What's new

India vs England | 1st Test | Ahmedabad | 18/11/12 | Day 5

I was hoping for 150 odd runs specially when Gambhir is not going to bat. Ball has started keeping low. That would have been interesting to watch. 75 runs is too low even if India loses couple of early wickets.

Major problem for England in this test was that whole team got only two partnerships by top order. One partnership was epic otherwise very poor effort.

He's also picked up two wickets that were surely not wickets (both Fatel's).

Can't really think of him as good. Bell's wicket and Broad's doesn't impress me.

Well he should have got three wickets which were not given. So that evens out.

We can have both, Bell is going home and Fatel is dubious.

Then why not have Monty(on for broad), pitch is going to be definitely better than the one here in Ahmedabad. With this combo you will have two slow left armers with an offie on a potentially spinner-friendly pitch.

Dross attempts to play spin, rubbish seam bowlers and flawed team selection have caused a heavy loss.

Apart from yesterday at points, India have been stellar all game and deserve to win. A real team effort and well done to them.

There are definitely some positives for England but this was not the way to start.

So disappointing from England
I should stop following them. The only day I didnt they did well lol

I think 150 would have been enough if the ygot Sehwag early
This is too low. Even Pakistan wouldnt have messed this up

Ojha is the MOTM for me. I know Pujara and Cook played well, but Ojha was the match changer.

Luck finally ran out for us. Except Cook's dismissal every other batsmen threw their wickets away.

England medium pacers were terrible. I'm advocating dropping Broad and Bresnan.

Ojha was the real hero. He did all the work this game.

Not really the wickets but way he bowled on this pitch even on 5th day was nice to see. He was bowing fast, full and getting ball to reverse. We don't see too many bowlers reverse swinging at fast pace. English seamers were below par so I am not even comparing here simply taking Yadav's bowling as stand alone. In fact, he was turned down few dead plumb which were fantastic Yorkers. There was nothing for fast bowlers here so I think it was very good bowling from Yadav.

As I predicted, Ahd was the only pitch that would be the flattest among the rest of the pitches!

England missed the chance, it's very steep climb from here.

Lots of strong performances in this game: Ojha, Cook, Pujara, Sehwag, Yadav, Yuvraj, Prior, Swann.

I'd give Man of the Match to Ojha. Brilliant display.

the worst thing from Englands perspective is that this is not really a spinning wicket :))

I guess the worry for england is that it was cook who gave them the chance to save the match, he's the one pre tour that most felt had the game and the attitude to bat 3-5 sessions in these conditions.

England badly need kp trott and bell to back up cook if they are to have any chance of competing in the series, the huge questions over englands middle order in asia really haven't been answered by this fightback.

Mumbai's pitch will seam and spin! It will be much harder to bat on day 4 and 5 there.

Pacers and Spinners both will enjoy bowling there. Reddish pitch.

its a genuinely turning track only the 1st test match pitch is SL was more turning then this track during England's Asia triple header.

England or should I say just Cook and Prior fought hard to get back in the game but rest of them yet again gave it all away just like that. India should get these runs within 15 or so overs with Sehwag blasting away. I was hoping for at least around a 200 chase. What a shame.

I think best performance was Cook's batting( given the situation and pitch). He will take lot of confidence from this knock. Prior also played very well to stick it out there but Cook was playing chance less inning and judging the length very well. Given that Cook has not learned his cricket on turning tracks it was great to watch him bat so well.

Pujara and Ojha from Indian side were stand out.

Was a heck of a knock from cook, his double at the gabba turned the ashes around but that was on a dead track in conditions you would expect him to prosper in.

This was a superior knock even though it didn't save the game.

this is really slow turning track where batsmen had more time to adjust to the spin. Kolkata will have much sharper turn with decent bounce - now that will be a real minefield

I still think Cook needs some improvement against moving ball. Still LBW candidate as his foot still doesn't line up to his shot selection sometimes.

I actually think England struggle more on the pitches with slow turn and less bounce, they have played 6 tests recently in asia and suffered an amazing 55 lbw/bowled.

Fantastic knock by Cook. Great temperament shown and applied himself beautifully. One of the best knocks that I have seen.

Like the looks of Compton, let us see where his career takes him.

Prior, top notch stuff.

Swann, good.

The rest, pretty poor and way below average.

