What's new

Leeds United | 2022/23 and 2023/24 Seasons

Brilliant performance from Leeds today.

3-0 versus Chelsea and it could have been more.

Leeds manager Jesse Marsch, speaking to BBC Sport: "I have a lot of emotion. Obviously we know it was an important win. I am just really happy for our team. They work really hard angry to adapt in every way I ask them to do. They adapt to the environment that we have created. Validation in moments like this are really important for progress. That is what we have to understand - it is not just a win but a really good performance against a really good team and that the potential is there. We have to maximise that every day.

"We had to adjust because they started with a build-up of three. We thought they would maybe be in a four like against Tottenham. We did adjust and built that into the match plan. We had to be variable with out build-up and some of the things we were trying to do. The response to some adjustments during the game and at half-time was really good. Guys off the bench came in and gave really good performances. These games require best performances possible and we got that from individuals and the team."

It was a delight to watch the match yesterday. Adams was a beast and Aaronson is pure class. Rodrigo continuing his good form. One of the best performances by Leeds I have witnessed. Just need to carry the momentum forward.

Pity KP left, he will struggle to make the final eleven of City and eventually be dropped by the national squad as well.

Sort of struggling to care about the guy already… Not our problem.

<b>Leeds United 3-1 Barnsley FC</b>

Leeds United moved into the third round of the Carabao Cup by winning a Yorkshire derby against League One side Barnsley at a packed Elland Road.

The hosts looked in control when Luis Sinisterra scored from 25 yards and Mateusz Klich converted a penalty.

But Barnsley pulled one back through Mads Andersen's diving header and then missed a spot-kick of their own as Callum Styles could only hit the post.

Klich scored again with a curling shot from 15 yards to seal Leeds' win.

Jesse Marsch's team have been drawn away to fellow Premier League side Wolves in the next round with the tie to be played in the week commencing 7 November.

Leeds made nine changes to their starting line-up from the 11 that began the 3-0 home win over Chelsea on Sunday, although they still took the lead after 20 minutes.

Colombia winger Sinisterra, making his first start for the club since a £21m summer move from Feyenoord, opened his account in style with a brilliantly-struck effort from outside the penalty area.

Klich doubled Leeds' advantage 12 minutes later by scoring the penalty after the impressive Sinisterra had been fouled by Barnsley's Conor McCarthy.

However, the Tykes, 16th in League One and who had won 1-0 away from home at Championship Middlesbrough in the first round, fought back.

Andersen produced a low diving header when unmarked following Josh Benson's free-kick and the visitors had a chance to level when Styles was fouled by Adam Forshaw but Styles missed the resulting penalty.

However, the home side restored their two-goal advantage in the 57th minute as Sinisterra's cross was not cleared and Klich curled the ball past goalkeeper Jack Walton.

LEEDS UNITED COMPLETE DEADLINE DAY DEAL FOR WILFRIED GNONTO

Leeds United are pleased to confirm the transfer deadline day signing of Italian international Wilfried Gnonto.

The forward joins the Whites from Swiss Super League champions FC Zurich, for an undisclosed fee.

He has penned a five-year deal at Elland Road, running until the summer of 2027.

A product of Inter Milan’s Academy, Gnonto spent eight years with the San Siro outfit before moving to Zurich in 2020.

He made 26 appearances during the 2020/21 campaign, before helping to fire Zurich to a first Swiss Super League title in 13 years last season, hitting 10 goals and providing five assists.

The 18-year-old’s performances did not go unnoticed by Italy manager Roberto Mancini, who handed him his first cap against Germany in the UEFA Nations League in June 2022.

He then went on to score his first goal for his country in the reverse fixture against Germany, becoming Italy’s youngest goal-scorer ever in the process, breaking a record which had stood since 1958.

Gnonto arrives at Elland Road having made 74 appearances in all competitions for Zurich, along with four caps for Italy.

He becomes the club’s ninth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Brenden Aaronson, Tyler Adams, Darko Gyabi, Rasmus Kristensen, Sonny Perkins, Joel Robles, Marc Roca and Luis Sinisterra.

Jesse Marsch got sent off! I’ve never seen that before. He has a bit to learn about not antagonising referees.

Jesse Marsch got sent off! I’ve never seen that before. He has a bit to learn about not antagonising referees.

That was not good for Leeds. But two mangers were shown red card a few weeks ago as well, but for other reasons after the match.

The VAR is not applied fairly by the refrees and Jesse was very upset beacaue of that;

1) Brentford sreamed for penalty and VAR was instanty on the case and awarded them penalty.

2) Summerville deserved penalty, everyone could see that, but the ref and VAR comeplety ignored that.

3) At 3-2, Brentford scored a 4th but refrees saw it as offside, and when Brentfor players started complaining the VAR came into play again and awarded Brentfor the goal.

