to do that.

India bat badly, they lose the test. India bat well, they still don't have enough time to win in the last day. If there had been an extra day, India would have a day to bat and day and half to bowl out the kiwis. But with just one day remaining, India have little chance to win the match. But the kiwis if their bowlers are on fire, India could be bundled under 100 and chased down.

Anyways I like how Indian fans are already claiming moral victory since actual victory seems to be out of reach. Congratulations guys!
