IPL 2020 postponed for an indefinite period due to Coronavirus Pandemic

Should the IPL be postponed due to Coronavirus outbreak in India?

International events continued in India post terrorist attacks. Ipl, CWG, Hockey WC, Tennis and Badminton tournaments of repute etc etc. So it was not 1 or 2 million dollars but the fact that players felt safe. No player was attacked or injured in a terror attack in India.

Most English players play in the IPL, not only KP.

Terrorist attacks can happen anywhere. Security failing to protect players is a different thing altogether.

As i said, you have a sense of entitlement, that tells you that if players go to India, they must go to Pakistan. Sorry to tell you, but things dont work like that. Situation in both countries are not comparable. Ofcourse you can deny that. But again, that will do nothing to convince anyone.

I would love to have seen if these players would have made themselves available for the IPL and come to India if the pay they were being offered was $50,000-$100,000. Situation in both countries is comparable, India has more seperatist movements inside their country compared to Pakistan.

The security situation in Pakistan is much different compared to 2009

Thats your opinion. The arbitration by three independent judges said something else.

Please give something solid.

Let me remind you again. No one owes pakistan anything.

The judges ruled that the BCCI had a moral responsibility to tour Pakistan and abide by the MOU but ruled that because of the political situation between the two countries nothing could be done.

No one owes pakistan anything. Has england toured pakistan? SA? Nopes.

India doesn't owe anything to Pakistan. Bcci didnt stop anyone. If it did, rest assured it would have been done. Bcci owes nothing to pakistan and isnt obligated to help it. That doesn't mean bcci is stopping anyone. It simply wants nothing to do with pakistan. And thats a very prudent stand.
Some of our fans are just obsessed with BCCi and India which caries no importance. IPl goes on or not I have no concern at all.The most important thing for us is PSL which is almost complete.

Everyone knows the lollypops the BCCI has been giving to the likes of Afghanistan and Bangladesh to avoid touring Pakistan. Lets not forget the threats to the IPL players that anyone playing in the PSL will be barred from the IPL as well. The BCCI is very much trying its best to isolate Pakistan Cricket.

India's cricket board chief Sourav Ganguly said Saturday the Indian Premier League will be truncated with the Twenty20 tournament pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The world's richest cricket league was postponed Friday, meaning instead of starting on March 29, it will begin on April 15 at the earliest after the Indian government ordered measures against travel and public gatherings.

Top officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) met franchise owners of the eight IPL teams in Mumbai to assess the situation.

"Safety is most important for the players and at the moment (with) what's going around in the world and India with the government directives this is all we can do. We have postponed remaining domestic matches," Ganguly told reporters.

"If it (IPL) is (postponed till) April 15, then, in any case 15 days are gone, it has to be a truncated one. How truncated, how many games, I can't say at the moment."

While the country of 1.3 billion has so far reported just two deaths from coronavirus and more than 80 confirmed cases, all sporting activities have been suspended.

India has stopped all domestic soccer and cricket events after two remaining one-day cricket internationals against a visiting South Africa side were called off on Friday.

Australians in IPL 2020

Chennai Super Kings: Josh Hazlewood, Shane Watson

Delhi Capitals: Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey

Kings XI Punjab: Glenn Maxwell

Kolkata Knight Riders: Pat Cummins, Chris Green

Mumbai Indians: Chris Lynn, Nathan Coulter-Nile

Rajasthan Royals: Steve Smith, Andrew Tye

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Aaron Finch, Kane Richardson, Josh Philippe

Sunrisers Hyderabad: David Warner, Billy Stanlake, Mitchell Marsh

But postponing the cash-rich IPL, which draws the world's top players from Australia, England and South Africa, and generates hundreds of millions of dollars in revenues each year, has dominated Indian headlines.

Ganguly, one of India's most successful India captains who became BCCI president last year, said everyone was forced to wait and see.

"We met with the owners, to tell them how it can happen and where do we stand at the moment. At the moment, it is just postponed. We will assess the situation," said Ganguly.

"It will be re-assessed every week. I can't say at the moment (about any deadline). It has to be worked around. As much as we want to host the IPL, we also need to be careful about the security."

The IPL is estimated to generate more than US$11 billion for the Indian economy and involves cricket's top international stars including Australia's Pat Cummins, the most expensive overseas player ever signed after he was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders for a staggering A$3.17 million.

