PM Imran says KP rejected 'traitors' as PTI leads in second phase of local govt polls

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday congratulated his party for "overwhelming success" in the second phase of local government elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying "people of KP have emphatically rejected the traitors who sold out to foreign masters".

The premier's felicitation came after initial results from 41 councils showed PTI emerging victorious in at least 20 tehsil councils.

On the remaining 21 slots, Jamiat Ulama-i-Islam – Fazl (JUI-F) leads in eight councils, followed by independent candidates in four, Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) in four, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in two, Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) in two and Awami National Party (ANP) in one council, according to data obtained from returning officers. However, official notifications are yet to be issued.

Jamaat-i-Islami, which had suffered a setback in the 2018 general elections in one of its strongholds of Lower Dir, appeared to be gaining lost ground as its candidates, according to initial results, emerged victorious in at least two out of seven tehsil councils.

The results on 24 seats are awaited. Polling was held for the slots of chairman and mayor in a total 65 tehsil councils.

In his tweet, the premier termed his party's visible success as an "early warning to all traitors", saying "this is what awaits them in their constituencies."

Planning Minister Asad Umar also tweeted that the PTI's "landslide victory" in the KP elections proved that the nation stood by its leader.

"Now the real decision will not be made through the no-confidence motion. The question is whether Pakistan's future will be decided by its people or a few sold-out politicians and their foreign masters," he said.

According to unofficial results, the PTI secured victory in six out of seven tehsil councils of Swat. One seat was bagged by a JUI-F candidate.

Likewise, PTI is leading in all three councils of Chitral and Malakand, as per the unofficial results.

In the Shangla district, PTI won in three councils out of four while one seat was secured by ANP.

Abdullah Khan, the brother of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, also won a seat in his ancestral Matta tehsil.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, elections for mayor and chairman slots were held in 65 city and tehsil councils as well as for various seats of 1,830 village and neighbourhood councils.

A total of 28,020 candidates were in the run, out of whom 651 contested for the seats of city and tehsil council mayor and chairman.

Besides, 12,980 candidates were vying for the general seats of village and neighbourhood councils, 2,668 for reserved seats for women, 6,451 for peasants, 5,213 for youth and 57 for minority seats.

In the first phase of the polls on December 19, 2021 in 17 districts of the province, JUI-F had bagged 23 slots of mayor/chairman of tehsil councils while PTI trailed behind with 18 seats.

Well the results don't lie. This is from KP local bodies election yesterday. Most of the independents are also PTI members who did not get a ticket so expected to join PTI now. Final tally for PTI will be 40+ out of 65 seats.

Do note that Billoo Rani is presented as an awami leader on here by a certain poster since his family personally benefits from PPP rule but PPP managed a grand total of 1 seat

The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has won the second phase of local government elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, dealing a heavy blow to the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), which registered huge gains in the first phase of voting over three months ago.

In the second phase, voting was held in 65 tehsils in 18 districts of the provinces on Thursday. The PTI, which had gained early lead in the vote count, was able to translate it into a polls victory as more and more complete results poured in on Friday.

In the second phase, polling also took place in 1,830 union councils. Till late Friday, the results from 48 tehsil councils were compiled, out of which PTI candidates had been declared winner in 19. However, the party claims victory in 32. In the second place ithe JUI-F was trailing with victory in 8 tehsil councils.

They are followed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) with 5 wins; Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), 3; Awami National Party (ANP), Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) and independents 2 each, and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), the Rah-e-Haq Party (RHP) and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) one each.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the PTI won in Barikot, Swat district; Bezai, Batkhela and Dargai, Malakand; Khal, Balambat and Adizai, Lower Dir; Larjam in Upper Dir; Puran and Bisham, Shangla; Mastuj, Chitral; Oghi, Mansehra and Tanawal and Abbottabad, Abbottabad.

The JUI-F won in Alai, Batgram, Timergarha, Lower Dir; Torghar; Upper Orakzai; Cheskar, Shangla; Bankat, Lower Kohistan; Kandian, Upper Kohistan and North Waziristan. Councils in Lora, Abbottabad; Besham and Cheskar, Shangla; Kalkot, Upper Dir and Mansehra went to the PML-N.