I don't mind the final decisions of VAR, but as mentioned it's not beeing applied consistently and fairly.

Coming back to the match, Llorente should be kicked out of the team asap, he is a liability and I get nervous everytime ball comes near him.

Leeds did not play badly and had plenty of chances to score. Bamford needs 20 chances to score a couple. Needed a proven striker this window, but let's hope Gnonto can help us.

Terrible result at the weekend, albeit less so the performance which at least going forward was quite good.

VAR might have had a poor weekend and affected Leeds among other teams, but our defending was embarrassingly bad and we aren’t going to win away from home all season if that facet of our play doesn’t improve. The 3rd and 5th Brentford goals were absolute gimmes. Marsch should start by dropping Llorente, a lovely chap who has worked his socks off for us at centre half but on the ball has become a liability.

Back to Elland Road on Monday night & we need a win against Forest to ensure that our good start to the season is not squandered.

<b>Papa John's Trophy: Joe Gelhardt scores twice in Leeds U21s' win at Tranmere</b>

Joe Gelhardt scored twice as Leeds United Under-21s started their Papa John's Trophy campaign by winning an eight-goal thriller at Tranmere.

Goals from Paul Lewis and Rhys Hughes saw the League Two side race into a two-goal lead.

But Leeds turned the game on its head with three goals in five minutes as Sonny Perkins pulled one back before Gelhardt, who has made five Premier League appearances this season, scored twice in three minutes.

Neill Byrne levelled in first-half stoppage time to make it 3-3 at the break before Leeds eased in front with goals from Mateo Fernandez and Cody Drameh.

Leeds had Sam Greenwood sent off with 21 minutes left but the Premier League side's youngsters held on for a 5-3 victory.

Leeds 0-1 Arsenal… argh.

Really good display from Leeds, deserved something from the game.

Heartening for Leeds fans to see this performance.

Arsenal are learning how to win ugly.

Bad loss tonight versus Leicester.

Could be a relegation dogfight this season.

Looking bad for Marsch, many Leeds fans online calling for his head.

Looking bad for Marsch, many Leeds fans online calling for his head.

To call for his head already is stupid, he is trying everything, but the players are completey messing it up. We create so many chances but are not able to convert them, whereas the opposition team get a a couple of chances and they are very effective. Badly need a striker and our defenders are simply not good enough for PL, not a single one of them.

Again, it will be a battle of survival. Yesterday I watched the first 30 minutes and then just turned off the TV and went to bed, not regretting this morning, feeling fresh :)

That was a truly pathetic performance from Leeds.

Another relegation battle awaits us.

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch faces an uncertain future after Fulham came from behind to claim a win at Elland Road (2-3) that leaves the Whites in in the Premier League bottom three and without a win in eight games.

Second-half goals from Bobby Decordova-Reid and Willian sealed the game for the Cottagers - the former steering a header before the latter scored from close range to provoke mutiny among the home crowd.

The last 10 minutes were played out to the sound of chants against Marsch and the club's board with the final whistle greeted by boos from around the ground.

Looking to boost their lowly league position and the standing of their beleaguered boss, the home side had led through Rodrigo's header in the 20th minute, raising the prospect of a first win since August.

But familiar defensive failings again undid them as they allowed Aleksandar Mitrovic an unchallenged close-range header from a corner just six minutes later.

In what is becoming a familiar story, the Whites looked huffed and puffed in attack but looked vulnerable all afternoon.

It took a superb goal-line block from Marc Roca to stop Harrison Reed scoring the opener and a fine save from Illan Meslier to stop Andreas Pereira making it 2-1 before the break.

Decordova-Reid and Willian took their chances when they came to complete the turnaround and ensure that not even Crysencio Summerville's late goal could alter the result.

It gives this enterprising and confident Fulham side a second successive win following Thursday's 3-0 win over Aston Villa and leaves Marsch to an uncertain fate.

I was at the game today. An enjoyable experience at Elland Road as ever, but another loss for Leeds. The final scoreline suggests that the game was close, but it wasn’t really. Fulham had lots of clear chances and should have scored more. They fully deserved to win and Leeds were pretty poor on the whole. Think Marsch is really struggling to hang onto his Head Coach role now.

What a bad day for me as a sports-fan. First Pakistan lost to India in a close match and I had not even come over that before Leeds was defeated by Fulham. Really tough day :(

Anyways hope both teams can bounce back :)

<b>Liverpool 1-2 Leeds United</b>

Crysencio Summerville scored a dramatic late winner as Leeds stunned Liverpool to damage the Reds' top-four hopes and move out of the Premier League relegation zone.

The hosts had lost to bottom-of-the-table Nottingham Forest in their last league outing but were hoping to build on their dominant 3-0 win at Ajax in the Champions League in midweek.

