What's new

Manchester United 2025/2026 Season

It seems it doesn’t matter who plays for Utd they perform badly for the most part . Onana is a no really no different to others . It’s gone past managers and players , club is run poorly . Radcliffe is clueless about football . Qataris may still buy but until then it’s a long long road . It’s a shame I’d love a Liverpool v Utd rivalry but instead another Manchester team took over and now it’s some London club who won nothing but are taking over the plants like champions
If the Qataris had come in, they would have cleared all of the debt, they would have reset the entire culture of the club, and Man United would be in a much better place. But all of these loser Man United fans, especially the top Reds, cried about human rights and instead wanted RATcliffe. I hope they are happy now.

Whilst I don't rate Ole, he was done dirty by having Ronaldo thrust on to him

He was actually building a half decent side, that signing just put them backwards
Ole was never going to win anything as a manager, but I must admit that we played the best football under Ole in the post-Sir Alex era. I genuinely enjoyed watching Man United play during the 2019-20 & 2020-21 seasons. Then Ronaldo came, and everything went downhill.

Come on Burnley, Uniteds 2nd goal was offside and should have been disallowed

We dominated. Should have been out of sight by half time.

Definitely better than What Newcastle Falcons served up last Monday. Lol

Don't fall for the media narrative, we were the better side, despite having a man less for the majority of the game

We played as many long balls as Liverpool did, whereas some would think we were launching it forward whilst it was carpet football from Liverpool, that was not the case

Though, today the performance was horrific, such a turgid game

Newcastle drew against Leeds today. This should never be acceptable. Newcastle are much better than that.

Haven’t seen the match or highlights so don’t know what transpired but 0-0 is not looking good.

United have games vs Sunderland and Brentford in the next 5 games. If they play like they did vs Burnley, they Will lose these games to other relegation rivals.

If our level of Performance is similar to the one against Arsenal. We have nothing to worry about.

Man Utd's vital win can't mask urgent goalkeeping issues

Ruben Amorim finally had something to celebrate at the end of a turbulent few days at Manchester United.

He didn't actually see Bruno Fernandes' decisive stoppage-time penalty because he wanted to "watch the fans celebrate" as he was convinced his captain would score.

It was one of Amorim's more rational statements in a week when he seemed to be adopting a scorched earth policy - such is the rollercoaster his emotional state has been.

However, when he takes a step back, the last-gasp 3-2 win over Burnley has left him with plenty of puzzles to solve and issues to deal with - and some are quite pressing.

Goalkeeping problems

Amorim gave the game away as he explained the difficulties his side were having in the opening weeks of the new campaign.

"We are in a moment where, with every possession near our box, they can score," he reflected.

This is clearly not a great situation to be in, but one of the reasons for it is his goalkeepers keep making big mistakes.

On the opening weekend, it was Altay Bayindir's failure to get clean contact on his attempt to punch Declan Rice's corner away from danger that led to United losing against Arsenal.

In midweek, United were already behind when Andre Onana failed to get a Grimsby corner away from his six-yard box, which led to a second goal for the hosts as the Old Trafford outfit slithered to their first defeat by a fourth-tier team.

Bayindir returned against Burnley, and duly failed to gather Loum Tchaouna's second-half shot, allowing the ball to roll to Jaidon Anthony, who, thanks to two deflections, made the score 2-2.

"I think it is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment," said Amorim.

"They are humans. At Manchester United, everything is in the news.

"Everybody talks about the goalkeeper. I can change the goalkeeper and situations happen. We are in that moment.

"The players are struggling a little bit with all the things around the club. That is normal. It's not just the goalkeepers. I think everybody has to improve."

That is fair. Yet it is also clear if the goalkeepers continue to make mistakes it will have a significant negative impact.

It is surely one of the reasons why United have been talking to Royal Antwerp about their goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who was once again left out of his side's Belgian Pro-League game this afternoon with transfer rumours circling.

Galatasaray have been linked with Lammens and United's keepers, and with the Turkish deadline not closing until 12 September we might have to wait a little while for the goalkeeping situation at Old Trafford to become completely clear.

Lammens wants to join United. Nothing that happened at Old Trafford against Burnley makes his arrival by Monday's 19:00 BST transfer deadline less likely.

Have injuries ended Mainoo's hopes of loan move?