The ANP’s victories included Martang tehsil of Shangla; Darband tehsil of Mansehra; Lower Kohistan; North Waziristan; Dormela tehsil of Torghar; and Havelian tehsil of Ahbatabad. The JI won in the Samar Bagh tehsil of Lower Dir and Dir tehsil of Upper Dir.

State Minister for Information Farrukh Habib said that the PTI under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan swept the local government elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In a tweet, he said that stooges of external powers got the first result of public no-confidence in them.

The state minister tagged a copy of unofficial results of the K-P local government elections which showed PTI was winning 32 seats, while the independents were leading in 12, JUI-F in 7, PML-N in 4 and the PPP only in 1.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja appreciated the cooperation of law-enforcement agencies—Police, Pakistan Army, Frontier Constabulary and Frontier Corps on the successful completion of the local government election process in K-P.

He said that both the phases of the K-P local elections had been successfully completed and the manner in which all the institutions and departments concerned remained active was commendable. He hoped the local bodies elections in Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Islamabad, too, would be held successfully.

In the first phase, voting was held in 17 districts of the province on December 19, in which the JUI-F had won in 23 tehsils and towns. The PTI had come second with 19 seats, followed by nine independent candidates.

Only way to know for sure is to have an election. One side wants one another side is hiding.

Kp local bodies dont show anything

By elections will show result. People forget that imran only got 30 percent in popular vote

Had the biggest jalsa in Pakistan’s history where over a million people attended but no it's not popular party... the logic of beggars

1m in a population of 220m doesn’t mean much

I'm not talking votes, these were physical bodies in the parade ground. 1 million people gathered anywhere is considered big. Keep watching this space, Imran Khan will be with the people on the streets. You will see his popularity.

The other parties are running away from elections, that should be evident enough as to who is more popular

PTI is the most popular party in the country. Naysayers have always denied this and made stupid excuses because they want to not admit this reality. Can they convert this into street power is another issue. Also, PTI has a support base that cuts the entire social spectrum which means women, children, elderly, and middle-aged people all show up whenever there's a call for protest or a rally. The issue is that these people are not as disciplined as say, the mindless drones of JUI or the utter thugs of TLP who can be violent and are more organized.

No other party is close. Noon has a major vote bank in central Punjab and a few cities here and there but those people don't come out when needed. They can be categorized more in the tamashbeen category, who need to be paid money or given some incentive to attend political rallies but will vote for the Sharifs because they are strong belivers in the khata hai tau lagata bhi tau hai ideology.

PPP is a joke. Trash feudal party masquerading as the liberal left run by a boy king and his devlish father who is the prime suspect of killing at least two Bhuttos and ending the Bhutto bloodline so he never faces any legit competition.

PTI needs to work on interior Sindh. I read the following of why PPP always win theirs

https://www.dawn.com/news/1422238/b...e-ppps-tactics-to-maintain-dominance-in-sindh

I always thought the best strategy was to give the second biggest wadera a PTI ticket in every constituency. However IK said no to the lota's. An alliance with GDA again could be done, but I dont know if IK wants to be dependent on any other party.

30 percent in popular vote. While ppp and pmln combine have 38% on popular vote, yet we have delusional people thinking pti is the most popular

The tweets show that people arent ready for ghulami. For the 1st time I criticised my army. An army my dad served. The army and the mafia can't do a deal against PK

Are PPP and PMLN one party?

PTI is the most popular party in Pakistan by far. They are also the only national party and the way things are going its going to be even more evident come next elections.

What you failed to highlight is the 15% gain in the popular vote for PTI in General elections 2018 compared to the 2013. Similarly, the unholy alliance dropped 11% in the same time frame. With the current events, Imran Khan is more popular than ever and PTI's voter base will only continue to grow

Oh bhai, how is pti the most popular? 2018 elections are based on numbers.

Stop making assumptions all the time and fight blindly on them.

30% is his popularity. If he wants to test his popularity, make his mnas fight by elections.

Funny how you are laughing.

