KARACHI: Karachi Whites begin their title quest when they face former champions Faisalabad in their opening game of the Cool and Cool National T20 Cup at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi, on Saturday (today).

Karachi Whites will be looking to keep the title with the port city as Karachi Blues lifted crown of the last edition held at Multan after beating Karachi Whites by three runs.However, Karachi Blues failed to make it for this event after they failed to perform well in the previous first-class season. They were demoted to second-tier cricket.

Karachi Whites reached Rawalpindi on Friday and their coach Salim Jaffar said that all the players were fit and available for the Saturday’s showdown. “Yes, all the players are well and ready for tomorrow game,” Salim told ‘The News’ from Islamabad Airport.

He said that his side could be rated as hot favourites for the eight-team campaign. “We are a good side and I have faith in my players and you can expect title from this team,” said Salim, a former left-arm Test pacer.

As per the squads unveiled by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday, Karachi Whites carry some fine players. Led by Sarfraz Ahmed, Karachi Whites also have Asad Shafiq, Anwar Ali, Rumman Raees, Khurram Maznoor, Haris Sohail, Akbar-ur-Rehman, Tabish Khan, Mir Hamza and Test left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar.

Karachi has a rich T20 history but the city has won one title so far.Before winning the title last season, Karachi Dolphins had reached final for five times which tells how consistently the team from the biggest city of the country has delivered in the shortest format of the game. Faisalabad also have a few solid players like hard-hitting Sohaib Maqsood, young opener Imran Butt, Khurram Shehzad, Asif Ali, emerging opener Sahibzada Farhan, highly experienced left-handed batsman Ali Waqas, dangerous international all-rounder Faheem Ashraf, Test leg-spinner Yasir Shah and all-rounder Imran Khalid. The game will be supervised by Ghaffar Kazmi and Majid Hussain.

It is pertinent to mention here that the teams had been picked through a draft system on August 10. But some changes later were made due to injuries to some players or their engagement elsewhere.

In the other match of the day, Lahore Blues will meet Lahore Whites at 4pm.Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt will lead Lahore Whites who also have Test discard Kamran Akmal, Umar Akmal, young all-rounders Aamer Yamin and Amad Butt, Wahab Riaz and Ehsan Adil.

Mohammad Hafeez will skipper Lahore Blues who also have Babar Azam, Ahmed Shehzad, Hussain Talat, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Amir and Junaid Khan. This game will be supervised by Imtiaz Iqbal and Faisal Afridi.

Peshawar, Islamabad, FATA and Rawalpindi are the other teams featuring in the competitions. Each team will play seven matches each. The leading four sides at the end of the single league will make it to the semi-finals to be held on November 25. The final will be played on November 26.

Islamabad have made one change with the injured Imad Wasim being replaced by Raza Hasan and Rohail Nazir coming in place of Mohammad Naqash, both under-19 players.Because of the injury to left-arm international pacer Usman Shinwari, FATA have brought in speedster Ahmed Jamad. They have also replaced injured Sohail Akhtar with Shaheen Shah.

The TV coverage is very poor, as usual, at least something is consistent.

I actually agree with their decision. You can’t just walk into the team just because you are young. At some point you have to make those guys worry about their places in the team. You have to earn your place in a side.

By rule they must play 1 emerging player. If every team follow the same trend we would still have Ajmal, Babar, Sami, Anwar etc in our side
 
Gohar Ali delivering phainty to Anwar Ali
 
I have seen Gohar Ali bat a few times in T20s and ODs and he has impressed me every time. Hope he gets selected in PSL. He is far better than Mohammad Rizwan as wk batsman in LO cricket.
 
GoharAli sure to get drafted this year. Local WK batsman already short. 2 teams looking for Wks, even if they go fir foreigners, they would sure need one as a back up.
 
50 of 24 balls from Gohar Ali! The shot he played against Zulfiqar now was really enjoyable

A very tall guy to be a WK, just like Zulqurnain, but he is good.

He is looking decent against spin too. Uses his long levers to play big shots. He definitely deserves selection by some franchise. Is he in the draft ?
 
Sahibzada Farhan is another Ahmed Shehzad in the making. While one batsman is scoring at a strike rate of 200, Farhan is barely able to get to 100 SR.

I have watches him only a couple of times, he plays some good shots but mistimes many as well, mixed bag.
 