Amorim said he did not know the extent of the injuries that forced Matheus Cunha out of the game after half an hour and Mason Mount at half-time.

Cunha appeared to sustain a hamstring problem as he sprinted upfield and quickly signalled he would not be able to continue.

On Sunday, Brazil confirmed the forward would not be joining up with the squad over the international break following a "conversation" with United's medical department.

Mount did not re-emerge for the second half and Amorim said afterwards the former Chelsea man had been experiencing a problem for 30 minutes before that: "I am concerned about that," he said.

Joshua Zirkzee replaced Cunha and Kobbie Mainoo stepped in for Mount as Fernandes was pushed upfield.

Mainoo has asked to move away from United on loan before the deadline closes and he is not short of options. The question was asked of United again after an initial transfer request was turned down. The second rejection was reinforced by Amorim in his news conference on Friday.

Yet Mainoo still felt the chance to play somewhere else rather than be back-up to Fernandes was more attractive.

Now, with Cunha and Mount potentially sidelined for a period of time, is it realistic to think Amorim would be prepared to release another of his offensive players even if it is still possible he will remain as a back-up?

Sesko situation explained

One of the major talking points at Grimsby was the fact striker Benjamin Sesko took his side's 10th penalty. Only Onana had not taken one before the Slovenia international stepped up.

BBC Sport reported on Thursday Sesko had been suffering from severe cramp.

Amorim confirmed this after the Burnley win, when he also outlined why Sesko remained on the bench when substitutes were needed to replace Cunha and Mount.

Sesko eventually replaced midfielder Casemiro 18 minutes from time.

"It's all connected," said Amorim. "He finished the game [at Grimsby] with cramps and he really was in the limit. That's why we protected Ben from the penalties.

"Today I thought Ben didn't do 90 minutes in pre-season and then did it on Wednesday.

"You don't know if that full game in the middle of the week has something to do with [Cunha's] injury today. With the problem with Mason Mount, I was not risking another player without knowing they are able to play so many minutes."

Amorim taking it a day at a time

Amorim is no longer interested in answering questions about whether his side have 'turned a corner'.

He was happy enough to say he "loved" his players after this performance, 24 hours after outlining his emotions during matches sometimes make him "hate" them, and "feel like quitting".

But he knows it will take more than a nerve-shredding home win against a newly promoted team to convince anyone his methods are starting to work.

He has still never won successive Premier League games, so that would be a start.

The problem is United's next opponents are Manchester City at Etihad Stadium on 14 September.

After that it is Chelsea at Old Trafford and then a trip to Brentford, where they have taken just one point from their last three visits - and twice conceded four goals.

"I'm not thinking about a turning point," he said. "I had this conversation with you guys 10 times.

"So I'm not. It's day by day. We have a lot to do but we return a little bit to our level today."

Brajan Gruda came off the bench to score an 89th-minute goal to give Brighton their first win of the Premier League season, while condemning Manchester City to back-to-back defeats.

An important win but I am not getting carried away. It was only Burnley and we needed a dodgy last minute penalty to win it.

It’s the international break so the perfect time to change the manager.

Wrong thread bro but a Man City defeat always brings a smile to my face.

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for an initial 21m euros (£18.1m) plus add-ons.

It brings to an end United's interest in Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Lammens, 23, is travelling to Manchester to sign a five-year contract at the Old Trafford club.

United are keen to address their goalkeeping issues with Turkey's Altay Bayindir making errors in the league and last season's number one Andre Onana at fault for a goal in their EFL Cup exit to League Two side Grimsby.

"I think it is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment," head coach Ruben Amorim said after Saturday's 3-2 league win over Burnley.

United sources say they view Lammens as an exciting young goalkeeper with a bright future.

Who is Senne Lammens?

Lammens joined Antwerp on a free transfer from Club Brugge in 2023, going on to make 64 appearances for Antwerp and winning the Belgian Super Cup in 2023.

The Belgian youth international is yet to make an appearance for the country's senior team but received his first call-up in March 2025 and is seen as long-term replacement for Thibaut Courtois.

Last season, Lammens made 30 appearances in the Belgian Pro League and kept seven clean sheets.

Prior to a deal being agreed, Lammens had been left out of the Antwerp squad for back-to-back Belgian Pro-League games against KV Mechelen and KVC Westerlo.

