India tour of Australia (2020/21)

KL Rahul need to open for India. Its criminal to keep a batsman of his calibre in bench. He is your 50+ avg test opener and is bound to have a great test career. So as soon as we realize that and keep him in the park, it will benefit team India.

Like I was proven right with Pandya in LOI series, mark my words - (if given a chance) KL Rahul's ressurection in test cricket starts from Australia tour. So all these debate about Gill or Shaw...park them aside and let Rahul open.

KL Rahul is my first pick as opener as well. But unfortunately, he hasn't been tried even one practice game. Hence, it's a risky prospect to go with KLR as opener now.

I agree about KL Rahul not being on the bench but I disagree about Pandya. He didn’t show much in this LOI series that we didn’t know before. That he’s a good power hitter with immense natural ability and finisher and can also consolidate if need be, especially when on flat tracks and consistently given balls pitched in his zone that can be hit towards the cow corner.

Hell no. He is tested as opener and he was a failure.

He needs to play only in middle order.

KL Rahul has tigher technique than both Mayank and Shaw combined. Mayank has recently grown up a similar weakness that Kohli had in 2014 and he will be tested in England and South Africa next year.

Mark my words, Shaw will anyways fail in next England tour if in case he plays and will end with about 124 runs in 10 innings if given a chance. Haha, 228 runs in 15 games in IPL, ROFL, hell no, poor fitness guy, can't catch, can't field.

KL had a dip in past and he has matured a lot from that. The only problem is lack of red ball cricket going against him but this is his peak period and we must play him as he can post 500 runs over one complete series.

KL and Gill are two best Under-30 batsmen India are having in modern era with Mayank third best. Shaw and Iyer should wait and carry water bottles for these guys :inti

I agree with Gill. But you are really underestimating Shaw here. He will be a force in the future.

Tyron is never wrong.

Iyer should just continue eating his dosai, idli and pongal and maybe start a restaurant.

Rahul is trash as opener.

Mark my words, if Rahul opens he will get out cheaply in every innings for under 15 ish runs.

Mayank and Gill or Shaw should open

Rahul is tailor made for middle order bashing and so is Rohit in tests.

In tests**. Rahul is a poor opener in odi too. He is better off in the middle order.

Once Shaw fixes his technique, I will rate him higher.

Iyer is a Mumbaikar. He can start Vada Pav restaurant. Shaw is also a Mumbaikar and based on his current form and technique, he too can accompany Iyer in starting a restaurant just like how he accompanied him in "What the Duck" Show.

He can also take some fielding classes from Manish Pandey :inti

Interesting that India has named their squad in advance (which they seldom do abroad) and Australia prefer to keep theirs close to the chest (which they seldom do at home or abroad!)

What is happening?!

AFAIK, we have never declared our test XI in advance. But knowing how Kohli functions as a captain, shouldn't surprise anyone.

Losing SA and Eng test series was majorly due to Kohli's selections.

So Gill can't even get into the side despite scoring in the practice game and looking in great touch and Shaw gets in despite not scoring and being totally miserable during entire game.

That is correct...I don't think we declare our test XI anywhere. What is he trying to do? Mind games?

I had an inkling that India would be reluctant to throw Gill in as opener for this test given:

a. they want Sharma to slot in the top order when he is fit; and
b. there is a vacancy in the middle order once Kohli departs.

He just has to be patient.

Shaw will need a decent score to retain his spot at the MCG.

Pretty sure that Gill will play the second test once Kohli leaves.

So this is how it looks like
1) Shaw to play in Rohit's place
2) Gill to take Kohli's spot once he leaves
3) Rohit to play as an opener once he is available

Shaw has a golden opportunity which he should consider as God sent and make use of it. It looks unlikely at the moment, but we have seen a pathetically out of form Viru turn the tables around in 2007/2008. Can Shaw do a Viru? Even a few fifties would be very welcome. Let us wait and see.