That topped the previous mark of A$3m set by England allrounder Ben Stokes.

A total of 17 Australians have been signed up for this year's tournament.

The judges ruled that the BCCI had a moral responsibility to tour Pakistan and abide by the MOU but ruled that because of the political situation between the two countries nothing could be done.

They said that Bcci was not legally required to tour Pakistan and that PCB pay in excess of $1 mn in legal costs.

Give proof of these claims. Which player has said that he was threatened? Which board has said it was threatened?

Afghanistan still hasnt toured Pakistan.

BCB has done multiple leg tour as they had demanded.

If Bcci wanted to stop BD, they would have offered them a visit to India. Given all of their players IPL contracts.

As i said, you live in a parallel universe created by your hate for India and your sense of entitlement.

A day after the BCCI announced the suspension of the IPL until April 15 because of coronavirus outbreak, the cricket board’s president Sourav Ganguly hinted at reducing the number of games for the 2020 season. However, some franchise officials, were keen on a full IPL with the 2009 template.

Back then, the tournament was completed inside 37 days. As per the original schedule, the IPL 2020 was to be played from March 29 to May 24. In 2009, the then IPL boss Lalit Modi had taken the tournament to South Africa because it clashed with the general election in India. The IPL 2009 had started on April 18 and the final was played on May 24. A total of 59 matches had been played. Back then, the knockouts, after 56 group league fixtures, had two semifinals followed by the final. With two Qualifiers and an Eliminator, knockouts now have just one additional game.

On Saturday, the IPL governing council had a meeting with all the franchises in Mumbai and after that Ganguly said: “It (a truncated IPL) will happen, because if it is April 15, then it in any case 15 days are gone, it has to be truncated. How truncated, how many games, I can’t say at the moment. Until April 15 there are no visas (for foreign players).”

A top official from a franchise, however, cited the 2009 example while speaking to this paper. “We had an instance of holding the IPL in 37 days in South Africa. Fingers crossed, if the situation improves, we can follow that template. There’s no other window for the IPL, it has to happen in April-May. Hopefully, with summer approaching and a rapid rise in temperature, if we can start by April 20, we still might work on a full IPL,” he said.

Fewer venues
If the 2009 model is eventually followed, then playing the matches in a contained area – just two-three cities – could be an option, as it will reduce air travel and will lessen the logistics burden. “Today, the BCCI apprised us of the whole situation, why the IPL has had to be postponed, and we appreciate the BCCI’s stand in postponing it because it’s a must. We shouldn’t be looked at as if we are only looking at money, which is not the case. We are all worried about the pandemic. With regards to rescheduling, we haven’t put forward any proposal. It’s the BCCI’s call. They might meet us again in about two-three weeks’ time,” said a franchise CEO.

In case of a truncated IPL, separating eight teams into two groups of four teams each, more double headers – the original schedule has only six afternoon games – and same time fixtures at different venues have been considered as options.

On Friday, the BCCI took the decision to suspend the IPL 2020 until April 15, along with cancelling the India versus South Africa ODI series. Today, the cricket board decided to put all domestic matches on hold, including the Irani Cup to be played between Saurashtra and Rest of India at Rajkot from March 18-22, “till further notice”.

“Safety is most important. We will continue to monitor the situation. (Today) we met with them (franchise owners) to tell them how it can happen and where do we stand at the moment. At the moment, it is just postponed. We will assess it (the situation). It will be reassessed every week,” Ganguly said.

Today’s meeting was attended by all franchise owners. Everybody spoke about how public/players health and safety are of prime importance at the moment, given that coronavirus case count is on a sharp rise. The World Health Organization (WHO) has already declared COVID-19 a pandemic, with close to 1.5 lakh people are affected globally and over 5,000 deaths have been reported. In India, it has claimed two lives apart from affecting 83 people so far.

It’s not about money
Kings XI Punjab co-owner Ness Wadia made it clear that no stakeholder – BCCI, franchises, host broadcaster Star – wants to gain any monetary benefit by having the IPL at this time. “All the stakeholders, especially the BCCI and the owners and staff, feel that it is incorrect for us to even think about one rupee. So we are not interested in money. We are not interested in having any gain from this situation and try to hold the IPL without a clear understanding of the situation. The number one priority is to make sure that health and safety of everyone is looked after,” Wadia said after the meeting.

