What's new

Manchester United | 2022/23 Season

Silly stuff from Casemiro. We had control of the game but after his sending off, we conceded a goal and had to hang in for the win. As an experienced player, he should have known better than putting his hands on another player's throat.

We will now miss him from the two games against Leeds and the Leicester game, so it won't be easy. But on a positive note, Sabitzar came on and looked decent. We will surely need him in the next few games.

Rashford superb again and Fernandez is looking back to his best once again.

Things definitely looking good at Old Trafford, sitting comfortably in third place.

Goalkeeper David de Gea says contract talks with Manchester United will "end in a good way".

The 32-year-old Spain international, who has made 517 appearances in almost 12 years at United, is out of contract in the summer.

He is now free to agree pre-contract terms with an overseas club.

"We're still talking," said De Gea. "For sure it's going to end in a good way."

United beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday to extend their winning run at home to 13 games in all competitions.

Erik ten Hag's side are third in the table - eight points behind leaders Arsenal - and will face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on 26 February.

"I've been in very tough moments for this club. Now I'm enjoying it more," said De Gea.

"It's great. The team spirit is great; the atmosphere is great. Everyone is thinking in the same way, playing in the same way.

"A good manager; good players who bring experience to the team; people who want the ball, who play well with the ball - it's a mix of everything.

"Everyone fights until the end. It's great to watch the team playing and performing well. We're on a great run."

Manchester United star Anthony Martial has been put up for sale as Erik ten Hag looks to sign a world class striker this summer.

The Frenchman has failed to complete 90 minutes this season and he’s scored just six times in an injury-hit campaign.

Martial made a comeback from injury in the 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest last Wednesday but was missing from the squad that beat Crystal Palace three days later as he suffered another injury setback.

Ten Hag is a fan of Martial and feels United’s attack link-up best with the Frenchman at its tip.

However, Martial has shown he cannot be relied on this season and the club pushed to sign Wout Weghorst on loan in January.

With Ten Hag set to have limited funds this summer, United know they must raise funds to sign a top centre forward and central midfielder.

The Manchester Evening News say Martial will be a victim of the club’s finances and he’s been put up for sale in a bid to raise revenue.

Harry Maguire, Alex Telles and Anthony Elanga are other players likely to leave.

Frenkie de Jong, the Barcelona midfielder, remains Ten Hag’s priority target in midfield but the Dutchman has enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance at the Camp Nou this season.

Manchester United will look to sell French forward Anthony Martial, 27, England centre-back Harry Maguire, 29, and Brazilian left-back Alex Telles, 30, in the summer as the club aims to make room for a new striker in Tottenham's England captain Harry Kane 29, or Napoli's 24-year-old Nigeria international Victor Osimhen. Qatari investors will soon make a formal bid for Manchester United which they are confident will beat any competition, with the Glazer family seeking a £6bn sale. (Mail)

Manchester United takeover: Qatari fund set to bid for Premier League club but will not pay Glazer family's £6bn asking price

Private investors linked to the Qatari royal family are considering making a bid to buy Manchester United next week.

The investors were contacted to see if they would be interested in buying United and have now registered their interest with the Raine Group, the investment bank who are marketing the sale of the club.

Raine have asked for bids to be submitted by the end of next week and although the Qatari investors are interested, they will not overpay for the club.

The Glazer family who currently own United are believed to be looking for a sale price of £6bn, with the club valued at £3.2bn on the New York Stock Exchange.

Qatar has made no secret of the fact it wants to invest in more sports to build on what it sees as the success of the World Cup.

The investors involved in the United process are not Paris Saint-Germain owners Qatar Sports Investments.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS group have already confirmed they are bidding to buy United and there is interest from the USA and other areas of the Middle East.

Manchester United manager on the development of 18-year-old Argentine midfielder Alejandro Garnacho: "I think he is doing well, he has an impact on our game, I think he is a threat.

"[In Wednesday's 2-2 draw at home to Leeds] he had good actions, he was lively, created chances, but had to score. And finally, it's about that, that you have an effect.

"As a striker, you have to at least be on the scoring list, the assist list, key action list to have the right impact. As a Man United player, we expect you to have an impact - to influence the score, to influence the result, to positively influence the game by scoring goals and having an assist."

On his reaction to being substituted: "He's quite emotional, that is a strength he brings to his game - he wants to win, he wants to play football, he doesn't want to miss any minute and I think that is a good thing. He's totally convinced about himself and he wants to contribute to the end. But he accepts decisions and the team is always above everything and I think he knows that."

On his ability to beat people: "I think all the players have to be brave, to try, if it's in the interests of the team. That is what he is doing quite well because he is taking players on and he is outplaying them. He is creating chances, [but] from [the draw against Leeds] he should have scored."

Solid win today at Leeds.

Not at their best but showed their quality when it mattered.

Up to 2nd place in the table now.

Manchester United and Barcelona contested a thrilling first-leg draw at the Nou Camp to leave their Europa League play-off tie finely poised.

Having previously met in two Champions League finals - both of which Barca won - the sides are on the path to recovery in trying to reach those heady heights again.

This encounter in Europe's secondary competition was another step on that road back to the top.

Xavi's men grabbed the opener when Marcos Alonso headed in at the back post from Raphinha's corner, but United responded immediately through the in-form Marcus Rashford as he slipped in a finish at the near post.

Erik ten Hag's side showed their resilience to turn the game around as Rashford's cross was then turned into his own net by Barcelona defender Jules Kounde.

But United were unable to hold on as ex-Leeds winger Raphinha's cross from wide on the right sailed all the way into the net.

Barca, though, almost snatched a late victory when Casemiro's attempted clearance struck his own post, but little separated the sides heading into next Thursday's second leg at Old Trafford.

Qatar to make £5bn bid for the takeover of Manchester Utd.

What a game of football the first leg against Barcelona was. That felt like a champions league tie.

We did really well and I am proud of how far we have come under Ten Hag.

Still, I am not too bothered about the Europa League as we don’t have the squad to compete in every competition, and we will most likely finish in the top four anyway. The priority should be the league cup final and securing top four.

