Liverpool fans with there excuses - LOL, there was no difference in the defence when VVD was there at the beginning of the season, looks like they forget when AV were running circles around him for a full 90 minutes, they had a good run but it doesn't last forever, since the Watford thrashing they've been average.

Jurgen Klopp stoked the fire ahead of Manchester United's trip to Anfield next weekend by comparing penalty records after Liverpool were denied two spot-kicks in Monday's defeat at Southampton.

Danny Ings' stunning second-minute strike against his former club ended Liverpool's 12-game unbeaten run in the Premier League as the champions' winless run stretched to three games.

Klopp was aggrieved his side were not awarded either of their two second-half penalty appeals, with a Kyle Walker-Peters challenge on Sadio Mane and Jack Stephens' handball while blocking a Georginio Wijnaldum shot going unpunished by referee Andre Marriner.

Liverpool remain top ahead of Manchester United on goal difference despite suffering a second league defeat of the season, but the champions could be replaced as outright Premier League leaders by the time they welcome their rivals to Anfield on January 17 - live on Sky Sports - if United avoid defeat in their game in hand against Burnley.

It would appear the mind games have already begun ahead of the mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash, with Klopp questioning officiating over recent seasons, saying United "had more penalties in two years than I had in five-and-a-half years".

"If anybody ever again will say Sadio Mane is a 'diver', it's the biggest joke in the world," Klopp told Sky Sports. "This boy tries to stay on his feet with all he has. In two situations… other teams will get a penalty for it, let me say it like this. Then the handball, I don't know who will explain that to me."

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Klopp added: "We had a really good view of it [the Mane incident], and it looked like a clear penalty. I turned around to the fourth official and asked if it was going to be checked, he said it already had been and was not a penalty. That's 100 per cent true, and now someone wants to tell me how quick they had it in all these different angles.

"Last year, there was a penalty against Leicester when people said Sadio Mane goes down too easily - if he goes down easily, we would have had a penalty in this game and the last game, a stonewall penalty, but what Andre Marriner did with Sadio Mane I'm not sure if that's okay.

"The boy tried everything, had a few great challenges with Walker-Peters, but there were a lot of situations which should have been free-kicks. The last one, when he goes down, you see that back and in the box he hits him in the end with his left foot, that's a penalty.

"We cannot change. I hear now that Manchester United had more penalties in two years than I had in five-and-a-half years. I've no idea if that's my fault, or how that can happen.

"But it's no excuse for the performance. We cannot change it, we have to respect the decisions. But we can change our performance. That's our focus now."

Georginio Wijnaldum and Liverpool reach stalemate over new contract

Talks between Georginio Wijnaldum and Liverpool over a new contract have reached a stalemate.

A long-standing offer of a new deal remains on the table but, for now, the 30-year old Dutch midfielder has not accepted it.

Sky Sports News has been told suggestions that Wijnaldum has turned down a new contract offer from Liverpool are wide of the mark.

The player, who is out of contract in the summer, wants to stay at Anfield but believes his wages should compare more favourably with the club's top earners.

Jurgen Klopp has made it clear he wishes to keep Wijnaldum, who has played in all 17 of Liverpool's Premier League games this season.

Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman remains keen to sign his compatriot but, as of yet, that interest has not progressed into an official offer from the Spanish giants to either the player or Liverpool.

A difficult start to the LaLiga season, as well as their ongoing presidential elections, has put any potential transfer business on hold, while Koeman's future at the club looks far from secure.

Barca's long-term intentions towards Wijnaldum may become clearer after the new club president is announced on January 24.

"With all the things said before the game - they're flying and we're struggling - my boys did a good game tonight.

"First half the counter-press was great, passing was good. But we didn't score. That's the most important thing in football.

"The second half was a bit more open. They had two big chances - Alisson made two good saves.

"There is no easy explanation [for their recent lack of goals]. You always miss chances. You have to keep going and try to ignore the talk around it. Everyone wants to see goals. You cannot force it.

