England can't blame bowlers for more than a couple of losses, most of their recent defeats are due to batsmen.

Tamim iqbal scoring back to back hundreds :shakib Dilshan 180 at Lords.. didnt Sri lanka score 400 and 500 in England? Apart from Anderson and Swann on most occassions, the other bowlers are on and off. Bangladesh also scored 400 against them :D

Lords is terribly flat though, any movement is because of cloud cover. And yeah, we need Anderson, the SL incident happened because of him having a niggle and not playing I think.

England haven't lost a match recently due to bowling. The last one they did was Chennai to Sehwag's blitz. The bowlers simply underperform on flat pitches that are meant to be draws anyways... That is if our batsmen show any sign of competence on those pitches.

Sure - Anderson, Broad, Bresnan, Finn, and Swann have all averaged under 30 in the last 3 years.

I am sure Bresnan and Broad average over 30 in last 3 years... specially Bresnan, he is terrible :akhtar

Broad averages 29, Bressie 32 in that period.

The latter had a mare against SA, but he was tearing up trees in Australia and when the Indians lost 4-0 in England. He's lost 10 mph due to his elbow injury, and his ability to get lift and reverse swing has gone with it so he looks trundly now.

Bresnan is finished in Test cricket mainly due to injuries IMO, sad story

Bresnan looked pedestrian against India as well, he is gone for good. What happened to the 7 ft giant Tremlett? He hasnt played for 2 years

Injury has ruined some potentially great careers. Bond, Akhtar, Reid, Bishop..

Woakes is a suitable replacement for Broad. He could be given a go. Poor guy has to be benched for Dernbach  His FC stats are astounding. No harm in trying him in Tests against weaker opponents at the start.

Dernbach is South African, that alone gives him precedence over the English players :boycott . Not sure what is astounding about Woakes first class record, look at this for astounding

Tremlett is approaching full fitness and due back for the Ashes. Probably our best seamer when he is actually available for selection

I hope to see New Zealand win, so they can show me that they can still offer some fight and do not suffer the same fate that West Indies have in test cricket.

It's almost impossible for NZ to win this test, even for England it's going to be really hard to win. Flat pitch and rain predicted for day 4 and 5.

Although Australia don't have an extremely powerful squad, I believe the Ashes will still be a closely fought series simply because of the two country's rivalries. Even when England didn't have such a good team, they still used to be able to put up a good fight when it came to competing with Australia for the Ashes. However, I believe England's inevitable win depends whether Graeme Swann is available and has recovered completely to full fitness.

The dude's name is crazy :yk

But stats are crazier. Philander 2.0 ???

Yet to be seen, he will have one hell of a tough time breaking into the test side unless he proves himself in odi's first. Should be selected for odi's soon if he keeps it up.. wanna see him in tests in a year.

With Swann's injuries, the rotting Onions and Broad's rubbishness, perhaps Anderson Finn Woakes and Monty is worth a look for the next few years, with Tremlett making a special guest appearance when fit

England should play attack of Bresnan, Broad, Onions and Patel.

Firstly, what what I've seen of Graham Onions, he is completely rubbish and massively over-rated and is a bowler who usually has an extremely expensive economy rate.

In addition, Stuart Broad shouldn't be selected because despite his potential being evident for a number of years, it seems that he has not been able to probably develop and succeed as a cricketer and his wicket-taking ability has dried up in recent times.

Moreover, Patel is nowhere near as effective enough as a spinner to become England's premier spinner. The only reason why he sometimes receives a position in the playing XI is because he is able to play spin well and because of his ability to bat well.

Furthermore, Bresnan shouldn't even be selected because he has become a trundler in recent times. However, he is still able to perform well and solidify his place in the England XI if he improves upon his batting.

My opinion is that England's attack should be Anderson, Swann (if he is available), Monty Panesar and Broad (simply because there isn't anyone else to replace him, yet).

Woakes could fill in the all rounder slot in a few years but no way he can be one of the three seamers. Hows Boyd Ranking doing in FC btw ? :afridi

Though Ben Stokes is rated higher than Woakes by cricket writers. I feel that Andy Flower is looking at Woakesy more as a limited overs specialist.

Come on Ding Dong, get out soon so we can see the real test quality batsmen come on up. Finn, Prior and Root.

Pietersen in gets a start shock. Need some runs from him

I'd like to see the Tremlettinator back too, guy's a war machine.

He is at least a full foot taller than most people lol. Could probably consume me for his pre-circuit breakfast if he so wished

He's not only very tall, but built like a tank too, makes Jimmy look like a dwarf (and I'm of the same height :rondu :)) )

Where do you guys live? I see guys close to Tremlett's height every day.... 6 feet is like the average height for a man

Jimmy isn't tall for a pacer, above average. 6 feet 1

Thought he was 6'2''-6'3'' ?

Brussels, Belgium and I don't feel small at 6'2''-6'3'' (Belgians are supposedly amongst the tallest Europeans with the Dutch, average of 5'10'' I think)... have at least three family relatives who are in the Tremlett range back in Pakistan though, and I put in the Tremlett bracket whoever makes me look tiny. :sachin

That is twaddle vandokkum, the only place with an average male height of 6 foot is Scandinavia and they are like the master race. Many countries have an average male height of 5'8 or 5'9, and in many others it is less

At 6 feet 3 you aren't gonna feel small anywhere unless you are roommates with Irfan and Tremlett :P . Average man in Netherlands is above 6 feet, where did you get 5'10? In the US the average guy is 5"11 and there are so many Chinese people. You are about my height :msd

Can't believe Bell is playing his 85th Test match. His position in the starting eleven is allways questionable.

What kind of people have I been hanging with... I only know a couple of guys shorter than 6 feet.. but then again most of my friends aren't Japanese/ Mexican (no offense). They are a lot shorter than Europeans and African Americans

Not really.. it would only have been questionable if he was one of the main batsmen.. he has enough guys around him to not be under pressure most of the times.

Average heights

1. Netherlands 183,2 cm
2. Sweden 180,4 cm
3. Germany 180,1 cm
4. Norway 179,9 cm

. USA 176,7 cm

I am glad I don't live in Holland :yk

Most (white) blokes in the UK are between 5'7 and 6'1. Would be the same in most European countries.

I am 5 foot 10, not tall to say the least, and yes it annoys me :sachin

You are not short or tall, so you don't get any advantages :P

180.5 cm for me. So slightly above average, i'll take it.

Feel like such a whore, my current manager is a die hard England cricket fan, so I pretend I am one too when i'm around him as I have a pay review in a few weeks.

Only at home can I be myself....come on the kiwis!

Pretty poor innings from Ian barring that one high-class shot, 11 (46)

bell gone, terrible strike rate. England need quick runs to have a chance of winning this

We can have an evening of bowling, things might happen

His entire career has been a disappointment. Could have been a right-handed Gower.....

Yay! Good news! Swanny's operation is a success and expecting 6-8 weeks of rehab. Fit for NZ tour of England maybe.

Prior is at 79, and is still attacking, no worries on getting out before a possible #7. It's all about doing the job for England with him, whether it's to survive, counterattack or to get quick runs.

And seriously. Why would McCullum bowl on this pitch after nearly running his bowlers into the ground a few days prior to this match. 170 overs was it last match? 143 overs this match. These lads should be knackered.

Prior averages something like 47/48 at 7. Gets his runs at a very good rate too, so selfless. Best W/K batsman in tests by a fair bit.