That was an absolutely crazy game. The 2nd half was non-stop end-to-end stuff, so entertaining. Casemiro was having a great match defensively dominating, then a few minutes later gives the ball away to lead to the goal and kicks it onto his own post. Sums up how chaotic it was.

ETH has done a great job to produce that at the Nou Camp, but defensively both sides were pretty awful.

You should dispatch them at OT though.

Manchester United fans and the rest of the footballing world are waiting to see who throws their hat into the ring to buy the club as Friday's 'soft' deadline for submitting proposals approaches.

United's owners, the Glazer family, are considering selling the club as they "explore strategic alternatives".

There has only been one public declaration so far, from businessman Sir Jim Ratcliffe, one of Britain's richest men.

After days of rumours, it is expected there will be a bid from Qatar. There is also expected to be at least two offers from the United States and there have been suggestions of interest from Saudi Arabia.

That means there could be up to five parties trying to negotiate a full sale, with others looking to make a smaller investment in return for a partial take in the Old Trafford outfit.

Who has bid so far?

Despite suggestions that United have not attracted the interest expected by their owners, insiders have told BBC Sport the process has proceeded positively.

As they stated in their announcement on a potential sale in November, the Glazer family are still considering "all strategic alternatives" for the club, which could include new investment or other transactions involving the company.

Lifelong United fan Ratcliffe, one of Britain's richest men, is said to be determined in his interest and is understood to have employed the services of banking giants JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs to help him.

As with Chelsea, US interest is set to be backed by private equity. Bids from Qatar and Saudi Arabia are complicated due to ownership of Paris St-Germain and Newcastle respectively.

United boss Erik ten Hag said his players were "following" news of the takeover but they would not be distracted.

Speaking after Thursday's 2-2 draw with Barcelona in the Europa League play-offs first-leg, he said: "We are focusing on games and we are in four competitions. Others in the club will have to make decisions and give efforts in the process, but it's not up to us.

"I focus on football. They are focusing on other parts, departments of the club. How to get everything, for instance, financed."

What would a Qatari bid look like?

A final round of bidding was initially planned for March by the US-based Raine Group, which has been put in charge of finding new owners or investors.

Paris St-Germain president Nasser al-Khelaifi is set to be a key figure in any Qatari ownership bid, even if he could have no direct involvement in the club.

Qatar Sports Investment (QSI), headed by Al-Khelaifi, had been looking at the potential for taking a smaller stake in a Premier League club, which would be allowed under Uefa rules that prevent multi-club ownership. QSI already has a minority stake in Portuguese side Braga.

However, given QSI's ownership of PSG, which it has no interest in selling, any Qatari move to buy United in its entirety would have to come through private individuals or a different organisation.

This could potentially be the Qatar Investment Authority - a global investment platform that includes London department store Harrods and the UK's largest building the Shard in its portfolio.

Even that may require European governing body Uefa to change its rules on dual ownership, given it is felt by many that all Qatari funds are distributed from a central source.

Al-Khelaifi could therefore be key in helping any bid proceed.

Why is Al-Khelaifi key?

Al-Khelafi, 49, took a more prominent position in football's political circles when he refused to hitch PSG to the European Super League bandwagon.

That decision is viewed as one of the major reasons why Uefa was able to resist the plan.

Since then, Al-Khelaifi has taken over as chairman of the European Clubs' Association and has developed a close relationship with Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin.

It is regarded as impossible that any Qatari bid for United could be being put together without his knowledge.

United and PSG are not in the same competition this season, so any amendments to Uefa regulations to allow Qatari ownership at Old Trafford would not need to be activated until the end of July. It would then have to be approved by Uefa's executive committee.

Concerns over Qatari involvement
The prospect of Qatari investment in a Premier League club - and two major European teams being owned by the Gulf country - has raised concerns for some.

Human rights group Fair Square has written to Ceferin, copying in Premier League chief Richard Masters, "to highlight several issues of serious concern" after reports that "entities linked to the Qatari government are proposing a bid that would enable them to take a controlling stake in Manchester United".

The letter continues: "In line with Uefa's rules aimed at protecting the integrity of its competitions, we would urge Uefa to outline a clear public position prohibiting any takeover of this nature.

"No consortium of Qatari investors capable of such an acquisition would be able to convincingly demonstrate their independence from the Qatari state."

Manchester United LGBTQ+ fan group Rainbow Devils said on Friday: "Rainbow Devils believe any bidder which seeks to buy Manchester United must commit to making football a sport for everyone, including LGBTQ+ supporters, players and staff.

"We therefore have deep concern over some of the bids that are being made. We are watching the current process closely with this in mind."

A precedent for the Premier League would be the Saudi Arabian-backed £305m takeover of Newcastle United in 2021, which was only completed once the league received "legally binding assurances" that the Saudi state would not control the club.

Uefa has declined to comment but recently expressed concern about the potential "material threat" of multi-club ownership to the integrity of club competitions.

However, in 2017 Uefa did allow RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig to play in the Champions League, despite both clubs being closely associated with drinks giant Red Bull.

How much would United cost?

Last year Chelsea was sold for £4.25bn to a consortium led by American investor Todd Boehly and football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes United would be worth in the region of £5bn.

"We have seen United's share price more than double over the course of the last few months since the Glazers made the announcement," Maguire told BBC News.

"Presently the shares are valued at around £3.8bn, you add on the debts and we're probably coming to four-and-a-half. You need to persuade people to sell, so I think the asking price if you ask the Glazers it will be seven or eight billion. But I think the offers are more likely to be in the region of five or just over five.

"Manchester United claim to have 1.1 billion fans around the world and yet if you work out their revenues it comes to 500 million, so they are affectively getting 50p per fan per year.

"You have only got to double that, if you can make it £1 per fan per year all of a sudden Man Utd become a billion pound a year business, so long as you keep control of costs.

"By costs we really mean player wages, then United go from a business that is broadly breaking even into one which is making spectacular profits and large returns for investors."

What happens now?

Neither the Raine Group nor Manchester United are likely to make a formal statement once the deadline is passed.

It will be for the Glazer family to decide whether to proceed with a full sale. Co-chairmen Joel and Avi Glazer have always been viewed as the members of the family most interested in retaining some interest.