However, they made the worst possible start against a Leeds side who started the day in the bottom three when a poor back pass by Joe Gomez was pounced on by Rodrigo, who poked into an empty net.

Liverpool responded well and equalised soon after when Mohamed Salah volleyed in from Andy Robertson's cross.

But Leeds, belying their lowly position in the table, showed great hunger and desire in response to that equaliser and hit the woodwork through Brenden Aaronson.

Illan Meslier made great saves to deny Darwin Nunez one-on-one in the second half, before the Leeds goalkeeper also kept out a Roberto Firmino header.

And, in the final minute of normal time, Summerville picked up the ball from Patrick Bamford before firing across Alisson to send the away support wild.

The defeat - Liverpool's second in a row in the Premier League - means they are ninth and eight points off the top four, while Leeds move up to 15th.

Congrats IAJ James

Thanks, mate. That was really fantastic to watch. We have played so well in many games, but still lost, so it was great to take all the 3 points, especially at Anfield.

Ace win James. Good to see the Elland Road boys do well over the Pennines.

<b>Leeds 'stop the bleeding' with stunning Liverpool win to ease relegation fears</b>

Things can change very quickly in football.

Just a couple of days ago, Leeds boss Jesse Marsch was complaining about how sick he was of losing after his side had dropped into the relegation zone following four successive defeats.

However, just hours on from making that comment he was celebrating arguably one of the most famous wins of his career as Leeds claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory at Anfield to move out of the bottom three.

"It was necessary to stop the bleeding," said Marsch afterwards. "The guys are happy, there is music in the dressing room. We have to use this.

"Last week, against Fulham we were more waiting to lose than pushing to win and I think the best part was you saw a real resolve at 1-1 in this game.

"[Goalkeeper] Illan Meslier needed to make some big saves but the mentality to stay in the match and see if we could find a way to get three points was really strong."

After guiding Leeds to Premier League survival on the last day of last season, Marsch was well backed in the summer to put together a side capable of pushing on.

They started the campaign brightly with two wins in their first three games - including a victory against Chelsea - but the drop in form after that has been alarming.

The recent run of defeats meant the pressure had been mounting on Marsch but, in fairness, Leeds have not always got the results their performances have warranted.

Before the trip to Anfield they ranked second for expected goals away from home and first for the most tackles, and all that came together on Saturday night as they took their chances as well as rarely letting a Liverpool player in possession have time on the ball.

"I am just happy for our team," Marsch said. "I believe in them. I have told them that often. I have challenged them to get better, to stay strong and unified and they have done that.

"If you are a real leader the focus is on your people and this was an important time for our people.

"We played one of the best teams in the world. To come away with three points is a big moment for all us."

While pressure may have been mounting externally, Marsch is adamant he never lost the belief of his players.

Leeds have had injuries to key players to contend with, meaning the American coach has had to put his faith in young players this season.

But those who have come in - including match-winner Crysencio Summerville - have repaid their manager's faith in abundance.

"We have a really good young core," Marsch added. "There is a group of 18-21 that is really strong, especially in attacking positions.

"The balance in our group is great. We should have never been in this situation. We have been playing well just not getting points.

"This is the best present I can get from anything," added Summerville, whose goal came a day before his 21st birthday. "Words can't describe my feelings right now.

"We have to believe that in every game it can happen. This is an early birthday present so I'm happy."

The key now for Leeds is to ensure this is not a one-off, but that is easier said than done with third-placed Tottenham and leaders Manchester City two of their next three opponents in the Premier League.

They will likely look to approach those games as they had this one, but what - if anything - had changed in the build-up to this fixture?

"I am not superstitious at all, but I changed everything this week and now I can't recall what worked for next week!" Marsch added.

If the Leeds boss can pin down exactly what was done differently to help engineer this win against Liverpool, then it won't be long before they are looking up the table, rather than down.

What a roller coaster of a game. 1-0 to 1-3 to 4-3.

I could only watch the first 15 minutes, but I will take the 3 points and well done to Jesse Marsh for giving the youngsters confidience. Summerville is turning out to be very good.

Leeds United fought back from 3-1 down to beat Bournemouth in a remarkable game played out in an electric atmosphere at Elland Road.

Leeds were looking to build on last week's victory at Liverpool and they got off to the perfect start when Rodrigo scored from the penalty spot after Marcos Senesi brought down Crysencio Summerville after just 51 seconds.

But their dream start quickly turned sour as Bournemouth equalised from their first serious attack through Marcus Tavernier's volley before Philip Billing lashed past Illan Meslier to give the Cherries the lead.

In a breathless encounter, Dominic Solanke made it 3-1 early in the second half with a delicious finish, only for Leeds, who were booed off the pitch by their own fans at half-time, to hit back with two goals in eight minutes.