One of the very many issues hopefully rectified.

Keepers can make costly errors, the nature of their game but Onana just seems pretty dim, lacking in basic awareness and intelligence.

This new chap needs to get through a few matches without a mistake, it will then take off all the pressure.

Don't know anything about this Lammens guy, but he can't be any worse than Onana.

Every goalkeeper makes mistakes. The good ones just make fewer errors than the crap ones. As long as Lammens doesn't make an error literally every other match, he is already a big upgrade over Onana.

Return of club football after boring international break.

We got Man City on the weekend. I actually think we can get something, as Man City aren't what they used to be and we seem to do alright against them. Even under Amorim, we beat them last season. Having said all that, I won't be surprised if Man City batter us 5-0. :ROFLMAO:

Onana finally gone. To a turkish league team and not one of the more famous ones. Must feel strange going from Ajax, to inter to man united and then find yourself in turkey when it’s the years you should be in your prime. No disrespect to the Turkish league. It’s like in the space of the year you went from being considered one of the top goalkeepers in Europe with inter to struggling to find another team to take you in Europe.

He looked technically bad at man united. But I can’t believe he’s that bad if he has succeeded at Ajax and inter. And no one saw his problems then. Sometimes I think the pressure of man united gets to people, they totally lose it. Maybe similar to Maguire who looked awful at the beginning but clearly wasn’t (and hasn’t been awful in recent years), though Onana has been a level worse than that.

Man United continues to feel like a poisoned chalice for managers and players who go there and have their career nosedive during and after the experience. If you’re a successful upcoming or established player it doesn’t make sense to go to man united if there are other teams on a similar performance level or better. Maybe the money is better, but the risk to your long term career isn’t worth it. Obviously this won’t be forever, some coach and players will eventually fix and stabilise the club. But you wonder what managers and players unfortunately have their career ruined in a failed attempt at doing so. I think man united have done well to get guys like Mbeumo and Cunha who are premier league proven and will bolster the strength instantly. But I do worry that some of the younger players like Sesko and Lammens etc. might struggle being in both an unfamiliar league without the right environment to support their development.

The first time I saw Onana, it was clear this guy is a bum. He will never play for Utd again.

Recent Utd managers have made desperate signings instead of waiting for the right player. Amorim has done something similar and must train his players to perform.

Utd have a chance to beat City at the weekend but this match could go either way.

Onana is technically a bad keeper. The way he dives, the way he save shots doesn't look right. His fundamentals are poor.

Had he gone to a team like Man City, who are experts at playing out from the back and dominating possession, his glaring weaknesses wouldn't have been exposed as much. But at Man United, who aren't great at dominating possession and don't have the players or the right system to play out from the back, Onana was always going to get exposed, as a poor shot stopper that he is.

In hindsight, replacing De Gea, who was and is still a great shot stopper, with Onana was a big mistake. De Gea was perfect for us.

Good Riddance. Defence will never build confidence as long as this clown 🤡 was in nets.

Hopefully, the new GK performs better, and builds a solid chemistry with our defence.

@The_KING @aboveandbeyond Predictions for the big derby on Sunday? Confident of not losing or perhaps you can win it?
We seem to have done alright against Man City in recent years, and even under Amorim last season, we beat them at the Etihad. And Man City have declined since the treble season, so I won't be surprised if we beat them or at least get a draw, but I also won't be surprised if they batter us 5-0.

Yep, this is nearly impossible to call lol.

Cunha is injured? I think if Utd can keep it tight at the back, you will score. A draw looks a decent pick if I had to pick.

Cunha is injured, yes.

Hopefully, with Lamens in goal, the defence will look stronger and we will keep it tight at the back.

Game of the weekend. I am so looking forward to this.

I don’t know how city have played this season but know they added firepower in the summer.

United fans are on a roll with that win against Burnley. Love it.

Excellent post. Utd’s problems go deeper than that unfortunately. Even if Utd continue to play like this top players would still want to come to utd. It’s because of utd’s legacy as well as their financial resources. That’s all good. Utd’s problem is that they fired their managers at the wrong time and went for players at the wrong time. That suggests poor decision making at the top level.

Examples:
Firing Ten Hag and getting Amorim well into new season and being affected by fan sentiment after FA cup win when the decision to fire ten Haag had already been made.

