Mumbai Indians have retained Surya Kumar Yadav while Sunrisers Hyderabad have let go of their street smart all-rounder Rashid Khan. The eight franchises made their retention list public on Tuesday which threw up some surprises. MS Dhoni wasn’t the top retention for CSK, it was Ravindra Jadeja who was offered a whopping 16 Cr. Similarly, Punjab Kings had to release KL Rahul as he wasn’t keen to play for the franchise, coach Anil Kumble informed. Local boy Surya Kumar Yadav not only was retained, he was third on the list which means he was ahead of Kieron Pollard in priority.

We take a look at how the eight teams stack up after tonight:

Mumbai Indians

Contrary to the news reports, SKY was retained by the five-time IPL champions alongside skipper Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Kieron Pollard. Also, Yadav was the third retention on the list which means he was ahead of Pollard in the list.

Rohit Sharma - INR 16 Crore, Jasprit Bumrah - INR 12 Crore, Suryakumar Yadav - INR 8 Crore, Kieron Pollard - INR 6 Crore

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers fans will be the most disappointed as they have let go of David Warner as well. Rashid and Warner once formed the core of this side. They have retained Kane Williamson and gambled big on two long-term investments in Abdul Samad and Umran Malik. While the former can be a handy all-rounder, the latter has clocked speeds of excess of 150 in the recently concluded IPL.

Kane Williamson - INR 14 Crore, Abdul Samad - INR 4 Crore, Umran Malik - INR 4 Crore

Rajasthan Royals:

Few surprises came from Rajasthan Royals as well where the likes of Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer were released. Instead, the management picked Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler and Mumbai’s young batter Yashaswi Jaiswal. While Stokes missed the majority of last season with mental health issues, Archer too remained injured. The management had spent a whopping 12.5 crore on the former in the last mega auction in 2018.

Sanju Samson: - INR 14 Crore, Jos Buttler - INR 10 Crore, Yashaswi Jaiswal - INR 4 Crore

Chennai Super Kings:

Meanwhile as expected, Chennai Super Kings retained MS Dhoni, top performer Ruturaj Gaikwad, all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali. Ali was given preference over Faf du Plessis as the latter is 37; moreover, Ali’s spin can come in handy at Chepauk. With the IPL 2021 trophy in the cabinet, the management was quite confident about its top four retentions.

Ravindra Jadeja - INR 16 Crore, MS Dhoni - INR 12 Crore, Moeen Ali - INR 8 Crore, Ruturaj Gaikwad - INR 6 Crore

Royal Challengers Bangalore:

Even though Virat Kohli stepped down as their captain, Royal Challengers Bangalore retained the batting superstar who has represented them since the league’s inception in 2008. Kohli along with Australia’s Glenn Maxwell and India’s Mohammad Siraj are the three retentions by the franchise. With Kohli now looking to play purely as a player and ABD hanging his boots, it needs to be seen who the franchise goes after in the mega auction in January 2022. This means they have released Yuzvendra Chahal and top performer of IPL 2021 Harshal Patel.

Virat Kohli - 15 Crore, Glenn Maxwell - 11 Crore, Mohammed Siraj - 7 Crore

Delhi Capitals:

Delhi have retained skipper Rishabh Pant which meant that Shreyas Iyer was released. Besides Pant, Prithvi Shaw was the second retention on the list as Iyer had dropped out since he wanted the captaincy. Anrich Nortje and Axar Patel were the other retentions. The likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Ravi Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada will now be heading for the mega auction.

Rishabh Pant - INR 16 Crore, Axar Patel - INR 9 Crore, Prithvi Shaw - INR 7.5 Crore, Anrich Nortje - INR 6.5 Crore

Kolkata Knight Riders:

KKR have retained Sunil Narine and Andre Russell. Surprisingly, these two were retained back in 2018 as well. However, KKR have also retained Venkatesh Iyer who had a sublime IPL 2021. The all-rounder played a key role in KKR’s resurrection. He can also come lower down the order and double up as a medium pacer. Instead of Shubman Gill, the management has preferred mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy.

