India on top in the 3rd Test, finish Day 1 on 99/3 after bowling England out for 112 in Ahmedabad

Not watching the game, could anyone share if batting is still difficult or getting easier under lights with dew?
I hope India at least scores 350-400 to keep 4th innings chase to bare minimum, if any.

Not at all difficult but not flat track.
This pitch is well balanced.

What do you think ideal score India will be looking for?

India should try to score as much as possible, but anything over 300 should be good here. It is mostly poor batting from both sides so far to give wickets.

England should have played another spinner, our spin playing ability is at its all time low.

They missed the trick here. India is looking to get Leach out of the attack by scoring quickly against him.

41(50) partnership -- Runs are coming too quickly.

That’s what I think. Just watch an over and it seems India is easily scoring singles. It looks like ODI game in whites.

Rohit Sharma should have opened in tests from few years ago after his initial success opening in white ball cricket. With 35 year old, he has missed good 4-5 years of test cricket. He will always be a batsman who could have been in test cricket. Maybe India missed an ATG test opener. :srt

Good batting wicket. Hopefully Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin hits useful half centuries here.

What an effort from Pope! Would have been a great catch!

Now Pope drops a straightforward catch off Jimmy, Kohli the beneficiary.

Anderson got Virat Kohli last time was in 2014, here Pope drops Kohli with Anderson bowling. Face of the Anderson tells the whole story.

I think Root is annoyed that the 3rd umpire is very hasty to make a decision instead of cycling through a closer angle.

I cannot say it was a wrong decision, but boy that 3rd umpire is sure trigger-happy!

Third Umpire in that stumping appeal should've seen the video from another angle. Don't know what's up with the third umpire in this series.

"It's the worst footmarks that I've ever seen" - I think I heard Leach saying that (benefit of stump mic).

They can only complain to the On-field umpire even if they want longer reviews so they do.
I certainly think that third umpires are not upto the standard.
They should take all their time for review which starts with checking for overstepping each review.
They do that in background but they should show it on screen. They don't show overstepping for a single appeal.
Giving decision in 5-10 seconds is unnecessary when you can take 30 seconds to check properly.
Fully agree with English demads for longer replay checks.

It was a dodgy decision at best. I'm not sure his foot was grounded. They strangely haven't shown a single replay of that appeal after the referral.

The only thing I can possibly think of in mitigation is that these home umpires haven't had much DRS training, obviously since it's not used in domestic cricket.

But yeah, the rigour of the decision making process is as important as the decision itself to avoid these controversies.

Leach, what a bowler. Kohli plays a false shot.

Huge huge breakthrough for England. England definitely are still in. India in need of a 50 run partnership at the very least.

Indian umpires are a source of embarrassment to our country...

When we can produce world class cricketers, not sure why we can't produce half decent umpires.

A pitch where Leech looks like Murali on day 1. Reminds me of Pandya taking a 5-wicket haul in England last time around. Teams shouldn’t go out of their way to exploit home advantage.

India’s day by a mile.

A&B were picked to get wickets with the pink ball, and they haven’t.

England misread the pitch and conditions. In India you always select at least two quality spinners to have a chance. England will be dearly missing the service of Moeen Ali.

Eng should have picked another spin option. India is actually poor against spin. Eng has spinners with less experience and gives some free runs, otherwise, India also can't really play spin that well.

That Kohli wicket just keeps England interested. Big big moment that....

England are still very much in this if they pick a couple of early wickets tomorrow. But India are batting all the way upto no.9 so I think we'll get atleast a 100 run lead if not more.

India should look to bat two sessions. They have batting in Axar till 9.

I just saw few overs at the end and your assumption is completely false. Leach is bowling tight line and odd bowl is spinning. Kohli played for spin which wasn’t there and cost him dearly. This pitch has everything for everyone. Better than last pitch I must say.

Why not? I dont see people complaining when sub-continental teams have to face imperious swing or bounce in the SENA countries. This is WTC - you should be able to compete in all bowling conditions,

Understand Root wanting more replays for this one to be sure, but what exactly can Nitin Menon do as an onfield umpire in a stumping referral

3rd umpiring is poor this series while on-fiield umpiring is very good.. he's too quick to give that not out (i too believe that is not out tbh)..

As long as Rohit is out there, India will look forward to scoring 300-320 which will give them around 200 runs lead. England will be under immense pressure to score big in 3rd innings, which will be a challenge with long tail and a bunny.

Bcs there's a 4th umpire for checking front foot no ball on time..

I’m angry. That was one of England’s poorest days of Test cricket in a while.

The botched team selection, the strange tactics, the general lack of effort, the childish attitudes, the innocuous and trundling bowling, the lazy fielding, the terrible catching, and particularly the cowardly and disastrous batting were all really, really disappointing.

Only Leach and Crawley amongst England’s players have emerged with any degree of credit from the day.

Stokes, Bairstow, Broad and Root (essentially the most senior of the England players) seemed to be on particularly dreadful form throughout the day — both personally and professionally. They had faces like thunder and were arguing with the match officials over the smallest things. I am not sure if they’re tired of touring, struggling in the bubble, or otherwise feeling sore about something, but they have genuinely embarrassed themselves out there today.

As an aside, the TV Umpire is making a few overly hasty decisions on potentially incomplete evidence. He requires some prompt verbal feedback from the Match Referee and needs to get his act together quickly.

Today, in the end, belonged to Team India. Credit to them. Axar, Rohit (again) and Ashwin (yet again) performed brilliantly.

India is one more dominant session away from making the game (and also the series) virtually unassailable. India can truly go on and humiliate England if they play their cards right tomorrow.

Massive session in the morning. Huge.

England's rotation policy is gonna cost them this series. By the way I tagged you in this thread.

The rotation policy has been absolutely bizarre. It’s like they had written off this series before they’d even started. Consequently, they were probably as surprised with their win in the first Test as everyone else was.

Once again, coming Test series at home — and, ultimately, the Ashes — are being prioritised and lauded by England over potential success in the Subcontinent, apparently to keep the media and the fans happy (we’re not!). No wonder we have won plenty of the former, and not too many of the latter.

Thanks for the tag in the other thread. I have replied.

I know it makes great optics, but I genuinely haven’t enjoyed any pink ball test so far. There is hardly any contest - its too much loaded in favor of the home team, plus it has more complications in the sub-continent with the dew factor etc. Not a big fan.

Agree with this. I'm a traditionalist and enjoy day tests only. These DN tests are for those who aren't test connoisseurs anyway, so nothing to be gained by trying to sell test cricket to these guys!