If pti wants to wina a 2/3 than they have to beat the oposition combined.

Having auch a large opposition resulted in you know what yesterday. Little said the better.

The fact that this was the first pm to lose peoples confidence in palistan and has only 30% popular vote shows how little the popularity is

Would opposition be competing next elections on one PDM ticket? Or would each candidate compete on PMLN/PPP/JUIF tickets?

Also is it decided that if PMLN is fielding a candidate in one constituency then no other PDM party would field a candidate from that constituency?

If not then it remains that PTI is the largest single party in Pakistan expected to become even bigger in next election.

Again, assumptions.

We have 2018 factual data.

The best way to get new data is by elections. Pti should resign its mnas and get by elections done on 140 seats

That will be a disaster. There's no chance PTI will win back that number of seats. They surprised many in 2018 due to an emotional campaign, and got a lot of swing voters on their side. That is not happening now, unfortunately. Mass resignation would also mean PTI will deliberately create chaos over mass by-elections in the country which is already suffering from record inflation recently.

Besides, they have also lost backing of key political allies and the military. And this is due to the poor governance model of PTI, and largely because of Imran Khan, again unfortunately.

Exactly. No army to manuever results, no atm to fund them, and best of all no electables.

I actually want them to fa for the by election and they end up losing the seats they already have ...

They will go in by election because of imran khans ego. He is not ready to talk to shebaz shareef.

Imran has to accept that shebaz shareef is his pm :)))

It should be just as difficult for PPP to accept as it is for PTI.

Very sad to see Zardari aligning with these crooks who disrespected his wife for so many years.

I think PPP will be badly dented by this. Remember these guys have to campaign against each other next year but the lasting image will be of Bilawal/Zardari hugging the crooks who violated the image of their mother/wife.

These are 2018 and 2013 numbers. In 2013 it was 15% popular vote in 2018 it was 30%. You do the math there, it's simple enough. The trend is going up and it will go up further.
The way his ministers defended him in Parliament yesterday, mind you in his absence, has given PTI supporters hope that there's leadership in the ranks. Those guys are now mainstream politicians with a mandate that appeals to tge public. They are hard to beat in a fair election.

Elections is what PTI has been asking for all along, however your alliance ran away from that and got government through a shortcut.

Where are the Mass Protests and demonstrations by Pakistani Public in Support of PTI ?

PTI Supporters were predicting that removal of Imran Khan by an illegal NCM will lead to anarchy and countrywide protests by his millions of Supporters in most parts of the countru. But looking around it seems the country is moving along like nothing happened. Situation is calm just like it was days before the NCM like nothing has changed . Where are the millions of Supporters engaging in demonstrations against the Newly formed Government and the Puppet Establishment ?

For PPP this is a long term investment in Bilawal by starting him off with one of the minister's post. Long road ahead but he will actually be Pakistan's future prime minister, 12+ years down the line and will become a force bigger than Noon.

And dare I say it (without being bashed), he will turn into an articulate statesman.

Bilawal can be a statesman thats true becuase he has started young and is one of the feww educated politicians.

But the guy needs to learn his urdu. He can communicate with those urdu skills. His vocabulary is very good, better than a common persons vocabulary. It his speaking stylez dialect and accent.

He also needs to socialize with the mohalla type people and understand that you cant use words like babba as it makes you look childish abit.

Interestingly, if zardari dies, bilawal wont be able to control the party and he would need khuraheed shah or rabbani to take over as party head.

Hina rubbani khar needs to take over for now

P.S The acceptance for those groups will take generations, I don’t see a change in gov impacting that area.

I agree. Hina Rabbani is also articulate and also held the foreign affairs role when she was very young. But lately she's more of a journo/public speaker kinda figure.

PPP is going through a slump now and will do for at least for another term.

If Bilawal become foreign minister, Imran’s narrative is validated. Shabaz atleast has record of administration. What has Bilawal done. Giving someone one of the highest offices just because he has right genes doesn’t fly anymore. That ship has sailed. He has to work and show his mettle first.