Andre Russell - INR 12 Crore, Varun Chakaravarthy - INR 8 Crore, Venkatesh Iyer - INR 8 Crore, Sunil Narine - INR 6 Crore

Punjab Kings:

With the plethora of young stars available in Shahrukh Khan and Ravi Bishnoi, Punjab Kings preferred uncapped Arshdeep Singh. Looking at his recent numbers, the move seems a no-brainer, but choosing Mayank Agarwal over India pacer Mohammed Shami definitely raises some eyebrows. They also chose to ignore Windies’ Nicholas Pooran who can be an effective T20 batter. Punjab have been the least successful IPL side. Their best finish came in 2014 where they finished as runners up.

Mayank Agarwal - INR 14 Crore, Arshdeep Singh - INR 4 Crore

I think the wording should be corrected to saying that "Rashid chose to leave" and enter the auction. He believes (and rightly so) he can fetch more than what SRH were offering him as their 1st retained player so they had to go with Kane Williamson.

Rahul and Shreyas have also chose to leave. Same for Yuzi.

But seriously can't believe Sanju Samson is earning 14 crore for one season. Who is he really and what has he done in international cricket to get this much bucks, nowhere near the scheme of things in test cricket or ODI cricket and didn't even got selected in 18 man WT20 team. No way should be be getting that much.

I do not think any of this money is paid to players based on how they have performed against International Teams. This money is paid based on the player's performance in previous T20 leagues. And these teams are not just looking at stats, but they scout a player and evaluate them based on their strengths and weaknesses.

You could say his agent might be one of the best in the business in presenting his client in the brightest possible light and talking about how he singlehandedly won game for Royals in last couple of years with the likes of Butler and Stokes in the same team.

Maybe Royals are making a mistake and are paying him more than he could have gotten from another franchise (which I do not believe is the case), but you cannot say that he or any player for that matter does not deserve to make the money they are making. Players in general make only fraction of total revenue that is generated by the product and players are the biggest and most important component of the product so if a player is making money, let them make their money.

KKR retains 33 year old over the hill, out of form, partially international players and let go off Gill,Cummins etc.

If only the gods will have mercy on my city and someone will buy out this team management.

Both Gill and Cummins are not T20 players.

IPL 2022 mega auction likely to be held in Bengaluru on February 7 and 8.

The BCCI is planning to hold the two-day mega Indian Premier League auction on February 7 and 8 in Bengaluru.

The BCCI is planning to hold the two-day mega Indian Premier League auction on February 7 and 8 in Bengaluru, a senior BCCI official said on Wednesday.

It could well be the last mega auction that BCCI might conduct as most of the original IPL franchises want it to be discontinued.

"Unless the COVID-19 situation worsens, we will have the IPL mega auction in India. The two-day event will be held on February 7 and 8 and like other years, we plan to hold it in Bengaluru. Preparations are underway," a senior BCCI official said on conditions of anonymity.

There were reports that auction will be held in the UAE but as of now, BCCI has no such plans.

However with the emergence of Omicron variant of COVID-19 and cases on the rise, the situation will remain fluid but if there are restrictions with regards to overseas travel (unless all owners decide to use charter planes), conducting it in India will be less of a logistical nightmare.

This year's IPL will be a 10-team affair with Sanjiv Goenka owned Lucknow franchise along with venture capital firm CVC owned Ahmedabad making their debut in the cash rich league.

CVC is however waiting for its Letter of Intent from the BCCI but is expected to get an all clear in the next few weeks. Both teams have time till Christmas to announce their three draft picks but BCCI might extend the dates for both as CVC is yet to get clearance.