Twenty-year-old substitute Sam Greenwood lifted spirits with a spectacular finish from 20 yards before captain Liam Cooper made it 3-3 with a powerful header from a corner.

The winner, in a game dripping with entertainment, came from Summerville, with the 21-year-old keeping his composure to beat Mark Travers following a great pass by substitute Wilfried Gnonto for his third goal in as many games.

A season-changing win?

This was, quite simply, an incredible match and the atmosphere at full-time could not have been more different to the one at half-time when boos rung from all four sides of the ground following a dismal first 45-minute showing by Leeds.

Jesse Marsch celebrated on the pitch with his players as fireworks lit up the night sky after what the Leeds boss will hope is a season-changing result.

The win at Liverpool helped create some breathing space for Marsch after a poor run of form - but the goodwill did not last and supporters made their feelings known as they trailed at the break.

Yet after Solanke made it 3-1, the home side scored three times in a remarkable spell which completely transformed the mood at Elland Road and lifted the Whites up to 12th in the table.

To eradicate mistakes, Marsch still has his work cut out but the character and determination of his players cannot be questioned.

Tottenham meet Leeds next in the top flight on 12 November and Marsch's side can travel to London for their final game before the break for the World Cup with spirits high.

Just back from Elland Road. What an incredible comeback win from LEEDS and a mindblowing crazy atmosphere! Fireworks, goals and limbs everywhere. A matchday experience I will never forget. There’s nothing quite like football.

<b>Leeds United director Victor Orta releases statement on Elland Road incident and reveals abuse</b>

<I>Leeds United director of football Victor Orta has apologised for an interaction with supporters at full-time of the Whites’ 4-3 Elland Road win over Bournemouth but says it came after significant abuse.</I>

The Spaniard was filmed chanting ‘sack the board’ at fans in the West Stand below the directors’ box, which has prompted anger online and a vow from the Leeds United Supporters Trust to take up the incident with the club.

In a statement given to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Orta apologised for his role but revealed he has been on the receiving end of abusive phone calls after his number was distributed.

"I don’t want to make excuses, but in the end I am human. The past few months have been very difficult for everyone at the club. I have been subjected to a lot of abuse in person, in writing and via phone calls, after my number was deliberately given out last month.”

Orta, whose displays of passion in the directors box have previously found favour among Leeds supporters and been the subject of a running joke in CEO Angus Kinnear’s matchday programme notes, also reiterated his appreciation for the club’s supporters and the impact they have made in games.

“I love and respect Leeds United fans,” he said.

"The atmosphere at Elland Road and across the country at every game is incomparable and has helped us to get over the line on many occasions, I thank the fan base for that. I will be sure to try to keep my emotions in check in future.”

Jesse Marsch and the Leeds players were the subject of boos at half-time and in the second half against Bournemouth with the score at 3-1, but goals from Sam Greenwood, Liam Cooper and Crysencio Summerville turned the fixture on its head completely and handed the Whites a second successive victory.

An eight-game winless streak prior to the famous 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield had heaped pressure on Marsch and the club’s decision makers, but the board stood firm behind the American and made it clear there was no appetite for a managerial change.

The wins over Liverpool and Bournemouth have pushed Leeds up to 12th in the Premier League table ahead of a midweek meeting with Wolves in the Carabao Cup and next weekend’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur, which will be the last competitive action ahead of the World Cup break.

Marsch will then have a mini pre-season of sorts, with the club expected to take part in a number of friendlies and travel to Europe for a training camp.

Leeds United have signed Austria defender Max Wober from Red Bull Salzburg on a four-and-a-half-year deal, for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old played under Whites coach Jesse Marsch at Salzburg where he made 125 appearances.

Wober, who can operate at both centre-back and left-back, becomes the Elland Road club's first signing of the January transfer window.

He could make his debut in Sunday's FA Cup round three tie at Cardiff City.

Wober became the Austrian Bundesliga's most expensive signing in August 2019 when he completed a 10.5m euros move from Ajax to Salzburg.

During the past three-and-a-half years at the Red Bull Arena, Wober has won the Austrian League and Cup double three times in a row.

Leeds still ticking over in the table. A good draw against West Ham. But could have won it at the end with some big chances and feels like a couple of points missed.

Cardify City 2-2 Leeds United

Leeds United dramatically escaped another shock FA Cup third-round defeat at Cardiff City as Sonny Perkins came on to score an added-time equaliser.

Cardiff, 20th in the Championship and the league's lowest scorers, struck twice in seven first-half minutes with goals by Jaden Philogene and Sheyi Ojo.

Booed off at half-time, Leeds replied well as substitute Rodrigo headed in.

Cardiff's Joel Bagan was sent off for handball but Rodrigo saw his resultant penalty saved by Jak Alnwick.