Getting Ronaldo in out of nowhere to chase some nostalgic dream of the fan base and then the same fan base turning on him preferring rashford/bruno/elanga over him.

The kind of success utd fans want takes years to achieve and it’s not due to them just because they are utd. Amorim has some pretty annoying bits about him but now that he’s been appointed, he should be persisted with at least 4-5 years. Otherwise the clock will keep on restarting.

Starting XI vs Manchester City: Bayindir, Yoro, De Ligt, Shaw, Mazraoui, Ugarte, Fernandes, Dorgu, Amad, Mbeumo, Sesko

Amorim on sack watch, surely. There isn’t any improvement in spite of spending big money.

They are on course for another bottom-half finish.

It’s going to cost him, it’s ridiculous. I think Sir Jim likes him, hopefully he’s gone pretty soon and not ruin the whole season. Not one positive in the time he’s been here. Get Ole back lol

This may sound delusional. But I dont think UTD have been as bad as our league position. At the moment fine details and unforced errors is costing us.

Was the case against Arsenal in first game of the season, and Today again unforced errors by Luke Shaw in both Haalands Goals

That is part of what makes United so poor. No team makes so many individual errors so consistently.

You also wasted money on Sesko who isn’t what you needed especially after signing Cunha and Maulvi. The recruitment/squad building has been awful.

Needs to be given time. The guy had No Pre season at all. Which clearly shows

3-0 it finished. Love following utd.

Seriously, long way to go before utd reach any consistency. Sit back and relax. It takes years.

City away is never easy. Until Fodens goal, Utd were pretty solid with the defence and mid close to each other. A bit of a brainfade to allow Foden an open goal but after this they had to open up which made it easy for City to play lovely football.

Amorim is becoming arrogant, should be playing Mainoo in mid but has decided he prefers others. Unless he changes his attitude understanding the players he has available, he will be another sacking ...very soon too.

He still doesn't have enough players to fit his system. It's going to cost a lot of money and time to do it. And even lets say they finally do this, it could all be a waste as the manager might not be good enough or this formation doesn't work in Premier League. And its not like he can adapt, he already proved that with a 15th position finish, and his side wasn't even wrecked with injuries like Spurs.

I honestly don't know what Man united were thinking appointing him as manager in the state they were in. They needed someone else to drag them out of the hole Ten Hag placed the team in. It's like skipping the middle stage.

I'm starting to believe in theory his system can sort of work. I don't know if its good enough to win premier league or not. But it can work to an extent. You can see the players he has cant implement it/suit it. But I also believe he probably needs another few hundred million to even get to that stage. So what is the point. And this manager isn't going to get you decent results while he builds the side, it'll be low table/mid table finishes with no European football. Which of course makes it even harder to build a squad.

How fatty Luke Shaw is still a player for Manchester United, let alone starting games in 2025 is beyond me? This clown should have been sold in 2018, when Mourinho called him out.

If there is one player who sums up Man United post-Fergie, it is Luke Shaw. He is ****. The worst thing is that you got Man United fans, especially the ones on YouTube with big fan followings like Mark Goldbridge, who rate this clown and brainwash the fans into accepting mediocrity.

Amorim needs to get the sack. His system is never going to work in the Premier League, and he is too much of an idiot to change it. On paper, this isn't a bad Man United team, it's not amazing, but certainly good enough to finish inside the top 5 with the right manager. Jim Ratcliffe, the fossil, needs to do the right thing and sack Amorim already.

Who’s gonna sack Ratcliffe?

If I recall correctly Amorim was selected after a comprehensive selection process. He was all but confirmed when ten Hag won the FA cup and then utd took a two-step 360 degree turn by first keeping Eric and then sacking him a few weeks into next season and forcing Amorim to start middle of the season. He’s still coming out of that trauma.

He can win give him time at least till end of next season after he’s been already allowed money to spend. Getting back to top 4 from here will be at least a 2-3 season journey for any team and any manager.

I think a system not working is not black and white but it can work to a degree.

The degree to which it works, let’s say CL qualification and a good cup run for now, needs to be level set with fans and ownership. Things take time.

Ratcliffe is a fraud of the highest order. Man United fans wanted this clown over Qatari ownership lol.

I am not expecting top 4 this season or even next season, but is top 6 too much to ask for, especially for a team that has spent over 200 million on attacking players in the summer, and yet they can't score a goal?