The initial aim had been to conclude a deal by the end of March, but confidence has been strong from the outset that it would certainly be done by the end of the season.

No United official has spoken about the process publicly but precedence dictates chief executive Richard Arnold will take questions from investors when the club announces its second quarter results at some point next month.

Are you not feeling a title race?
I hope we can hang in there and Aston villa can do us a favour , and then we get 4 players back next week.
Casemeiro Anthony Mctominay and Martial should be back by after the final at least and then at least gives us a bench to use in the second half.

I'm really hoping that arsenal drop points Vs emery tomorrow and if we then win our game we are very close.

Arsenal and city have to play again and city will also have to focus on CL at some point. There squad is not what it was after the loss of fernandinho, cancelo , zinch, Jesus, sterling as those players have only been replaced by lewis, Alvarez and Phillips who is a nobody compared to rodri and even an ageing fernandinho.
I think we will know on Monday if we are in a title race

So the Qatar bid has now gone in.

Manchester United: Qatar's Sheikh Jassim and Ineos make bids for Premier League club

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, the chairman of one of Qatar's biggest banks, has confirmed his foundation will bid to buy Manchester United.

BBC Sport understands that Ineos, owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, also officially made a bid before Friday's 22:00 GMT 'soft deadline' for proposals.

Billionaire Ratcliffe had already stated his interest in buying United.

The Glazer family, who bought United in 2005, are considering selling as they "explore strategic alternatives".

Sheikh Jassim's Qatari consortium said: "The bid plans to return the club to its former glories.

"The bid will be completely debt free via Sheikh Jassim's Nine Two Foundation, which will look to invest in the football teams, the training centre, the stadium and wider infrastructure, the fan experience and the communities the club supports.

"The vision of the bid is for Manchester United to be renowned for footballing excellence, and regarded as the greatest football club in the world."

Started slowly today against Leicester City but then their class shone through.

Rashford, Fernandes brilliant once again.

Only 3 points behind Man City now.

The Manchester United Supporters' Trust says the two bids made for the club have raised questions about sporting integrity, debt levels and inclusivity.

British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his petrochemicals firm Ineos have bid for "majority ownership".

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, chairman of one of Qatar's biggest banks, has also tabled a bid.

MUST has a "clear list" of demands for owners, but add "further considerations arise" with the two official bids.

The Glazer family, who have owned United since 2005, are considering selling the club and a 'soft deadline' of Friday was set for proposals.

The American owners confirmed they wanted to "explore strategic alternatives" for the club.

MUST says they want a new owner to invest in the team, wider club, Old Trafford and "ensure financial stability", adding these principles have been backed by 150 Manchester United fan groups from across the world.

Ineos said it wants to make the 20-time English champions a "beacon for a modern, progressive, fan-centred approach to ownership".

The Ineos group, owned by 70-year-old British billionaire Ratcliffe, has a history of investment in sport and owns French Ligue 1 club Nice and Swiss Super League club Lausanne.

Described as a life-long Manchester United fan, Sheikh Jassim is chairman of Qatari bank QIB and the son of a former prime minister of Qatar.

Paris St-Germain president Nasser al-Khelaifi is set to be a key figure in any Qatari ownership bid, even if he could have no direct involvement in the club.

The prospect of Qatari investment in a Premier League club - and two major European teams being owned by the Gulf country - has raised concerns among human rights and LGBTQ+ groups.

"There are questions about sporting integrity given the exceptionally close links between some bidders and the owners of other European clubs including PSG and Nice," said MUST, which is one of the largest supporters' groups in the world with over 200,000 members.

"There are also questions about whether any bids will also be based on high levels of debt.

"We also note the importance that any owner respects the rights of all people, particularly women and the LGBTQ+ community. Concerns have been raised by other fans groups which we fully support."

Qatar Sports Investment (QSI), headed by Al-Khelaifi, had been looking at the potential for taking a smaller stake in a Premier League club.

However, because of Uefa rules that prevent prevent multi-club ownership, any Qatari bid to buy United in its entirety would have to come through private individuals or a different organisation.

There are also expected to be at least two offers for United from the United States, while there have been suggestions of interest from Saudi Arabia.

That means there could be up to five parties trying to negotiate a full sale, with others looking to make a smaller investment in return for a partial stake in the Old Trafford club.

"We urge all bidders to open a dialogue with fans groups alongside the bidding process with the club, in order to discuss their proposals including the above issues," added MUST.

United are third in the Premier League after appointing Erik ten Hag as their new manager last summer, with the Dutchman also leading them to the League Cup final.

MUST added it wants any prospective bidder to "explicitly commit" to backing Ten Hag.

With the plaque of Ronaldo removed Manu are back on track ticking off games now the big one against Barcelona hopefully they will beat them

After the 3-0 victory over Leicester on Sunday, videos circulated on social media of Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag raising his arms and shouting a rallying message to the fans before heading down the tunnel at Old Trafford.

It comes at the start of the most pivotal week of Ten Hag's impressive first season at United, with the Red Devils facing two crucial fixtures.

Asked what he was saying, Ten Hag replied: "Come Thursday, it is a big game, make sure you are there. We will beat Barcelona together."

Rashford scores twice as Man Utd beat Leicester
The La Liga leaders head to Old Trafford in their Europa League play-off second leg on Thursday.

Three days later is an arguably even bigger match, as United come up against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final, aiming to end their six-year trophy drought.

But it is also a key moment away from the pitch, as Friday saw bids go in for the takeover of the club.

The Manchester United Supporters' Trust released a statement on Sunday saying any prospective bidder "needs to explicitly commit to backing Erik and his plans to restore United to glory".

Ten Hag said: "I thank the fans when they have that trust in me, I feel committed with this club and I love to be here, but that (takeover) is not in my influence.

"What I can influence is the performance of this team and I will give [everything] to perform as good as possible."

Alejandro Garnacho is edging nearer to signing a new long-term deal at Manchester United after a deal in principle was reportedly agreed between player and club.

The two rival bidders for Manchester United would both run the club not for profit if they succeed in buying it from the Glazer family.

Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe made indicative offers to buy United before last Friday's soft deadline.

You should dispatch them at OT though.

I believe so. With Gavi, Pedri and Dembele unavailable for the return leg, I do believe that we should despatch them at OT.

And besides, Ten Hag has turned OT into a fortress. We lost the very first game of the season at home, and since then, we are unbeaten at home. I don't believe that Barcelona are beating us at home.

Manchester United must produce their "best performance this season" to beat Barcelona and reach the Europa League last 16, says manager Erik ten Hag.

Speaking to BT Sport before the game against Barcelona, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag said: "This is a big game, the whole of Europe is watching. It is like a Champions League game."

Good to see Man Utd lifting a trophy.

Very impressive improvement at the club since the new manager has taken over.

There is no better feeling as a fan than seeing your team lift a trophy. This is the first of hopefully many trophies under Ten Hag.

First trophy since 2017 for United. Ten Hag did it in 6 months, he's doing a great job.

Mind you, that's the easiest run to a trophy one could hope for :)))

You can only beat what's in front of you though.

It makes me really annoyed that we wasted three years with Ole, who didn't win a trophy, while Ten Hag has won a trophy in just 7 months.

I remember last year when people were saying that Man United are miles of from winning trophies. But Ten Hag winning the EFL trophy in just 7 months shows that you are never quite far away. All it takes is a great manager and a couple of right signings and you could be back challenging for trophies again.

I agree with your post but it’s not just winning the EFL cup but it’s the way and system we are playing and the fact that victories are being done by outplaying better teams on paper such as Barcelona.

Long may it continue.

I agree. We look like a proper team now with a right system. Every player knows his role within the team. Under Ole, we were Individual Fc and not a team. We are playing really well, and are winning majority of our games. And lets not forget that we are doing this without a proper number 9. Imagine if we had Osimien or Kane, we would be even better.

I am really excited about the rest of the season. I genuinely believe that we could win another trophy. Perhaps not the premier league, but we definitely have a great chance of winning either the FA cup or Europa League or maybe both.

Absolutely and a world class number 9 and a few new additions will perform much better if they are entering a harmonious dressing room.

I’m still confident that the Qataris will come and inject big money into United. All this talk about Glazers changing their mind is simply them playing hard ball.

I too believe that Glazers will sell. They are just trying to get as much money as they can and force the Qataris to increase their offer, which I think they will.

Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani is only interested in purchasing 100 per cent of Manchester United, according to reports.

Manchester United owners, the Glazers, are weighing up bids from multiple parties after revealing they were open to selling the club, last November.

The American owners are yet to receive their £5billion asking price and it is believed they could explore the idea of seeking investment for a minority stake in the club.

However, Sheikh Jassim has no interest in acquiring a minority stake and according to CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs, the Qatari bid is ‘all or nothing’.

Sheikh Jassim wants to buy the club now and in its entirety, or not at all.

INEOS owner and self-confessed Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe also submitted a bid.

But both offers look set to be rebuffed by the Glazers with the bidders still waiting for final confirmation from The Raine Group, the bank tasked with overseeing a potential sale.

Despite the Glazers’ heightened valuation, the market currently values Manchester United at £3.75bn with the two offers believed to be worth around that amount.

Sheikh Jassim is ready to pay the amount outright and clear United’s existing debts of £680m. He also wants to invest in a new stadium that could set him back a further £2bn.

Meanwhile, Ratcliffe is in talks with US banks JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs over the offer for the Red Devils.

Bidders including Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim are expected to have signed non-disclosure agreements.

Silverware returned to Old Trafford on Sunday after their Carabao Cup victory against Newcastle.

There is a chance for them to win a further three trophies in the campaign, with the players being offered a huge incentive to complete the collection.

And, according to the Daily Mail, each player will earn close to half a million pounds if they win the quadruple.

United are third in the Premier League and should they pip Arsenal and Manchester City to the title, players will take home £250,000.

A bonus of £85,000 has been incentivised for each of the FA Cup and Europa League, adding to the £65,000 they earned for the Carabao Cup.

Ten Hag’s side have enjoyed a rich vein of form as of late, and their trophy win at the weekend will surely spur them on for more success.

United winning the Premier League for the first time since 2013 is not out of the question, but they currently sit 11 points behind leaders Arsenal.

However, following their late win against West Ham on Wednesday night, United are one of the favourites to win the FA Cup.

The same can be said for their Europa League hopes after they reached the Round of 16 courtesy of their play-off win over Barcelona.

United’s season could be one for the history books, with the club looking much more competitive than they have been in recent years.

They have struggled to repeat the success they enjoyed under Sir Alex Ferguson since he left in 2013, but Ten Hag already looks like the right man to take them forward.

Manchester United takeover: Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe bids through to next stage

The two leading bidders for Manchester United have been told that they have made it through to the next stage of the process.

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani's and Sir Jim Ratcliffe's bid teams are set to meet Raine Group next week before they are given access to detailed financial information which would allow them to make firm offers.

Both parties want to buy Manchester United, while others are interested in a minority stake.

Sheikh Jassim believes his debt-free bid is the best bid on the table for the club and the community.

Sky Sports News reported earlier this week that Sheikh Jassim remains determined to buy United off the Glazers, with the Qatari businessman deciding not to attend the Carabao Cup final because he felt it was not appropriate under the circumstances.

Ratcliffe also remains determined to buy Manchester United and is totally committed to his bid.

The INEOS owner believes he has made a very good offer which will turn the club into a model of progressive, fan-centred ownership.

Both leading bidders are willing to pay a premium to own a trophy asset such as United but their opening indicative offers have fallen short of the Glazer family's reported £6bn asking price for the club.

Elliott Management, Oaktree Management and Oaktree Capital have submitted proposals to Raine which would involve providing financing for bidders or buying a minority stake in the club.

The fact that Sheikh Jassim and Ratcliffe are through to the next stage of the process does appear to suggest that the Glazer family, despite concerns, are prepared to sell the club for the right price.

