India v England | 1st Test | Rajkot | Nov 9-13, 2016 | Day 3

India 95/1 (30.0 ov)
India trail by 442 runs with 9 wickets remaining in the 1st innings

M Vijay not out 28
G Gambhir lbw b Broad 29
CA Pujara not out 24

India need partnerships and big ones.

Getting a start won't work.Gambhir disappointed with his batting.

Che and Vijay has to make it count and then Kohli and Rahane too.

Not that I am a big fan of the square turners India dish out but surely you want a bit more sporty pitch.

I abhor the concept of a match ending in a dull draw.

Don't think we will have a result this match. Still 29 more wickets to go

England have dried up the runs, last 5 overs, 3 runs. Vijay-Pujara unnecessarily building up pressure

Nothing wrong with the pitch, there is turn and good bounce for pacers, some reverse swing as well. Batsmen in their 20s and 30s are not looking settled at all.

We dropped 6-7 catches, can't blame the pitch for poor fielding.

Crucial period of play. Suddenly batting looking very difficult- uneven bounce, hitting helmets, some sharp turn as well

Ansari looks a good bowler. Action needs work but good seam presentation, flight and control over length.

You aren't a fan of square turners?:srini

Might want to reconsider that after your last series.:shakib

When is Rahul returning?

We desperately need him soon. This guy Gambhir will be picked off by any semi decent fast bowler.
Even Mukhund will do a better job, has been in fine form this Ranji season.

I don't want both Dhawan and Gambhir in the team..

Pujara is struggling with the short ball here.

Need to keep his eyes on the ball while swaying away.

Picking Gambhir was always a poor decision and a step backwards. Should have picked Mukund or Akhil Herwadkar.

As usual, Pujara after entering batting so well early in the innings, has gone into a shell and is looking so ucomfortable. Hope he can survive this phase

India 122-1 (42.2)
Murali Vijay not out 44 (119)
Cheteshwar Pujara not out 35 (63)

The first match was on a square turner. The second match we won was a more sporty wicket with even bounce and no vicious turn.

I didn't like the wicket of the first match tbh. You can bowl poorly like Rashid did and still get a bundle of wickets.

Its a long time since we have seen such a flat wicket. Most of our test matches end in result except when affected by rain

It was still a turner, only of a lower grade.:shakib

Yes and was bearable.

Although England batsman made it look it look like a square turner. Now that's a different thing. Our batsmen on the other hand collapsed against pace of woakes and stokes :shakib

Yes which surprised me. I think a sporty wicket woild be better

Great session so far

GG career should be over unless he scores big in 2nd dig

Pitch is starting to grip.

Don't see much turn. Maybe the odd one will do.

Have to bat carefully. Grip will swallow careless batsmen.

India 158-1 (48.5)
Murali Vijay not out 57 (135)
Cheteshwar Pujara not out 59 (86)

sensible-indian-fan Buffet Yes, I know that India are still long way to go but still I think India will get close to 500 mark and then it will be a draw unless some suicidal sort of things happen.

compared to our leggie

I know it is a flat wicket, more so in the first 2 days. But the way Amit Mishra bowled with hardly any energy was annoying. You know something is wrong when you're getting outbowled by the Ranji spinners.

Need to pick Kuldeep atleast once during the series.

India 174-1 (55)
Murali Vijay not out 62 (162)
Cheteshwar Pujara not out 69 (96)

Shastri explaining about what made Bishen the bowler he was.

It's the pivot which creates the energy in the crease.

Bedi used to explain how he does it but Shastri couldn't do it so he took whatever he could and made it his own.

Damn...would have been fun to see Bedi and Prasanna live.

Playing out this Rashid spell is crucial.

If you win moments like these, the bowlers will lose heart and spray around.

Score 550 here , get england out for 150. Can't see them scoring anymore than 150 in the next innings

This is the issue I have with Vijay.

Is solid as a rock for India at the top, but sometimes plays too slow and gets out in the 60s and 70s too often without kicking on to make a big score. Been ages since he scored his last century.

Not watching, is the wicket starting to break up?

Reading vicious bounce and turn from Rashid in cricbuzz..

Rashid is not bowling any hit-me balls. He has surprised with his consistency

He is in the middle of a good spell.

Have to play out this spell and then he will be very easy to play.

NZ spinners were very good too but when you play out the tough periods when they are in flow, they can be carted around.

Pretty much standard operating procedure when playing spin or even pace.

Haha...classic PP.

You do well...you are the best.

You don't....you got exposed.

No. Find one post where I've criticized your batting lineup in Tests. I don't rate them much in ODIs because when the openers are not in form it's a one man show. Pakistan also has a formidable top 5

They are bowling outside off and we are leaving deliveries. Need to get a move on.

No.

We are doing fine.

Not too slow and not too reckless.

There will be periods of up and down. Weather the storm (in this case mild storm of tight bowling) and you can pile on the runs.

Top 7 I should say

Was a general statement. :D

Potentially, our top 5 is very very good (once Rahul comes in) but need more application so that we don't throw away wickets.

It's somewhat true though. It's between Pakistan and India at the moment. Pakistan have a very solid top 5 in Sami, Azhar, Asad, YK and Misbah. India have a technically strong top 5 in Vijay, Rahul, Pujara, Kohli and Rahane. But they don't play enough "boring cricket" like Pakistan do apart from the two men at the crease now. That is a very crucial aspect in Test cricket which is probably more important than flamboyance. That's a reason why Indian batsmen haven't made much big scores lately like the others.

May be I'm biased because I watch a lot of Indian matches, but I feel the Indian top 5 is the most aesthetically pleasing to watch though.

Our top 7 is better though mainly because Ashwin plays at 6 for India while Babar will probably bat at 6 for Pakistan in the upcoming tours. Ashwin and Saha arent nearly as good as Babar and Sarfraz. This is a double edged sword however because india get to play an extra bowler

Last 40 balls have yielded 4 runs, bowlers are gaining confidence and hitting their preferred lengths. Basically there is no intent now.

We are slowly realizing that the 5th bowler needs to be a batsman who can bowl and not bowler who can bat.

Ashwin at 6 and Saha at 7 is untenable for the long run.

Rahul is as good as the 2 combined however is his keeping good enough. I think he is a decent keeper. If he can bat at 6 for India then Ashwin at 7 is fine in the long run

The scorecard doesn't reveal the true pressure India is in.

These 2 needs to be careful.

Ride out the storm and we will make hay.

Agreed. Sarfaraz is a very good test bat while Babar is new but he should be fine too. It's a price we have to pay because we just can't play with just 4 bowlers as they don't often pick 20 wickets overseas. We desperately need that 5th bowler and we have to sacrifice that 6th batsman for that sake. Bhuvi is a decent bat however and he will compensate for that somewhat along with Ash and Saha.

Rahul as keeper would kill his batting or his limited keeping or both.

Make shift keepers cost more in tests.

We have only that option, unless you want guys like Pandya

Ashwin is pretty dependable too