"It's football. These moments happen. You have moments where you can't explain why you score from all angles. Against Crystal Palace everything ended up in the net. It's a bit annoying in between these moments.

"I like the game. I saw a lot of really good individual perfomances and the team performance was good. Not the result we wanted, but the result we got."
 
I think Liv title hopes might be done. It’s now a matter of hoping others around them falter.

Having two midfielders in defence has hurt the balance. Three games without scoring is a shocker.
 
Salah, Firminho, Alexander-Arnold just 3 of the players who are below par at the moment.

There defence is fine, because its the front 3 that get them going and they haven't been firing at all.

Saying that, now they are 4th in the table, looks like they will be fighting to get into top 4 this season, wouldn't be surprised if spurs finished above them.
 
Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool’s winless run only down to small margins

Jurgen Klopp has played down Liverpool’s current form, believing only small margins are separating his side from a return to winning ways.

Four matches without a win, the last three without scoring, has led to scrutiny not previously experienced by the defending champions.

A lack of goals is being held up as the prime reason for their recent failure but Klopp is refusing to panic, instead looking at the bigger picture.

"We all know it is all about results but sometimes you can see little steps in the right direction or not," he said.

"But it is nothing for you (the media) because you can't deal with small details. You make them big things. You are not ready for this information.

"We wanted to play better but there were a lot of good signs and I cannot ignore them and I will not.

"You cannot change the approach because everybody who has no real idea about the job expects now massive changes, from the wake-up call to the nutrition, because we don't have the results.

"Sometimes we have to be really, not stubborn, resilient maybe, and do it.

"I understand that at the moment in the press conference people think 'Oh he is so entertaining' and now they think 'What kind of mood is he in?', 'Does he see reality?'

"It (scrutiny) is just getting earlier and earlier but it is all fine. We are on it, believe me."

Klopp's side cannot yet take encouragement from videos of Virgil van Dijk in Dubai stepping up his rehabilitation from surgery on an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The club have been reluctant to rule the influential centre-back out, absent since mid-October, of the whole season and while the manager was optimistic he was also cautious about raising expectations.

"I don't know what is possible and I don't think I am the right person to judge it," he said.

"He looks really good and I spoke to him this morning and he is in a good mood but I don't know when he will be back.

"I had this injury myself but for the time we are in and how long he is out he looks really really promising."

Jurgen Klopp tried to deflect scrutiny away from his misfiring Liverpool attack by insisting he was to blame for the champions' shock defeat to Burnley.

The Clarets were the only visiting side to take points off Liverpool during last season's title-winning campaign and went one better on Thursday as Ashley Barnes' penalty ended the Reds' 68-game unbeaten league run at Anfield.

Liverpool's first home league defeat since April 2017 was made all the more alarming by their failure to score in four consecutive Premier League games for the first time in 21 years, with seven hours and 18 minutes passing since they last found the net.

Klopp took full responsibility for the defeat, which extended Liverpool's winless run to five games, highlighting his failure to give his players the tools they needed to overcome a stubborn Burnley outfit.

"The game was impossible to lose, but we did," Klopp told Sky Sports. "That's my fault because it's my job to make sure the boys have the right feelings, the right amount of confidence and make the right decisions.

"That obviously didn't work out because we had the ball a lot, created some situations that were OK, but in the final moment or decision-making is not right at the moment, and that's the problem.

"You have the ball in the right place but then you don't shoot, you pass. I'm pretty sure I said the same thing last week.

"When you have the problem of something not working you have to try harder, longer and more often and make better decisions. It's obviously didn't work out tonight and we have to admit that, there's nothing else to say about it."

Klopp added: "It's always my fault, the things that don't work are my fault, the things that do work are down to the players. Credit to the players because it's what they make of it.

"We have worked so long together now that if I make clear which movements make sense and will hurt the opponent and we don't do them, then I have to make it clearer. That's how it is."

