India vs England | India win 5th Test against England by an innings and 75 runs in Chennai

India can still push on into the lead and win from here. You need first innings daddy hundreds in India, these pretty English 88s and 110s don't win matches here.

Watch the match(es), statsman. Shah could have had a five-for in this match and he held one end up very well. The Aussie commentators were all over him.

You want him to do what exactly when the Aussies have a 300+ lead?

Was watching the game. Please don't assume.

He bowled poor lines and didn't look like taking any wickets.

Decent day's play today. Caught it live as well at one of the taller stands!

Good to see new boys taking the pressure (and Parthiv). Puraja, Kohli, Vijay made only 50 out of the total runs

Need to bat 68 overs or so and add 250 runs if possible. Only then is there a small chance of a win. But for that we have to bat, bowl and hold on to catches like we haven't throughout this series. :(

I am expecting India to bat around till tea, and declare with a lead of 150+. We would have very much the same situation as the last match.

tbh, if we are still batting, then we shouldn't declare until tea. We should bat for another hour or so after tea and then declare. With a lead of 150, England will feel that once they score 150, they will be able to save the game. If we get the lead to 220+, England will know that they will have to bat out the test and could go in a defensive mode. It'll ensure India doesnt have to bat again.

Shot was on.

Just didn't make sure where the ball pitched.

Dunno if it dipped or he just wasn't careful.

But yeah...such a wide one from leggie could have been left alone.

Especially on 199. Shot would have been on 220, or 180. But with the extra pressure of being on 199, he should have let that go.

Agree that taking wickets is the most important concern away outside the subcontinent/WI.

All I am advocating is if Ashwin continues to struggle take wickets in the absence of spin, I would rather play Jadeja + our 3 pacers with the best strike rates. Jadeja keeps control on one end and the seamers can keep attacking.

If Pandya or someone else can develop into a pace all-rounder, then they would be the 5th bowler.

But isn't that what they did the last time around? In the end, it hardly mattered.

The problem arises when you do not give your lead spinner a consistent run in the team which was the biggest blunder committed by Dhoni. Imagine if Yasir is picked for 1 match, dropped for the next three, picked for next tour and dropped for the next after, it will make life difficult for any spinner. Because it is hard enough bowling on wickets not assisting spin. It requires a superhuman effort for any spinner to deliver on a flat track if he is played suddenly without being given a consistent run. Batsmen don't get dropped the next match they fail on overseas pitches. Kohli was persisted with for an entire tour in England. Pujara went for a long time with low scores, yet was persisted with in overseas matches. You should extend the same support to your lead bowlers as well and not just the lead batsmen.

Ashwin failed at Joburg, and got dropped the next match on a spin friendly pitch at Durban where Jaddu succeeded. Ashwin wasn't picked for the entire NZ tour where Jaddu failed. Even in the England tour, he wasn't picked in the first 3 matches where Jaddu didn't make an impact. So he was played in the last 2 after India started getting destroyed left and right. Got to bowl just 30 overs and ended with better statistics than Jadeja. Again got dropped at Adelaide which was the most spin friendly pitch of the tour. Karn Sharma failed there. In the remaining three matches, he was the highest wicket taker in the series along with Hazelwood and Shami (albeit giving more runs) bowling on very flat unfriendly pitches. West Indies was the only tour where he played the entire series as the lead spinner and got the MOS award (albeit against a weak opposition).

Ashwin wasn't given a consistent chance during the last round of overseas tours. It would be very dumb to repeat it in the next round as well. Ashwin does pick wickets on pitches that don't turn as well too. Vizag didn't assist turn in the first innings as did Mohali and Indore against NZ. He picked wickets in all of those matches. He will be very potent if there is a touch of slowness to the wicket or low bounce or foot marks of bowlers near the off stump. It is on complete roads that he struggles a bit to take wickets regularly although I think he is improving on that aspect. He should be a starter in all the matches overseas in the next round. I'm not saying he will succeed in all the matches immediately, will fail in some matches, but I'm sure he will take 5fers in a few matches along the line.

If that happens, Kohli should invest in another spinner who can be a strike bowler and pick up crucial wickets. Jaddu can play the supporting role which he does very well.

Personally speaking, I highly doubt the situation will come to that. Ash and Jaddu will do a decent supporting job for us overseas. The skillsets they both possess is really really good. They will suck in a few innings but will play a role in others. If Kuldeep clicks, it will be truly an amazing thing.

He has a very high ceiling.

I just wonder, with Kuldeep being a chinaman bowler, but he actually be that useful. Right now, we have a bowler who brings the ball into the batsman and another who takes the ball away.

Kuldeep will bring the ball into the batsmen like Ashwin, but without the same control. Wonder if we would be able to Kuldeep + Ashwin in the same XI

404/4

If we don't get bowled out need to declare with a 120 run lead.

No. Got to bat till we get all out and get the lead to 200 or 250 or 300.

