If Siraj is a no go today... India would be in a hole they just may not be able to climb out off...

Teams with worst middle orders (no. 3,4, & 5) since Jan 2020

WI: 24.91
Ind: 27.72
SA: 28.26
Eng: 37.79

Even much maligned English middle order is doing far better than we are! How the mighty have fallen!

To be fair the quality of bowling has gone up along with bowler friendly wickets over the last few years

I know. Still averaging less than 30 is unacceptable for an Indian middle order, whatever the conditions.

My guess is South Africa will take a lead of around 100. India will set a target of around 150+ and South Africa will chase that down eventually with great difficulty after losing 7 or 8 wickets. It could be a close game!

This might change only if Pujara & Rahane show determination out of nowhere, play out of their skin to save their places in the side!

Looks like a good batting day to me...by south african standards ofcourse

SA need to get through 1st session with minimal damage. However, i can see India bowling SA out for less then 200 today. Game will be a 2nd inns shootout.

It is so fascinating to hear SENAW commentators discussing on the skills of Indian Pacers these days!

Petersen lukcy to survive that jaffa from Bumrah in last over.

Eldgar is batting too slow, should bat positively and look to get runs at a good rate. India batted at RR of 3+ , SA below 2 so far.

I admire Elgar doggedness but how can he not even score one run, it's not minefield out there. He makes Azhar Ali look like Viv.

This is exactly the reason India lost the last series in South Africa! I kept on telling this fact during that time! That series was a mere RR shoot out between the teams in the 4 innings! It was difficult to survive on the wicket and it meant that "scoring the most during your stay at the crease!" India failed at that, at it was exactly the time Pujara was blamed (Kohli pointed it out). That was the start of the decline in our batting and we still haven't taken a step to rectify it!

Thankfully this time around our bowling is even more potent and South Africa's batting has declined! This is the best chance to win a series in South Africa, if we lose or draw this series then the entire blame will go to our middle-order batters! I don't think we will draw this series (unless weather interferes severely!), also I don't think we will lose this series, at the most we will win 2-1. But with this bowling unit we could have easily whitewashed South Africa (what an achievement it would have been). We have to bat utterly poor to lose this series (our middle order is capable of it! And with Pant losing his form it can't be ruled out completely!)

We need to engineer a collapse somehow.

Siraj is still injured he shouldn't be bowling....He is trundling in and his line is wayy off

How costly will Pant's reprieve to Petersen prove? So far it is proving to be very expensive.

Except for Kumble (17 wickets) no other Indian spinner has taken a single wicket at Jo'burg.

Almost 30 overs since last wicket. I am not used to this as an Indian fan. :(

Poor captaincy by Rahul. Should have brought Thakur early. Even the 1 ball he bowled yesterday he looked really good...

All the hard work of Elgar and Petersen undone. SA will have to rebuild now.

And its lunch. Could've been so overwhelmingly SA's session but thanks to Thakur, we can call this session ours.

As per usual you get 1 nice inns from SA top 6 and rest crumble.

This Indian bowling line up can bring india in game from any position .88/1 to 102/4

Looks like a grassed catch from Pant of Dussen, but Dussen didn't review, so it is what it is.

Great comeback by India. Proteas last batting pair now literally.

The massively talented Kyle Verreynne's big moment has come.

"Lord" Thakur seems to becoming like a pace version of "Sir" Jadeja. The more you mock him, the more integral part of the team he becomes! Let's swap them each other for home & away test matches!

Giving benefit of the doubt to Pant but India should reverse the decision. That was a bumped catch alright.

What a Test match to start the year off with!!

Superb, gritty, compelling.

The umpire raised finger immediately. Shoud've sent upstairs to confirm. Could've gone in batsman favour. But it is what it is.

Not watching live but I think Pant can stand one or two steps closer to wicket for Thakur. He isn't as fast as Shami Bumrah or Siraj.

Lol 3rd ump would have gone with the soft signal as it's nothing conclusive for him also

From cricbuzz - we're hearing that Elgar and South Africa's team manager have been to see the umpires, regarding Rassie's disputed catch. Anyway, he's not coming back. The third umpire decided that the catch wasn't conclusive enough to offer it back to the fielding captain.

Not conclusive evidence from umpires of it being not out, else Umpires would have taken it to the fielding captain. That has been ruled out.
For Pant it is hard to know that because he would have felt his hands behind the ball.
So, all in all inconclusive.

About the Rassie dismissal: The front-on replays show the ball to have bounced in front of Pant's gloves. And the side-on replays show the ball to have gone straight into his hands. That's what you get with these 2-dimensional cameras.

This match is balance at this moment but can turn very quickly on either side

This.
So the third umpire has reviewed it and evidences are inconclusive. Even if it was sent upstairs by on-field umpire, it would've come down to soft signal.
And we all know what signal Erasmus would've given. Out it is.

Dussen was not out. I am pretty sure Dravid's team will call him back after lunch.

Dussen would never last too long with that pathetic defensive approach against quality bowling lineups. Elgar and dussen both went out to innocuous delieberies really because of their poor tactics

Counterattack by Bavuma and Verrey.
Score card getting updated quickly.
Time to bring Bumrah.

Really poor captioncy by Rahul .why not bring back bumrah after lunch when both the batsman are new to crease .

one more wicket and india are into the tail. SA batting needs someone to score meaningful runs for once.

Match tilting in south africa favour ,any lead above 40 runs is match winning for them .

This static front foot technique from varryene reminds me of peter handscomb from Australia

Bumrah has been bit off color in this game so far.

Bumrah need to pick up wicket otherwise innings defeat on the cards :qdkcheeky