My goodness me this is a spanking and a half :)))

Manchester United legend Gary Neville tore into Bruno Fernandes for his ‘disgraceful’ and ’embarassing’ behaviour as Liverpool inflicted a humiliating 7-0 defeat on the Red Devils.

The Red Devils suffered their biggest ever Premier League defeat after braces from Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and a late seventh from Roberto Firmino.

It was a humiliating defeat for Erik ten Hag’s side, who have been on a sensational run of form in recent months.

But the fight and spirit that has been on display by United in recent months simply wasn’t evident today, with Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Antony all guilty of losing their composure.

But no player was as guilty of losing their rag as Fernandes, who spent most of the second half making petulant challenges, arguing with officials and losing possession.

After the fifth goal went in, Fernandes was stood in the centre circle waiting to take kick-off as Ten Hag brought on Anthony Elanga for Marcus Rashford.

Fernandes threw his hands in the air as he saw it was Rashford, not himself, that was being taken off and it was the final nail in the coffin for Neville, who described the Portuguese’s actions as ‘disgraceful’.

‘Bruno Fernandes is stood in the centre circle with his arms raised asking: ‘Why is it me not coming off?’ said Neville.

‘Honestly, I have to say some of his behaviour in the second half has been a disgrace.’

Towards the end of the mauling, Neville went even further by describing Fernandes as ’embarassing’.

‘The second half has been an absolute disgrace, a shambles,’ said Neville.

‘Epitomised by no-one more than the captain Bruno Fernandes, who I think has been embarrassing at times in this game but I have to say it’s not their usual performance, spirit or form and he [Erik ten Hag] will deal with it very quickly.

Why just Bruno? Rashford was avg, their defence was a shambles.

Today, any team would have lost the way LFC played. But Utd bottled it when they realised LFC are angry and ready to fight every second.

Liverpool 7-0 Man Utd: Erik ten Hag says his side 'lost our heads' in Anfield thrashing

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says his side "lost our heads" in the 7-0 thrashing by Liverpool on Sunday.

The defeat was United's joint-heaviest in a competitive game while it was Liverpool's biggest win against their rivals.

Ten Hag's side were 1-0 down at the break before letting in six goals in the second half at Anfield.

"Second half it was not us. It was not our standards. We didn't play as a team," said Ten Hag.

Asked if he was angry with his side's second-half display, he added: "Yes, definitely, and surprised because I have seen the last weeks and months a team that is resilient and determined with a winning attitude.

"We didn't stick to the plan, we lose our heads. We didn't do our jobs. We didn't track back and it was really unprofessional."

This was United's first 7-0 defeat since they were thrashed by Wolves in December 1931, while the Red Devils were also beaten by the same score by Aston Villa in 1930 and Blackburn Rovers in 1926.

Ten Hag took over at United last summer and suffered a 4-0 defeat by Brentford and a 6-3 reverse at Manchester City early in his tenure.

The Dutchman added: "We have seen in the past we can bounce back. After Brentford, after Manchester City. This is definitely a strong setback and is unacceptable.

"We let the fans down and I'm really disappointed and angry about it.

"It is a reality check... It's a strong message [that] we get."

The defeat at Liverpool came a week after Ten Hag won his first trophy with United when they beat Newcastle United to win the Carabao Cup.

"It was a really bad performance and the worst of the year," said Ten Hag.

"We lost the game at the end of the first half and at the start of the second but you have to keep your head up and we didn't.

"It's all about showing discipline and we didn't, so that's when you start conceding goals.

"It's a really unprofessional performance and unnecessary. You have to do your jobs and we didn't."

That was completely awful even my Milan lost 5-0to Lazio but kept fighting and trying to score till the end, these guys just gave up at only 3 down embarrassing stuff :))

It's really really bad from united but I'm not going to forget the first 40 minutes. That was as good as we have played at anfield in years. We saw off the early Liverpool blitz quite calmly and we had good control.
The 2 goals after half time were really poor and that killed us. ETH has to take some blame for what happened next, as he should have taken off Bruno and weghorst and put on mactominay and Sabitzer and ask the players to shut up shop. Yet we got repeatedly countered by a team who loves to counter, and evidently had more energy than us and we were losing individual duels.
Anfield under lights can do that to you and ETH needs to learn that it is a unique fixture.

I've never got too carried away by our performance and yesterday was our acid test, but ultimately in what is the longest season ever, you can not play consistent top table football if you are playing 2 games a week all year with essentially the same 15 players- 2 of which are weghorst and Fred!

Why just Bruno? Rashford was avg, their defence was a shambles.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was not asking to be substituted towards the end of Sunday's 7-0 humiliation at Liverpool.

The Portuguese has been criticised for his behaviour and attitude in the game.

Ex-United captain Gary Neville questioned the 28-year-old gesturing to the bench when Marcus Rashford was substituted in the 85th minute.

BBC Sport has been told Fernandes was after clarification on his positioning after Antony Elanga replaced Rashford.

Fernandes also appeared to push the referee's assistant in the 81st minute as he tried to get the ball back from Trent Alexander-Arnold on the sidelines.

No action was taken by the referee at the time and the incident is not being investigated by the Football Association, whose rules only allow them to get involved retrospectively around decisions not seen by officials.

Martin Cassidy, chief executive of charity Ref Support UK, said it was a "serious offence" and Fernandes deserved "at least a five-game ban".

The assistant put his hand on Fernandes arm before the push and former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher said he has "mixed feelings" about the incident.

He told Sky Sports: "You don't want a player to be manhandling a match official, but I would suggest the assistant actually manhandles Fernandes more than he did.

"I think once the official does it first, Fernandes is almost like fly swatting, 'get out of my way, I want to get on with it'.

"So while I don't condone it... and I think the referee [Andrew Madley] is in a difficult position, because if he goes across and makes an issue of it, Fernandes is likely to say 'well, he grabbed hold of me first'. It is difficult."

Neville said United's second-half performance was a "shambles" which was "epitomised" by Fernandes, who "has been embarrassing at times".

He added: "That wasn't a captain's performance from a Manchester United player and I am sure Erik ten Hag will deal with that."

Fellow former United captain Roy Keane added: "Fernandes' body language today was nothing short of disgraceful."

