Pakistan and New Zealand go head-to-head in the first of three Tests in Abu Dhabi from Friday, 16 November with the odds firmly in favour of the home side.

Overview

Pakistan v New Zealand
1st Test
Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi
Friday, 16 November, 10:00am local time, 6:00am GMT

Pakistan have had a good run in Test cricket in recent times, belying their seventh position in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings – this year, they beat Ireland in Ireland, then drew a two-Test series in England, and have since won the two-Test series in the United Arab Emirates against Australia 1-0.

New Zealand might be the fourth-best team in the world at the moment, but considering Pakistan’s form and the fact that the Tests will be played in the UAE, the visitors start as underdogs.

That said, New Zealand have been one of the better travellers to the UAE since it became Pakistan’s adopted home.

The only time they have played Test cricket there since 2009, a three-Test series in 2014, it ended 1-1. Pakistan won the first Test in Abu Dhabi by 248 runs, the second in Dubai was drawn, and the third, in Sharjah, went the way of New Zealand by an innings and 80 runs.

Kane Williamson wasn’t captain then, Brendon McCullum was. But Williamson was in the team, as were Tom Latham and Ross Taylor among the batsmen, BJ Watling, the wicket-keeper, pacers Trent Boult and Tim Southee and leg-spinner Ish Sodhi.

They are all in the mix this time too, and though New Zealand started the tour by being swept 3-0 in the Twenty20 Internationals, they bounced back in the one-day internationals, which ended 1-1 with the final game abandoned. That should be reason for cautious optimism in the ranks.

The team looks solid, with Southee and Boult part of a strong pace attack that also has Matt Henry and Neil Wagner, and a spin department that’s nicely varied: Sodhi the leg-spinner, Ajaz Patel, the left-arm spinner, and newcomer William Sommerville, the off-spinner who has come in as Todd Astle’s sub.

But the Pakistanis are excellent for the conditions too, as one would expect.

They have left out Fakhar Zaman, despite the opening batsman scoring 94 and 66 in his debut Test, against Australia, and have instead included Saad Ali, the uncapped 25-year-old top-order batsman from Karachi who scored 144 from No.6 in a recent fixture for Pakistan A against New Zealand A.

The other new face in the squad is a more expected one – Shaheen Shah Afridi, has emerged as one of the most exciting young pacers lately, and was among the wickets in the T20Is and ODIs. He completes a pace line-up that has the incredible Mohammad Abbas, Mir Hamza, Hasan Ali and all-rounder Faheem Ashraf.

The rest of the squad are along expected lines, with a lot of experience in the batting with Azhar Ali, Mohammad Hafeez and Asad Shafiq, and Yasir Shah as the spin front-man.

Pakistan are favourites, but New Zealand have the personnel to push the ‘home’ side to the limit.

Key players

Mohammad Abbas (Pakistan): A total of 59 wickets from 10 Tests, including 17 in two Tests against Australia just the other day – 28-year-old Abbas is one of the finest pacers in the game today and definitely the one New Zealand must be wary of.

Ross Taylor (New Zealand): Experience matters – Taylor has all the pedigree, accumulated over 85 Test matches, and is in good form, as the 80 and 86* in the ODIs prove. He will have to be the pivot around which the batting revolves.

Conditions

The sun will be out, if a few clouds threaten, they might not for long, and the temperatures should be around 35ºC. And then we’ll see if the fast bowlers get any purchase out of the pitch as the spinners most likely will.

Squads

Pakistan: Sarfraz Ahmed (c & wk), Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali, Babar Azam, Bilal Asif, Faheem Ashraf, Haris Sohail, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Hafeez, Saad Ali, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Yasir Shah

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (c), Tom Blundell, Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Ajaz Patel, Jeet Raval, Ish Sodhi, William Somerville, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling (wk)

New Zealand have won the toss and elected to bat first in the 1st Test against Pakistan being played in Abu Dhabi

NZ won the toss and bat first...

This could get ugly.

Will be the true test for this team despite people downplaying NZ. Winning the toss and batting first in UAE is a huge advantage.

Let's see if that Aussie draw was a once in a while occurence...

PCB should remove Sarfraz as captain as soon as possible; he is one of the worst captain ever for youngsters

Goodness! abbas is probably the most accurate bowler in the world right now. Just relentlessly makes you play. Apart from 1 bad ball, he's been spot on.

Agreed! He's been brilliant in his two overs. This Raval guy has been lucky!

Glad we lost the toss. Wouldn’t want to watch Azhar bat on my day off.

Abbas will revolutionise our strategy for the UAE, incredible bonus to have wickets with the new ball here

Pakistan need bowlers to stand up and support Abbas here , specially Yasir has to be at his best.

I’m just reading commentary, don’t have a screen with me. And when I read Hafeez caught the ball I knew without even reading further he must’ve juggled it, guess I was right.

Only way to cope with Hafeez the fielder is to assume he will not make the catch. You save yourself from disappointment, and so when he does catch it, it’s a pleasant surprise.

Well I was wrong, good thing they didn't review.

Hassan has bowled 2 very good deliveries. Tailing in late and quite sharply at that

Btw nice little play of captaincy by Sarfraz there, in the last over he changed short leg to silly mid off which made Taylor to play a wrong shot and lose his wicket.

Sarfaraz to yasir" bahot ache bahot ache ye let raha hai ball pr. bahot acha hai ye hamare liye" :))

Sarfarz's captaincy and Yasir's bowling keeping critics quiet at the moment - long may it continue.

With NZ going at under 2 for most of the innings, not sure how they are doing any better than Azhar at the moment. It's been a borefest so far.

just realized haris sohail averages 22 with the ball and 38 with the bat.
a bothamesque allrounder in the making!

New zealand doing a pakistan here and batting at snails pace and allowing bowlers to settle which brings its own pressure, you dont have to try and blast bowlers out of the attack but just blocking for sake of blocking doesnt help either. Lets see state of pitch once both teams have batted once, Pakistan need another good session to real put pressure on N.Z

Well at least I am getting to watch Williamson bat instead of Azhar.

Not batting much different from Azhar though.
Joke aside I expect a masterclass from Williamson today after failing in ODI and T20s.

Test is his best format. And currently the best test batsman in my opinion (Smith is banned)

Williamson and Root showing why they are in the fab four of this era.

Wonderfully crafted knock by Williamson against a top bowling attack.

Azhar Ali and Williamson :o

Willy scoring at a SR of ~55 even after 3 wickets were gone with sheer class. I doubt Azhar would have played with this rate in such circumstances.

Sure? Kolhi has scored 50% more test runs and twice the number of test 100s ( most of those in SA and Eng) than anyone else in last 12 months.

True and same here.

Best test batsman in the world right now that Smithy is absent.

All 3, minus Smith, are a class above the rest in tests these days.

So Imam is injured again?

This guy has injured himself too much in the last 3 months

Abbas' can get tons of wickets but his legacy as a world class bowler will be defined if he takes wickets of top class batsmen. Mohammad Asif made Ponting, Pietersen, Laxman, Sehwag look like bunnies which is why he is more fondly remembered. Abbas must also do the same and get Williamson out on a consistent basis.

Kane Williamson is the best test batsman in the world by a mile. A treat to watch.

Good point. Abbas still is excellent though.