Then just as the home side looked like holding on for another famous victory over Leeds - 21 years after doing so at the same stage over the then-Premier League leaders - Perkins scored from close range to break Cardiff's late resistance.

It was a cruel end to the game for Cardiff, who looked set for a first victory in eight games which would have offered blessed respite from their league struggles.

<b>Leeds are close to signing Hoffenheim forward Georginio Rutter in a club-record £35.3m deal, according to Sky Sports in Germany.</b>

Talks are at an advanced stage for the 20-year-old with a medical expected in the next 48 hours.

A deal for the France U21 international would be worth up to €40m (£35.3m), surpassing the club's current transfer record fee of £27m paid for Rodrigo from Valencia in August 2020.

His potential arrival would be the second signing of the January window for Leeds after they brought in Austrian defender Max Wober from Red Bull Salzburg for a fee in the region of £11m.

Rutter has scored twice in 17 games in all competitions this season for Hoffenheim and has an overall record of 11 goals in 64 appearances for the Bundesliga side.

Leeds United's winless run in the Premier League extended to six games as they were held to a frustrating draw by Brentford.

Jesse Marsch's side had the better chances and forced Brentford goalkeeper David Raya into several good saves at Elland Road.

Teenager Wilfried Gnonto, fresh from his double in the FA Cup win over Cardiff on Wednesday, had the best opening but his effort was kept out by Raya.

Brentford failed to produce a shot on target but kept their discipline in defence to keep Leeds out and extend their unbeaten record to eight successive games.

The point lifts Leeds to 15th place, a point above the relegation zone, while Brentford move up to eighth.

Jack Harrison scored a stunning 25-yard drive as Leeds United progressed into the FA Cup fifth round for the first time since 2016 at the expense of League One Accrington Stanley.

Harrison, who has been linked with a £20m move to Leicester City, fired left-footed into the bottom-right corner after Patrick Bamford's lay-off to break the deadlock halfway through the first half.

Leeds continued to press in a lively first half that saw 18 shots, with Luis Sinisterra having a curling effort tipped on to the post.

They got the second goal their excellent forward play deserved when Junior Firpo linked up brilliantly with Bamford, with the striker's dragged reverse pass allowing the left-back to slot home for his first Leeds goal.

Sinisterra then sealed Leeds' comfortable passage when he opened his body and guided home Harrison's cut-back from the penalty spot.

Accrington started brightly and eventually got their reward when 18-year-old substitute Leslie Adekoya scored his first senior goal with a clever dink over Illan Meslier, 38 seconds after coming off the bench.

Jesse Marsch's Leeds side have gone six Premier League games without victory but the FA Cup is providing solace and could add confidence that boosts their survival fight.

Marsch told BBC Sport he was most pleased with Leeds' mentality, adding: "We always have a group that are ready to work and run. The key is just that we perform clearly tactically and we get more towards the team we want to be and gather more and more results.

"This tournament will give us confidence. We know we have some tough games coming up in the Premier League but the group is feeling better and better about the progress."

Yes, that could the end-result. We started of very well todayl, but just can not find the way to the net. Forest had just one good chance and they scored. Seems like only a matter of time before Jesse is fired.

Just sacked their manager Jesse Marsch.

Clubs going for the manager bounce bandwagon before its too late in the season.

Leeds manager Jesse Marsch has been sacked after less than a year in charge.

Leeds lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on Sunday, their seventh Premier League game without a win.

They are 17th in the table - above the relegation zone only on goal difference - and last won in the league on 5 November.

Leeds finished 17th last season after American Marsch succeeded Marcelo Bielsa in February.

A club statement read: "We would like to thank Jesse and his backroom staff for their efforts and wish them well for the future.

"The process of appointing a new head coach is under way and we will continue to keep supporters up to date throughout the coming days."

Coaches Rene Maric, Cameron Toshack and Pierre Barrieu have also been sacked.

Leeds play Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday and again at Elland Road on Sunday.

Marsch's side won only four of their 20 league matches this season, with six draws and 10 defeats.

Defeat by Nottingham Forest in his final match in charge left him with a 25% win-rate after 32 Premier League games as Leeds boss.

A former coach of RB Leipzig, New York Red Bulls and Red Bull Salzburg, he took over with Leeds 16th in the table.

They avoided relegation to the Championship thanks to a 2-1 win at Brentford on the final day of last season.

Leeds United are on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Jesse Marsch less than 12 months after his appointment.

Marsch departs after a run of just two wins in the Premier League since August, with Sunday's 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest leaving them outside the relegation zone on goal difference.

A number of names have been linked and here BBC Sport takes a look at some of the potential candidates to take charge.

Rafael Benitez

Age: 62 Nationality: Spanish Current club: Unattached

One of the most experienced managers in the game, Benitez is available after leaving Everton a year ago.