At this point, we are better off getting Ole back until the end of the season.

Amorim has a template and he’s building towards that. Maybe it’s not good enough for utd to make them top 6 this year but I think expectations have to be realistic.

Look what everybody is spending in PL. It’s a difficult league and a new league for him. He can get utd to a certain level but fans will need to be on board for a rough ride.

I’d say ride this out with him, enjoy the process, otherwise it gets frustrating.

I survived Arsenal’s misery years and I can tell you it can take years to reverse fortunes for a club. Consistency of policies and patience with results will be key for utd going forward.

There are rumours that Amorim will be given the Benfica job and will take it. That honestly would be hilarious if just dipped like that after taking them to 15th 😂. Not even getting sacked just ditching it because he wants to work somewhere else.

I can’t seriously think he’d take the job despite how much he moans. Surely he toughs it out and tries his best at United. But It’d be so funny on the small chance that actually happened.

There is nothing to enjoy. Minus the relegated sides, we are factually the worst side in the Premier League since Amorim's arrival. I get that the manager needs time, but to give the manager time, you need to see some positive signs and it has been anything but positive since Amorim took over.

Arsenal's misery years were still miles better than Man United's current misery. You guys were still regularly qualifying for Europe.

Today was a fun chaotic game. Lol pre-match Amorim joked Ratcliffe was there to give him an extension 😂 and that he woudnt change tactics even if the pope told him to lol. Bruno and casemiro exploited well the sub gk’s weak positioning and movement to score their goals.

When will £18m Lammens get his chance at Man Utd?

Senne Lammens' will-he, won't-he move to Manchester United was one of the more intriguing deals on transfer deadline day.

Lammens had been identified as a goalkeeper of interest by United early in the window and although their interest intensified in the final week, it was not until deadline day itself the Premier League club made their move.

By that time, the 23-year-old Royal Antwerp player was on his way to England anyway, making sure he was in the right place 'just in case' an agreement was reached.

The deal was eventually announced at 10pm, five hours after the window closed and long after Aston Villa's World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez had given up on his own dreams of securing a move to Old Trafford, having also been put on red alert by United's renewed interest in him.

Lammens described his £18.1m switch as "a dream come true". He also said he hoped it would be the "beginning of something special".

Three weeks on, we are still waiting to see Lammens play a game. No-one knows whether head coach Ruben Amorim will give him his Premier League debut at Brentford on Saturday, in the home game against Sunderland on 4 October, or make him wait even longer.

Lammens settling into life at Man Utd

Firstly, there is no sense Lammens has done anything wrong.

Sources say the Belgium Under-21 international has impressed in training and the overall view of him is a positive one.

Lammens is described as having a calm presence, as being mature for his age and is taking his new surroundings in his stride. He has already got somewhere to live, so has stepped out of hotel life, which in itself can be disruptive.

This view is backed up by United's number three goalkeeper Tom Heaton in an interview with the Training Ground Guru podcast: "He has a strong personality.

"His goalkeeping fundamentals are very impressive. I said that to him after a couple of days' training. He's been very impressive so far."

Around his signing in preference to Martinez, United sources were keen to stress he had been bought with an eye on the future.

His stats were good. Last season, Lammens made 30 appearances in the Belgian Pro League, keeping seven clean sheets and making 173 saves, which was 20 more than any other goalkeeper in Europe's top-10 leagues, while no player saved more penalties than his four.

Data analysts Opta said Lammens had a save percentage of 77.4% and a passing accuracy of 71.5%. They also said his 'goals prevented' total was 18.4.

"Senne is young and has a big frame," said former Belgium and Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld. "He'll be a perfect fit in England."

There was uncertainty over whether Lammens, with just a single full season as a number one goalkeeper and 57 senior appearances behind him, would be pitched straight into the United first team in the white-hot atmosphere of a Manchester derby on 14 September.

He wasn't, with Amorim explaining why in his news conference a couple of days earlier.

"He has a lot of potential but we also have to look at the present and we are in a moment that the goalkeeper needs to be really strong and have a lot of experience," he said.

"It is a different league, different country, different ball."

