Australia will renew their long overdue trans-Tasman rivalry with New Zealand when the Dettol ODI Series begins in Cairns on Tuesday.

The two sides haven't completed an ODI series since the 2016-17 season, after the scheduled series in March 2020 was cut short after one match due to COVID-19.

Australia will be aiming to return to winning ways in the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy after losing their last match against Zimbabwe by three wickets on Saturday in Townsville.

But Aussie captain Aaron Finch isn't expecting things to be easy for the home side, who face an in-form opposition at a ground that most Australians have never played at.

Only five of Australia’s squad of 14 have featured in a match at Cazalys Stadium in Cairns; Steve Smith, David Warner (in 2008-09), Josh Inglis (in 2016-17), Marnus Labuschagne and Adam Zampa (in 2017-18).

Finalists in the 2019 World Cup, New Zealand are in hot form in the 50-over format and have only lost once since the pandemic-shortened series in 2020.

They claimed a 3-0 over Bangladesh, a 3-0 win over Netherlands, another 3-0 win over Ireland, a 1-0 win over Scotland and most recently, 2-1 win over West Indies last month.

"They're a fantastic unit, they have been for a long time," Finch told reporters in Cairns on Monday.

"They continue to be one of the benchmarks in world cricket in all three formats of the game and the fact that they're No.1 in ODI cricket at the moment is testament to that."

New Zealand sit atop the ICC Men's ODI rankings, with a rating score of 124 points.

Australia are below England, India and Pakistan in fifth position, with 102 points.

"They're always close battles regardless of what format," Finch said of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy.

"They've got world-class players throughout their innings, with (Martin) Guptill and (Kane) Williamson … there's firepower all throughout with Jimmy Neesham at six or seven.

"And their bowling; (Trent) Boult, (Tim) Southee, (Mitch) Santner, they're world class."

Finch was one of the few Australian players who had an outdoor net session at Monday's optional training, facing coach Andrew McDonald on the 'wanger' for a solid 45-minute hit-out.

Finch made scores of 15, one and five in the Dettol ODI Series against Zimbabwe, falling to left-armer Richard Ngarava on all three occasions.

And the Aussie skipper said he was doing everything in his power to return to form.

"It was a really good long hit, probably longer than I generally have the day before a game," Finch said.

"But not having as much time in the middle lately lends itself to more training unfortunately.

"Obviously the performances personally haven't been there in terms of the output of runs, but still feel like I'm a pretty good player."

"You're always looking to improve and I think being able to train consistently and keep tinkering with my game to get better is the most important thing."

Finch noted earlier in the week that his front foot movements weren't where he'd like them to be.

"When I get a bit heavy there it starts to affect the rest of my game," Finch said on Friday.

"I feel as though that's coming along really well. The rewards will be there very soon, it just hasn't happened yet.

While the early starts in Townsville resulted in the toughest conditions for batters ever seen in an Australian ODI series, the matches in Cairns will begin at 2:20pm local time.

Despite an unseasonably cool winter and recent weather around, curator Kevin Mitchell Jnr is expecting pace out of the Cazalys Stadium wicket and across the pristine outfield.

Aussies are favorites (despite their recent shock loss against Zimbabwe).

I expect Aussies to win 3-0.

Any reason for that? I mean they lost a match to Zimbabwe so definitely Kiwis can challenge them over a course of 3 games.

Zimbabwe's win was a fluke.

Aussies generally always crush Kiwis at home. Kiwis do poorly in both Australia and India.

We beat you when it matters and that's the only thing that matters.

They are well set, they should make 275 and it will be a terrefic chase.

Idk about that, all the batsmen are struggling to get anything away. Looking more like 240 barring the middle order firing big time.

NZ - 40 runs short on that wicket. A team that lost an ODI to West Indies is certainly not worthy of #1 rank.

I am a Bangladeshi. Not Indian.

It is true though. Kiwis tend to lose badly in Australia and India (bilateral games).

I don't remember when was the last time New Zealand won a game against Australia in Australia. I think it was 2011 Hobart Test.

Australia need 31 runs in 65 balls

Looking good for a win now despite loss of wickets - Cameron Green the key wicket

Aussies are making an easy game difficult.