On Monday, Rashford said United must ensure the match does not "define their season"

BBC

Marcus Rashford has said he wishes Manchester United could "play today" to "put things right" after Sunday's 7-0 Premier League loss at Liverpool.

Manager Erik ten Hag called the performance "unprofessional" in his post-match interview.

However, Rashford, 25, said the squad must ensure the match does not "define their season".

"I wish we could play a game today to try and put things right," the forward tweeted.

"The result is the result, and we can't see past that! We must not let it define our season. We have to trust the process and stick together."

The loss equalled United's heaviest defeat and is their worst result against Liverpool.

Their three previous losses by seven goals came against Blackburn Rovers in 1926, Aston Villa in 1930 and Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1931.

England international Rashford was not the only player to reflect on the match with goalkeeper David de Gea describing the result as "disastrous".

"I know these messages don't sit well on such a day," the Spaniard wrote on Twitter. "This was a disastrous moment for us and these results shouldn't happen, especially with the journey we are all on.

"We have a duty to this club, a responsibility to represent the badge but we have many opportunities to look ahead, many games coming fast and we have to lock our focus on these."

Bruno Fernandes should not captain Manchester United again - Chris Sutton

Bruno Fernandes should not captain Manchester United again following Sunday's humiliating 7-0 defeat by Liverpool, says Chris Sutton.

The Portuguese, who deputises in the absence of club captain Harry Maguire, was criticised for his behaviour and attitude in the game.

"There are people that are far better qualified to be captain," Sutton said.

"Fernandes is not their best leader. There are more suitable candidates than him, Casemiro being one."

Speaking on BBC 5 Live's Monday Night Club, former Premier League striker Sutton, who also suggested Raphael Varane as another option, added: "I think he should never put on the armband again for Manchester United."

Fernandes, 28, has 57 goals and 50 assists in 166 games for the club in all competitions, but his body language at Anfield was called "disgraceful" by former United captain Roy Keane, while another former skipper Gary Neville said he was "embarrassing at times".

He also appeared to push the referee's assistant in the 81st minute. No action was taken by the referee at the time and the incident is not being investigated by the Football Association

BBC Sport has also been told he did not ask to be substituted towards the end of the match, after questions were asked about a gesture he made to the bench.

At one point, when Liverpool's Stefan Bajcetic went past him by the touchline, Fernandes stopped rather than giving chase to the midfielder.

"That was a standout moment yesterday," added Sutton.

"However bad United were, you cannot just let someone run away from you and give up. That's what the captain of Manchester United did - and that's a bad look.

"I don't think he has any real arguments if he does get stripped of the captaincy," he added. "I think Bruno's days have to be numbered."

Wout Weghorst: Man Utd forward touched Anfield sign 'to wind up Virgil van Dijk'

Wout Weghorst says his dedication to Manchester United "can never be questioned" after he touched the 'This is Anfield' sign prior to his side's 7-0 thrashing by Liverpool on Sunday.

Forward Weghorst said his intention had been to "wind up" Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk in the tunnel.

"From the national team I know that Virgil always touches the sign," said Weghorst, who is on loan from Burnley.

"The only intention I had was to stop him touching it and wind him up."

It is rare for opposition players to touch the iconic sign, not least those of Liverpool's closest rivals Manchester United.

Weghorst, filmed reaching for the sign at the same time as Liverpool defender Van Dijk, has received criticism on social media.

Seeking to clarify the footage, Weghorst said on Instagram: "Normally I never react to media topics, but for this one it's worth it because you amazing Manchester United fans are important to me.

"As a child I always supported FC Twente, and as a proud player now for Manchester United my dedication to this club can never be questioned.

"Sunday was a terrible day for all of us, we are putting everything into making it right in the next weeks. We will bounce back together and achieve our aims this season."

Manchester United fans would be hoping nothing else could go wrong following their 7-0 defeat to Liverpool.

However, Erik ten Hag’s side could reportedly be without midfield star Casemiro for the Europa League clash against Real Betis.

The Brazilian has been a hugely influential signing for United since he arrived in the summer from Real Madrid.

He has scored five and assisted five in all competitions so far this season, transforming their midfield.

Casemiro started in the heavy defeat away at Liverpool on Sunday but was replaced by Marcel Sabitzer late on after a poor display from the defensive midfielder in which he was totally overwhelmed.

And as reported by ESPN, the 31-year-old picked up an injury at Anfield as United fell to their heaviest ever loss in the Premier League.

Medical staff at the club will assess him ahead of Thursday’s game against Betis at Old Trafford.

His absence could be a blow to the side as they look to build upon their Carabao Cup success.

The Brazilian was substituted late on and could miss United’s next match

United had to go through the Europa League knockout play-offs to reach the Round of 16.

They beat European giants Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate to set up a tie against fellow La Liga outfit Betis.

Ten Hag’s side, who last won the competition in 2017, are one of the favourites to go all the way this season.

Should Casemiro be fit to to play, he would provide a huge boost to the side’s European hopes.

However, United have plenty of quality in their ranks to overcome Betis without him as they chase even more silverware this season.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says captain Bruno Fernandes is an "inspiration to the team" after his attitude was criticised in the 7-0 Premier League defeat by Liverpool.

A visibly frustrated Fernandes appeared to push the referee's assistant in the 81st minute at Anfield.

Ten Hag said Portugal midfielder Fernandes will remain captain despite calls for him to lose the armband.

"He is playing a brilliant season," said Ten Hag.

"He has played a big role in us being where we are. Everyone makes mistakes and we learn. I have to learn and he will as well.

"He is intelligent. I'm really pleased he is our player and he is captain when Harry (Maguire) is not playing."

Former United captain Gary Neville said Fernandes' behaviour was "embarrassing" and ex-Blackburn striker Chris Sutton said United had "people far better qualified to be captain".

The defeat was United's joint-heaviest in a competitive game, while victory was Liverpool's biggest against their rivals.

United conceded six goals in the second half and Ten Hag said after the match that his side were "unprofessional" and "lost our heads".

Anfield is always a factor esp against Utd. I remember for many years Utd had a league wining team under Fergie but we still gave them a good game at Anfield, not losing many at all and winning some.

