Australia hope to strengthen their position at the top of the ICC World Test Championship table as they take on India in the second Test in Melbourne on Boxing Day.

Overview:

Australia v India, 2nd Test
Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne
Saturday, 26 December – Wednesday, 30 December, 10.30am local time, 11.30pm GMT

Plenty of team changes were announced by India who received a mauling in the first Test despite being ahead in the game heading into what turned out to be the final day. They are without skipper Virat Kohli, who is off on his paternity leave, with Ajinkya Rahane due to lead the side.

Shubman Gill is in for Prithvi Shaw and will open the batting on his Test debut. With Mohammad Shami ruled out, Mohammad Siraj is stepping in. Siraj has played for India A in Australia, New Zealand, England, West Indies and South Africa and has a fair bit of experience even if not at the highest level.

Ravindra Jadeja was seen having a go in the nets full tilt and will play as the all-rounder and second spinner, fulfilling the role at No.7. He would effectively be Virat Kohli's replacement in the XI.

Australia, on the other hand, have all but indicated that they would be fielding an unchanged playing XI.

“I’ll be a pretty courageous man to change the playing XI this Test match after the last one. Unless something happens over the next few days and that can in the world we live but we are going with the same XI,” Langer said ahead of the second Test.

Australia will be banking on their pace attack to once again keep the Indian batting line-up, in the absence of stat batsman Virat Kohli, silent.

Remember the last time:

Things unraveled pretty quickly for India in Adelaide on day three after a morning session that saw them lose eight wickets for 16 runs. That said, it's worth remembering that India had done reasonably well to push themselves into a position of strength prior to that with the ball.

Steve Smith being dismissed for one in either innings and the form of Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah are some positives for India from the last Test. Australia, meanwhile, will be chuffed by the remarkable comeback they made, but like India, their batting looked pretty ordinary in the first Test for the most bits.

What they said:

Nathan Lyon (Australia spinner): "We spoke about him [Cheteshwar Pujara] in depth before the series started, it was good to see a couple of plans come off in Adelaide, but we've got a couple more things up our sleeve hopefully that if he does get in we can put in to deploy."

Ravi Shastri (India head coach): "[Umesh] Yadav has the experience. Saini is young and fast. Bumrah, one of the best in business. Siraj is an exciting prospect. You put up runs on the board and watch these fast bowlers hunt the opposition. They can beat Australia in their own den."

Forget about everything else. I just feel like it’s mentally too difficult to come back from the events of the first test, for India

We have made sure this test will last at least 4 days by giving India a flat pitch.

But Smith, Marnus, Paine etc are going to score tons of runs, Smith and Marnus are due to score 100 each.

And then Starc, Cummins, Green, Hazelwood, Lyon are going to set to work smashing these Indians

I called it months ago we are winning this series 4-0, Indians already making excuses, what a joke.

Did you just open this account to rile up Indian posters here? If yes, honestly you are doing a very poor job at it because not many taking your bait.

Who is making any excuse for our defeat? The only excuse we keep on hearing is from Aussies that their defeat of 2018 series was only due to Warner/Smith not there..bla bla etc.

When was the last time Australia won a test series in India? Atleast we won in 2018 and have a spirited fight in 2014 unlike the meek surrender Aussies did in India over the years.

I know you are riding on the high horse on the back of winning a test at home but you need not bait Indians in every post.

Thank you bro. So kind of you. If you need an IPL contract Aussies should try and decimate India tbh. Not lose to them on purpose.

Actually the great kangaroo team have to prepare flat pitches to beat India my bro.

Preparing proper bouncy tracks like South Africa did in 2018 is extremely risky.

Our chukroo, nostrils would wreak havoc on such deadly pitches.

Australia's best bet to beat India is to prepare flat Pattas bro.

Australia will destroy India badly.innings defeat coming up for the shooperstar goat team India.

We are not a GOAT team bro. Who said we are.

We are goat home bullies only. Away from home we are far from goat. Tbf we always missed key players though and wrong selections. Excuses yes but it's the truth.

Hopefully Pakistan beats n.z in the upcoming series.

Indias plan is to hurt their players if they can't get out. Don't underestimate India. That's all I can say.

My only wish is India bat first otherwise the game will be a snoozefest.