Kohli isn’t departing any time soon though? Edit: in general that is. Gill will play these tests then will have to wait for a few years no?

Not happy with Shaw selection over Gill.
Hope he will prove me wrong.

He is only playing the first test. The administrators are praying they will get some concessions from the government to allow him back in time for the fourth test without a hard quarantine requirement. If not, he is out of the series.

It means KL will have to wait longer for a test comeback. Shaw will get two games as opener and after he fails in 4 innings, Rohit will come in place of him.

Gill will bat at 4 after Kohli goes. I guess if India bats first, then by the time I woke up, Shaw would have already gone for 0(1). :inti

Reckon Shaw can score a quick 30 or 40. If the Australians bowl poorly, he might even get a big score. However, he is nowhere near good enough to be playing test cricket at the moment.

I have also heard that there is a lot of grass covering on the Adelaide pitch so that's a bad sign for India because in that case, they could have gone with four pacers and that includes Siraj as he is a brilliant new bowl bowler.

lol mind games! You need to have grey matter to play mind games which Kohli doesn't have.

They probably want Gill to compete with Rahane and Vihari for a spot in the long-run.
Which is as idiotic as it gets. Gill has played and succeeded as an opener, why change that for accommodating a tried and tested overseas tests failure like Rohit who can't even sort out his weight issues?

This. Shaw is talented, no question about that. But he has a lot of issues to sort before even thinking of representing us at international level.

Saha over Pant is an interesting one, given Saha's persistent fitness concerns. Seems a tad risky as Pant is a serviceable keeper under these conditions given that the ball will not swing or spin.

Saha is another poor selection especially after what Pant did in the practice game. If performance in practice games doesn't matter at all, why even play them?

Oh, I forgot how Kohli treats practice games! What did he say before the start of last DN practice game against Australia A? That he'll see how he feels after he wakes up and then decide whether he'll play that game or not.

Shameful! Sooner this guy is removed as our captain better it is.

In any case I don't see a reason why our XI had to be declared in advance especially since the hosts who usually have that habit have wisely chosen not to do it this time.

So it is really strange that this has happened. Frankly I don't think there is any advantage revealing your cards in advance. But tactically the opposition would now know who they are going to face and plan better.

To me it looks like a lose lose face palmish move.

Pitch for the Pink Ball Test

Reports in the Australian media state that Cameron Green will debut tomorrow, implying that Wade will open with Burns.

Hope he doesn't. Things will go worse in England next year if he proves you wrong :inti

That's not the right way to look at things IMO. Yes he has a dodgy technique but we can't say for sure that he's gonna fail in England. Who knows he may even come good with his positive approach.

Rahul has an air tight technique (atleast as far as I'm concerned) but failed badly in England and SA. We never know.

While there are several disadvantages, are there any advantages that you get from revealing your team in advance?

Greg Chappell was right. Kohli is most Australian non Australian.

I'm getting really bad vibes of us being 0-1 down after this test ends.

Adelaide is normally a flat phatta pitch, so good chance for India to get some runs on the board.

Overall i havent really seen the two openers much so will check them out in this series. Middle order looks pretty solid and if pujara gets runs India will get runs. Will you be able to get twenty wickets though. Thats the question.

Looking at the pitch - it looks a batting pitch to me (don't be carried over by the grass - Australian pitches do have grass - even the first ODI pitch looked similar).

So any likely help from the pitch is going to be there only if we bowl first....would it be a good toss to lose? I am not sure.

It is going to be an interesting three days atleast to start with when we will know where the match is heading (if not the result if Adelaide's D/N test form holds true)

Another very important factor to consider is the TV broadcaster who is at loggerheads with ACB for (what in their opinion was) a raw deal to them considering Kohli is leaving early.

So to pacify them, would ACB roll out batting wickets so that the games last 5 days? I would think so. Advantage Australia with their tall, hit the deck pacers.