Both Pujara and Sehwag blasting away. Another 5 overs should do it.

There's the wicket. Glad to see Sehwag out, and to Swanny who deserved it.

I must admit now that you were bang on target on when you said Ojha will be the key.

even i underestimated Ojha.

You were also off-target when you said Swann would be devoured. :)

Make no mistake, we have been hammered here. India deserve credit.

I fail to see how anyone could. Ojha is clearly the best bowler in the side. If you dredge up old match reports, I've been banging on about how he is their best and how Ashwin is all just dazzle carrom young spinner when the obvious performer is overlooked.

Great knock by Cook regardless of what his team did around him.

A real trooper.

Is he a special batsman or what?

ambi says
'Looking at this innings, Pujara is proving that he can open the innings and is ready for the ODI's too.I have a feeling that Gautam's position is in danger.'
So people already want Pujara to don many roles. He is the next Dravid, at least in this sense.

ambi :13:

With that India takes a 1-0 lead. TBH don't have much hope for Eng turning it around. Performed even worse than I thought they would before the start of the series. Cook, Prior and Swann can't be asked to do every thing.

Easy win in the end. But credit should go to Cook and Prior for taking score past 400.

Good win by the Indians. Chased the small target at almost 5 rpo with the loss of a wicket. Easily done.

Hope Wankhede and Eden are a minefield!

Just heard from David Gower in Sky that 2nd test might get moved to Kolkata from Mumbai (due to After-effects of Bal Thakarey demise on the city)

Pujara has shown that he can bat fluently.should replace Rohit in ODIs

Oh No! Ojha misses out the MOTM award.

He deserved more than the batters, for taking those many wickets on this super slow track.

Mumbai and Kol will be more bowler friendly wickets.....but in all this cheer over the victory we mustnt forget that England too have positives....

1. Swann will always be effective
2. Apart from the 1st session on Day 1, Anderson wasnt really innocuous. He wasnt taking wickets, but he was making things difficult for the Indians.
3. Cook and Prior, have been the 2nd and 3rd best batsman in this match. I will keep Sehwag as the 4th because he was batting when the pitch was best and you can never really rely on him. Who does India have? India's batting stops at Yuvraj. 5 bunnies with the bat follow him, except Ashwin who can be relied to serve up around 30 odd runs. Remember India scored @2.5ish after Sehwag.

So, people talking about whitewashes, I hope you eventually turn out to be right, but please do not tempt fate too much. Remember, England scored 406 on a 3rd and 4th day pitch and this was the first test. They will learn from this. This is not like in the UAE where they just about managed 200s.

Any updates on Finn's injury? The lad needs to play for England to compete. He and Panesar should be in for Broad and Bresnan.

I'd also be inclined to drop either KP or Trott apart from Bell to accomodate Morgan and Bairstow. Patel wasn't too bad with the bat at all looking at his dismissals, and his bowling will be useful on turners.

For India, I'd like to see Zaheer rested and Harbhajan coming in. The guy may be crap overall but he can be a match winner in Indian conditions.

Massive respect for Cook. Batted beautifully! The slow turner allowed him to play everything off the pitch on backfoot. I reckon he would be tested when there is quick turn off the track. :)

I think the Indian seamers showed a lot of heart.

I was actually searching for a thread on Cook. This guy has impressed me and won me over with his gritty display of high quality batting. Some cricketers have toured India, done well here and gone on to become greats of the game (Sir Viv) while some others have come here as good or very good players and have gone on to the next level (like Hayden).

Cook came here as a very good batsman and I see him going on to the next level (possibly an ATG) after this tour if he performs at the same level. This lad can bat anywhere in the planet and score runs. Top class batsman. With age on his side, a few of Sachin's records could be under serious threat.

I am not too sure though if England want to burden him with captaincy (not that it has affected him though) now. IMO he should be allowed to bat freely and someone else should be the cappo. This guy could be the next run machine if that happens.

Played India.

Perhaps more than three Englishmen will turn up for the next one!

Get Finn, Monty & Bairstow II please.

Well at least England are doing better than what India did in England, iirc India didn't even get any of the matches into the fifth day

Wrong.
Lords went to the last session of the 5th day.
and so did Oval as leatherface reminded me.
How on earth can you assume that?
It was Australia where Indian batting worsened with a much stronger team.