Liverpool have taken just three points from a possible 15 and sit fourth in the table, six points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United ahead of Sunday's FA Cup fourth-round tie at Old Trafford.

Finding solutions to Liverpool's attacking problems, though, is now top of the agenda for Klopp.

"I never thought about us a free-scoring side or unit, I always knew we had to work really hard and do a lot of things right to get into those positions," Klopp said.

"You have moments where a player takes one touch and the next one is in the top corner, but that isn't happening at the moment. It's not the first time it has happened in football, it won't be the last time.

"The good thing is we can change it; we just have to work on it. We cannot work on it tonight; we just can use it for the next one.

"We're not feeling confident in these moments, that's something we have to work on. It's not that we are not creating chances because the players don't have the ability to do so, it's because our decision-making is the problem.

"The difference between a good football player and a very good footballer is decision-making, the right choice in the right moment. It's not rocket science.

"We had a lot of good moments with Trent [Alexander-Arnold] in the second half where he was in the right place and tried to pass the ball inside, but then we were not in the right moment. That's a feeling for the boys they haven't got at the moment."
 
Liverpool will be lucky to get top 4 this season, the squad has been found out , no real bench strength, and people had the cheek to compare this team to the UTD treble winners, Mourinhos first spell at chelsea, arsenal invincible etc. They played well last few seasons but nowhere near any of the great sides of the past.
 
Well that’s that. Title hopes are effectively over.

The squad has been run to the ground. A refresh in needed in the summer.

Surprised that despite all the injuries in defence, it's the attacking side of the team that has struggled this season.

Salah has looked off the pace recently, Firminho has struggled and Mane has looked isolated. Jota is a big miss and Origi is simply not good enough.

its not hate, its a very realistic scenario based on current form and depth of squad compared to others, last year was a freak year as liverpool went full throttle for the whole 30/35games that won them the tittle, this year no gas left in the tank players are getting injured, you cannot maintain the same momentum.

His “heavy metal” football is not sustainable, but it is worth it because it produces results in the short-term.

When you win the PL and the UCL in consecutive seasons, you are allowed to have a stinker.

Liverpool will need to refresh and rebuild now with the likes of Salah and Firminho moving on.

Salah is still brilliant but his Liverpool cycle is coming to an end. Both him and the club need a fresh start. He has achieved everything at Liverpool.
 
The club also deserves the blame for not signing a CB in the January window. Klopp’s frustrating is understandable.

Pretty much this, the season they won the champions league they lost the league by 1 point, last season to ensure this did not happen again, every player ran through walls to win the league. The constant pressing works in the short term, but no one can keep up this relentless pressure. This season players are feeling the effects getting injured and liverpool board did not build on the squad hich means the players that come in as replacements are not good enough. Salah , Mane and Firminho trio is past their sell by date, brilliant players still in their own right but they need a new challenge and motivation, this is why fergie was such a good manager, he would move players on at their peak to avoid them going stale.
 
These players have come to the end of their cycle. They have a lot of success but when you play that intensity, you need to consistently refresh your team. Liverpool have been too slow in this aspect. Now they have a lot of players close to 30, so it will take some time to rebuild.

The backup players have been brought in to suddenly perform when they've hardly had a kick for the last couple of years, which was always going to be a risk.

Origi and Shaqiri have been thrown in with the expectation that they will start performing in an instant which is unfair on them.

Their attackers are back in form and Salah broke his drought with two goals.

For a side that is depleted, their position in the league is exceptional.

A very bad few weeks could be crucial at the end of the season. From being well ahead in the league to third albeit only one behind that lot is not good. We will finish second now unless City slip up which they rarely do after being top of the league.
 
Winning one league title is a great achievement but coming back the next season to do it all again is something altogether different as Liverpool is currently finding out.
 
Liverpool were awful. They got what they deserved tonight - nothing.

7 points behind Man City and played a game more.