“There can be no compromise for even one human life. If we cancel the IPL and end up saving one life, it will be worth it. That is my personal opinion. It is better to be safe than sorry.”

“Wonderful to meet all the franchise owners ‘off the field’ so to say. The meeting by bcci and @ipl was to reiterate what all of us feel…safety first of the spectators, players management & cities we play in. All directives of the health agencies & govt to be followed..” Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan tweeted, adding: “Hope the spread of the virus subsides & the show can go on. BCCI & team owners in consultation with the govt will keep a close watch & decide the way fwd in the health interest of ever1. Lovely 2 meet every1 & then sanitise ourselves repeatedly..”

Parth Jindal of Delhi Capitals concurred. “Once the situation comes under control, all the options can be discussed,” he said.

Deep inside though, it is learnt that with nearly Rs 3,000 crore at stake, the BCCI and franchises combined, the possible revenue loss, if the IPL is eventually cancelled, remains an issue. The franchises were even ready to play behind closed doors before the BCCI had announced the postponement. In case of a cancellation, though, the franchises will not have to pay their contracted players any wages.

No foreigners, no IPL
This paper understands that during the meeting today, the franchises informed the BCCI that if the IPL has to played, it must be played with overseas players. “What we have said, we want to play the IPL with full players, with foreign players,” a franchise official said.

With all existing visas – except Diplomatic, UN/ International organisations, Officials, Project and Employment – are suspended until April 15, foreign players, coaches and support staff, who come here on Business visas, will have to wait.

My complaints about the attitude of the BCCI and Indian players, ex players and fans aside. A prestigious T20 league like the IPL does not deserve empty stadiums, abandoning one season will not dilute it at all

They should cancel IPL all together. The reason PSL carried on is because it was very close to the end.I don't know about India but the two months are going see rapid spread of coronavirus.I have no idea how is the virus spreading in India but I am sure it is going to shoot up(exponentially)

The Indian Premier League franchises might be working overtime with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to find ways to make the 13th edition of the IPL a reality - even when the coronavirus outbreak has brought life to a standstill -- but they are subconsciously ready to see the league get cancelled this season.

Speaking to IANS, an official of one of the franchises said that the owners will have a conference call at 6 p.m. on Monday, but things are getting a little dangerous as far as the pandemic is concerned.

“We are having a conference call today in the evening and we will discuss the situation, but just look around. Schools, colleges, malls, theatres have all been closed. In fact, even gyms have closed now after the fresh directive from the health department. So, in such a scenario, it is only obvious that we might get to a situation where the league may have to be called off for a season,” the official said.

Another official said that it was unanimously decided in the meeting with BCCI that safety is a priority and we all stand united in this. And considering how things stand, they might have to give the league a miss this year. Asked if the franchises are ready for the losses they will incur, the official said there was no other choice.

“See, we will be having basic loses of around Rs 15-20 crore which comes with paying salaries and other things that come with the successful organization of the league. But there are other loses as well like those that come from merchandise sales etc. While tickets and all are insured, these are loses which the franchises will have to bear if the tournament doesn’t happen. But then, we all realise that nothing beats human safety,” the official said.

While both the BCCI and the IPL franchises have spoken about the need to have the government allow foreign players to come in, the question is whether the foreign boards will allow their players to participate in these trying conditions. An official of one of the franchises said that too was a scenario that was being taken into consideration.

“Rightly pointed, even as we keep talking about getting foreign players their visas, what also needs to be checked is whether the foreign boards will allow their players to come in if and when the government makes an exception for the players. While all boards want the IPL to happen at present, you never know what the call will be at the end of the month. It all depends on whether we see a drastic positive change in the situation,” the official told IANS.

The government had on March 11 cancelled all visas, except for a few official categories, till April 15 in the wake of the growing coronavirus scare. In the meeting held at Nirman Bhavan in the national capital, it was decided that all existing visas, except diplomatic, official, UN/international organisations, employment and project visas, stand suspended till April 15.

The Sports Ministry also followed this up by making it clear that all sporting events should be cancelled in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. And, if it is unavoidable, the events should be held behind closed doors so as to avoid mass gatherings.

Cancel the IPL please. They must show some self respect and refuse to play such a premier tournament in front of zero crowds.

Why cancel? If situation is ok, it can be played in empty stadiums. Its better than cancellation.

