What's new

India v England | 3rd Test | Mohali | Nov 26-30, 2016 | Day 2

england need to rip the game open here n reduce india to 40-3.
new cherry will nibble around for 40 minutes

Makeshift opener here so Eng can make inroads and have a good game.

Will Stokes be banned from playing the Fourth Test, he already abused a lot of players around the globe :akhtar

Sunny Gavaskar telling an interesting story of Krish, reminds of me of a time on "The Hindu" newspaper growing up reading his articles.

There was no obstruction at all so not sure what they were appealing here.

Dharmasena ROFL :D :D Stay with original decision for a review when it should be reversed

5.3
Woakes to Patel, no run, Into the hip, and he has been given out caught down the leg side. Patel reviews it immediately. And Patel has reviewed correctly. The ball has missed the bat as he looks to flick, and it has gone off the shirt.

What comedy from Dharmasena as the TV umpire. He says, "No edge Marais, you can stay with your on-field decision."

Marais Erasmus, thankfully, doesn't listen to him and does the right thing by changing his original decision of out

:)))

Mohali is literally the worst venue for test cricket in India as far as crowd attendance is concerned.

England 283
India 28/0 (9.4 ov)
India trail by 255 runs with 10 wickets remaining in the 1st innings
Murali Vijay (rhb) 7 (23)
Parthiv Patel (lhb) 20 (36)

Shame. Mohali is having clear sunny weather, pleasant 22c, 45% humidity, gentle breeze. Its also a pollution free city. These are best cricket playing conditions in India.

True but love the outfield.

The stadium is top notch, the outfield is pristine, the wickets are fantastic, even the floodlights and the long room are iconic.

But I've never seen a good crowd for test cricket at Mohali ever. Maybe they like the shorter formats more. In all fairness though, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai are probably the only venues which regularly get good crowd for test cricket. Even Kolkata's turnout was disappointing in the last series against NZ.

India have released injured Hardik Pandya from the squad. Also, KL Rahul is expected to be fit for the Mumbai Test

England 283
India 39/1 (14.4 ov)
Parthiv Patel (lhb) 26*

Mate i think they already have too many on the board. Remember we are batting last here. Our dropped catches are going to haunt us big time.

Bairstow's catch might prove costly but I'm still hoping our batsmen apply themselves.

Vijay may have escaped it if he had not walked. Eng had lost one review and 80 overs was far away.

Can't judge kolkata based on a match against Enzed. They'd probably have the best turnout amongst all cities if the opposition were england/OZ/Pakistan.

Why is Parthia Patel opening

Not a fan of keepers opening in tests

Parthiv doing a pretty neat job out there. Good to see that.

Why the dislike?

Wicket keeping is a very difficult job. You have to keep for an entire innings and then you're out to open the innings which is very strenuous.

Pretty decent session for India. Hoping for long batting sessions till next day at the least, & then press for a win.

It is upto the person's stamina and drive to do the job. If he is comfortable, trained and accustomed to it, hardly any issue.

India 60/1 (22.0 ov)
India trail by 223 runs with 9 wickets remaining in the 1st innings
Parthiv Patel (lhb) 37 (73)
Cheteshwar Pujara (rhb) 8 (22)

Umpire reviews remaining India 2 (1 successful, 0 unsuccessful); England 2 (0 successful, 0 unsuccessful)

India on top here, India will probably score 500+ on this pitch

Now days, India hardly scores 500+. Most Indian batsmen don't make those daddy hundreds even at home which was common in previous generation. Eng just doesn't have the good spin unit to put pressure otherwise Indian batting is not that great.

That is the only way to extract good stuff out of Parthiv Patel! Already our openers are unsettled (both Vijay the seasoned guy and Rahul the emerging guy are finding it difficult to show the authority), so India and Parthiv both are not going to lose anything with this. Parthiv is anyhow not our long term option. It doesn't mind there is wear and tear in using him (and it is not so that if he does both opening & keeping its going to tire him! Probably it may only extract better out of him!) as long as it serves India's purpose of strengthening their batting lineup/middle order and the balance of playing extra bowler.

But I know this will not work overseas (And that will be a problem until India finds proper settled openers)

Yes, brother Buffet you are right :kallis :amla

Pujara is on a streak, 1st Test, 1st Innings 124, 2nd Test, 1st Innings 119, 3rd Test 1st Innings 8* (Another century coming up folks :sachin )

Thankfully the spinners (pitches?) have improved from the previous generation and also the seamers are doing their job (and captaincy which is another crucial part) Hence big scores from batsmen are not needed. (But at some point of time we know this will affect us! Let's hope by then our batsmen will get to their terms!)

He has been hitting tons, but even he is not making it a big one after getting a ton. I always thought that he likes to make it big one.

Patel looks a quality batsman. But would you sacrifice Saha's keeping to strengthen the lower order? Tough call.