Playing to the level they did for three years, which included record runner-up points haul to record breakers, a champions League, final, champions, the League and Club World cup too wasn't bad. With the pandemic induced congesture factored in, it was impossible they maintain the level without their hedge fund owners investing big in the last few years, which they didn't, let alone now.

Man City have found a more conserving style under Pep which is working a treat but they've also got UCL and I'm thinking Leicester are very well placed right now.

This is part of football I am afraid. What usually separates the top top clubs from the rest is the strength in depth in squads, Liverpool’s bench strength unfortunately hasn’t been up to it. Having said that the 11 that started included firminho salah TAA Henderson thiago, was easily good enough to see of Brighton so Klopp will rightly be fuming.
 
We had enough on the pitch to easily take care of Brighton. We struggle to break the defence of an opposition that parks the bus in front of goal or defends deep. Worse still was we didn't create any chances at all. No creativity at all.
 
Successive home defeats to Burnley and Brighton. Incredible.

Both were very poor performances with no Plan B.

Thoroughly outclassed today by City.

But you have to say, Liverpool really missing their central defence this season. Van Dijk was a huge player for them and Alisson with two huge brain fades giving it away on a silver platter to City.

Perhaps the time for some of the current players is up and new faces are needed.

Yeah, I heard first time three home defeats since the Shankly days back in 63/64.
 
I don't think this was a humiliation as such despite the scoreline and doubt many pundits will see it like that either. Remember, there were two big gifts by Alisson.

Man City are a team on the way up whilst Liverpool are on the way down so a result like this was possibly on the cards with the added factor of an unusual season with some real unpredictable results.

However, no doubt this is a big blow for the Kloppites and leaves them adrift in the title race by a significant margin.

What I would say though is not to panic. There's still a long way to go and Liverpool will need to find a way to put some results together to start putting pressure on the leaders.

Wonder what Klopp’s next excuse is going to be...Some serious gems this season...

- No pre-season (cos of course that only applies to Liverpool)

- Fixture congestion (well maybe don’t play your first team in dead CL games and against a sides academy)

- The weather...the wind apparently was a problem against Everton (Ty from AFTV understands Klopp on that one)

- City had a two week break due to covid and poor Liverpool have no rest (City had a week off and a covid outbreak isn’t a holiday lol)

- Injuries to centre backs (well maybe play the ones you just bought and that’s what squads are for)

- No fans with the 12th man missing (yes only Liverpool fans aren’t allowed at grounds currently)

- Referees are biased against Liverpool (erm Salah)

- No 5 subs (rarely ever makes three)

- Kickoff times are too early (as they are for everyone)

What’s even better is some of the excuses made for them:

- The grass at Villa Park is too long (Souness following the 7-2)

- It’s very cold (Tyler on Alisson’s mare)

Sure I’ve missed a few...would be jokes if they don’t make top 4...
 
No excuses or anything at all. We are just not good enough this season, simple. As Roy Keane said it is almost as if winning the EPL once the players now seem disinterested in doing it again thinking they have become club legends. When well in the oppositions area we pass it back to the defenders or keeper which was not happening last season. City deserved to win today no doubt about it at all. Have always felt uncomfortable when Alisson has the ball at his feet. A good shot stopper but often overrated as well.

I’m sure this team was compared to the great Man Utd , Chelsea, Man City teams of the past who have retained the title. Will be lucky to get top 4 at this rate. :))

save this victim mentality, last season you deserved to win, this season your players thought it would be a walk in the park and you paid the price, stop blaming injuries' this is part of the game, you should be blaming your manager and your board for not having adequate replacements .

The writings been on the wall since the beginning of the season, when your defence including Van Dijk conceded 7 against a team who were lucky not to get relegated last season. You conceded 3 against a very average man utd, 4 against Man city, lost to Brighton Burnley. Save the injury excuses your telling me your squad players are not good enough to beat Villa, Brighton and Burnley.