If the election was held IK would take close to 50% of the vote. Imported govt wouldn't stand a chance unless they resorted to rigging

Spot on assumptions so far. Less than a thousand people came out on Sunday night right?

What you saw on Sunday night was unprecedented. If you missed that watch out for Peshawar jalsa tonight.

On social media there are tons of messages asking when the next protest/jalsa is. American Pakistanis, British Pakistanis and others too are also asking.

Whatever you think of IK as a prime minister, one thing no one can deny the majority of the country do not want foreign backed regime changes. A lot of people on the fence have moved in the direction of PTI because of this regime change.

Imran is getting more and more popular.

Its quite clear the political establishment has been taken aback with the level of public support.

PPP and MQM have been badly dented by this drama. They will have to exit the coalition months before the next election and through political dirt at PMLN to stand a chance.

I predict some splits in PMLN too. There will be a rift between the kids of SS and NS. You can already see Mariam doesn't look too happy. She has lost everything while her cousins are on top of the world.

Imran has a great chance now. Any success the government has he can portray as reward from the Americans, and any failure he will use it as a weapon to describe their incompetence.

There were other questions in that Gallup Poll that swing more to the side of PTI.

In fact if there was a poll conducted week on week, you will see pro PTI numbers increasing.

You know these polls are paid for. Look with your own eyes. And if these are correct then obviously people will vote for SS. Lol

Everything that goes against Imran Khan is paid for. I love your mental gymnastics of making stupid accusations without any proof whatsoever. If the same survey had shown a result in your favour you'd be the first one posting it here. Not only are you lot liars you're also massive hypocrites.

We'll see soon just how popular they are. Tonight in Peshawar it'll be a huge crowd. I wonder how Karachi and Lahore go.

Sabar karo beta election bhi a raha hai. Zara sakoon se betho thori daer.

All the Ittihad's are not willing to Help SS. Specially MQM who is not even willing to join Cabinet. On the other hand, the NS passport issue is already raising eyebrows. SS is a great administrator but he cannot run a country. PML-N will be exposed badley.

KABUL — Just four days after being legally forced to step down as Pakistan’s prime minister, Imran Khan began laying the groundwork for a political comeback, drawing thousands of supporters to a late-night rally Wednesday in the northwest city of Peshawar.

The event marked the launch of a nationwide campaign of public rallies, which Khan is calling a “freedom struggle” against his foreign and domestic adversaries. While asking his supporters to remain peaceful, he vowed to keep the mass street actions going until the country’s new leaders call for early elections.

Packed in a large field with a huge stage erected at one end, Khan’s supporters waited for hours, milling excitedly in the dark, waving flags and chanting. Finally, just after midnight, he took the stage.

“Pakistan has now become a nation,” Khan declared. “I am thankful to God that I was removed and you all came and gave me such respect.”

In his first public appearance since his ouster, Khan said a “decisive moment” had arrived and the country had to make a choice. “Do we want to be the slaves of the United States, or do we want real freedom?”

Khan has repeatedly accused U.S. officials of colluding with his legislative opponents and issuing threats against his government, and has made U.S. interference a centerpiece of his new campaign.

Khan’s renegade tactics — and the mass resignation of his party’s legislators Tuesday — raised concerns that Pakistan could be plunged into another political crisis, just as its new leaders begin to grapple with the country’s worst economic crisis in decades.

“It appears that he would rather wreck the system than accept the humiliation of being ousted,” columnist Zahid Hussain wrote in Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper Wednesday. By boycotting democratic institutions and taking to the streets, he said, Khan “seeks to dismantle the entire edifice.”

A onetime cricket star turned political reformer, Khan won election in 2018 as a champion of the poor and an enemy of what he called Pakistan’s corrupt, dynastic political elite. But after months of struggling to prop up the foundering economy, and weeks of fighting to remain in power, he was defeated Sunday by a vote of no confidence in the National Assembly.

His failure to make unpopular policy decisions, as inflation climbed steadily and the national currency fell to an unprecedented 185 rupees against the U.S. dollar, cost him public support at a critical moment and gave his opponents critical leverage to remove him from office.