India should withdraw from the Asia cup and hold the IPL then.

What about international players in IPL and other international schedule which is on hold itself. So window of international cricket is gonna be full whether India boycotts Asia cup or not.

International cricket is already decided as per FTP.

I really doubt that foreigners will take this risk. The BCCI will have no other option than to cancel it unless they are ready to play it mostly with locals.

Do you think the situation will be ok any time soon? According to experts, this whole saga could last anywhere between 6-12 months with everything in standstill

Kane Richardson about IPL2020:

We are just waiting to hear on IPL. A lot of the blokes have opinions, it's going to get canceled but again it can change in a day or a week, so I'll just sit by the phone and get ready to play for the 15th at the moment.

Not sure what the BCCI's stance is on that. But doubt that the foreigners would even consider it. A league like this is all about the foreign players the reason I dont see the IPL happening.

May be you have not read some comments from IPL fans here properly. According to them, IPL can survive without international players because the quality of indian IPL players is much better than even some international teams. :inti

International cricket is already decided as per FTP.

FTP? Everything is on hold including FTP tours. Also how will international players will be available as you cant have 1.5 or 2 months window afterwards especially with many tours already on hold waiting to be completed.

Anyways lets see how everything is handled.

Australian cricketers may have to forego their lucrative IPL contracts in the wake of the fast-spreading novel coronavirus, the local media reported on Tuesday. The IPL has been postponed till April 15 with India reporting more than 120 positive cases and three deaths. Cricket Australia has not directed the players officially with its chief executive Kevin Roberts on Tuesday saying that players were individually contracted to their IPL teams and can make up their own minds to compete in the 2020 IPL or not.

"We can provide advice. We're conscious of the fact that Australian players are individually contracted to the IPL and the time will certainly come very soon where players are going to be really interested and leaning on our perspective as their leader... to advise them in that regard," Roberts said.

"And then there will also be a perspective from the BCCI and their IPL division within that and together with our players and the BCCI, I am sure players will reach the best possible decisions in uncertain circumstances."

The Australian newspaper reported that Cricket Australia is reviewing whether it should permit its players to participate in the IPL or The Hundred series in the UK.

There are 17 Australian players contracted with different IPL franchises. The Australia report said that pacer Pat Cummins, former skipper Steve Smith, opener David Warner and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell could be asked to give up their rich contracts.

Cummins had become the highest paid overseas player in the history of the IPL with a contract worth $3.2 million with Kolkata Knight Riders.

Maxwell received a $2.2 million contract with Kings XI Punjab.

Cricket Australia has declared NSW the champions after scrapping the Sheffield Shield final.

Nature should be respected and all sports should be cancelled till June/July.

India should withdraw from the Asia cup and hold the IPL then.

Wow. Look at this post. What an idea. Hopefully this rubbish idea is thrown into the dustbin. Your circus got an unofficial window of 2 months already. Don't try to disturb international cricket for this nonsense league which has no importance whatsoever. :inti

As the uncertainty regarding the IPL 2020 grows, it now seems that the BCCI is keen on staging a full-fledged IPL instead of hosting a truncated season, for which it is targetting the window between July-September later this year.

A report in the Times of India suggests that the FTP programme between these three months is not as packed as others and that if all goes well, the BCCI would not shy away from staging the IPL anytime between July and September.

“The 2009 IPL – in South Africa – was played inside 37 days. That’s five weeks and two days. If that kind of a window is made available, the IPL can be held partly in India and partly overseas, or the entire tournament can be shifted, depending on how the Covid-19 situation is globally,” TOI quoted a source as saying.

As per the current FTP, the Asia Cup 2020 is supposed to be held in September in the United Arab Emirates. Besides, England are hosting Pakistan for three Tests and three T20Is between July 30 and September 2. Barring these two cricketing assignments and the inaugural edition of The Hundred which will see participation from cricketers around the world, teams like Australia, West Indies, New Zealand, South Africa , Sri Lanka and others do not have a crammed calendar.

This is where the BCCI is reportedly trying its best to slot the IPL this year. The edition which was supposed to start on March 29 was postponed to April 15 and there has been no update yet from the IPL governing council or team owners as to whether it will even take place. BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly hinted that if at all the IPL takes place, it will be a shortened one but two days later but an official decision is yet to be taken.