MCG pitches are a joke

The only way this severely depleted team might have challenged the kangaroos was by batting first...now since that is not happening I expect an innings win for the kangaroos if they have any quality in their batting

Toss:Australia won the toss and decided to bat

Venue:Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne

Officials:Bruce Oxenford, Paul Reiffel, Paul Wilson, Gerard Abood, David Boon

Here are the XIs:

Australia: 1 Joe Burns, 2 Matthew Wade, 3 Marnus Labuschagne, 4 Steven Smith, 5 Travis Head, 6 Cameron Green, 7 Tim Paine (capt & wk), 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Nathan Lyon

India: 1 Mayank Agarwal, 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Ajinkya Rahane (capt), 5 Hanuma Vihari, 6 Rishabh Pant (wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Umesh Yadav, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Jasprit Bumrah

Game set and done.

Expect big centuries while India toil out in the sun getting baked.

It's a bold, positive move to play with 5 bowlers, but the toss has gone wrong - now IND will bat second with one less batsman.

Specially they have dropped a batsmen who according to 1 poster is the player of the century.

Bumrah right on the money! Could have had two wickets so far if he had the luck of Cummins/Hazlewood in the previous match ;)

still maintain Labuschagne is highly overrated. Unconvincing presence at the crease

This guy Yadav can't put two balls on the same spot! Can't believe this is the 4th best bowler in India - just shows the dearth of bowling talent

Anyone here watched Sehwag's inning at MCG in 2003/04 tour live? :inti

Brett Lee was bowling express pace and stuck on the head twice...first of Sehwag and then Akash Chopra. Sehwag was terrific on that game but couldnt resist the full toss off McGill and got caught out at 195.

Surprising considering the amount of cricket he has played.

Bumrah has close to pin point accuracy when he is on song

I so hope Bumrah just gives up on IPL and pointless T20i bilaterals. Great bowler!

That was right in his family jewels

Labushange is such an odd guy!

Wade got carried away. Ashwin in wickets again

Lack of support can hurt Bumrah. But there goes Wade who was batting as if he was looking for a IPL contract. :yk

Good old days...great inning by Sehwag.

Next year, Md Yousuf played one of his best knocks 100 on Boxing day against Warne & McGrath.....took Warne apart that day.

Pak was hammered though, let Australia off the hook from 136-5 to score 379 and take a lead of 38, when really Pak should have taken the lead.

Wow! Aussie batting quality w/o Warner is so poor! A first choice Indian team would have done a repeat of 2018 against these guys

Both teams at full strength I reckon India edge them in Australia

Nope. Toss matters in Australia bro. I can't beat myself hoarse about it.

Trust me. At full strength in Australia both are still about equal. Slight edge to Australia if they bat first. Slight edge to India if they bat first.

In pink ball, Australia is the better side. India still needs to develop more.

Spin can't do much and Bumrah can't bowl too long. Aus just needs to bat normally. It's a good pitch to bat.

Byjus 36 fans need to pipe down.

Disappeared all of a sudden a week ago and are back for more.

Finally good for nothing Saha have been thrown out. Hopefully Pant can repeat his 2018 heroics. I don’t have much expectations but at least fight. Adelaide was nightmare that will forever haunt Indian fans.

Kiwi fans should be last to taunt Indian fans. Come back when your useless team win something in India or for that matter a World Cup.

Lol Aus without Warner hammered India like no tomorrow a week ago.

Pink ball bro. Not red ball.

At full strength both teams are about equal. India din't prepare a plan tailored for tests specifically. You don't play odi and T20 prior to major test series

If all factors are equal and both teams are at their best toss will make the difference. They are petty even sides in Australia.

Australia is the much better pink ball team

India will win in India though.

Tbf they knocked us out of the WC and smashed us in n.Z albeit after pointless T20 and odi's

I just want to see a full strength India team play tests first as a priroirty vs Sena and the. Short format. Guarmatte the results will be different.

India will HAMMERED any TEAM in India though.

Fixed.

That was one freak session mate, how often can the aussie bowlers repeat that?
Otherwise they were well behind in the match, even with the Indian superstars dropping like a million catches.

This current match, India would most obviously lose as they have zero support bowlers and no spine in their batting w/o their captain, but that doesn't mean the Aussie batting ain't shocking. These couple of matches have proven how much they rely on Warner (so much more than Smith) and his rollicking starts

They smashed us and fair play to them. But it was their strength to win on green pitches but will cry like a b*** when they show up in India. Last time they came to India were hammered even on green pitch. I dare if they could provide India spin wicket in NZ and see what happens. Worldcup was freak incident too due to rain and two days game, on a regular day we will smash them.

Australia batting first is an advantage but if India bat well in the first innings I think it's game on. Let's see though. Our batting has been quite bad. About time they get fired up

You were rolled over for 36.

You have no right to say anything after a performance like that.