Fact is as Roy Keane put it yesterday, this has been the worst defence of a title ever. The writings been on the wall since the beginning of the season, when your defence including Van Dijk conceded 7 against a team who were lucky not to get relegated last season. You conceded 3 against a very average man utd, 4 against Man city, lost to Brighton Burnley. Part of why Liverpool fans deserve to be bantered is a lot actually claimed the side that won last season is the best side in PL history lol...

And the reason I posted what I did is the excuses for the decline have just been cringeworthy...if it was just injuries that would be one thing but their manager actually had the gall to blame the weather...

It feeds into that victim mentality that this club have always had ...

Relax, calm down. It’s only a sport. I am a Liverpool fan and don’t take it this seriously.. I have bigger things to worry about. What exactly do you get out of bantering Liverpool fans? Chill
 
Liverpool have been ordered to pay Fulham a record compensation fee for a 16-year-old following Harvey Elliott's transfer to the club in 2019.

lol Still above Villa who have won nothing yet. Losing players has cost us but there is no decline, we will still be favs to win the league next season along with City.

Btw RIP to the mother of Jurgen, sad times for him, as he is unable to go to Germany.

Liverpool have looked fine away where other than United in the cup and Leicester, which they were in control of before their implosion.

It's the form at Anfield which causes them concern but their altruistic neighbours are at hand to get them back to winning ways.
 
Dead in the Prem, but very much alive in the UCL. Probably looking to the UCL to save their season. They can beat Juve, Real, Dortmund. But I don't see them getting past PSG or Bayern.
 
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker's father, Jose Agostinho Becker, has died aged 57 in Brazil.

Local police inspector Doroteo Machado Filho said Becker drowned at a dam near his holiday home in Lavras do Sul.

Liverpool said they are "deeply saddened" by the death and asked for privacy for Alisson and his family.

"The thoughts of everybody at the club are with Alisson and the Becker family at this incredibly sad and difficult time," the Premier League club tweeted.
 
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been ruled out for up to 10 weeks as a result of the groin injury he suffered against Everton.

The England midfielder, 30, was forced off in the first half in Saturday's 2-0 Merseyside derby defeat to add to the club's defensive problems.

He joins Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Fabinho on the sidelines.

Henderson has had surgery and will miss three England World Cup qualifiers but is expected to return this season.
 
Ray Clemence, Gerard Houllier and now Ian St John has sadly passed away.

He was one of Bill Shankly's top signings that kickstarted a golden era.

Other fans will also know him as one half of Saint and Greavsie - the popular Saturday afternoon football programme. He was a pundit on LFCTV for years too.

RIP legend.

Georginio Wijnaldum has reportedly chosen to leave Liverpool at the end of the season to join Barcelona.

The midfielder’s future has been a big talking point this season with his Anfield contract set to expire in June.

The 30-year-old Netherlands international recently said he’d be ‘devastated’ to leave Liverpool, while manager Jurgen Klopp insisted he’d like Wijnaldum, who he says has been the club’s most consistent player this season, to stay.

“I am pretty happy with Gini. You can see that when you see most of the line-ups. He always played good, that’s why he played so many games,” Klopp said earlier this season.

“And he has played plenty of positions; different positions.”

However, the Sunday Times says the player has agreed a pre-contract deal with Barca, which will make him the first signing of Joan Laporta’s second spell as president of the club.

Wijnaldum is understood to have been a priority target of compatriot Ronald Koeman, who has been Barcelona head coach since last August.

Barca’s financial problems put them off chasing Wijnaldum last summer but the fact he’s soon to be a free agent makes his acquisition even more appealing.

Wijnaldum joined Liverpool from Newcastle in 2016 for £25million and has played a big role in helping the Reds become Premier League champions last season and European champions the season before.

The Wijnaldum performance Liverpool fans will always remember was actually against Barcelona, where the Reds incredibly turned around a 3-0 deficit to get the better of the LaLiga giants in the Champions League semi-finals in 2018/19.

He was benched for the second leg at Anfield but was brought on at half time and levelled the tie eleven minutes into the second half with two quickfire goals.
