Pakistan General Elections 2024 - The ins/outs and mechanics

so millions wasted on elections from a country near bankruptcy very insightful

Agree. No point of holding them. Once Nawaz saab was given the green light in to Pakistan with his frauduant cases evicted, there was always going to be one outcome.

When you have a party that couldn't win 20 legitimate seats, a party where all the leadership got smashed, and then claims it won because Establishment fears for his own future and uses them, then as a country you have no chance. NS had the chance to make up for his mistakes and come out and say, the country has spoken and IK has our support. Let's work together on constitutional issues such as COAS extension, which should be banned.
Since Establishment hates IK and PTI, i think Nawaz might give extension to coas.

So you don't describe any murderers, kidnapper, and other thug as a lunatic but only this guy. Is it because those evil guys are the " We" you referred to. You must feel humiliated this week. All your sacred cows slaughtered
Whatever those guys are is a separate subject

This guy Sheikh Marwat is an absolute lunatic.

But he slapped someone in anger and obviously that is wrong but why have you never ever condemned the evil committed on Pks by the " we"

Since Hafiz sb hates IK and PTI, i think Nawaz might give him an extension. Until hafiz sb leaves the coas post i think IK will be in jail.
But he will have to leave office. Gen Sharif left with dignity intact.

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif on Friday made a so-called ‘victory speech’ and announced forming a coalition government on the previous PDM pattern to steer the country out of crises.

Mr Sharif hinted at joining hands with the PPP, JUI-F, MQM, PML-Q and IPP to forge a PDM (Pakistan Democratic Movement) style alliance, but did not make any claim to reach out to the PTI-backed independent candidates to take them on board.

His relative, Ishaq Dar, however claimed that the party had the intention to have the independents onboard to form the government both in the Centre and Punjab.

Interestingly, Nawaz Sharif declared the PML-N the ‘single largest party’ that emerged in the Centre and Punjab in the polls. He along with Shehbaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz made the so-called victory speech at the party headquarters in Model Town at the time when the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declared that the PML-N had won only 64 national assembly seats of total 265 on Friday.

Mr Sharif mandated his younger brother, Shehbaz Sharif, to immediately establish contacts with the PPP’s Asif Ali Zardari, the JUI-F’s Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the MQM’s Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui to forge an alliance in the Centre.

However, he did not name any PTI’s leader in this regard. Before Nawaz Sharif’s speech, the PML-N’s Atta Tarar had lashed out at PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, saying he had told him (Bilawal) to pack up as a Nawaz’ worker would defeat him. Tarar has clinched victory against Bilawal in NA-127.

Without naming PTI founder leader Imran Khan, Nawaz said: “Some people are in a mood to fight but Pakistan cannot afford this as it needs stability for at least 10 years. This is not our responsibility alone as everyone, including the institutions, should play its role for the betterment of the country.”

Justifying his victory speech a day after the polls, Nawaz said he wanted to make the speech on Thursday night but by that time only 10 to 12pc results were announced.

On Thursday night, Mr Sharif had left for Jati Umra amid reports of his party’s ‘poor performance’ in its heartland of Punjab.

Speaking to Dawn in London a day after polling, former PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said it would be bad advice for Nawaz Sharif to form a government.

“This 60-seat victory doesn’t suit the struggle of Mian Sahib or his democratic credentials of the last so many years. He will not be able to run a government without moral authority. This ‘victory’ doesn’t suit him.”

Mr Abbasi said the results had changed overnight in favour of the PML-N and it was a repeat of what had happened to his (PML-N) party in 2018.

“This is why I stayed away from this election. I realized six months ago that the PML-N would come to power under these circumstances. I don’t agree with keeping Imran Khan out of politics, even if I don’t agree with his politics.”

The former prime minister was all praise for the PTI-backed independents, saying they had pulled off a stunning upset, given that “they were not allowed to campaign and there was virtually no sign of them in most constituencies”.

“My friends in the PML-N in the Rawalpindi division admitted on Friday night that the election has slipped out of their hands. But today we see the results are different.”