Most of the franchise owners feel that mega auctions have passed their sell-by-date and a team's composition and balance gets severely compromised when there are auctions after every three years.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) extended the deadline for players' registration for the upcoming mega auction ahead of the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to January 20. A two-day auction will take place in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13 as many top Indian and overseas players are set to go under the hammer.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, several top Australian and England players are having second thoughts about their participation in the mega auction due to bio-bubble fatigue. The report mentioned the names of England skipper Joe Root and star all-rounder Ben Stokes, Australian Test captain Pat Cummins and pacer Mitchell Starc, who are contemplating putting their names up for grabs in the auction.

Root already cleared that he wouldn't be taking part following his side's 4-0 drubbing in the Ashes series in Hobart. "I didn't (give name for auction), no, I think that there's a lot that we need to do for this team, which deserves all of my energy. I really hope I get the opportunity to do it. I'll keep sacrificing as much as I can because I care so much about Test cricket in our country and trying to get us to where we can," Root said after the series.

Starc, on the other hand, a few days ago had said that taking part in the IPL could be a possibility given the T20 World Cup coming in later this year. "I've got two days to get my paperwork in, so that might be something to do today before training. I've not put my name down just yet, but I've got a couple more days to decide on that. It's certainly on the table regardless of what the schedule has got coming up," Starc was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

However, not just Starc, many other multi-format Australian players are in doubt given the tight international schedule in the first half of 2022. After the recently concluded Ashes series, their trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand arrive for three ODIs and a T20 followed by five T20Is against Sri Lanka at home.

After which, they travel to Pakistan for a multi-format tour followed by another white-ball tour to New Zealand before the players head to the IPL. Thus, bubble fatigue could force many Australian players out of participation in the 15th edition of the cash-rich league.

For the 15th consecutive year, Virat Kohli will don the Royal Challengers Bangalore's jersey in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The only player to play for just one franchise in every IPL season, Kohli was retained by RCB on the retention day. Though he will only be available as a player from now on as he had stepped down as the captain before the start of the 2nd phase of IPL 2021.

Despite leaving captaincy, Kohli was RCB's first-choice pick and bagged a contract worth Rs 15 crore. The mega-contract will see him breach the elusive 150-crore mark in the coming IPL season.

Kohli, who had a salary of Rs 17 crore from IPL 2018 to 2021, will become the 3rd player to draw a salary of more than Rs 150 crore in IPL. The former RCB skipper has earned more than Rs 143 crore as a salary in IPL so far. And this year, he will draw a cheque worth Rs 15 crore, which will see him breaching the 150-crore mark.

Interestingly, Kohli has never been part of an IPL auction. He was picked up by RCB during the U-19 players' draft for Rs 12 lakh back in 2008. He was the only player to be retained by RCB in 2011 and drew Rs 8.28 crore every year from 2011 to 2014.

In 2015, he got another promotion and earned Rs 12.5 crore every year till 2017. In 2018, RCB retained him for a record amount of Rs 17 crore. No other player has matched this amount yet.

Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma will also breach the 150 crore-mark this year. He has drawn a salary of more than 146 crore so far. Rohit was retained by MI for Rs 16 crore.

MS Dhoni, the first player to breach the 150 crore-mark, has earned more than Rs 152 crore. He was retained by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 12 crore on IPL 2022 retention day.

KL Rahul has been named as captain of the Lucknow franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. Marcus Stoinis and Ravi Bishnoi are the two other draft picks of the team.

This puts an end to several days of speculation after Punjab Kings have revealed while naming their retained players that Rahul had turned down the franchise's offer to retain him.

Rahul has been a run machine at the top of the order for Punjab since moving to the franchise but he could not lead the side to the knock-outs as captain.

Rahul has been picked for Rs. 17 crore while Stoinis and Bishnoi have been signed for Rs. 9.2 crore and Rs. 4 crore, respectively.

Marcus Stoinis is a huge pick by the Lucknow team as he has been an integral part of Delhi Capitals side over the past few seasons, when the team qualified for their maiden IPL final (2020) and also made it to the knock-outs in the rest of the two seasons (2019 and 2021).

Not just that, Stoinis was a key member of the Australian team that won the ICC T20 World Cup last year and has been in great form in the ongoing Big Bash League too.