232 would have been a walk in the park for previous Aussie teams.

It's raining now. They are off. Drama.

Aussies are 4 runs away from a win (2 wickets in hand).

I wonder what the Duckworth Lewis says.

Scores are level.

Aussies need 1 run from 5 overs.

Green is struggling with cramp.

A sublime 158-run partnership from Alex Carey and Cameron Green has saved Australia from a dire situation in the opening Dettol ODI against New Zealand in Cairns.

Joining forces at 5-44 in response to New Zealand's 232, Carey (85 off 99 balls) and Green (89 not out off 92 ball) flourished on a Cazalys Stadium pitch where almost every other batter had issues.

Although hampered by cramp to his left leg, a hobbling Green powered on as he and Adam Zampa's 26-run ninth-wicket partnership got Australia across the line by two wickets in a tense finish.

Green and Carey's 158-run stand is the second-highest ever for the sixth wicket in Chappell-Hadlee Trophy history behind Brendon McCullum and Craig McMillan's 165-run stand in Hamilton in 2007.

Their stunning partnership evoked memories of Carey and Glenn Maxwell's incredible rescue act against England in Manchester 2020, when the two Australians scored centuries after coming together at 5-73.

Carey's driving on the up was a feature while Green showcased his brute strength with a string of devastating pull and sweep shots to the leg-side boundary.

But it wasn't a comfortable five-wicket win for Australia – Carey's dismissal with 31 runs required prompted a mini-collapse with Maxwell (two off eight) and Mitch Starc (one off three) following in quick succession.

There was a seven-minute break in play with 23 runs left to get as Green required medical attention on his left leg and then with four runs to get, a brief rain interruption.

Green finished unbeaten at the non-strikers end on a career-best 89 as a leg-side wide from Lockie Ferguson gifted Australia a thrilling victory.

Carey and Green came together in the 12th over after Trent Boult (4-40) and Matt Henry (2-50) rocked Australia's top order with a new-ball blitz.

Boult found plenty of swing and grabbed the wickets of Aaron Finch, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne in his first four overs.

Both Finch and Labuschagne were lbw to in-swinging deliveries while Smith was bowled as he chopped on attempted a drive on the up.

It left Australia's chase in disarray at 3-27, a situation that only got more desperate as David Warner departed two balls later, caught on the square leg boundary off Henry.

Melbourne Stars recruit Boult finished his scintillating opening spell with figures of 3-12 from five overs, adding to his impressive ODI record against Australia against whom he averages 18.12 with the ball.

Henry's method of attacking the stumps and relying on seam movement also came to fruition as the workhorse right-armer bowled Marcus Stoinis (five off 11) through the gate with a ball that came in just enough.

Earlier, Australian captain Finch opted to bowl first at the toss due to the unknown conditions facing them on the Cazalys Stadium wicket.

None of the New Zealanders passed 50 however there were solid partnerships all the way throughout the innings.

Batting was difficult from the outset, with openers Martin Guptill and Devon Conway struggling to find fluency.

Perhaps sensing that, both leg-spinner Adam Zampa and off-spinner Glenn Maxwell were brought into the attack during the powerplay, an uncharacteristic move by Australia.

Guptill's innings (six off 19 balls) ended in spectacular fashion as Maxwell pulled in a stunning one-handed catch at backward point.

Player of the Series against Zimbabwe, Zampa was again brilliant with the ball. While the pitch did not offer a great deal of turn, he proved tough to get away with his first three overs costing only five runs.

Both Conway and Kane Williamson made it obvious they were keen to attack Cameron Green or at least shift him off his length. The allrounder was superb against Zimbabwe with eight wickets at 7.12 apiece, taking a wicket every 13.5 balls, but his five overs in Cairns cost him 33 runs.

New Zealand's captain Williamson looked to go large off Glenn Maxwell in the 30th over only ended up hitting a simple catch to Warner at long on.

But the wicket of the Kiwi legend wasn't Maxwell's biggest impact with the ball.

The decision to bring him back into the attack in the 42nd over was a gamble by Finch, as the partnership between Tom Latham and Daryl Mitchell had just crossed 50 and was accelerating.