Pakistan may face more economic misery if election result unclear

The possibility of a political stalemate in Pakistan leading to delays in both reforms and crucial foreign funding has sparked a selloff in its international bonds and fuelled analysts' fears of further economic misery for the country.

Results coming in from Thursday's election saw an unexpectedly strong showing for independents - mostly supporters of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan - trailed by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party of Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

Sharif has already claimed victory, but his party remains far short of the necessary number of seats to form a government on its own.

The election, which was itself much delayed, comes at a pivotal moment.

Pakistan is in an economic crisis, with dwindling foreign currency reserves that will be further strained by a $1 billion bond payment due in two months, while its $3 billion funding programme with the International Monetary Fund expires on April 12.

"Pakistan will be entering into more severe political and economic instability if no party emerges with a simple majority," said Sajid Amin of the Sustainable Development Policy Institute, a former adviser to the ministry of finance.

Bilawal says no formal talks on govt formation with anyone yet

In a recent statement, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, the Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), asserted that no formal discussions have taken place with any political party, including the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), regarding the government formation in Lahore.

During an interview with private channel Geo News on Saturday, Bilawal clarified, "So far, there have been no formal talks with either the PML-N, PTI, or any other political party." He emphasised the importance of awaiting the completion of the vote count in all constituencies before engaging in discussions about potential government alliances.

The PPP chairman expressed patience in anticipation of the official announcement of election results. He stated, "We are waiting for the completion of the vote count in all constituencies, and the results to be unveiled."

Preceding the elections, the Central Executive Committee of the Pakistan Peoples Party nominated Bilawal as their candidate for prime minister. In response to this, he mentioned, "If we need to change this decision, we will once again convene the Central Executive Committee to decide collectively."

Bilawal highlighted the importance of establishing a 'political consensus' in the country, asserting that without such consensus, any government formed would face challenges in delivering effective governance.

He remarked, "Some informal contacts are present in our relationships, but so far, there has been no contact with the PTI bloc."

Parties vie to form government as no clear winner emerges

With no clear winner emerging as the vote count nears conclusion in the elections held on Thursday, political parties have launched efforts to form a coalition government.

Former three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, in an address to supporters in Lahore Friday night, claimed clinching most seats as a party and called to form a unity government after contacting allies.

In this regard, his younger brother and former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, met Pakistan People's Party leader and former President Asif Zardari to discuss the developments.

Results of 251 out of 266 general seats in the National Assembly show Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party-backed independent candidates are leading with 99 seats, followed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz with 71, PPP 54, and MQM 17, among others.

A party requires 169 seats in the 336-member lower house to form the government with a simple majority.

Incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan also claimed victory in a speech generated through AI, saying his party won a two-thirds majority.

PTI spokesman Rauf Hassan said they will form the federal government, as well as governments in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

But provisional results showed PTI-backed candidates may not be able to form a government on their own. The PTI has already lost its right over reserved seats, which boosts any party's chances to reach the magic number for political supremacy.

The independent candidates, however, have the option to join any party after the elections.

Reports indicated PTI-backed independents were planning to join the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM), a religious party.

But its leader Allama Abbas Nasir told Anadolu that there had been no such discussion. “I met Khan Sahab in jail on Feb. 6 ... We have supported Khan Sahab all along, they have supported us … but the PTI has other options too, and there have been no such discussions at all,” Abbas said over the phone from Islamabad.

“We neither offered them, neither have discussed it. But we are unconditionally supporting Khan Sahab," he added.

His party won one parliament seat, as final results are still trickling in.

I am sick of this farce. We never learn. This was a golden opportunity to set things right. Allow a democratically elected party their right to form government how hard is it.

Everything from politics to cricket is rotten to the core in Pakistan. I feel sorry for people that live there.

Why do you still support NS and PMLN despite of seeing what these criminals are capable of? Pakistanis must get rid of these filthy politicians

meanwhile pti fans are justifying the attack on Mohsin Dawar.

Really pathetic stuff

Another good discussion on Al Jazeera: PPP representitive on the show really struggling to justify his possition lolll

But he didn't push the country to the edge for an extension

Your establishment: either all of them are good, or all of them are bad. No picking and choosing.