Turkey international Altay Bayindir, who had started six of the previous seven Premier League games and all three this season, retained his place at the Etihad Stadium, a 3-0 defeat, and kept it for the victory over Chelsea on 20 September, when the visitors had just one effort on target, Trevoh Chalobah's 80th-minute header into the corner that gave the keeper no chance.

Although Amorim has said Bayindir and Lammens will compete for the number one spot, few think the former Fenerbahce man, who cost United £4.3m in 2023, is capable of filling the role on a full-time basis.

According to Opta, of the goalkeepers with more than two Premier League appearances this season, Bayindir ranks 16th in terms of save percentage (50%). His mistakes in the home games against Arsenal and Burnley mean he has conceded eight goals this season, more than his expected goals conceded figure of 7.14, putting him 17th in the list and a long way behind the leader in that metric, Fulham's Bernd Leno, who has conceded 2.15 goals fewer than he should.

Bayindir is 17th in terms of passing accuracy and 18th for long pass accuracy.

All of these numbers very much lead towards the theory it is a question of when, not if, Lammens gets his chance.

Yet, having elected to keep his new arrival out of the firing line so far, Amorim has to be careful when choosing the right day as a poor performance could set Lammens back.

The selection issue has been made more tricky by United's elimination from the EFL Cup at League Two Grimsby before Lammens had even arrived.

It means there is no 'soft landing' available in a lesser competition, when the consequences for immediate mistakes in the assimilation period would not be quite so great.

United opted against naming Lammens as an overage player in the Premier League International Cup game at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

While it would be unusual for someone bedded into the first-team squad to feature in a game primarily for Travis Binnion's Under-21 squad, it would at least have given Lammens a taste of playing under floodlights at the main stadium.

Although the attendance of 1,600 was a fraction of what the first team get, it is not far off the crowd of 6,456 who saw Lammens' last senior game, in the Belgian Pro-League for Royal Antwerp at Charleroi.

So, unless he is made to wait until United begin their FA Cup campaign in January, it now seems Lammens will make his next competitive appearance in the Premier League, when the opposition manager will need little invitation to target a rookie.

Former United goalkeeper Roy Carroll has cautioned against expecting too much too soon.

"He's only 23, please, please give him time and let him grow as a Manchester United goalkeeper," the Northern Irishman told BBC Sport.

"We did it for David de Gea when he came in. He was a very young goalkeeper and a successful one even before he came to Manchester United as well.

"Time is a precious commodity but we need to give it. Every goalkeeper makes mistakes, the key is not to make too many."

I don't understand signing a goalkeeper and still playing Bayindir, who is a liability. Lammens needs to get his chance against Brentford.

Why. A top 10 finish is satisfactory finish for UTD.
The team is better than that even before the new spending. Amorim has brought this team down to the gutter at 15th and now 10th is an improvement.

I think Europa conference should be absolute minimum.

He still might get that but it looks like a team and squad handicapped by a manager. Some of the players are actually decent.

7 points flatters them they’ve been far worse that that. Without a red card and Chelsea taking off their best players. Fulham they could have lost. They nearly didn’t even beat Burnley until last minute. Just a bunch of luck that’s gone Amorim’s way. They could quite easily be on three points.

Football isn't played on "ifs and buts"

Truly shocking lol. Surely he has to go.
I believe in giving managers time. Amorim can take utd to a top 6 finish (he has more than enough quality in the squad) cunha, sesko, mbuemo sounded like the most exciting attacking trio before the season started.

He took Utd to the Europa league final so a fa cup win might also be on the cards. That’s not enough for Utd but any recovery from here is going to be a multi-year project for any manager. If Amorim has been given the kitty to spend now he should now be given time to implement his vision too imo.

He’s 14th right now and 15th last season. He’s lost to Grimsby on top. And I think he’s been lucky this season. Even if you go on pure results it’s difficult to back someone with those sort of results.

I was up for giving him time but I don’t think it’s going anywhere. These new additions look promising but they look handicapped by the manager’s tactics. I don’t see how it’s going to work out in the long term.

The squad is decent. The new additions are generally good. It kind of highlights how bad Amorim’s been.

It’s the manager right now whose system isn’t working with the players. He’s already been given a lot to spend and on these sort of results with man united playing like this it’s difficult to justify backing him and much easier to cut losses now and give the money to a new manager.