In the case of IPL, “with every week lost from a minimum of 37 days, nine to 11 matches have to be shaved off,” say industry executives. Only on the basis of this can scheduling take place.

Exatcly
Any league without international players and crowd look like a dead league

Look at psl as soon as they stopper crowd coming in and the foreigner players going out it look like a normal domestic match.

The intrests was gone.

Why not just cancel IPL why is BCCI being so greedy i am sure the it is insured and even than thwy have enough money to let 1 season go.

On top India is not even doing proper tests for covid19

India already has many domestic tourneys for that. The IPL is usually all about glamour dhoom dharaka and that wouldn't be complete without the foreign superstars.

So IPL is gonna take on the hundred in its inaugural edition? :virat

Not to forget there are quite a few players registered for both including the main English players.

Australia’s ODI skipper Aaron Finch has said that his country’s cricketers risk getting a massive financial jolt if the IPL and their home season are halted by the COVID-19 pandemic but they have to accept the situation as “we’re all in this together“.

Cricket Australia has already said that it may review the NOCs given to the players for IPL and now the government has imposed unprecedented travel restrictions, which are likely to jeopardise the Australian players’ participation in the postponed T20 league. The event which was to start on March 29, has now been set for April 15.

“That’s the risk you take when you have the revenue-share model, when the organisation takes a hit then so do we. We understand we’re all in this together,” Finch told radio station SEN.

“I’m sure in the long run, everything will be back to normal at some stage. It’s just hard to say when.”

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a blanket “do not travel overseas” advisory that will remain in place indefinitely, to help contain the coronavirus pandemic.

At least 17 cricketers have lucrative IPL contracts and a number of off-field positions are also at stake. Australia is also scheduled to host India for a Test series and the men’s T20 World Cup later this year.

Finch, who was scheduled to join India skipper Virat Kohli at the Royal Challengers Bangalore, acknowledged the travel advisory and expressed helplessness in this extraordinary situation.

“We’ve never seen anything like this. That (travel advice) has changed over the last couple of hours. That could change in two weeks or three weeks, it’s hard to plan anything,” he said.

“But it’s just about making sure everyone around you personally is safe and you’re doing everything you can to stop the spread.”

Pacer Pat Cummins had become the highest-paid cricketer during the IPL auction while Steve Smith, David Warner and Glenn Maxwell also grabbed lucrative deals.

Ricky Ponting is head coach of the Delhi Daredevils, while current men’s team assistant coach Andrew McDonald has the reins for the Rajasthan Royals.

Former Test batsman Simon Katich is coach of the Kohli-led RCB and is assisted by Tasmanian Tigers chief Adam Griffith.

The Sports Ministry has made it clear that the fate of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League can be decided only after the government comes out with a fresh advisory after April 15, keeping in mind the situation with regards to the coronavirus outbreak.

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju reiterated that while it is the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) which decides on cricketing matters, the pandemic is something which has a direct effect on the loves of the citizens of the country.

“After April 15 the government will come up with new advisory and guidelines according to the situation. BCCI is a body that looks after cricket which is not an Olympic sport. But here it is not the question of the sporting event alone but a question of the safety of the citizens. In an event there will be thousands of spectators. So it is not just for the sports bodies or sportspersons it is for every citizen of the country,” he said.

The BCCI earlier put the IPL on hold till April 15 even though the tournament was set to start from March 29 after the government issued a travel advisory which made it clear that foreign players wouldn’t be issued visas to come into the country. This was done in a meeting on March 11.

The Sports Ministry on March 12 made it clear that all sporting events should be cancelled in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. And if it is unavoidable, the events should be held behind closed doors so as to avoid mass gatherings.

The Delhi government went a step further and said that there would be no IPL matches in the national capital till March 31.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly also informed the media after the meeting with IPL franchise owners last Saturday at the BCCI HQ in Mumbai that all calls would be taken keeping in mind the advisory from the government.

With virus tsunami expected to hit India soon and most major sporting events around the globe either postponed or cancelled, it would be a folly to hold it as planned from the 15 April.

Chances are very slim, and most foreigners probably won't/unable to travel despite the monies.

So are franchises compelled to pay full amounts to the players/officials even if the tournament is completely cancelled?