Will give us the best shot at bowling England out on Day 4 or Day 5.

Even then there is no guarantee on this garbage pitch but atleast you could play with some pressure. Make them play 1.5 days and let's see what happens.

My God...today is Day 4. You are right.

Got to insert England in by session 3 today latest. Got to score those lead runs fast.

We need a 200 run lead minimum and even that will give a small chance of a win. Pathetic pitch.

Nasser Hossain has gone on for 25 minutes straight talking up Stokes as if he is some godly cricketer. :stokes

I had a feeling Vijay could get out this soon.

Looked jittery for NO reason.

Again a casual useless dismissal.

Most boring match of the series.

Good for our newbies to pad up some batting averages.

haven't followed the match but seems like bore draw awaits..

Doesn't look comfortable against bounce. Has been extremely lucky today.

Tbh that bouncer would have got out most people, also it is difficult to duck on slower pitch, have seen him handle bounce well.

Need to bat at least a session and a half more. Lead of 150 should be min, but something around 200 would be ideal. 200 would mean that we will not have to bat again.

Nair is putting the English bowlers to the sword. Love the phrase.

In the blink of an eye, the lead is 30. Maybe India will have a double centurion in this Test after all.

Necessary to change gear and score as fast as possible.

Should look for a 200 run lead even and make Eng bat the last hour of the play.

A 100 run lead would make the game safe for us. I think a 150 run lead would be enough to put England under pressure, so that is all we should be aiming for.

No matter what total England puts up, seems to be overtaken by Indians

I would have liked a rank turner to properly embarrass this English team.

Bat another 28 over today and score another 150 to get the lead to 200. Bowl an hour and snare the openers and all to play for tomorrow.

Yes but India should try to pile as much as possible in first inning only. You never know with the fifth day pitch and if England struggle timorrow they might lose it.

why would you go for a draw if you can push it for a win and make it 4-0.

I dont see India losing now. So, they can take their chances, add as much as possible and put a 200 lead and make England bat 10 overs today.

one of the flattest pitch in India :moali

Not that flat! English spinners aren't bowling well enough and to be honest Indian batsmen (though newbies) have batted very well (You saw the senior pros got out cheaply!) How can you call the flattest pitch? I am sure if the toss was reversed we would have sighted the result by now (England into 2nd innings by the end of today!) Just that its getting extended and England have a chance to draw if they bat sensibly next. We will see if the pitch is really flat when England bat tomorrow! (And if you still say England are unlucky to bat on the last day, then I can only laugh at all your logic even after England won the toss!!!)

Nair got all these runs because he is good at playing spin (in contrast to Rahane) though he was lucky at times. But he has to up his game against quicks if he wants to play overseas! But he deserves chances...

Heartening to see Rahul and Nair getting daddy hundreds. The conditions are great for batting but atleast it has been a test of temperament for the young batsmen.

Who would have thought Nair would go all the way in the reckoning of getting 200 after Rahul spilled it yesterday! (I felt Nair would get even more nervous and miss a century!) It would be incredible if Nair goes on to get 200! That should boost his confidence like anything!

The match is dead.......it's like batting practice

If eng bat again then their capatin has very good chance to score a daddy hundred to keep his critics gag

Feel Kohli is getting that. Just 1 failure entire series. Head and shoulders above all.

Ash has to do some serious magic with the ball in the next innings for a good chance.

Ashwin gets the MoS again if he takes a fiver in the second innings and spins India to a win. If not, agree that it will be Kohli.

So many mistakes by England in this test. Dropped catches, illogical DRS reviews, not appealing properly.

I am all for going for a win. A 150 run rather than a 200 run lead will give India more time to get England out. But getting a 200 lead and avoiding batting again also makes sense.

This test is shambolic.

No entertainment value.

Only reason most Indians are watching it cos we want 4-0 at all costs.

How did England get a free review there?

Very bizarre, Kohli should bring this up to the match referee.

What's the best way for a right hander to attack this extremely negative line from England? Stand with an offstump line? Outside of Rahul, no one is really good at reverse sweeping.

I think the umpire was just feeling sorry for the English players. Also the vehemence of the appeal was kind of convincing.

Poor appealing from Bairstow. Needs classes on how to appeal.

Some comical stuff in the commentary box. :))

Appealing, looking tough are all important aspect in cricket.

If Rahane had taken some classes to look tough, his outside Asia average would be more than 48. His timid look made umpires give wrong decision against him with no DRS to correct the errors.

If you are an English supporter, you must be annoyed at Cook at this point. He is not even trying to get wickets here.

Karun Nair 183*

2 folks who are least expected to score this series have come good here :O

40 mins of slogging post tea by Jaddu n co and declare. Lead should be around 160/ 70 by then.

How does Cook and England manage to get away with slow over rates in every match? They are clearly time-wasting now to try and get a draw somehow.
