Pakistan finish on 223/9 at Stumps on Day 2 of the second Test vs England

It is. Ball is shaping in air but not much off the wicket. We have got perverted watching 350+ ODI innings, otherwise most of the Tests in 80s & 90s on this track would have gone to distance, many ending in draws. If this this difficult then people need to watch Gooch’s 154* at Leeds against Ambrose, Marshall, Walsh & Bishop.

Difference being home batsmen are brought up on those pitches, so Gooch had an advantage.

The match that my former classmate Athers is talking about, at the Montgomery Biscuit Factory in Sahiwal in late 1987.......

That’s the match in which Mushtaq Ahmed emerged. He was still in his teens, but I think he took 6-87 from memory, and it was obvious that a star had arrived.

Sorry but hilarious :)))

Rizwan needs to speed up a little .......... too cautious.
He’s doing fine . It’s a very small session before they go for lunch again at 1.30. He’s trying to get singles where he again and at the moment leaving most outside off stump.

It’s test cricket . There is no such thing as being cautious in these conditions against this bowling attack .

Wrong! He took 6-81. My memory is going!

Looks like seaming conditions all the way. Pak will do well here if they scramble to 250 somehow

Rizwan needs a boundary from the middle of the bat .......

I think they been instructed not to lose a wicket in this session and only score on bad balls which there are hardly any from this professional bowling set up., so he is playing according to script.

It’s why Athers is so open-minded about Pakistan.

We were both Manchester Grammar boys.

He was a year above me, but he did his O levels in 5 years and I did mine in 4, so we were in the Sixth Form together.

He went up to Cambridge in 1986, but played for Lancashire in the summer holidays, and so from 1988 Big Was was his team-mate.

Athers grew up playing the same university matches v the counties that a decade earlier Imran Khan and Majid Khan has played in. But they played for Oxford and he played for Cambridge.

Was that not in a practise match?

They were deadly serious matches.

That team in Sahiwal featured Aamir Sohail, Saleem Malik, Anil Dalpat, Akram Raza, Mushie and Saleem Jaffer.

Plus Zahoor Elahi, who should have had a great career.

This pair is trying to play out till lunch, which isn’t a bad idea. Weather should get better as well. These breaks gave England an added advantage.

Yes, but it puts batsmen under too much pressure. Unless you are misbah, you are bound to crack.

Commentators praising Babar. I am worried they will jinx him :)

He does look good — relatively comfortable in really difficult conditions.

And because of these stupid playing condition rules they are going to have to go off for lunch in five minutes and then have to play himself in all over again. Totally ridiculous

It's just so frustrating after the lunch they to have to restart everything again. So so frustrating for batting side

May be, though I couldn’t say that about PAK batsmen against Herath. A tough condition is a tough condition and a good bowler is a good bowler- be in home or away. All four WIN pacers that game played most of their career in Counties, hence it was their home condition as well.

It is quite stupid to have lunch after just one hour of play. They should be utilising good weather as much as possible.

Well negotiated, first wicket less session of the series, though a short session. England must have came here to wrap up PAK batting or at least get well into tail, but well played Rizwan.

I hope the same Lunch break would have been scheduled had England been batting.....

DAY 2 - LUNCH

PAK 155/5 (61.0), CRR: 2.54

Babar 45* (111)
Rizwan 12* (37)

Anderson 19 - 5 - 40 - 2

Min. Overs Remaining: 68.0

This session was a test batting master class. Babar and Rizwan played almost nothing outside off stump on good length, defended the balls on the off stump well and milked the balls on legside or middle as well if we talk about Babar.

Under these conditions, didnt give a single chance or had any appeal which is commendable.

Loving how Babar has remained patient and nudged away any offline ball to keep scoreboard ticking over. Hope he continues like this after lunch as at least 230 will be needed to keep Pak in the game.

i would be really interested to find out which team has benefited the most from the constant breaks. they are annoying and we all know batsmen can lose their wickets after them.

