3fer for Southee with 4 overs in the Test.

This could get ugly.

Is it cold and windy again?

Feel for Lanka this will be very tough. Get to 200 by any means.

NZ pitches always start off ultra green the flattens to pancakes later on.

Good recovery from SL. Solid defence by Dimuth Karunaratne after that no ball luck.

Great partnership by Mathes and Karunaratne, these two were always going to be the danger men.

Idk the ball is moving here and there, I think this pitch seems pretty good to bat on against the older ball but it's like a day early for most of the movement to go.

SRL might lose this Test for their bowling, but from 9-3, the position they are batting first, it's actually an winning position unless they lose last 6 for 50 more.

211-6. Still a decent score.

Dickwella is not gonna sit and block. C;mon Lankans, get to 250!

Batting first is a massive advantage both home and away. Only if the ball is doing a lot is it an advantage to bowl first these days

One of the weirdest scorecard I have seen for a while. 87 overs bowled in the day and of those 51 bowled by 2 premier fast bowlers - Southee and Boult. What are the other bowlers in the team for? 25 overs in a day for a fast bowler sounds a lot.

The pitch should flatten out nicely after 2 more sessions . How is the weather forecast ?

At Stumps Day 1 of the 1st Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand, SL are 275/9 (87.0 Ovs) after NZ won the toss and opted to bowl; Southee was outstanding with 5/67 whilst Karunaratne (79), Mathews (83) & Dickwella (73*) stood firm for SL

watching the highlights I saw Boult was bowling fast and one ball was 146kph. did anybody watch to see what his fastest ball was?

Sri Lanka were 9/3 yet closed on 275/9.

Had it been Pakistan they wouldn't have made 150.

Not looking good for SL. But test cricket is a funny game..and things can change pretty quickly.

Kane starts up from a series winning ton with 3 fours off the first 3 balls he faces.

These two looking solid , one of these two need to play a big innings to put Kiwis in strong position.

Williamson is looking in sublime form , if he stays there for another session , he can wipe out a lot of runs here

New Zealand take control of the 1st Test against Sri Lanka on Day 2 as they reach 311/2 after bowling the visitors for 282; Tim Southee's 6/68 is followed by Tom Latham's 121*, with Kane Williamson's 91 also the highlight of the day.

Disappointing from SRL, absolute unconditional surrender. Match might not go much beyond lunch tomorrow.

Williamson gets out in the 90s once again. The reason why Williamson remains a level below Kohli and Smith in tests.

Sri Lanka 229-3

I am impressed.

Go Mathew (95*) and Mendis(109)*! Amazing batting...

Can we see a Laxman and Dravid repeat... (this is not a jinx)

good batting by the islanders .
can mathew has the fitness to bat another session if so he will save this test

One of those rare days when a pair bats out a full day - last 2 I can recall were Steve Waugh & Greg Blewett against SAF & VVS/Dravid at Eden. There can be odd incidents with curtailed day, but for scheduled full day, this must be very rare occasion.

Dare to say SRL might get away with a draw - another 200 for next 70 overs, they'll leave Kiwis asking 160 odd inside 20 overs.

A fantastic fightback from Sri Lanka as they reach 259/3 at Stumps on Day 4, just 37 runs behind New Zealand; Kusal Mendis 116* and Angelo Mathews 117* have put on 246 runs to all but deny a win to the home-side;

Speeshal batting display by Mendis and Mathews, SL need to bat till Tea tomorrow somehow or till Drinks in 2nd session, win still out of equation for them but even a draw woupd be phaentastic result for SL

I haven't seen such a gritty fight back in SENA by an Asian team for ages. Bravo Kushal and Mathews.

I was expecting Kiwis to roll Srilanka over, good fightback but hope Kiwis wins this match

therein lies the difference between the lankans and our "batting"
our batsmen would have given up and meekly surrendered,
their batsmen had the mental toughness to bat a whole day and salvage a draw.
whenever we are in a position to draw the game, we lose simple.

Mathews and Mendis showing Indian and Pakistani batsmen how it's done, batted out the entire day to almost certainly saving the match

Sri Lanka's batting performance has been supreme.

Wish we could rent one or two of them.

watch the lowlights It is a proper road .

Still, if you put us on this pitch we'll find a way to fluff ourselves to 263 a.o.

--

By the way, just realized this is the same ground where we were headed for a sure-shot victory only to be thwarted by McCullum (302) and a few others who batted for days.

Karma is a beast eh, New Zealand?

Wow! What a day for Sri Lanka. This is good to see. I felt even against England, a 3-0 scoreline made the series seem a lot more one sided than it really was, that was a very closely contested series and easily SL could have won that series if little things went their way.

This also shows how bad Pakistan are.

I hope you are not seriously comparing SL batting with ours & finding them superior .

Watched the highlights a short while ago and some really good shots by SL. I watched the first coupe hours live as I was still awake at the time but when I woke up seeing they hadn't lost a wicket all day I was shocked! I think a SL win is the most unlikely, but these two should carry on batting and eventually the game will meander out to a draw, that's the best case for the visitors. If SL collapse, say lose the last 7 wickets for like 150 or less runs then NZ should be able to complete the chase, providing rain stays away.

the commentators were saying that " there is 90 % chances of Rain" tomorrow.

Watched the highlights. What a show by Kushal and Angelo Mathews. Batting an entire day without losing a wicket when facing a deficit of 296.

With rain likely to washout most of tomorrow, they have almost earned a draw for their team. Monumental effort.

Didn't expect that. But great effort by both players. Think Matthews has a point to prove after being dropped earlier in the year.

Mendis has plenty of talent but he has been given a lot of backing. He needed this score to show why he has been backed. I hope he can become more consistent. Really like him as a player.

Not a bad year for Kusal. Averages around 46 thanks to this knock. There is chance of rain on day 5 so Sri lanka may survive.

If it rains enough, if Lanka bat long enough...if if if ... they may have just pulled off the great escape.

Williamson gets out in the 90s once again. The reason why Williamson remains a level below Kohli and Smith in tests.

And our Pakistani batsmen can only dream of scoring 90s.

Mate Mccullum would have gotten no where near 300 if he wasn’t dropped so many times in the innings to the point it was a joke.