The Spaniard is well versed with the Premier League, famously winning the 2005 Champions League with Liverpool, the 2013 Europa League during an interim spell at Chelsea and a popular spell on Tyneside when he guided Newcastle to promotion from the Championship.

He also has stints at some of Europe's major clubs on his CV including Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Napoli and Valencia.

Marcelo Bielsa
Age: 67 Nationality: Argentine Current club: Unattached

The man Jesse Marsch replaced as head coach last year. Known to be keen to get back into management after being interviewed for the Everton job recently.

Bielsa got Leeds promoted to the Premier League and then kept them up but was sacked as they struggled last season.

Despite that, it seems many fans would welcome him back. He would know most of the squad but would he want to come back so soon?

Carlos Corberan
Age: 39 Nationality: Spanish Current club: West Bromwich Albion

The Spaniard was a coach under Bielsa before departing in 2020 to take over at Championship side Huddersfield.

In his second season at the Terriers he took them to within a game of returning to the Premier League but lost out to Nottingham Forest in the play-off final at Wembley.

Corberan left to then take over Greek giants Olympiacos but was sacked after just 11 games. He returned to England to take charge of West Brom and has led them from the relegation zone to fighting for a place in the play-offs.

Steven Gerrard
Age: 42 Nationality: English Current club: Unattached

Former England captain Gerrard is out of work after being sacked as Aston Villa manager earlier this season, with the side teetering above the relegation zone.

He lasted just 11 months at Villa Park, winning 13 of 40 games, and his time came to an end when supporters sang anti-Gerrard chants in his final match.

Before that, Gerrard's first managerial job game in Scotland with Rangers, guiding them to a first top-flight league title since 2011 with an unbeaten campaign and breaking Celtic's stranglehold on the trophy.

Ralph Hasenhuttl
Age: 55 Nationality: Austrian Current club: Unattached

The Austrian became Southampton manager in December 2018 and guided them out of the Premier League relegation zone and to safety.

In his second season he led them to 11th and a points total of 52 - the Saints' highest since 2015-16.

His time at the club did also feature some heavy defeats, with 9-0 losses to Leicester and Manchester United, and he was dismissed in November last year with Southampton in the relegation zone, where they remain.

Prior to his time at Southampton he led RB Leipzig to a second-placed finish in the Bundesliga.

Kjetil Knutsen
Age: 54 Nationality: Norwegian Current club: FK Bodo/Glimt

Knutsen has been linked with a number of jobs in England in recent months after impressing with his work at Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, where he has been manager since 2017.

He quickly established them as a dominant force domestically and led them to their first league title in 2020. A successful defence followed while his standout result in Europe saw him oversee a 6-1 win against Jose Mourinho's Roma in the Europa League two years ago.

Mauricio Pochettino
Age: 50 Nationality: Argentine Current club: Unattached

Pochettino is another manager familiar with the English top flight, leading Southampton to an eighth-placed finish in his first full season in charge.

A move to Tottenham followed where he came agonisingly close to ending the north London side's long wait for silverware, finishing as runners-up in the 2016-17 title race and beaten by Liverpool in the Champions League final two years later.

Pochettino was dismissed just months later and he went on to manage Ligue 1 giants Paris St-Germain, claiming the league title and cup in France before leaving last summer.

Ange Postecoglu
Age: 57: Nationality: Greek-Australian Current club: Celtic

Postecoglou led Celtic to a league and cup double in 2021-22 and has them on course for more silverware as they sit top of the Scottish Premiership, nine points clear of Rangers.

Previously he was in charge of Australia and led the national team to AFC Asian Cup title in 2015.

Postecoglou has been linked with a number of Premier League jobs this season but has previously stated his intention to see things through at Celtic.

Nuno Espirito Santo
Age: 49 Nationality: Portuguese Current club: Al-Ittihad

Santo has previously managed at Valencia and Porto and had a successful four-year spell at Wolves, guiding the club to promotion from the Championship in his first full season.

He then led the club to two seventh-placed finishes, Wolves' highest placings in the Premier League, qualifying for Europe for the first time since the 1980-81 season.

Wolves reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League in 2020 but he left by mutual consent at the end of the following campaign.

An ill-fated 17-game spell at Tottenham followed, before being appointed as manager of Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad last July.

Thomas Tuchel
Age: 49 Nationality: German Current club: Unattached

It would feel like an ambitious move by Leeds but the German has been out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea back in September.

Tuchel led Chelsea to Champions League success in 2020-21 and won an impressive 60 of his 100 games in charge of the club, losing just 16.

Prior to his time in London, he managed Paris St-Germain and Borussia Dortmund where he boasted impressive win percentages of 75% and 63% respectively.

Marsch had to go.

He looked out of his depth in the job.

Tough job for anyone coming in as the squad looks terribly weak.