The third pick is another former Punjab Kings player. Impressive young spinner Ravi Bisnoi has been named as the third pick by Lucknow and the decision clearly has KL Rahul's stamp all over it as Bishnoi had played and done well under Rahul's captaincy.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 auction is all set, with a total of 1214 players registering for the T20 league this year. Of these, the likes of David Warner, Pat Cummins, Mark Wood, Quinton de Kock, etc. are the biggest overseas players to have put their names for the season 15.

The entire 1214-player list was shared with the 10 IPL franchises on Friday night as well as the base price for which these players have registered themselves. Mark Wood, who has only played 1 match in the IPL, back in the 2018 season, has put his name forward for the bidding war. He is one of the most sought-after players in the world at the moment and is expected to trigger a bidding-war at the auction next month.

INR 2 crore remains the biggest bracket under which the players have registered themselves. Some of the players in this category are: Pat Cummins (Australia), David Warner (Australia), Steve Smith (Australia), Quinton de Kock (South Africa), Faf du Plessis (South Africa), Kagiso Rabada (South Africa), Dwayne Bravo (West Indies) and Mark Wood (England).

Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen are some of the South African players who have put their names forward in the INR 50 lakh category.

From a total of 1214 players, 896 are Indian players while as many as 318 are overseas players. In terms of capped and uncapped bifurcation, 270 are capped while 903 are uncapped. 41 players are from Associate nations like Nepal, UAE, Oman, Scotland and the Netherlands. As many as 14 players are from the USA.

It has to be noted that no franchise can have a maximum of 25 players in the squad. A total of 33 players have been either retained or drafted by the 10 franchises ahead of the auction.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah on Saturday confirmed that the IPL 2022 season will begin in the last week of March and the season will conclude in May. "I am delighted to confirm that the 15th season of the IPL will start in the last week of March and will run until May end. A majority of the team owners expressed their wish that the tournament be held in India. The BCCI was always keen on staging the 2022 edition that will see two new teams - Ahmedabad and Lucknow - in India," Shah said in an official statement.

"I can tell you that we will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that IPL stays in India. The BCCI has not compromised on the health and safety of its stakeholders in the past and will concurrently work on Plan B since the COVID-19 situation with new variants remains fluid. The mega IPL Auction will take place on February 12-13th and we will lock in venues before that," he added.

The IPL player registration closed on January 20 and a total of 1,214 players (896 Indian and 318 overseas) have signed up to be part of the 2022 player auction.

The two-day mega auction will see 10 teams bidding for some of the finest talents in world cricket. The players' list incorporates 270 capped, 903 uncapped, and 41 Associate players.

The detailed list is as follows: Capped Indian (61 players), Capped International (209 players), Associate (41 players), Uncapped Indians who were a part of previous IPL seasons (143 players), Uncapped International who were a part of previous IPL seasons (6 players), Uncapped Indians (692 players), and Uncapped Internationals (62 players).

Matthew Wade deserves a bit of reward as well this IPL season :inti

Wow! 15 years of the IPL.

I remember all the discussions back in the first, second and even the third season on how the IPL will not last. But here we are 15 years later. It is set to become more valuable than Indian international cricket.

Well done to all the people involved in building a brand and capturing the imagination and following of its targeted fans.

Dare I say it has changed cricket.

Hopefully some more no name local and foreign cricketers get a life changing Crores Offer, which will change their life for good. With 10 teams expect some surprise names to get really good Dollars.

The BCCI on Saturday (January 22) released the list of 1214 players who have registered for the IPL 2022 auction. As many as 17 Indian players have set their base price at Rs 2 crore while few players have also lowered their base price. Former India pacer S Sreesanth has set his base price at Rs 50 lakh.

While many T20 veterans will be entering the IPL 2022 auction, there are also several players who won't be part of the league this year. From Chris Gayle to Mitchell Starc, here's a look at a few notable omissions from the players' list -

Chris Gayle

The biggest name who has decided against registering for the T20 league is Chris Gayle. Since Gayle had even skipped international cricket to play IPL, he was expected to once again throw his hat in the ring. But the Universe Boss surprisingly decided against entering the auction.