And the evidence shows that while their faces change, the institution continues to use and abuse the host country for decades on end, so how can you give one of them a free pass?

Haven’t seen anyone justify it, but wasn’t he a part of the government when PTM activists were being kidnapped? (Not saying it didn’t happen during PTI’s tenure), Dawar was quite vocal in his support for PTM when he was in the opposition.

Despite international condemnation for their deplorable riggings, the military seems to be moving to the next stage of the rigging operation: software update of elected PTI-backed Independents and forcing them to join other parties so that the PTI can’t form a government.

It’s both a sad sight and an indictment against the establishment.

Lots of buying happening atm. As I said, PML and PPP will never let these guys slip away and will do every thing they can to make governments in NA and Punjab. PPP is already making a gov in Sindh so that is a safe way out for them. The main issue was Punjab and Nationals and PML and PPP are already throwing a lot of money to get these assemblies as well.

SC urged to order independents to join party within three days

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court to bind the elected independent candidates to join a political party within three days of the official notification of their victory.

The petition has been filed two days after the general elections, the unofficial result of which shows PTI-backed independent candidates in clear majority in the National, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assemblies so far.

The application, filed by Advocate Moulvi Iqbal Haider on Saturday, argued that part of the national or provincial assemblies as an independent member should be unfair, illegal, unconstitutional and contrary to the parliamentary form of governance.

Interestingly, Mr Haider has a reputation for being a habitual litigant and had been barred from filing petitions in the Supreme Court in the past. In 2022, he was fined Rs100,000 by then IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah for filing a frivolous petition seeking the trial of former prime minister Imran Khan and others over the disclosure of the cipher contents.

In the fresh petition, Mr Haider highlighted that around 17,816 candidates participated in the Feb 8 general election, of which around 11,785 contested as independent candidates.

He urged the court to declare that assembly members elected as independent candidates are incompetent to participate in the process of reserved seat allocation unless they join a political party, the petitioner pleaded while citing Article 51 of the Constitution.

The said article outlines the procedure for determining the number of National Assembly seats and the functioning of the house.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should be ordered to declare that the seats won by independent members will become vacant if they fail to join the political party in time. The plea also sought orders for the ECP to issue notification of successful independent candidates with direction to join the political party within three days and issue notification of those members who join a party.

The petition argued that there is no mechanism in the Constitution allowing independent members — who don’t join a political party within the prescribed three-day period — to form the government.

Therefore, there is “a great apprehension that a constitutional crisis may occur” that might disrupt the democratic system.

According to Mr Haider, there is an imminent danger of a “constitutional crisis” if independent candidates do not join the political party since provisions of Article 63-A will not apply to them.

The said article defines the process of disqualifying an assembly member who violates the party’s policy.

The petitioner claimed that independent members may be able to participate in the elections of the speaker and the prime minister “by dictating their own terms and conditions to the political parties” in a position of forming the government. The members will also “take advantage” of their position by threatening to move a no confidence motion against the sitting prime minister or “dictating terms” during the enactment of laws.

The Islamabad Capital Territory Police has warned of action against any individuals or groups targeting state institutions and has imposed Section 144 in the federal capital.

The measures come after the PTI announced a countrywide protest against alleged rigging.

The spokesperson for the force said that peaceful protests is the right of citizens under the Constitution and all must obey the law. He urged the people to avoid illegal activities, adding that maintaining law and order was the force's top priority.

Nawaz, Shahbaz and Maryam are Destiny’s child right now. All the Independent ladies are throwing their hands to them

Isa was then Put in place to make sure of the smooth transition.

Like I said. Absolute Banana republic, and the followers of these corrupt leaches are even worse

Looks like among the provinces, the establishment has given Punjab to PML (N), Sindh to PPP and KPK to PTI.

By the way why are PML (N) called "Noon" league?

What’s the next line of propaganda? That their was rigging in the election wins of those IND candidates who won and joined PMLN?

By the way why are PML (N) called "Noon" league?
Noon is a letter in Urdu alphabet like N in English and I suppose 'Na' in Hindi.

In Pakistan splinter political parties often take the name of the parent party and add a letter on at the end.

