best innings of the year from me, outstanding. Let's hope he starts converting his 50's into 100's consistently.

After the Aus series, I'd say he's ahead. In tests, Pujara is at least the equal of Root.
It's really a big two between Smith and Kohli tbh.Scored 3 hundreds in last 22 tests, in test cricket there is no big 4.
Wasn't he supposed to be the best batsman in the world the moment he scored 124 in Sri Lanka?
And didn't Kane Williamson snatch that title from him immediately and became the best batsman in the world when he scored that century against Pakistan in the U.A.E.?
The problem is they're not as consistent as the other two, they have one good performance and follow up with little after that. They don't have that period where it feels like they're going to score a century every second innings like Smith and Kohli. They proved that they belong to fab four with those performance. They didn't became the best in the world though IMO.
The current batting averages: -
Smith: - 61(64 tests)
Kohli: - 53(77 tests)
Kane: - 51(70 tests)
Pujara:- 51(68 tests)
Root: - 49(78 tests)
Average under 50 now.
That's a non-issue if he scores some tons when playing away.
Has only scored 4 of those in his entire career. Versus Kohli's 14. Smith's 10. Williamson's 9.

Root is class. Going through a rough phase like Kohli did back in 2014-15.
Another double failure for Root, that test average keeps coming down.
Both of his dismissals this match were to top deliveries.
Root's peak is over? Too bad even at his peak he didn't produce big 100s.
His peak ended in mid 2017. Has scored only 2 centuries in last 35 innings.
Lots of time for him to have another peak.
Desperately needs some test class openers and number three though.
Root is a tremendous batsman. He is simply going through a rough patch - I expect him to have a big World Cup and Ashes. He is the youngest of all the elite batsmen in the world and his peak is yet to come.
In spite of his recent slump, I still consider him the second best all-round batsman of this generation.
I know its a completely different format but Root plays so well in ODI's with no pressure of captaining the team. I think if England could get the captaincy off him that would help his form. Some players can cope with the demands of captaincy but i don't think Root is one of them. England need the prolific scoring Root back. He can't even score fifties anymore. The only problem is that there are no other real captaincy options. Butler is one but his place is not really secure.
The problem is every England captain bar none starts to struggle with the captaincy a year or two into it. If it isn't Root, you will merely be anointing another poor bloke to be the next champion of decline.
Root only has 4 centuries away from home. Any Asian batsman would be heavily criticized if he had such htb numbers.
I still believe in terms of natural talent Root is probably in the same league with Kohli but the severe lack of fight and patience in him is what dragging him down.
Back to back dead rubber tons now.
Well, at least he is back in form.
Not convinced by this hundred in a dead rubber.
What's the title of the thread?Another away hundred for Root the MOOAT.
MOTCOAT doesn’t rhyme with Root thoughWhat's the title of the thread?