Gayle, who is plying his trade in the Bangladesh Premier League, would have struggled to get a bid. In 2018, he went unsold twice and only got a bid on day 2 at his base price. His performances too haven't been up to the mark of late and it looks like he has played his last IPL match.

Mitchell Starc

A few days back, Mithcell Starc hinted at making his comeback to the T20 league after 6 years. But his name was surprisingly absent from the players' list. Starc, who was slated to make his comeback to IPL in 2018 after being bought by Kolkata Knight Riders, has only played for Royal Challengers Bangalore so far.

His continued absence from IPL hints that the left-arm pacer isn't keen on playing the league and will extend his fans' wait for a few more years. In Starc's absence, a couple of his national teammates have earned big bucks. And the same could be the case this year as well.

Jofra Archer

One of the highest earners in IPL in the past couple of years, Jofra Archer has unsurprisingly decided against entering the IPL 2022. His elbow has been troubling him for nearly 2 years and has seen him miss T20 World Cup and Ashes 2021/22. Archer will be managing his workload and might only play limited white-ball matches.

He recently kicked off training with the England cricket team in West Indies but there is no news on his return to competitive cricket for now. Archer is among one of the most notable absentees from the auction.

Sam Curran

A member of MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) which won the IPL 2021 trophy, Sam Curran has surprisingly decided against entering the IPL 2022 auction. The young all-rounder has recovered and started net practice. But Curran is aiming to make a comeback in the Test team and will play county cricket instead of IPL. England's season kicks off in April.

"It was agreed that sadly I should not enter the IPL auction this year and to focus on my rehabilitation. I’m back in the nets and feeling great so hope to be back soon, Wishing everyone all the best for the tournament. I look forward to starting the season with @surreycricket," he wrote on Twitter on Saturday (January 22).

He had joined CSK for Rs 5.5 crore in IPL 2020. A year before that, he had joined Punjab Kings for Rs 7.2 crore. Tom Curran, Sam's brother, will also miss the season.

There are 318 overseas players registered for about 80 or so slots. Majority of them are going to go back disappointed and empty handed.

The new Lucknow-based Indian Premier League team will be called the Lucknow Super Giants, the franchise's owners have confirmed.

They will be one of two new teams in this year's IPL along with a franchise based in Ahmedabad.

The Super Giants will be captained by India batter KL Rahul.

A 'mega auction' will be held next month to fill all 10 squads after teams were able to retain up to four players from their 2021 squads last year.

Moeen Ali (Chennai Super Kings) and Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals) were the only England players retained.

The new teams were able to sign three unretained players to start their squads.

As well as Rahul, the Super Giants signed Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and uncapped 21-year-old Indian leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi.

The Ahmedabad team signed India all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who will be their captain, Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan and India opener Shubman Gill.

A total of 1,214 players have signed up for the mega auction. The 2022 IPL is due to be played in the spring.

The IPL has always been a tournament where talent and opportunity coexist and India’s U19 stars such as Yash Dhull, Vicky Ostwal, Rajvardhan Hangargekar and some of the talked-about Indian cricketers such as Devdutt Padikkal, Harshal Patel, Krunal Pandya, Shahrukh Khan, Deepak Hooda, and Avesh Khan will be looking to cash in and make their mark during the auction and then, in the competition.

A total of 370 Indian players and 220 overseas players will be up for grabs in what promises to be an action-packed IPL 2022 Player Auction in Bengaluru.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced the full list if 590 cricketers who will go under the hammer during the two-day mega-auction for the 2022 season of the Indian Premier League which will take place in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13, 2022.

Among the 590 players registered for the auction, 228 are capped international cricketers, 355 are uncapped and 7 belong to Associate Nations. Out of those 590, 370 are Indians and the remaining 270 are overseas players. And these 590 players will hope to bag a deal as 10 IPL franchises - Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Team Ahmedabad - will place their bids over the two days to rope in some of the biggest cricketing names.