So there is PLM'N', Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz or Noon League. There is also PML'Q' - Pakistan Muslim League Qaid or Qaaf league.

Similarly there are variants to all of the major parties.

The politicians and the establishment are just an extension of many of the general public.

I don't know why anyone is surprised with the independent candidates switching sides. The only hope and this a very slim hope at best is that the next generation when they mature and as these old guys die out they change the system. But I just see it, the country is just rotten to the core.

I know so many Pakistanis who go abroad on student visas but never study a day. The work illegally leaching from the system contributing nothing in terms of taxes and other integration. Pakistanis will buy off the poor for 2000, 3000, 5000 rupees, peanuts for the middle and upper class. They vote based on caste rather than mandate.

Be honest - do you guys think the only crooks and corrupt people are the ones at the top?

This applies to all walks of society. In large parts, corruption has made the west to actually what it is today and still does.

PML-N ‘offers’ presidency, NA speakership, Senate chairmanship to PPP

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has ‘offered’ presidency, NA speakership and Senate chairmanship to Pakistan People’s Party, to get support for the formation of governments in centre and Punjab, ARY News reported, citing sources.

According to the inside story of the meeting between the Pakistan People’s Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leadership to finalize the matters of forming a unity government as no party gained a simple majority after the Feb 8 elections.

Sources claimed that PML-N has offered three constitutional positions to the PPP to gain its support in centre and Punjab. PPP was offered positions of president, speaker National Assembly and Senate chairman, while PML-N also agreed to give Balochistan CM ship to the Bilawal-led party.

Furthermore, PML-N also reportedly offered deputy CM ship or the position of senior minister in Punjab.

Both parties have agreed to continue negotiations after discussing the matter in the CECs meeting.

Earlier, former Sindh chief minister Murad Ali Shah asserted that Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) would decide on allying with a political party to form government in Centre.

Talking exclusively to ARY News, Murad Ali Shah said that Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto will take their opinion on allying with the Central Executive Committee.

Muttahida Quami Movement-Pakistan (MQM) has ‘demanded’ Sindh governorship from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, ARY News reported, citing sources.

A meeting between the MQM-Pakistan delegation led by party chief Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and PML-N leaders was held at Sahrif’s Jati Umra residence near Lahore.

Shehbaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and other PML-N leaders were present in the meeting. According to the inside story of the meeting, MQM-P demanded Sindh governorship from PML-N, in return for support in the centre.

The meeting that lasted for about 50 minutes between leaders of both parties agreed to move forward with consensus.

The MQM-P leadership also demanded to take them on the federally-run development work in Karachi.

The meeting came as leaders from a number of major political parties held meetings before the completion of counting of votes, apparently in the hopes of gathering sufficient numbers to form governments in the Centre and the four provinces.

I don't want a coalition between PML-N and MQM-P. First, MQM-P has to change the name of their party.

Breaking down the Nine Zero gang was already an achievement of Nawaz Sharif.

No talks held on forming next govt, says MQM’s Khalid Maqbool after meeting with PML-N

MQM-Pakistan Convener Khalid Maqbool has said that discussions during a meeting with the PML-N delegation did not involve any talks about forming the next government.

Speaking to reporters in Karachi, Siddiqui said the elections have created a challenging situation and all parties must play their role in steering the country out of crisis.

“The stability of democracy is more important than anything else,” he said. He insisted no discussion has yet taken place regarding the formation of the government.

Siddiqui said it also not yet confirmed whether the MQM would get any share in the government or not.

His remarks came shortly after the PML-N released a statement saying that the two parties had reached a “principle agreement” to work together in the upcoming government.

“We will work together in the interest of the country and public,” the statement had said, adding that basic points had been agreed upon by the two parties.

PML-N leader Azam Nazeer Tarar has said that the party has conducted extensive consultations and formed a legal team to address rigging allegations, emphasising the party’s stance to defend its case in court.

Speaking to reporters, the former law minister clarified that PML-N’s Khawaja Saad Rafique’s electoral defeat does not automatically prompt the party to play victim card and approach the courts.

Criticising the PTI, Tarar accused it of habitually fabricating falsehoods to create an illusion of truth.
