Pakistan bowlers fightback against South Africa to leave the match in balance, as nine wickets fall on Day 2

Stubbs has shown mental Strength Babar can dream of. This innings * is already better than what Babar Played on Road of Karachi against Aussies

I’m not sure how I feel about this day, seems like Pakistan is doing well but South Africa is just in it still.

We need a good performance in the second innings.

Pakistan are a second pacer short on this wicket. They should have picked a pace bowling all rounder in place of a batsman

Game is in balance after Pakistan lower end completely mucked it with a collapse of 16/5 , they missed 50 runs there. Add to it SA have batted well ,
Lower order has been disappointing with the bat. In England series Sajid and nauman had significant contrib with bat which is missing in this series

It’s in the balance if SA lower order can give them even 30-40 lead or even get them at parity, Pakistan can easily collapse in second innings

Saud Shakeel shared following thoughts in a presser today following stumps on Day 2:

On the collapse of lower order:

* "This has happened, and similar results are recurring."
* "Such mistakes should not be repeated."
* "If you want to be a good team and have consistently played Test matches, if you want to win, the contribution of the lower order is also necessary."
* "Regarding the last match against Pakistan, there must have been a lot of pressure on their lower order."
* "But our lower order isn't like that of South Africa where Maharaj is a talented player, and others are too. So We won't criticize our lower-order batsmen."
* "Even our top-order players... the T20 captain looks completely different, as if he is under pressure."

On the Pitch and Pressure
* "Is this pressure coming because of this wicket?"
* "The behavior [of the pitch] changes completely, which we can't understand."
* "I think the pitch might take on a heavier role; we'll have to see how it plays."
* "The pitch plays a very important role in Test cricket, as we have seen in several places."
* "I think this is a much better pitch."
* "The plan is to see if we can get them out as soon as possible tomorrow."

On Noman Ali
* "No, no, it's not like that. See, we are still... The first time I got out was when I was speaking with Noman Bhai, but I played well in the match where he scored 93. However, there is one thing that is a concern: the way we are losing wickets back-to-back. We should address this and will try to improve it."
* "If we talk about Numan's bowling, he's a bowler who bowls long spells and holds his line. And if he maintains it, is it possible he isn't getting enough space, or that he's bowling a little short? He's unable to maintain that length."
* "He admitted that he bowls long spells, but in the end, he's human too. So he might find it a little difficult to bowl long spells."

On Asif Afridi
* "He practiced a lot in domestic cricket and is quite ready for Test cricket."
* "Look, I'm so happy for him that he has made his Test debut. I think it's late for him, but they say, 'better late than never.' Whenever we give him a chance..."
* "When I played domestically, I personally found him very difficult. Even in our Grade 2 match, Asif Bhai played against us, and he dismissed me in the first innings. Whenever we play against him, he always causes trouble."
* "You can see that his experience is being utilized, and it was seen that he conceded only 19 runs in 10 overs."
* "It showed what an experienced player he is. This shows that those who have played a lot of domestic cricket and then reach this level won't find it too difficult."
* "You must have seen the way he was bowling. I think, in the end, he gave us the final word by getting the breakthrough, and the match is now quite evenly balanced."

Team Combination and Strategy
* "I don't think playing three spinners was an issue, especially with the way Asif Bhai was bowling; you must have seen it."
* "The match is now evenly balanced, and I understand that the first session tomorrow will be very important for us."
* "We will come out. If Ali performs well and we take a good lead, then playing the fourth innings on this pitch is going to be very difficult."
* "My understanding was that there would be more spin on the pitch today, but the pitch played very well. There wasn't much spin, and even when it was happening, it took a long time to get there."
* "We'll come out early tomorrow and see. If we get spin and an early breakthrough in that first half-hour, we'll gain a significant advantage in the match."

Having Agha at 7 is a luxury but after that suddenly it’s 4 number 11s. We missed a trick by not playing a genuine all-rounder at 8. We are missing batting depth more than bowling depth in this series so far.