But as news of his ouster spread Sunday night, dozens of pro-Khan street rallies erupted across the country. The size and emotional intensity of the rallies appeared to surpass even Khan’s expectations, and swiftly shifted the political calculus of the moment, even as power was transferred to a new prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif.

A 70-year-old politician and wealthy industrialist, Sharif epitomizes Pakistan’s permanent ruling class. He praised Khan’s legal removal from power as a victory for the constitution and the law, but he quickly sought to bring back his older brother Nawaz Sharif, a three-time prime minister who was jailed on corruption charges in 2019 and now lives in London.

In his speech, Khan charged that the new government is “full of individuals out on bail,” hoping to create a popular movement against Sharif before he consolidates enough power to win elections later this year. Even if he fails, observers said, a sustained display of public enthusiasm could still undercut the new government’s ability to shore up Pakistan’s ailing economy.

Munawar Shah, 55, a laborer in the crowd, said he had never met Khan but admired him for curbing terrorism and championing health care for the poor. The region has long been a stronghold of Khan’s Movement for Justice party.

“Since he became prime minister, we finally have peace in our area after a long hard time,” Shah said. “The health card in my pocket is due to him.” He also said Khan was a “righteous man” who once opened a speech at the United Nations with a Koranic prayer. “He never bowed his head before the world. You see all these people coming out. This shows how they love him.”

Many rallygoers expressed anger at Khan’s abrupt removal from power. Sheraz Ahmad, 49, a provincial education administrator who has supported Khan for years, called his ouster “disgraceful. This was not the way an elected elder should be treated,” Ahmad said.

Like others in the crowd, Ahmad blamed interference from the United States as well as domestic rivals for undermining Khan. “Those who hatched this conspiracy did not expect he would get such huge support, but now they are aware of the consequences,” he said.

Khan first raised allegations of a “foreign conspiracy” only a few weeks ago, but they have resonated powerfully with many Pakistanis. He has labeled the Sharif regime an “imported government,” declaring he possesses a secret diplomatic cable proving that a U.S. official threatened his government, though he has refused to release the cable. He also claims — without evidence — that some of his legislative opponents collaborated in a U.S. plot against him.

These charges have been tersely denied by the State Department, but they have taken off on Pakistani social media in the past week and dominated chants and posters at pro-Khan rallies across the country. A screenshot of Twitter trends Wednesday night showed a four-day total of 4 million tweets in Urdu with a hashtag translating to “imported government unacceptable.”

Many people have also posted comments critical of Pakistan’s military establishment, which initially supported Khan but distanced itself from him as he sought to cling to power. Though the army has often intervened in Pakistani politics, military officials have remained publicly neutral in the current political crisis.

But Khan’s popular momentum and plan to press for new elections have led to a rare division of opinion within the military. On Wednesday, some retired generals praised Khan or acknowledged that he enjoys wide popularity, while criticizing the Sharifs, who have held power repeatedly over the years and have often been viewed as too close to the military.

“There is no doubt that a lot of people have been mobilized by Khan. Whatever people want to say, a fact is a fact,” Naeem Khalid Lodhi, a retired army general, told a TV news interviewer. Lodhi noted that when Khan was elected in 2018, the Sharifs charged that the results had been rigged and demanded new elections. Now, he said, “I think Khan wants an early election, and I think he’s right about that.”

It must sting so hard that people would rather live through extreme hardship than under the governments of your crooks.

There will be many such revelations in coming days.
Yes one of them being all those who attended the jalsa last night were photoshopped or from overseas.

The reality is thousands attended last night to such a scale that PDM combined could never gather. They had mobile phones so expect over the next 48 hours for their pictures and videos to be uploaded on social media. This won’t quieten down its picking up momentum.

What this should tell you all is , people would rather live through financial hardship than under the rule of American installed puppets or crooks.

Purely based upon the posts on this forum, it seems that IK has managed to build a stronger support base for him than when he came to power. I don't know how much of this will hold good esp. if the 2 other major parties decide to fight elections together by dividing the seats amongst themselves so as to consolidate their vote banks. Nevertheless speaking purely from elections point of view, the 2 parties in government will be better off in just delaying the elections for now so as to let the angry PTI supporters calm down over time. From IK perspective the sooner the elections happen, i would assume better it's for him. Afterall one needs money and other resources to win elections and it's difficult to sustain this public suport momentum for too long.