Out of those names, would be real coup to get either Pochettino or Tuchel. Not convinced by any of the others on that list.

Bielsa again really?! He was sacked prior to Marsch. It really is swings and merry go rounds when it comes to PL managers.

I'd be surprised if Tuchel or Pochettino will end up at Leeds.

Anything is possible in football but I don't think either will fancy the job at Elland Road.

Leeds: Patrick Bamford a 'joke' for criticising Jesse Marsch tactics - Chris Sutton

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford is a "joke" for criticising Jesse Marsch's tactics in the defeat at Nottingham Forest, says ex-forward Chris Sutton.

Bamford said Sunday's 1-0 loss was "difficult" because Forest's centre-backs "just had me to concentrate on".

Marsch was sacked on Monday after seven Premier League games without a win.

"Keep it in the confines of the dressing room if that's the way you feel," Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club.

"He's unburdening himself of any responsibility. I don't like that.

"He's not daft - he knows the implications that it will have. It will be taken as a criticism of the manager and his tactics.

"He's a joke for bringing that into the public domain."

Bamford said in his post-match interview: "We needed more runners running past me to drag [Forest's centre-backs] out of position and create a bit more space.

"The whole game was literally two v one, which made it difficult, and unfortunately I couldn't find the answers to solve that."

Leeds are 17th in the table - above the relegation zone only on goal difference - and last won in the league on 5 November.

They play Manchester United twice this week before facing fellow strugglers Everton and Southampton.

Michael Skubala, one of Leeds' caretaker managers while a permanent replacement for Marsch is found, said Bamford's comments had "come from the heart".

"I think he was just being honest about how he was playing the game," said Skubala. "I think it just came from the heart."

Following Sutton's comments on the show, BBC Radio Leeds' Adam Pope said: "It was a criticism, I agree, but I don't think it was to 'poke the bear' as much as you're maybe suggesting.

"Players are asked very quickly after games to respond."

New York Times journalist Rory Smith added: "It could equally be a criticism of his team-mates. It's an honest thing to say - it's an assessment - and it's maybe not quite got that ulterior motive that you're reading into it."

Sutton, who won the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers in 1995 and made one appearance for England, responded by saying: "It's open to interpretation. He (Bamford) doesn't strike me as somebody who wouldn't understand where comments like this would lead.

"He's criticising the manager, the tactics. Things like this snowball. It's great he's honest - but it's only going to cause trouble."

I think Correban the ex-leeds number 2 under Bielsea, will be favourite to take over.

He did a great job at Huddersfield and nearly got them promoted, so I think Leeds will go down that route.

Rayo Vallecano boss Andoni Iraola is a leading contender to take over as Leeds manager

Leeds’ chairman has hinted that fans will need to be patient in the club’s bid to replace manager Jesse Marsch.

This comes just one day after he hinted supporters that the arrival of a new boss was imminent, after he replied to a fan’s question on their next move on Twitter.

On Tuesday evening – just one day after the club had revealed Marsch of his duties – chairman Andrea Radrizanni took to the social media platform to give an update on their search for a new boss.

Replying to a fan who had tweeted him asking for an update, Radrizanni said: “We are on it ….hopefully white smoke by tonight or [tomorrow] morning.”

But less than 24 hours later, Radrizanni had changed his tune.

When he was questioned why the appointment wasn’t announced during the window he’d stated on Tuesday, he replied: “Not yet.. need more time. [Let’s] support the lads now. Keep you posted.”

Leeds had already been dealt a blow in their search for a new manager after West Brom offered the Yorkshire side’s target Carlos Corberan a new contract on the same day rumours emerged about him being linked with the job.

Now, talkSPORT understands the Yorkshire club are now struggling to convince their next top candidate – Rayo Vallecano’s Andoni Iraola.

Meanwhile, talkSPORT can also bring the news that Feyenoord’s Arne Slot – who has the Eredivise side sitting top of their league – is a rival candidate to the Rayo Vallecano boss.

Marsch – who had been in charge at Elland Road for a year – was given his marching orders following the Premier League strugglers’ 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

The American had gone more than three months without a win in the Premier League.

Leeds faced arch rivals Manchester United on Wednesday evening, and despite being managerless for the fixture, went 2-0 up at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford and the returning Jadon Sancho then drew the home side level in the second half.

The 2-2 draw leaves Leeds in 16th, one point off the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Man United are in third, rising to go two points off of second place Manchester City.

Good point that last night for Leeds.

However:

Rayo Vallecano have blocked Leeds United's approach for manager Andoni Iraola, Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has told BBC Sport.

Iraola, 40, has guided the Madrid side to fifth in La Liga this season, three points off the Champions League places.

He oversaw two victories against Barcelona last term and in November they beat champions Real Madrid 3-2.