Looks a bit dry. The sometimes give it a final mow the day of the match to shave some grass off. Wouldn't be surprised if it's dry/rough enough for some reverse swing, certainly from day 3 on.

It seems averaging 50+ in test cricket is a joke for you. First it was Pandya and now KL Rahul lol. You were wrong about Pandya because Kohli didn't think of Pandya as a specialist batsman in tests and asked him to go back home.

Rahul will average between 38-42 bracket even if he ressurects his career in this Aussie tour because as soon as England tour starts his average will come down again. Why am I saying so? Because he currently average 35 after 36 tests. Now compare him with Dhawan whose average is 40 after 34 tests and Rohit whose average is 47 after 32 tests. Now I will let you figure out whether KL Rahul is better than Dhawan/Rohit.

Don't get me wrong KL Rahul is needed in test team because of lack of options. And even if he average around 40 that will be good enough for our team. :inti

He failed badly because the issue was his mindset and head at that time. As you only said, he has a much tighter technique and it is much better than Shaw for an opener.

This is the right time to back KL because he is in a better frame of mind and running in with a lot of confidence. However, due to stiff competition, guys like Gill and Shaw are ahead in reckoning which is also fair because KL lost his place and Shaw hasn't failed enough.

But Shaw's problem starts with his technical flaws, he will struggle against incoming deliveries, was worked out quite easily in IPL where not every team has quality pacers to start with.

Ofcourse, if Shaw performs consistently he should be backed but my only worry is he may just score enough to deserve another run like he got that one fifty in NZ and those runs will not help us win the game here as well. Anyways, Rohit will come back in 3rd test, so KL will have to wait longer for a place in test XI.

I fully expect Kohli to change the lineup for the actual game, he’s playing mind games right now so the Aussies are confused :kohli

I think the management sees Gill as a middle order bat rather than an opener. So playing him in Adelaide would complicate things even more and shaw has been given one last chance before Rohit returns .

Saha has been preferred over pant as he's the best wicket keeper and a must for the pink ball test under lights.

My xi for the second test :

Mayank
Rohit / shaw ---> if he scores 70+ in Adelaide
Pujara
Gill
Rahane C
Vihari

Shaw scored a crisp 50 in 2018 last time in a tour match and then twisted his ankle and then lost his place
So i think he deserves an oppurtunity.

I really rated Shaw a few years ago. But the way his technique has been exposed in recent times, he doesn't deserve to play Tests ahead of Shubhman Gill.

Ankle injury is extremely serious. If you don't heal it properly, it can take years to get it back to its original strength. Ligament tear can be dangerous.

I think Shaw's Backfoot game has been affected by his rigid ankle movement. He needs to do more strength and conditioning.

This social bullying of Shaw is toxic.
He has the ability, want him to thump these trolls so badly.

Not a single left handed batsman in the Indian X1 for the first test.

He is surely over-rated a lot by some people here, at least for the moment, but now some posters have decided to underrate him as he is a club level cricketer.

He is young, he has potential, he has showed it U19, first class and even tests at home. Let's see where he goes from now. No need to over-rate him or underrate him.

You can keep your opinion and let me keep mine bruv. Remember your last prediction 'Pandya only performs once in 3 years' back fired so spectacularly...so lets see who is proven right this time again. Anyone who thinks Rahul is a 38 - 42 bracket test batsman have serious lack of game knowledge. But hey, lets discuss this when Rahul is given a consistent chance in test cricket first.

As far as Pandya is concerned, he was asked to stay back for test matches but he decided to go home as he hasnt seen his son for 4 months. Not that I like that behaviour of his but he is very much capable of playing as a batsman alone in test cricket.

Ridiculous selections. Shaw over Gill is still okay but why Saha?

It seems his scores against Tye, Sams, Swepson got to your head. Even Jadeja batted superbly against Australia this time. Pandya Ji is not consistent. His consistency will be tested from now onwards.