Managers should be given time but there are limits. I don’t think any of the other biggest clubs would have kept him after last season’s performance. United again look bad to start with again. I feel he’s lost the dressing room too. He needed to start the ground running but he hasn’t. It seems more logical to cut losses now and back the new manager financially. Amorim’s done literally nothing to justify being backed financially like he has let alone to continue to back him.

I was up for giving him time but they look so bad. I honestly don’t think he’ll keep his job for much longer anyway.

A couple of questions for you out of curiosity.

What was your initial reaction to Amorim’s appointment, were you initially excited about him and then surprised how bad he was or were you skeptical from the beginning? Trying to understand if the utd faithful ever trusted this guy.

Also I can tell from your posts (including on cricket) you have a methodical way of thinking. So would you not agree that Utd have been sacking managers at the wrong time? Isn’t part of the problem that amorim was forced to quit sporting mid season and ten hag should have been sacked either before the season started or after? And that the one club which has managed to turn fortunes around over time i.e., Arsenal was only able to do so by allowing the manager time.

There are generally no shortcuts to success but totally get that you have made your mind about Amorim that he’s never going to be the guy for utd so better cut losses now. Even in that case a comprehensive managerial search should be concluded in the summer. A mid-season sacking is likely to serve no good purpose imo.

Amorim has proved nothing positive so far. On the other hand he has proved many negative things. He has already proven he is an inflexible manager already. He has underperformed with his squad no matter how bad it is it’s not 15th. He also has man managed his players badly with fallouts, calling his team/squad terrible in the media (which I doubt is good for morale and confidence), and it doesn’t seem players are really trying for him.

Most managers show some sort of promise before getting backed. Amorim has shown none. And yet still board backed him hugely financially, hoping he would start next season strong.

This is not the case and his early season looks more of the same.

Thus yet again the board will be in a position where they will have to back the manager further financially without any promise further down the line. It may never end they may be funnelling money into a system which will never work.

And as seen with ten hag, backing a manager can be dangerous. You can ruin a squad and have players which the next manager can not use.

Worst still Amorim plays a rather unique system for premier league. Which increases the chance that players bought may not fit the next managers system if the system is different. Which it almost certainly will be.

Arteta wasn’t instantly financially backed. He had to prove himself initially. Had he finished 15th he’d have been sacked. Amorim has yet to prove his system can even work in the premier league yet. I’m also not sure there has been worse performance by a manager relative to cost and strength of squad. It is like he is breaking records in the worst way. It is very arguable that you could make a case he was the absolute worst premier league manager last season.

Usually you are right mid seasons sackings are not wise. But there are a few differences in this case. He is making the squad even worse than it was before he came and the longer he stays the more difficult he will make things for his successor. As I said I don’t think it’s if he will get sacked, I already think it’s a matter of time. From the way he talks I wouldn’t even surprised if he wants to be sacked.

It is very unfair to compare him to other previous managers as he is nowhere in the same ballpark of performances. If he were I agree he should be given time. But he isn’t.

His numbers are as you said probably the worst, his media interactions also not great, squad morale not there either, if he’s truly damaging he must be removed.

The timing of ten Hag’s sacking was the number 1 reason Amorim started on a back foot with utd. Amorim was about to be announced he was all but confirmed before ten Hag won the FA cup against City out of nowhere and fan sentiment changed causing utd leadership to reverse their decision and extend ten hag, only to sack him mid-season. Amorim had to quit mid-season his job after telling sporting he was staying. That damaged Amorim’s legacy at sporting (he had one there) and he had to hit the ground running in epl. My generous opinion is that he’s still recovering from that. If he’d won the final last year I am sure he’d have much more longer rope from fans.

In my opinion, the right decision for utd would be to not sack another manager mid-season. Wait till the summer now even if he has to go.

Man Utd weren't performing miracles with a Back 4 but they still finished 8th and won the FA Cup under Ten Hag. Under other managers, who were deemed failures, they were still qualifying for CL and contending for silverware.

This system has seen Man Utd sink to depths not seen in decades. It's almost relegation form with 1 PPG under Amorim.

It hasn't tightened them up defensively even with the extra man at the back, and stifles them offensively. 433 or 4231 would allow Bruno to play as a 10, as opposed to a midfield two where he's exposed defensively. It'd also allow Utd to play with proper wingers as per their tradition.

I'll be surprised if Amorim stays after the Oct international break.