Iraola was keen to speak with Leeds, who sacked Jesse Marsch on Monday, but was not granted

It was but they may see it as 2 points lost rather than a point gained as they were 2-0 up in the second half.

Yes, we dominated the first 50-55 minutes of the match and should have got 3 goals in first half only. But the final product is a big issue.

When both Adams and McKennie were booked in second half the momentum shifted.

And ManU have a crazy good squad, the fresh legs of Sancho and Pellistri were just too much in the end. And they didn't even have Casemiro, Eriksen, Anthony and the Leeds-killer McTominay on the bench.

I always feel that Leeds are a better side with a fully fit Bamford in the starting XI.

Unfortunately for Leeds he's been struggling for quite a while now with injuries.

Lots of huffing and puffing from Leeds but no end product.

They seem to lack that quality especially in the attacking areas.

In a relegation dogfight.

Leeds United’s strongest XI features an effective midfield engine room from the United States international team: Adams and McKennie. They also have some good attacking players in Bamford, Harrison, Summerville and Gnonto.

They’ve pulled some good results out at crucial times this season — beating Chelsea and Liverpool, getting draws at St James’s Park and at Old Trafford. There is some promise here.

But they often just lack that cutting edge in the final third — one more pass, a high quality shot, etc. It’s a not uncommon problem at this, the highest of levels, but it can turn out to be a decisive flaw over the course of a season.

There is also (beyond the reasonably capable first team) not much strength in depth within the squad. When a few first teamers are out injured or suspended, the bench will often be heavy on youth developmental talent. The famous Leeds United academy at Thorp Arch is renowned for producing good players, but this process takes years. At the moment, Leeds don’t have years.

Leeds also still haven’t managed to replace Liam Cooper and Luke Ayling, who were key defenders in the season where they got promoted from the Championship and remain automatic picks when available three years later, despite them now ageing and being adequate/modest players for the Premier League at best — they are loyal servants to the club but they both often make careless mistakes, which get punished far more ruthlessly at this level than they did in the Championship.

Two big fixtures against Everton & Southampton await us. Get a win and a draw from these two (or a couple of wins?!) and Leeds will create a gap between themselves and the drop zone.

Whereas if they get beaten in either of the games, they’re likely to be locked in a close relegation battle for the remainder of the season.

It’s getting tense.

Bad loss yesterday to Everton.

No manager and now 2nd bottom in the table.

Going down?

Bad loss yesterday to Everton.

No manager and now 2nd bottom in the table.

Going down?

Most of us think we’re going down.

Look like one of the worst most tactically and technically inept sides in the division and our form is absolutely awful. The defence is Sunday League standard.

Also some bad luck. Bamford never seems to be fit these days. Top scorer Rodrigo (14 this season in all comps) is also injured until the end of March with damaged angle ligaments.

Last league victory for Leeds was before the World Cup.

Still 15 games left so there is always plenty of times to turn around these situations, we’ve seen it many times before with teams at the foot of the table.

But at the moment, Leeds don’t have a full time manager and we can’t see where the next win is coming from, so it feels very bleak.

Former Liverpool and Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is interested in taking charge of Leeds, talkSPORT understands.

Benitez could save them from relegation.

Could be a very good appointment for them.

Former Watford boss Javi Gracia is set to be named the manager of Leeds United, ending the club's search for Jesse Marsch's successor.

Marsch was sacked on 6 February but the Whites have faced several setbacks in their hunt for his replacement.

Spaniard Gracia, 52, took Watford to the FA Cup final in 2019, before managing Valencia and Al Sadd in Qatar.

Leeds are 19th in the Premier League and face bottom club Southampton on Saturday.

Under-21 boss Michael Skubala has been in interim charge since Marsch's sacking despite club owner Andrea Radrizzani initially promising a quick appointment.

An approach for Rayo Vallecano's Andoni Iraola was blocked, while Feyenoord's Arne Slot ruled himself out.

Former Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder fell out of contention after a negative reaction from many fans, and Carlos Corberan - who previously worked under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds - signed a new contract at West Brom.

Leeds moved out of the Premier League relegation zone as Junior Firpo's second-half goal gave them a crucial 1-0 victory over bottom club Southampton in Javi Gracia's first game as manager.

In a tense and frantic match, left-back Firpo found himself in space in the box after Jack Harrison's flick to slot home under Gavin Bazunu and send Elland Road into raptures - and his team towards a priceless three points.

Prior to that the game had been balanced on a knife-edge, played out in front of an anxious crowd and between two sides knowing a single costly error could see them staring into the abyss.

The win is Leeds' first in the league since 6 November and takes them to 22 points, a point and a position above 18th-placed Everton.

The defeat for Saints - their first under caretaker boss Ruben Selles - means they stay bottom, four points from safety.
