A delegation of overseas Pakistanis on Tuesday arrived at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to push for the implementation of the i-voting regime days after a law to this effect was passed by the National Assembly.
The delegation also submitted a note for future reference to the ECP secretary as they urged the commission to implement i-voting on an immediate basis. The secretary assured the expatriates that the i-voting system will be implemented within 90 days.
As per the text of the memorandum, the overseas Pakistanis urged the ECP to implement the new law regarding internet voting within 90 days. They said the ECP should also issue instructions to the Pakistani missions abroad to take steps regarding the i-voting.
“It is the constitutional responsibility of the ECP to give voting rights to overseas Pakistanis,” the memo said, adding that they will protest across Pakistan if the said right was denied to them.
Overseas Pakistan Chairman Shahid Ranjha said that he was grateful to Prime Minister Imran Khan for giving the expatriates the right to vote.
He said their right to vote was being politicised, adding that overseas Pakistanis should be included in the local government elections. According to Ranjha, overseas voters will play a decisive role in the upcoming elections.
Earlier, the forum also held a rally outside the ECP where Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry and Special Aid to the PM on Political Communication Shahbaz Gill, among other federal ministers, were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, SAPM Gill said the government was aware of the issues faced by the Pakistanis living overseas. He added that the expatriates were demanding their due rights by asking for i-voting.