Absolutely, this is what test cricket is all about. Weather the storm then cash in when the sun shines.

This is the slowest I’ve seen Babar in Test cricket. Hope he goes on to convert this start into a big one. But I highly doubt that it would happen, partly because of the conditions and partly because he doesn’t really have nothing much to work with from the other end.

Its probably part of the game but, definitely Eng benefited from the constant breaks. You can have your two best bowlers in Anderson and Broad be ready to go time and time again after each break. It can be easily seen from number of overs Anderson has bowled (19 overs!) out of total overs. It wouldnt have been possible so early in the match without these constant breaks.

Really need Rizwan to get a decent score. It will just give us that bit more trust in him and it will give him confidence. He is doing a good job as keeper. Just needs to contribute more with the bat regularly now and we have a very good player.

You guys watching the videos of kids playing cricket and training their skills?

This is the main difference between Pakistan and England...

Michael Holding on England bowling, on Sky Sports

"I don’t think they have been able to control the amount of movement they have been getting. They have been struggling a bit with their lines – so many occasions we have seen balls pitching outside off stump and exaggerated movement away from the right-hander. That tells the bowler in his mind that I have to be a little bit straighter. But when they bowl straighter the ball doesn’t do anything so they get worked through the on-side."

"I think they need to do what Woakes has done on occasion. Jump a little bit wider on the crease, slant the ball into the right-hander. He will see the ball coming in and have to play so you have a chance of getting an outside edge. You can’t continuously think you are going to bowl a magic ball and pitch it leg stump and hit off stump."

A tremendous amount of runs have been scored on the leg-side and Michael Holding on Sky Sports says England need to give the bowlers more protection...

"There are too many runs being scored on the leg-side with bowlers looking for this magic ball. There are three fielders on the on-side so there are huge gaps for the batsmen to score. You could take out extra-cover and let the batsman think ‘I can drive through that big gap’ and give the bowler a bit more protection if he does stray onto the pads."

Thank you. Finally someone posted this. Don’t see much point loitering about in these conditions with four slips and a gully waiting.

Would say that MR and BA should both start going for it soon as they have seen a few balls. Also, no Archer or Wood which means advancing down the pitch, trying different things should be slightly les risky. All 4 bowlers are swing/seam (line and length bowlers) so no harm in trying to throw them off. After all, they did to us, albeit in spin friendly conditions.

After lunch now, I expect a pick up . I won't be one to slate them if they get out when they should be leaving.
I can see them getting castigated which is why they were probably being extra circumspect

Will England be regretting not playing one of Wood and Archer?

Michael Holding speaking on Sky Cricket:

"I always like to have at least one man in my team that that when the opposition batsmen go to bed at night they think ‘that man is dangerous. He might not get me out but he might hurt me’. There is no one like that in the England team here. They need someone like that in this team, whether it is Archer or Wood. They need a bit of extra pace."

Yep him and shadab at 6 and 7 should be the way forward.
The shadab impact in innings one of the last game is very understated.

Both busy players

yeah we need to get over 200 to have any sort of chance..

So Broad and Anderson have had a nice cup of tea, put their feet up and should be ready to go again..

I actually like Younus just standing behind the batsmen before they walk on to the field. Does not look like the batsmen and he are in conversation, just a presence. Man I miss him...

they have been lucky with the breaks. Just annoying. In the first test when Babar was going great we had a break and that was that. If we had had a longer session i think Babar would have smashed them..pity..

I hope BA and MR just knuckle down. They have to get us over the 200..the rest are not going to do much..

Shadab has a lot to do to convince me.

Fair enough. But he’s got enough to work with (as in there is enough ability there but it needs to be honed technically and mentally). As opposed to say someone like Ifti Chacha. Plus, time on his side.

Pakistan should play aggressive cricket in this session after the first half hour of the session. In the first half-hour, they should try to settle in and get set again.