It paid immediate dividends, with Mitchell clipping the first ball of the over to Steve Smith at mid-wicket, proving the impetus for a run of dismissals.

Four balls later, Latham swept straight to Zampa at short fine leg.

Maxwell finished with 4-52 from his 10 overs, his second-best figures in ODI cricket and the third time he'd taken four wickets in an innings.

When Jimmy Neesham ramped Josh Hazlewood straight to Alex Carey in the 47th over, any hope of a 250-plus score for the Kiwis evaporated.

In their last nine overs, New Zealand scored just 6-53 to finish with 9-232.

Both sides will have just one day break before facing off again on Thursday at Cazalys Stadium.

Quite similar start to the australian innings. One wicket less so Steven Smith is out there.
Ferguson has been dropped for Southee or a nigle?

Australia were 54-5 and they managed 195-9.In the first match they were 44-5 and scored 233-8 to win the match. They fight I the last man that is why they are successful.NZ should have won the first natch and should win this one but the game is not over until the last ball is bowled.

I must say I must apologise to our Pak team....forget them this Kiwi innings is next level to TUK TUK i have ever seen. Absolute amazed to see this.

NZ 57-8.Is this due to the pitch or good bowling( from both sides)?

114 run thrashing on that wicket. Doesn't look good for NZ. Down to 117 points and #2 in ODI rankings . England are back as #1

Wow that was some demonstration from the Australian. It was so beautiful to watch.

Australia tear through Black Caps to seal series win
Chasing just 196 for victory, New Zealand capitulated under the pressure of Australia’s bowlers and slumped to series defeat in Cairns

A strangling new-ball display and a gutsy rear-guard from the tail has seen Australia claim the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy with a 113-run win over New Zealand in the second Dettol ODI in Cairns.

The Kiwis were skittled for just 82, their second-lowest ODI score against Australia as Adam Zampa finished with career-best figures of 5-35, his maiden five-wicket haul.

The hosts were in a world of hurt when they slumped to 8-117 after being sent in but Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa and Josh Hazlewood put on a further 78 runs to give their side a chance.

Starc (38no off 45 balls) and Hazlewood's (23no off 16) 10th-wicket partnership was an unbeaten 47 runs off only 36 balls as Australia crept up to 9-195 from their 50 overs.

Hazlewood hit the first six of his ODI career while Starc hit his highest ODI score in nine years.

Riding the momentum through the innings break, Starc and Sean Abbott then picked off New Zealand's top order to cripple the Kiwis' chase early.

Starc continued his unbelievable record of striking in the first over of the innings when Martin Guptill edged his fifth ball to Finch at slip.

Since 2015 Starc has taken 20 wickets in the opening over of an ODI innings – the next most in that period is Lasith Malinga with nine.

Kane Williamson then should have been run out on his first ball – a big mix-up with Devon Conway left both New Zealand batters mid-pitch but a wayward throw from Abbott reprieved the Kiwi captain.

Abbott, brought back into the XI in place of Cameron Green, had instant success when thrown the ball with a double-wicket maiden to begin his spell.

Conway was caught at fine leg on the pull shot and Tom Latham was caught by Finch at first slip, resulting in raucous celebrations from the recalled allrounder.

Abbott didn’t concede a run until his 29th delivery, peeling off four consecutive maidens.

Meanwhile at the other end, Hazlewood and Williamson were engaged in a fascinating battle as the Australian quick beat the right hander's outside edge three times in quick succession.

New Zealand crawled to 3-14 after 11 overs and eventually 3-33 after 18 as Australia's bowlers didn't miss their line or length.

After battling honourably for 57 balls, Williamson's concentration finally lapsed when he played and missed at a juicy Zampa full toss.

The New Zealand captain threw his head back in disbelief when Rod Tucker raised the finger with the visiting captain out lbw for 17.

And when Zampa had Daryl Mitchell (10 off 31 balls) out lbw the following over, New Zealand had slipped deeper into the mire at 5-38 with the required run rate approaching six an over.