I think the LFC players were passionate. Last season being 2 goals away from the Quadruple. This season nowhere near the same team due to mental fatigue, team in transition, injuries etc. However the Liverpool first XI is far superiour than the Utd XI. Utd were bragging after winning the league cup and beating Barca, they never expected LFC to flying.

The 2nd half was like watching LFC v a League 1 team. LFC players were just too strong, too fast, too smart for the Utd players. Many are saying its a freak result etc but it was always on the cards for me.

Manchester United officials have begun a round of presentations to potential investors.

The leading candidates, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim, are due to send representatives to Manchester next week.

However, others, who are either offering to fund any purchase of United or redevelopment of Old Trafford or the club's Carrington training ground, are first in line.

It is understood there will be potential investors at tonight's game, potentially from the Elliott Investment Management group, who formerly owned AC Milan and are willing to provide funding around United rather than buy into the club itself.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag hailed goalscoring skipper Bruno Fernandes as the star man in his side's Europa League last-16 first-leg victory against Real Betis.

It was a bad loss for us, but we are still having a better season than Liverpool. We have won a trophy, could win another couple and will likely finish in the top four. Liverpool might finish in the tour four but they ain’t winning nothing this season. All you Liverpool gloating were crying after Madrid battered you at Anfield a couple of weeks ago. :)))

Liverpool’s starting XI isn’t far superior to Man United starting XI. What a load of nonsense.

If we go player by player:
GK: Alison is better than De Gea, though DDG is a better shot stoper.
RB: Fraudexander Arnold who can’t even defend and he is a right back. The most overrated right back I have ever seen. I am taking Dalot or AWB over him.
CB: Fraud Dyke who won one premier league and he is the greatest cb in premier league history. :misbah
Varane is clear of the fraud, as is Lisandro Martinez of Gomez, Matip and always injured Konate.
LB: Robertson gets the edge here.
Midfield: Casemiro is better than all of your midfielders combined. You think bums like Henderson, Keira, Elliot are better than Case.
Fernandes has more creativity in his little toe than all of your midfielders combined.
The only Liverpool midfielder I would take at Man united is Thiago.
RW: Mohammed Santa gets in.
ST: Nunez gets the edge.
LW: Rashford is better than bum Diaz or Gapko.

All in your dream land is Liverpool’s starting XI miles better than Man United’s starting XI.

And to answer your question, I didn’t watch the match, as I was in Pakistan having the time of my life.

Man Utd bidder threatens to ‘walk away’ as ultimatum is given to Glazer family amid fresh ‘concern’

Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani is reportedly willing to ‘walk away’ from his bid to buy Man Utd if the price of the proposed takeover ‘is not right’.

At the end of last week, it was reported that Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have moved to the next stage of the takeover process.

Despite this, it was claimed on Thursday morning the Glazer family were plotting a ‘massive U-turn’ and they could be ready to take Man Utd off the market as they look to make money from the club’s worldwide fanbase.

The Glazer family are understood to be asking for £6bn to accept a full sale. Sky Sports are reporting that Sheikh Jassim ‘values the club at about £4.5bn’ and he ‘will not overpay’.

The report adds ‘there is a general acceptance that whoever buys United will have to overpay but that does not mean Sheikh Jassim will be reckless’.

Sheikh Jassim has been ‘offered other clubs’ but he has ‘only ever been interested in buying Man Utd’. But it is insisted that he has ‘no interest in a minority investment’.

The report adds: ‘At least three bidders for United have been invited to Manchester over the next fortnight for presentations, meetings and access to detailed financial information about the club.

‘A delegation representing Sheikh Jassim and the other leading bidder Sir Jim Ratcliffe are expected at Old Trafford next week.

‘Some of the bidders had been expecting to have been granted exclusivity by this stage. There are concerns Glazers are trying to use minority bidders to drive up the sale price or that they do not want to sell the club.’

Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol adds that the Glazer family should be wary that Man Utd’s value will decrease if they do not sell now.

“For the Glazers, the club effectively belongs to them, they have total control almost of the club and if they do not want to sell they don’t have to.

“But they only ever put £200m of their own money into the club and you are going from turning that into £4.5bn or £5bn – a lot of people would say, ‘take the money now, how much more do you want to put up with fan protests? You would have made an incredible return on your investment’.”

“The other problem is if the Glazers don’t sell now, what is going to happen to Man Utd’s share price? Ever since they came out in November and said they were looking at alternative strategies which could lead to the club being sold, the share price has doubled.

So if they were now to turn around and take the club off the market and stay, that effectively could mean that instead of having a club worth £4.5bn or £5bn, they would maybe have a club that is back to being worth £2.5bn.”

I have also seen Man United win 7 premier league titles.

I wonder how many you have seen your team win?

I am an absolute NOOB in terms if football. All I know is world cups end euro cups. In regards to league football at most I know names of Bayern München, Barcelona & Real Madrid. No clue about premier league.

Currently on a short stay in UK and I happened to watch a football game featuring ManU in Manchester. It was my first ever live game and the atmosphere was epic. I loved it. Going in to the game I didn’t know the name of a single player. But when the crowd was shouting “Bruno” I was shouting with them and went home knowing 1 player from the team.

I got 0 clue about the rivalry but ManU will have special place in my heart now thanks to the epic experience. Everyone seemed peaceful and friendly

7 also, one more and we will have 7 champions league wins too. :)))

Now that you are rubbing into the face of ManU fans I might watch a Liverpool match as a comparison.

Whats the best way to buy a ticket if I want to watch a Liverpool match? I might consider watching one, especially since I got sympathy for Mo Salah

An incredible title charge from United, almost record-breakingly short :))

An incredible title charge from United, almost record-breakingly short :))

You support Arsenal. Arteta finished 8th in his first two seasons. Ten Hag in his first season will finish in the top four. He is already ahead of Arteta in his development as Man United manager.

No Man United fan said they were in a title race. It’s Arsenal fans like you who put us in a title race, because when you bottle the title race, you want to be able to say that Man City beat both Arsenal and Man United to the title.