I am not comfortable with the current lead at all tbh. Day 3 is probably going to be Pak’s most important day of cricket this year. The significance of a win in this match cannot be overstated.

We should aim to get them out before lunch like they did with us. Then bat out the whole of third day. Not like the first match where 4th innings had already begun on day 3.

He has played a very admirable knock, eventhough it has been miserable to watch. And this is coming from someone who doesn't mind watching old-school, attritional test cricket.
Anyone who plays against his nature and does well should be commended. This is not his natural game. ABDV was master of that. Given that SAnhas longer tail.in this match he had to put a price.on his wicket.

That's why I said he has played a very admirable knock

You get one more wicket and you are into South Africa's tail. I would say Pakistan is still well-placed in this test match with the pitch likely to deteriorate in the coming days. Stubbs has really grinded and gotten in but it's important to note that even he has scored just 66 despite facing 180+ balls, which means that despite his effort he hasn't really been able to take the game away from Pakistan who still lead by 148.

It will be interesting to see if he tries to change gears tomorrow, and how he is affected if Pakistan get some wickets early on.

But if he stays and builds decent partnerships with other batters, SA have a 25% chance.

Verreyene is the only other batter left. Muthusamy and Jansen can bat but I don't think South Africa will have that much confidence in their abilities on this pitch, especially if it starts deteriorating and aiding spin.

South Africa's tail is technically better equipped to deal with Pakistan's spinners. Pakistan's tail lacks defensive technique and the ability to maneaver the ball for singles which is why they can only slog which is suicidal when the ball is turning and keeping low.

Pitch will only get worse from here on. Take even 50 runs lead and dont collapse in 2nd inning meaning anything 200 plus for target of 270 or more and game is in the bag. Man of the match: toss ki chawanni

DAY 1 [ 259/5 ] , DAY 2 [259/9 ] .
Predict DAY 3 total runs & wickets folks .
Me thinks 259/11 .
Remember , no evidence so far to suggest it is going to be a minefield tomorrow .

My comment isn't about them playing to win or not, it's more about the team composition where I'm saying that you do not need 3 specialist spinners in the team. You can use 2 spinners and a couple of part timers who can roll their arm over if necessary. Saud & Salman are both capable of bowling a few overs to break the monotony.

A test team needs pacers even if the conditions support spin, as fast bowlers' footmarks create rough patches that assist spinners as the test progresses.
Exactly.

There's nothing in a pitch that warrants 3 spinners over two, it's not like you have to manage workload, they should be able to bowl a lot of overs and if it is turning square should bowl the opposition out quickly.

It's a strategy I really dislike, firstly because it is boring and defensive but it also just makes no sense. An all rounder could have easily played instead of a spinner

Cricket without fast bowlers and a sporting pitch is as food without salt - regardless of other spices in it. I usually stay away from such boredom. I have no idea how people enjoy such bland cricket.

Mahraj got more out of the pitch in comparison to Nauman. It doesn't help when Shan Masood opens the field up even for new batters and has limited men around the bat, the bowler constantly has to bowl to another batsman. Masood habitually does this and eases the pressure on the opposition.

We need to develop an all-rounder for foreign tours & the only way to develop someone is by playing them. Also, the most important aspect of cricket is entertainment, aisi boring cricket khel rahay hain k puraanay aur pakkay fans test cricket nahi daikh rahay tau young generation kaisay interest develop karay gi test cricket main?

They tried flat pitch. England bullied them..Tried seamer pitch. BD bullied them. Spin pitch plus toss win so far have justified their strategy.

India won world record 17 home series in a row lol so don't compare yourself with other teams. Even with this strategy you could not win against WI
This is the reason I do not argue with Pajeets.
First, try to understand the subject (pitch and fast bowling) instead of deflection and history of cricket.

You are not understanding why they made pitch like this. They had severe backlash after fast bowlers were traveling at 5 to 6 an over. With zero home wins Pakistan had to resort to this strategy. That is how Bangladesh manages to win a few matches here and there. Make the conditions as alien as possible for visitors. Pakistan is following suit.