INR 2 crore remains the highest reserve price with 48 cricketers falling in that bracket. 20 players a reserve price of INR 1.5 crore while 34 players are in the list of cricketers with a reserve price of INR 1 crore.

R Ashwin Trent Boult, Pat Cummins, Quinton de Kock, Shikhar Dhawan, Faf du Plessis, Shreyas Iyer, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Shami and David Warner are the 10 cricketers marked as marquee players, who will be part of the auction pool.

The pool also includes some of the U-19 stars of the ongoing World Cup tournament in West Indies such as Yash Dhull, Vicky Ostwal, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, alongside some of the promising talked-about Indian cricketers such as Devdutt Padikkal, Harshal Patel, Krunal Pandya, Shahrukh Khan, Deepak Hooda, Avesh Khan who will be looking to cash in and make their mark during the auction and then, in the competition.

interesting Jofra archer has listed himself in the auction even though he probably wont be fit for the tournament. Rumours are that some teams are looking to snap him up as an investment for next season as his pice will be lower this time around, would he still get paid if he got selected but was injured for the tournament?

interesting Jofra archer has listed himself in the auction even though he probably wont be fit for the tournament. Rumours are that some teams are looking to snap him up as an investment for next season as his pice will be lower this time around, would he still get paid if he got selected but was injured for the tournament?

But he's unlikely to play this season, the ECB has informed that he's sure to play 2023 and 2024 season.

Guys like Sanju Samson don't deserve 14 crore. He is not among the best 50 Test cricketers in India and not even among the best 30 ODI cricketers in the country but on what basis is he getting 14 crore? This is joke :inti

The addition of Jofra Archer's name to the final list of players up for the IPL 2022 mega auction left many surprised. The premier pacer hadn't registered for the T20 league originally but made it to the final list of players. Despite being added to the final list, Archer isn't confirmed to play IPL 2022.

He is still recovering from the elbow injury and is yet to play a game since July 2021. Archer's availability for this year's IPL is highly doubtful but he will be there from IPL 2023. Hence, buying him will be more of a future investment.

Before the IPL 2022 mega auction, the BCCI has informed the IPL franchises that Archer will not be among marquee players and his name will only be announced in the accelerated auction. In addition to that, the team buying him won't be allowed to pick his replacement if he doesn't land in India.

"He won't feature in the Marquee or other sets to be presented. He will be available to be called during the accelerated auction and whoever picks him will not get a replacement player for IPL 2022 season for his place as he is already injured and unlikely to participate in IPL 2022 season," the BCCI has written to IPL franchises, the Cricbuzz has reported.

There have been cases of the players being ruled out of a complete season after bagging a deal. With an eye on the future, a few IPL franchises might bid for Archer.

The 26-year-old has made much impact in only playing 3 seasons he has played. After joining Rajasthan Royals (RR) for Rs 7.2 crore in IPL 2018, he scalped 15 wickets in 10 matches in his first season. In 2019, he scalped 11 wickets in as many matches while in 2020, he dismissed 20 batsmen in 14 matches.

The IPL 2022 mega auction will take place on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. The 15th edition of the T20 league will be played in India.

With two new teams and 590 players all hoping to land a lucrative and perhaps life-changing deal, this year's Indian Premier League mega auction - as the name suggests - is going to be huge.

The world's richest cricket competition will return for its 15th edition on 2 April, with the final taking place on 2 June as Chennai Super Kings look to defend their crown.

But before focus turns to matters on the field, franchises will battle it out in a two-day bidding frenzy in Bangalore this weekend.

Experience over youth? Blow your budget on marquee names? Or take a gamble on an unknown player? From the ins and outs of how the auction works to the global superstars up for grabs, this guide will tell you all you need to know about the 2022 IPL mega auction.

Plus, at the bottom, you can get a taste of what it's like to be an IPL franchise owner by picking your top three from 10 star players in this year's auction.