I hate these referees. Casemiro gets a red card when Felix yesterday and Pope today get away with red. What the hell is the consistency? We also should have had a stonewall penalty for handball.

Honestly, the referees in the premier league can go to hell!

Casemiro was a red card though

I do agree there is a consistency issue but because other bad decisions were made doesn't mean that Casemiro shouldn't have been sent off

I haven't see the handball incident yet so can't comment on that

You support Arsenal. Arteta finished 8th in his first two seasons. Ten Hag in his first season will finish in the top four. He is already ahead of Arteta in his development as Man United manager.

Ten Hag in his first transfer window spent as much as Arteta did in his first 5. Arteta took over, halfway through the season, a team of mercenaries in free fall down the table and still won a domestic trophy just like Ten Hag, except we did it vs City and Chelsea, not Newcastle and Forest.

I like Ten Hag and think he's doing a good job as I've said on here, but at the moment there's not a comparison to be made.

No Man United fan said they were in a title race. It’s Arsenal fans like you who put us in a title race, because when you bottle the title race, you want to be able to say that Man City beat both Arsenal and Man United to the title.

Nothing to do with Arsenal fans lol, none of us have ever considered you guys a threat this season. It's your boys in the media that have drummed it up. Keane saying United are in the title race and Neville saying they'll finish above Arsenal :))

You support Arsenal. Arteta finished 8th in his first two seasons. Ten Hag in his first season will finish in the top four.

Man U have spent in excess of £1bn in the last 10 years. So ETH had a head start if we're comparing how they fared in their first season with their respective clubs.

He is already ahead of Arteta in his development as Man United manager

What you conveniently also forget to mention is ETH has been a football manager for over 10 years. Arteta has been coaching Arsenal for 4 years.

ETH is a good coach but to suggest he's ahead of Arteta in his development is delusional.

Casemiro was a red card though

I do agree there is a consistency issue but because other bad decisions were made doesn't mean that Casemiro shouldn't have been sent off

I haven't see the handball incident yet so can't comment on that

I don’t disagree that Casemiro wasn’t a red. It was and he was silly for making that sort of tackle.

But the thing that infuriates me is the consistency. Another such incident won’t even result in a yellow card. The referees have to be consistent across the board.

Casemiro: Manchester United decide not to appeal against red card

Manchester United have decided not to appeal against the red card shown to Brazil midfielder Casemiro in Sunday's 0-0 draw with Southampton.

Referee Anthony Taylor initially booked Casemiro for a tackle on Carlos Alcaraz, but then sent him off after going to the television monitor on the advice of the video assistant referee.

United believed there was little chance of the decision being overturned.

Casemiro will now serve an immediate four-match domestic suspension.

The additional game comes because it was his second dismissal of the season, following a red card against Crystal Palace in February.

He will miss the FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham and Premier League games against Newcastle United, Brentford and Everton.

"Casemiro is across European leagues, in over 500 games he had never a red card and now he has twice," United manager Erik ten Hag said after the Southampton game.

"He plays tough but he plays fair, also in this he is playing fair. Same as against Palace, so it is very debatable.

"When you freeze it looks bad, but everyone who knows something about football, who is acting on top football, they know what is bad and what isn't bad, what is fair.

"I tell you, Casemiro is a really fair player. Tough but fair and it shows over 500 games in big leagues, never sent off."

Defender Raphael Varane added: "He's a player who's very important for us.

"He brings balance to the team and to the squad, but we have a great squad and we have to find another balance without him.

"But we have good players in every position on the pitch and we're ready for the next games.

"I think he was very disappointed because nobody wants to get out of the pitch before the end but as I say it's part of football."

Its very difficult, you will need to know a season ticket holder or go for hospitality.

If you want to check out Anfield esp at a cheap rate, the Legends match is on this Saturday. Im sure tickets are still available to the public.

Man U have spent in excess of £1bn in the last 10 years. So ETH had a head start if we're comparing how they fared in their first season with their respective clubs.

Did Ten Hag spend all that money? No.

The money hasn't been spent wisely. Ten Hag doesn't even have a striker to pick from. He has done remarkably well to be in the top 4 and win a trophy in his first season, despite a lack of a proper number 9.

Arteta finished 8th in his first two seasons, despite having Aubameyang who was still scoring goals at the time.

ETH is a good coach but to suggest he's ahead of Arteta in his development is delusional.

It isn't delusional. You just need to compare Man United in ETH's first season and Arsenal in Arteta's first season.

Like I said I rate ETH but to suggest he's ahead of Arteta in development is delusional and suggests to me that you weren't even aware of the fact that your manager has been managing football teams for a decade.

Arteta on the other hand doesn't even have half of his managerial experience.

Marcus Rashford: Man Utd forward praised by Erik ten Hag after surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo record

Erik ten Hag praised Marcus Rashford's belief and focus as he struck his 30th goal of the season for club and country to surpass Cristiano Ronaldo's European goalscoring tally for Manchester United.

Rashford's long-range stunner sealed a 1-0 win for United at Real Betis as Ten Hag's side progressed to the Europa League quarter-finals with a 5-1 aggregate victory.

The 25-year-old stepped up after Ronaldo's contract was mutually terminated during the World Cup, scoring 19 goals in 24 games for his club post-Qatar, and has now overtaken his former team-mate to become United's sixth-highest scorer in European football (25).

Ten Hag was pleased to see Rashford brush off his mistake after missing a glorious chance just moments before his swerving strike sealed the win for United on Thursday night in Spain as he backed his top scorer to keep finding the back of the net.

"The team was creating some chances," Ten Hag said. "Rashy had some chances before and he missed some but he kept his belief, he kept trying, and got his reward.

"All good strikers know that not every chance you will get a goal but at this level, you don't create five or six chances in a game so one of the two has to be in."

Asked about Rashford's form, Ten Hag added: "(His form) tells you something about the team's performance. It tells you something about him.

"If he keeps the focus, and makes sure he has the energy, the way, and the way he has to play in that system and style, he will get in scoring positions and then it's about him, he has the ability to finish."

Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani would now be "willing to overpay" for Manchester United with a figure closer to the Glazers' £6bn price tag and will make a second bid for the club next week.