Reminds me of this urban legend:

HANGU: The polling has ended for the by-election in the National Assembly constituency in Hangu, NA-33, today (Sunday) while the counting of votes has started.

The polling began at 8 am with around 4,500 cops deployed in the area to avert any untoward incident and continued uninterrupted till 5pm.

A fierce contest is expected between PTI, JUI-F and ANP for the National Assembly seat in Hangu.

Hangu District Police Officer Ikramullah said during a media talk that the security arrangements had been finalised by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold a peaceful and transparent by-poll.

He said the police, along with the Quick Response Force and Rapid Response Force personnel, would patrol across the constituency during the polling process, while the Frontier Reserve Police would remain on standby at the police lines to cope with any emergency.

Over 0.314 million people are exercising their right to vote and five candidates are contesting in the by-election on NA-33, the seat which fell vacant after the demise of PTI MNA Haji Khayal Zaman in February.

The candidates are Saeed Umar of Awami National Party (ANP), Obaidullah of JUI-F, Nadeem Khan of PTI and Atiq Ahmed and Muhammad Saeed, who are running as independent candidates.

A spokesperson of the ECP said 210 polling stations, including 55 for women only and 91 combined for both men and women, have been set up for the poll.

According to the official, 110 of these polling stations were declared sensitive while 77 had been declared highly sensitive.

Adequate security arrangements have been made around these stations, he said.

Chief election commissioner appealed to voters to exercise their right to vote without any fear, saying that no interference in the polling process will be tolerated and immediate action will be taken against any violation.

Pti won. JUI second place

On Tuesday, two days after Imran Khan had been ousted as Pakistan’s prime minister in a dramatic no-confidence vote, Noor Alam Khan – a politician and former member of Khan’s party – was eating dinner at a restaurant when he was confronted by another diner.

The man began shouting “traitor”, “American agent” and “turncoat” and then lunged over to punch Khan, who had been attempting to ignore him. In the middle of the restaurant, the politician and the angry voter began to brawl, with food and tables going flying.

For Noor Khan, who was among the dozens of members of Imran Khan’s supporters who recently switched sides and voted against him in the no-confidence vote, the incident was the culmination of mounting abuse he has faced in recent weeks from the former prime minister’s supporters.

“I have been harassed and faced death threats since I announced that I would vote against Imran Khan in the no-confidence vote,” he said. “I have received phone calls saying: we will kill you and your children like Benazir Bhutto [former prime minister who was assassinated] because you are an American agent and betrayed prime minister Imran Khan.”

Similar chaos ensued on Saturday at a gathering of the Punjab assembly meant to be discussing the election of a new chief minister , as supporters of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and opposition lawmakers began to aggressively confront each other and the deputy speaker, Sardar Dost Muhammad Mazari, was attacked by members of the treasury benches.

In a tweet after the incident, Khan’s former information minister and close ally Fawad Chaudhry tweeted that Pakistan was “inches away from fully fledged civil unrest”.

“Imran Khan has exercised utmost restraint,” he said. “Very soon even he won’t be able to stop this very angry mob and we’ll see the country plunging into a civil unrest.”

Khan, Pakistan’s premier cricketer turned pious Islamist prime minister, was elected in 2018 on a wave of populist sentiment, speaking out against the west and Pakistan’s powerful political dynasties, who had been shrouded in corruption allegations. But while his charisma and populist rhetoric never failed to pull in the crowds at rallies, he also oversaw a period of huge financial turmoil and massive inflation that devastated the economy.

After losing the support of the powerful military, the opposition moved in with a no-confidence vote, backed by many from Khan’s own coalition who had lost faith in the prime minister. Shehbaz Sharif, the leader of the opposition coalition and brother of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, was elected by the national assembly to succeed him.