David Warner

Former Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner, who starred for Australia in the T20 World Cup last year, is up for auction
CSK beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 27 runs in last year's IPL final, but their hopes of equalling Mumbai Indians' record five-trophy haul may prove to be slightly more difficult this year; the introduction of Lucknow Super Giants and the Gujarat Titans from Ahmedabad takes the number of IPL teams to 10.

There will be 370 Indian players and 220 overseas players up for auction, 49 of which have set their baseline price at the top 20 million (2 crore) Indian Rupees (£196,706) mark.

Among those is the player of the T20 World Cup and IPL veteran David Warner. The opening batter, with 5,449 runs in 150 matches, is the top overseas (and fifth overall) run-scorer in IPL history.

Warner's World Cup winning team-mates Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc are also available and we may see a hotly-contested bidding war for other overseas names such as South Africa trio Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock and Kagiso Rabada, and New Zealand's Trent Boult.

But it's not just the overseas players who franchise owners will be vying to sign; a host of experienced and well-known Indian cricketers are also available.

Delhi Capitals did not retain opener Shikhar Dhawan, who enjoyed a stellar 2021 campaign with 587 runs, and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who despite a disappointing IPL last year is still the sixth highest wicket-taker in IPL history with 145 dismissals in 167 games.

Seamer Deepak Chahar, who is also handy with the bat, has been CSK's leading wicket-taker over the last four seasons but is now free to join any team, while spinner Yuzvendra Chahal - formerly of Royal Challengers Bangalore - could also go for big money.

Explosive batter Shreyas Iyer, released by finalists KKR, and wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan, who played for Mumbai Indians, are two of the other Indian stars on offer.

Eoin Morgan

There will be 24 England players up for auction, including World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan, who led KKR to last year's final, and wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow.

While Morgan struggled with the bat last year, averaging just 11 in 17 matches, his experience and leadership skills will hold him in high regard.

Bairstow, meanwhile, averaged 41.33 at a strike-rate of 141.71 in seven matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad and will expect to be picked up by one of the franchises.

Jason Roy is a man in form, having smashed 116 from just 57 balls for Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League on Monday, while Liam Livingstone is one of the most feared batters in the game.

Adil Rashid is one of the top bowlers in limited-overs cricket and a player you may expect to be signed but, quite staggeringly, the 33-year-old leg-spinner has played just one match in IPL history.

England Test captain Joe Root did not put himself forward, while Ben Stokes - the most expensive player at the 2018 auction when he was signed by Rajasthan Royals - has ruled himself out of this year's tournament to concentrate on Test cricket.

Surprisingly, Jofra Archer has put his name up for auction but the fast bowler has not played cricket since July and is still recovering from elbow surgery. It is unlikely he will feature in this year's tournament, but he may be attractive to franchises who wants to build a team for future years.

Some of the other English stars who will be keeping a keen eye on the auction are Alex Hales, Sam Billings, Saqib Mahmood, Dawid Malan, Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills, Craig Overton, Ollie Pope, James Vince, David Willey and Mark Wood.

Teams from last year's IPL were permitted to retain up to four players, with the two new franchises signing three new players each before the auction.

The number of players retained by each franchise dictates their remaining budget at the auction, and teams can assemble squads of no more than 25 players each.

England's Jos Buttler can take the game away from any opponent and, having hit his maiden IPL century last year, has been kept on by Rajasthan Royals.

Moeen Ali proved his worth with some fine all-round performances for CSK last year and the all-rounder has subsequently been retained by the champions, alongside 40-year-old captain and India veteran MS Dhoni, who is still going strong.

India batter Virat Kohli stepped down as RCB skipper last year but, as one of the most popular athletes in world sport and the finest batters in the game, has unsurprisingly been retained by the franchise.

Super Giants have secured India duo KL Rahul and Ravi Bishnoi and Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, while Titans have also shown they mean business in their maiden IPL campaign by signing India's Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill and Afghanistan's superstar spinner Rashid Khan.