Bhaijaan, Pandya ji was asked to go back home because Kohli didn't want to play him as a specialist batsman in the team. There is a big risk playing him(hit and miss player) as a batsman alone in tests. For more info you can read Kohli's interview that came couple of days ago.:inti

Do you really think he or any international player cares about what some keyboard warriors says on an internet forum? I have seen worse comments about him on social media. He himself might have heard way worse sledges while facing bouncers. They know how to ignore it and move on.

A blistering 75 from Shaw in the morning set the stage on fire as India posted 188/3 before Rahane ran his captain out and then got out ending up the day's total at 233/6.

A proper thumping given by Shaw to his haters but the job is not over as you can expect him to come up with two fantastic catches tomorrow of Smith and Labuschagne and get them out cheaply.

Truly a future Tendulkar/Lara in making.

A fresh Covid-19 outbreak in Sydney sent Cricket Australia on high alert. The Sydney outbreak - the number of cases in the northern beaches outbreak in Sydney reached 28 on Friday - had an impact on the broadcasters with former Australian pacer and Fox Cricket commentator Brett Lee deciding to return home in northern Sydney.

Lee has not developed any symptoms yet and has flown back as a precautionary measure.

Two Sydney-based members of the broadcaster also returned home, while two more decided to work from hotel.

Three members of the SEN commentary team, which is covering the first Test, have left Adelaide.

Cricket Australia, however, asserted that the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, which is slated to take place in Sydney is not threatened even though the situation is being closely monitored.

“There’s been lots of discussion and meetings of our medical experts, but this is the reason why throughout the summer we’ve had our players in bubbles in the hub,” CA’s interim chief executive Nick Hockley told SEN Radio.

“We’re monitoring the situation; we’re not panicking at all, staying calm... ... it’s really watch, wait and see and I think the governments around the country have handled the pandemic so well, so we’ll watch, learn and stay in touch.”On whether the SCG Test was in doubt, Hockley said: “I don’t think so - this is the very reason why we have the hubs in place...

“... whether it’s the WBBL players, the BBL players, the BCCI, our own Australia squads, they have been absolutely fantastic in dealing with all the protocols.

“Our medical experts have been working around the clock, we’re in very good communication with health authorities around the country. It’s one of the things we’ve had to navigate with getting cricket up safely.”

Hockley said the governing body has contingency plans in place and stressed that the next three days will be crucial.

“If the game can be played safely (in Sydney) then we’ll play it there. That’s our starting point, so it’s working with the health authorities to ascertain that,” he said.

“We started out thinking how to play the full series as safely as possible, and we’ll take the same approach over the coming days and weeks.”We’ve got contingency plans around a whole range of different options, and we’ve had to be agile all the way through. We were encouraged that it was 17 cases yesterday and ten today, and we’ll see how that plays out over the next 72 hours.”The second Test is scheduled to start at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on December 26 its chief Stuart Fox said they are ready to support CA if need be.

“We hope that doesn’t happen to Sydney. We know what it’s like to lose a major event. For us, all focus is on the Boxing Day Test,” he was quoted as saying by ‘Sydney Morning Herald’.

“We’re here to support Cricket Australia if need be.”

Last time Australia got bowled out for less than 200 in their first innings of a Test series was during the 2005 Ashes (190/10 at Lord's).

Their last instance at home was way back during 1990-91 Ashes. (152/10 at Gabba)

Most Test Wickets vs AUS by Indian

Anil Kumble - 111
Harbhajan - 95
Ravi Ashwin - 79*
Kapil Dev - 79
Zaheer - 61

You will win this Test match. 230-250 lead is going to be a mission but it will secure victory

We need 200 runs more. 262 lead will be safe. Remember, they are playing at their home so it helps.

You are underestimating Smith.

you are underestimating how difficult it is to chase in Australia, which is why toss is so crucial. Smith averages 30 in 4th innings with 29 in Australia. In 23 matches in australia , his highest score in 4th innings is 40