But the removal of Khan has in no way led to the demise of the populist politics he fostered while in office. Many fear that the deep polarisation cultivated by Khan could prove deeply destabilising for Pakistan, pushing the country into greater political turmoil that the new prime minister, who is known more for his skills as an administrator than a charismatic leader, might be unable to contain.

In recent days, the inflammatory rallying cry of Khan, who has gone back out on the campaign trail with gusto, has been “ghaddari” – traitors – with anyone opposing him, be it his political parties, the media, activists, intellectuals and the judiciary being tarnished as part of a “foreign conspiracy” to oust him.

Pervez Hoodbhoy, an analyst who has extensively written on Khan, called the former prime minister “a true populist”.

“Khan has polarised Pakistan to such an extreme level,” said Hoodbhoy. “The coming days will be chaotic as his insatiable lust for power makes him truly dangerous for this country.”

Evoking popular anti-western sentiment that he has played on for the past four years in office, Khan has continued to push the narrative that the no-confidence vote which ousted him was a “foreign conspiracy” by the west, citing diplomatic correspondence with the US to prove it.

The US vehemently denied it and no definitive proof of a conspiracy has been shown. In a rare press conference on Thursday, Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar, the spokesperson of the armed forces, dismantled Khan’s narrative and rejected the claim that a diplomatic cable contained evidence of foreign interference.

Iftikhar, referring to the diplomatic communication, said: “Is there any word such as conspiracy used in it? I think not.”

He also clarified that the US never asked for army bases in Pakistan, something Imran khan used as “evidence” of why the US wanted him to be ousted. Yet the stance of the military establishment, which wields huge power in the country, has also made its members targets of a social media campaign led by Khan’s supporters, who see the army as having played a role in the prime minister’s fall from power.

Tens of thousands of tweets have been sent in recent days criticising the army. On Wednesday, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested 12 social media activists who reportedly ran these campaigns, which Iftikhar called “illegal, immoral and against national interest”.

On the streets of cities and towns across Pakistan, the narrative that Khan was victim to a western conspiracy has been powerful and pervasive, and thousands have continued to come out in protest in support of him.

Addressing a huge crowd on Wednesday, Khan said that a decisive moment had arrived, and the nation needed to choose if it wanted “slavery or liberty” from the US. Khan accused the opposition leaders of being an “imported government” who are “slaves of the US” and said he and his supporters would be on the streets until fresh elections were announced.

Muhammad Banaras, 35, a resident in Islamabad, said Khan was the first prime minister to “think about the poor and challenge the corrupt”.

“Khan has talked about Islam, the rights of Kashmiris and against corruption. The west and the US are against him, they don’t want Pakistan to be a great nation. We should support Khan in this fight,” said Banaras.

Reema Omer, a lawyer who was victim to a lengthy online trolling campaign by Khan’s supporters, said Khan was creating a wave of public anger that could prove difficult to control.

“This narrative is based on no evidence whatsoever and has repeatedly been debunked,” said Omer. “However, Imran Khan is following Goebbels’ playbook, using ‘convenient lies’ that evoke strong emotions and spew hatred and contempt, not caring about how dangerous the effects can be for society.”

With Khan expected to contest the next general election, which is likely to be called before the end of the year, many are predicting a volatile time ahead for Pakistan. “I wasn’t dangerous when I was in government,” said Khan on Wednesday, addressing a rally. “But I will be now.”

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Imran Khan will address the nation live on social media today.

PTI’s official social media team has been instructed to make preparations for the party chairman’s address.

Earlier, party leaders held an important meeting of the political committee in which overall political situation was discussed.
The participants were briefed on the preparations for the upcoming public rally to be held on April 21 at Minar-e-Pakistan.
Special instructions have been given to officials to reach the venue on time with their caravans.

On the occasion, ex-PM Imran said the country had no choice but to give the people a chance for their future through transparent elections.

“People protect the sovereignty and democracy of a country,” he said. “If change of government is accepted through conspiracy, no future head of government will dare to face external pressure.”

Imran maintained that the whole nation is united and mobilised for its freedom and sovereignty.

Sources said the PTI chief will announce a strategy on the historic site of Minar-e-Pakistan.