I will be interested to see these Western Cricketers resist the temptation of playing in the IPL if the BCCI holds it inspite of the Coronavirus risks. Will their desperation to get that $1-3 million paycheque make them compromise on their personal health and safety? Will they start coming out with blanket statements "Solidarity with India and BCCI in this fight against Coronavirus"?

IPL 2020 Should be Cancelled Amid Coronavirus Scare, Urges Indian Government

Indian authorities on Thursday urged Indian Premier League (IPL) organizers to cancel the 13th edition of the T20 league keeping in mind the dangers of Coronavirus pandemic. The Indian government officials believe BCCI’s move to scrap the event will help the country to better tackle the situation of dealing with the COVID-19 threat. Earlier, the IPL organisers had already made it clear that they were ready to play in empty stadiums to keep the tournament on schedule.

It is believed that the final decision will be taken on Saturday when cricket chiefs and franchisee owners will meet to decide whether the T20 league. IPL is one of the most followed T20 tournament’s in the world which features some of the world’s top players.

Originally scheduled to start from March 29, the T20 extravaganza has been postponed to April 15 amid the Coronovirus crisis. Board of Control for Cricket, which has already slashed the prize money for the winners and runners-up, are ready to comply with every advisory to start the tournament on time.

The Indian board had also canceled the final two one-day internationals between India and South Africa. he opening match was washed out without a ball being bowled.

A spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs briefed the media in New Delhi and urged the sports federations to decide wisely on holding events.

“Think it is for the organisers to decide whether to go ahead with it or not,” Dammu Ravi, additional secretary, MEA and coordinator for COVID-19, said.

“Our advice would be to not do it at this time but if they want to go ahead, it is their decision.”

The stakes are huge. The 60-game league is said to generate more than $11 billion a year to the Indian economy and Chinese mobile-maker Vivo paid $330 million to be the top sponsor for 2018-2022.

“We are keen to start the IPL on time even if it means without crowds,” a senior BCCI official was quoted by AFP on condition of anonymity.

“It could be TV-only as it is a medical emergency and we can do nothing about that.”

However, it will not be an easy task for the board to obtain visa for foreign cricketers as the new visa restrictions have closed the doors for 60+ international stars including the likes of Australia’s David Warner and England’s Ben Stokes.

Some activist groups have launched cases at the Supreme Court and courts in Chennai and Mumbai to halt the league.

On Thursday, Sports Ministry has made it clear that the fate of IPL can be decided only after the government comes out with a fresh advisory after April 15.

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju reiterated that while it is the BCCI which decides on cricketing matters, the pandemic is something which has a direct effect on the loves of the citizens of the country.

Lol at the BCCI desperation to play such a prestigious tournament in front of empty crowds. Will be even more hilarious to see these western cricketers protest their governments over being forbidden from playing in the IPL

IPL should either be postponed or cancelled. The situation is going to get worse in England and Australia making it difficult for those players to travel. Also playing in empty stadiums isn't the answer and doesn't make for an enjoyable spectacle.

It doesn't seem like IPL will start on April 15. Coronavirus is starting to hit South Asia hard now.

All the best but I don't see IPL happening in April.

Corona hasn't even started peaking in Canada yet. Wait till it starts spreading like wildfire in a country like India where hygenic practices is borderline laughable. Forget IPL.

I dont think it works this way. Tournament needs to take place and players need to play in that to get paid.

if IPL were to happen today all players will still que up to go - The fact is IPL money is only realistic chance for Non-Indian cricket to rival other sports in terms of money and they simply cant let that go.

I am not arguing that. My point was regarding that players are only paid if the play in the tournament and obviously if a tournament takes place.

Plenty of sportsmen are getting paid in full because of this virus

Mark my words, these players who have signed on will get paid every penny of their contract even if they do not travel to India

Time will tell who is right and who is wrong.

I said it here first, these players will all get paid in full

You can already tell Warner has got some kind of insurance in place that's why his agent came out and say if the IPL goes ahead he will go to the tournament there is no other reason why such statement was needed at this stage. He is worried about he may not get paid if the insurance companies challenge he may not have gone anyway etc.

These gora and foreign players keep proving paisa phenko Tamasha dekho. David Warner has withdrawn from the English hundred tournament because he was only getting paid $150,000 but has stated he is willing to play in the IPL in the present situation even if it is held in a haphazard manner in front of empty stadiums.

These foreign players don't give a damn about principles, concerns or safety, it's all about the money

What are they waiting for? Just cancel it already. The Euro 2020 is already postponed to 2021.