A lot of players are going to become multi-millionaires.

Punjab Kings have almost $10 million in their salary cap to spend. Probably best poised to pick up at least two huge stars. But even the franchise with the lowest salary cap room has about $6.5 million. There are enough players to make all the franchises happy.

I bet a lot of these players have a restless night upcoming before the auction.

I think tomorrow is a historic day for cricket. The kind of money in offer is insane. People will talk about this auction for long time as a land mark event for the game of cricket.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) are set to be the busiest team at the 2022 IPL mega-auction as they have the highest purse available. Having retained just two players ahead of the 15th edition of the league, PBKS have a purse of Rs. 72 Crores for the auction.

PBKS have kept hold of the services of Mayank Agarwal for a whopping salary of Rs. 14 Crore alongside uncapped left-arm pacer Arshseep Singh for Rs. 4 Crore. While the existing eight teams were allowed to retain upto four players, PBKS decided against doing it.

It is widely documented that PBKS wanted to retain ex-skipper KL Rahul but the player decided against staying with the franchise. The right-handed batter spent four years with the franchise and scored more than 550 runs every year despite the team failing to make the playoffs even once.

Following the retention announcement, Anil Kumble had spoken about PBKS' desire to retain Rahul but declared it was his choice to leave. The Indian ODI and T20I vice-captain has now joined the Lucknow Super Giants and will lead them in their first season in the league.

Who are Punjab Kings looking to buy?

PBKS are looking at a massive overhaul and need to find players for almost all position. Be it an able opening partner for Mayank, a solid middle-order, or an explosive bowling attack. While Mayank is an able captaincy option, they will be looking for a new captain at the auction.

Punjab have never won the IPL title and haven't reached the playoffs since 2014. Hence, the current auction is extremely important for them if they want to turn around their fortunes and build a successful side for the next few years.

$ billion auction apparently. Won't be surprised to see a player get picked up for $10-20 million by a franchise one day

It's the IPL 2022 Mega Auction day. The most valuable auction of the decade.
Starts in few minutes

Marquee players for IPL 2022 mega auction are Ashwin, Dhawan, Faf Du Plessis, De Kock, Shami, Boult, Cummins, Rabada, Iyer, Warner - these players will come from 12 pm IST.

161 players will go under the hammer on Day 1 in the mega auction 2022.

Day 1 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction is set to get underway in a few hours' time in Bengaluru.

Two new teams (Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants) will join the existing eight franchises Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals as 10 teams, their owners, coaches, support staffs, scouts and for some even the captains will join the bidding war in the two-day long IPL 2022 auction that starts today. The 15th edition of the tournament is likely to begin towards the end of March but before that, this auction will decide how the teams pan out for the next few seasons. IPL powerhouses like CSK, MI, KKR have retained as many four players and will enter the auction with a lighter purse along with DC, who too have retained four and have the least amount to spend in this auction. Punjab Kings, who retained only two ahead of the auction, have the biggest purse. But as the past IPL auctions have shown us, remaining purse is hardly an indicator of how strong a would shape up. If there is anything that is certain about the auctions, it is its uncertainty. The cricket world will have its eyes glued to the screen in excitement and anticipation when the IPL auction begins but not more than the 600 players who are set to go under the hammer in these two days.

Veteran auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapsed while conducting the first session of the Indian Premier League auction on Saturday but was found to be "doing fine" after a medical check-up. The 60-year-old's collapse midway into proceedings led to an early lunch at the ongoing event. "He has been attended to by a doctor. He is doing fine, his blood pressure dropped suddenly and that was the reason for his sudden collapse. We will know more once he has a thorough check-up," a BCCI source told PTI.

Edmeades, who has conducted over 2700 auctions across the globe, primarily of cars including an Aston Martin used in a James Bond film, had Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga's name under the hammer when he fell from his auction pedestal.

He was immediately stretchered off for medical attention and it came to light that he had suffered the fall due to low blood pressure.