Jimmy Neesham (two off four), Bracewell (12 off 22) and Southee (two off three) all fell in the space of five overs leaving New Zealand staring down the barrel of their lowest-ever ODI total; 64 against Pakistan in Sharjah 1986.

They avoided that figure, but there were few smiles from the Black Caps’ camp in an otherwise miserable night.

Australia's innings started in remarkably similar fashion to two days earlier, losing their first four wickets inside the Powerplay.

Sent in by opposing captain Williamson, Finch's horror run continued, caught at mid off for a second-ball duck attempting a lofted off drive.

It's the fifth time Finch has been dismissed without scoring in ODIs this calendar year, dropping his 2022 average to 13.00.

His opening partner David Warner fell in similar circumstances and to the same bowler-fielder combo of Matt Henry and Kane Williamson.

Trent Boult found enough swing in the humid Cairns conditions and had both Marnus Labuschagne and Marcus Stoinis trapped lbw.

Both batters opted to challenge the decision and both reviews found umpire Rod Tucker's decision correct.

It meant Australia had burnt both their reviews after eight and a half overs.

Coach Andrew McDonald said it was an area of the game they need to tighten up on.

"It's always a continual conversation when you don't get them right," McDonald said after Australia's loss to Zimbabwe in Townsville where they cost themselves a wicket after some poor decisions to refer.

"We've probably got to get better at it. I think every team does."

It didn't come back to bite Australia however the Kiwis continued to find wickets at regular intervals on the tricky surface.

When some fine glovework from Tom Latham stumped Alex Carey (after a very marginal call by the third umpire) left Australia 5-54.

It's a third-straight underwhelming performance from Australia's top order, after being 5-72 in the third ODI in Townsville and 5-44 in game one in Cairns.

Smith and Maxwell had built a 49-run partnership but Boult hurried Maxwell with a short ball and was well caught by Guptill running in from the rope.

Smith was the only Australian to pass 50, scoring a patient and controlled 61 off 94 balls, but when he tried – unsuccessfully – to go aerial off Tim Southee, Australia had lost eight wickets with only 117 runs on the board.

Don't think these losses have anything to do with mental edge. Australia bowled slightly better in tougher bowling conditions and NZ were below par with the bat . Williamson is batting terribly at the moment.

New Zealand were on top in the first two matches but allowed Australia to get back and win both.

Australia climb in the CWCSL standings as Finch bids farewell to ODIs

NZ v SA, third ODI, report

Captain Aaron Finch bowed out of the ODI game with a 3-0 whitewash over New Zealand in the ODI series as Australia clinched a thriller by 25 runs at Cairns.

The win takes Australia to the second spot on the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League table with 120 points. They are now five points off England, who sit on top of the standings with 125 points.

Aaron Finch bid farewell to the ODI cricket in the final game against New Zealand. His stay at the crease in his final game lasted only 13 balls, with Tim Southee shattering his stumps as the Australian captain walked off the field to resounding applause from the crowd at Cairns.

Finch called time on his career ahead of the final game, with a poor run of form affirming the decision to hang his boots. Australia now have enough time to find a replacement at the top of the order as well as a skipper to lead them in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup next year.

The 35-year-old will however be available to lead his side in the T20 World Cup at home next month where Australia will be looking to become the first team to defend their title.

Though he missed out with the bat ODI, he bows out of the 50-over format having captained Australia to a 3-0 whitewash over New Zealand in his final series.

In the final ODI, Australia managed to recover after they lost their openers in the Powerplay. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne stepped up with a 118-run stand for the third wicket.

While Labuschagne fell soon after his fifty, Smith converted it into a hundred, his first in ODI cricket in almost two years. Some late fireworks from Alex Carey and Cameron Green propelled Australia to 267/5.

In reply, New Zealand's innings failed to take off. After the opening stand was broken for 49, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The innings of James Neesham, Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner kept the Black Caps in the game but the total proved to be 25 runs too many as Australia completed a 3-0 whitewash.

That's true as well but their record vs Australia home and away is shocking.

One win vs Australia in 25 years across 28 Tests.

No ODI win in Australia since 2009. Lost 10 out of 15 T20Is including the T20 World Cup final last year.