So you decide the principles of the foreign players?

So you decide the principles of the foreign players?

Absolutely. The double standards and greed are for all to see. These guys will play in Syria if they are offered $5-10 million. Anthony Joshua had no issues fighting in Saudi Arabia where the human rights record is questionable but why would he care if he is offered $85 million to fight there

Well if they do make the crazy decision of playing can they please ask all players umpires etc not to elbow shake at the end of the game. Just looked stupid in the PSL. Play the game, and go back to your dressing room and then hotel. Dont create this circus of elbow butting etc

I find it contrasting that so many foreign players flew back from the PSL immediately once this Coronavirus thing broke out but not that the epidemic is peaking and getting worse, they are still willing to fly to the IPL and play inspire of empty stadiums. Is the $1-3 million paycheque really worth the health risks? I guess so

Do you still think that these foreign players love India and Indian culture? If yes, then you are delusional. It's all about money. If tomorrow Afghanistan offers twice the money they are getting in IPL, they will happily go there too. :inti

I think this virus can spread by touching a cricket ball too which obviously can't be avoided by players, umpires and ball boys. Just cancel this circus for this year. As I said earlier it's not that important anyway. :inti

No, he is pointing out the hypocrisy of the players. The players will do as they do, but we are on a discussion forum and we are allowed to point their hypocrisy.

He loves killing the discussion at hand. Questioning the sources, credibility, poster's right to reply are his predictable responses. :inti

Every passing day is getting bad and a week seems like a different world. India is 3 weeks behind U.K supposedly, if that is the case then by 15th April it will be on lockdown and people will be concerned about surviving and not cricket.
The players themselves will not want to risk themselves at that point and will forget the money.

Honestly the subcontinent will reach its peak at around late April. It is almost impossible to expect the IPL to take place

The situation will only get worse in 2-3 weeks im india Theres no way the IPL should be going ahead in the next few weeks

I don't see any cricket happening till July.

In Asia there will be no cricket atleast until next summer - The peak will be around July / august

Lol Mathew Hayden disrespectfully called India a third world country in 2008. All that went away when the $1-3 million IPL cheques became available.

The virus will peak around May/June, and is still a huge problem now. I seriously doubt any sport, let alone the IPL , will see the light of day so soon. Even the EPL is asking for too much to expect the return to be by the end of April.

Big if on normal life returning by summer. August or September seems more likely

They won’t play and get paid in full.

Only Indian players are insured, foreign players are not. So, if IPL doesn’t happens then Indian players will get paid by insurance, whereas Overseas players will not be paid.

There is no way foreign players are going to travel to India. No one has any idea when coronavirus will be fully under control. Many upcoming major sporting events have been cancelled.I am sure the Tokyo Olympics will not take place.

Foreign players will be willing to go to Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan if they are offered $10 million. I am just shocked the Indian govt and the BCCI don't have the balls and guts to stomach financial losses when they have all the evidence in the world that this virus is very serious and contagious. The fact that BCCI is willing to expose Foreign players to health risks because they don't want to stomach the gigantic losses is shocking and i expected much better from Ganguly who has only turned out to be just like all the other BCCI officials before him.

You think the PCB wanted to cancel the PSL and face losses given the recession they have had to deal with in Pakistan Cricket with no international cricketing activity taking place in Pakistan since 2009? But they eventually made that decision because money is not everything in the world.

Being the richest cricket board in the world, one would have expected the BCCI to be able to absorb this loss unless their finances are not as solid as everyone believes?

Cricket Australia and England are facing gigantic losses by cancelling their international and domestic tournaments but they are manning up and stomaching it as they know in the larger scheme of things, money is not everything in comparison to safeguarding human lives.

The Inds are playing a clever game by not cancelling the tournament, and hoping that the Foreign players just pull out and then they don't have to pay them. The Foreign players are hypocrites, so the Inds are playing this well.

Lol if the tournament gets cancelled the foreign players dont get paid anyways. But the foreign players in their desperation for that $1-3 million paycheque are not going to pull out even at the expense of their health, heck they may even protest against their governments if they ban them from going and will demand compensation.

The Indians can show their humanity by just cancelling the tournament and for once prove to the entire world that money is not everything in life especially in front of human lives and in this time of crisis, the BCCI is failing.