These two openers are much much better than the openers playing for for our national T20 team.
 
He was playing so well and then he attempts a stupid reverse sweep. Gone now.
But well played 70!

We need to find some powerhitters for our batting lineup, this tournament is a big opportunity for the likes of Sahibzada Farhan.

Hopefully we see some true pitches in this tournament.
 
Lahore White is full of useless players. Any emerging player? Hasan Khan is with U-19 team
 
PSL draft should wait until this tournament ends. Lots of useless and over-aged players need to be kicked out. i.e Anwar Ali, Baba Zulfi, Irfan, Zakir, S. Butt, Azhar, Adnan............

Although my city lost,

still this was the best T20 match I watched this month after watching rubbish cricket of BPL and Ind v Nz in last couple of weeks.

Sarfraz did good captaincy but his team minus Khalid Latif, Shahzaib Hassan does'nt have the firepower to challenge a team where all powerhitters have seen grouped in one side.
Foolish and unfair squad selections for Natl. T20 as Gauhar Ali, Farhan, Sohaib Maqsood, Faheem Ashraf, Imran Khalid have been made one side under Saeed Ajmal.

Minus Faheem Ashraf and I. Khalid, Faisalabad hit 10 sixes chasing the target.

KPK Wicketkeeper/batsman Gauhar Ali always feasts on teams from KArachi, hit a 145 last year in regional Cup.

With Gauhar hitting well, Farhan started slowly making at one time 40 off 37, past the 10-11 overs. Sarfraz was able to strangulate the opposition around his 2 spinners for sometime but Farhan continued to rotate strike well and started showing his natural ability post 13 overs, hitting 36 off 15, with 3 sixes, 2 fours and only one dot ball. His stay made sure the match was finished by the 18th over.
Sohaib Maqsood still is a treat to watch, his hook off Hamza and 2 sixes were a beauty. The only downside in his game is the dot balls he piles on and lack of strike rotation, where Farhan did well.
Asif Ali played for Islamabad Utd. in PSL, he is a mentally tough powerhitter and deserves to benoticed by the selectors also only for his batting abilities of chasing and hitting.

Karachi also had some bright spots, Rumman Raees and Zulfiqar Babar bowled incredibly well. Akbar Rehman innings, some good captaincy and field settings by Sarfraz. Young Danish Ali did some tight bowling.
Mir Hamza had a bad day in opening spell and continued to bowl length will less variation unlike Rumman. Sarfraz favorite Anwar Ali conceded most. Ground fielding was'nt good and the target was too low for Faisalabad.

Danish was a batsman i think but he did not bat?
 
What a player Imam Ul Haq is turning out to be. He has the potential to become a 360 degrees player.
 
Raza Hassan is not part of any of the squads?
 
Production is average again by PTV sports,almost as bad as BPL.Commentary is even worse though and that’s quite an achievement.
 
Woww never witnessed a brotherly match before, PCB establishment at its nepotistic best. Should've changed name of team from Lahore B v Lahore W to Akmal v Akmal. Bhais [Kamran-Umar Akmal] on one side and bhai-cousin[Adnan Akmal-Babar Azam] on another side. Such legends Sami Aslam, Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal, Umar together and I was thinking Sarfraz Ahmed had been given a weak team rofl.

Why are they rushing Imam Haq into T20, for PSL? Did'nt know that 100 against poor Sri Lanka would cost a lot of young talent.
To top it, Ahmed Shehzad, Adnan Akmal, Hafeez also in the same side, all for PSL.

Intrigued to know where power hitters Aamir Yamin and Bilal Asif will bat. Where will Hussein Tallat get a chance?

hussain talat will bat at 5 but on the other hand lahore whites are rubbish team.

After the good first match a real downer feels like watching qabza mafia v qabza mafia (qabza= land-grabbers).
Watching Salman Butt on-field is cringeworthy. His Quaid Azam Trophy average is 20, Deserving Sohail Akhtar and Saad Ali not playing in National T20, some of the many sad spects of the systemic corruption of Pakistan cricket.

What a sight watching Akmals vs Akmals. Sorry Lahore vs Lahore. All the financially and morally corrupt players are playing together and against.
 
So sad, Kami paaji out. Amir in the same team where Hafeez is the captain? What's going on?
