Pakistan General Elections 2024 - The ins/outs and mechanics

Absolute nuts manipulation. Many results vote count doesn't even match that of the final announced result.

no one.

PTI is winning unofficially with alot of seats which is why results are not being shown and delayed.

But the manipulated results is what will decide who wins and gets the PM seat.

As of now, Nawaz is losing on both of his NA seats, so most likely Nawaz is not gonna be the PM.
Thank you Major Saab

i think in a few hours we will be seeing nawaz winning his seat aswel...

well well well, now Nawaz Shareef is winning and Dr. Yasmin is losing.

So the rigging has started.

oh well, thats the end of the elections. It looks like Nawaz Sharif will be doing his speech by night.

He is going to be the most hated PM ever of this country if he decides to take up.

Barrister Gohar has been very slow and passive. He has been a complete misfit for the pti chairman role.

Only reason to delay the results.
Now results are coming that are complete opposite with PMLN leading in the country.

No matter how many votes you casted. At the end behind closed doors and in darkness results were made.

Mustafa Nawaz Khokar:

I have no shame in saying that I openly admit my defeat. It is sad to see that PTI candidate Ali Bukhari has been defeated in Constituency 48 Islamabad seat while he was clearly winning. Those mentioned have been declared as having changed the result

If he has any ounce of dignity left then he should retire

lol at these establishments. They will destroy whatever is left of this country

Atleast the best thing about PPP is that they dont allow guys like PMLN to dare to do rigging in that area. They just cant enter there.

PMLN only had punjab to pull of there rigging. I wont be surprised if by afternoon they adust PMLN to 130 seats of Punjab alone for NA

The returning officers have been threaten to change the results according to videos posted on twitter

The establishment continues to dilute whatever respect they have remaining amongst the population. What's the point of holding onto power in this manner?! What benefit is there in running a country's affairs when it's clear as daylight you neither have the competence or the public's mandate?

Step aside and make life easier for yourself. Is the establishment so thick that it cannot see it's hurting itself?

Pakistan has an establishment which occupies it.

how? who is going to hold them accountable? they control economy, foreign policy and armed to the teeth.

Majority of the people have voted PTI. Meaning they completely oppose them, their actions, and their poodles. Yet manipulation of the highest order is taking place.

no one is accountable in Pakistan. Forget establishment , even the MNAs and ministers dont face accountability.

We had a a PTI minister ( who has left them now) called Ghulam Sarwar that ended up destroying PIA because he made a statement in national assembly that our pilots have fake license. He was the aviation minister.

EU took notice of that statement and banned PIA.

Was Ghulam Sarwar held accountable? No he was not. He infact became a turncoat for the establishment. There is no accountability here.

Very low quality level of rigging.
you know, had it been by a few votes, would had been justifiable in the sense that benefit of the doub could had been given.

But the way they turned the results in favor of PMLN is just hilarious.

Look at the form of the area where Nawaz Shareef won. All other candidates got 0 votes, like really?

Congratulations to Nawaz Sharif.

Since he was brought back this result was a foregone conclusion.

Maryam nawaz criticizing Media.

GEO and ARY are not having it, saying that we know the actual results so lets be realistic and not lose focus

There were some big seats pretty much confirmed lost last night and I woke up to videos of them celebrating

Hafiz Saab tries his best to make Nawaz Sharif win. Very embarrassing election. Imran Khan has shown that he would easily have a 2/3 majority in parliament.

granted. the question still remains. what are the consequences to the establishment?

Keep your eye on the more cavalier parts of Pakistan - like KPK. They might say enough is enough and do a Bangladesh.

Punjab and Sindh are hopeless sheep.

Nah. Bangladesh was capable of supporting itself economimcally. KPK? unlikely. whois going to sponsor KPK? who is going to play IG?

Bangladesh had its elections recently and the main opposition boycotted it as they did in 2014 and 2018

Some foreign political analysts were bemused why they woulld boycott when the majority support them (or rather hate the ruling AL)
It is because the gov controls army, police and they would rig the votes if the opposition started winning, so opposition thought better to not waste time in campaigning and just boycott it

Still, much rather the govt controls the army rather than the other way around.

That's what Bangladesh wanted in 1971 and got it.

Guess what, i voted for PTI in Na -53 infact alot of people voted for PTI even in NA- 54 of rawalpindi people voted for Sheriyar riaz of PTI.

Suddenly the mood has changed on Twitter

Pakistan’s Military Used Every Trick to Sideline Imran Khan—and Failed. Now What?

He’s been shot, jailed, had his political party effectively banned, and name purged from mainstream media. But you just can’t keep Imran Khan down.

Preliminary results from Thursday’s election in Pakistan seem to show that independent candidates affiliated with Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party have a chance of securing a plurality of legislative seats despite myriad irregularities, which continued through polling day, designed to hobble such an outcome.

The PTI already had its famed cricket-bat logo banned, and a nationwide suspension of cellphone networks on Thursday hindered party officials from informing supporters of their preferred independent candidate for each constituency. (The government claimed the blackout was for security reasons despite such measures being deemed illegal by Pakistan’s High Court.) In addition, exit polls were banned and the PTI complained that their agents were barred from monitoring polling stations. “The amount of rigging going on is beyond ridiculous,” Zulfi Bukhari, a former Minister of State under Khan, tells TIME.

Still, when results finally started trickling in—over 10 hours later than customary, which in itself observers say is highly suspicious—the PTI was neck and neck with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of three-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, with the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, son of assassinated ex-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, in third place.

Sharif is the preferred candidate of Pakistan’s powerful military, which, despite backing his ouster thrice in the past, recently allowed the 74-year-old back from exile in the U.K., quashed his corruption conviction, and repealed his lifetime ban from politics. Sharif’s speedy rehabilitation stood in stark contrast to the generals’ Khan-and-PTI purge.

“No one rules without the tacit support of the military,” says Maya Tudor, an associate professor of government and public policy at Oxford University. “What's different this time is how overtly the military is targeting the PTI, because they have grassroots support and are technologically savvy.”

Yet even if the PTI against all odds secures a plurality of legislative seats, many obstacles to forming a government remain.

Since its lawmakers are officially independents, there’s no obligation for them to vote along party lines for key appointments, raising the prospect of coerced defections. Moreover, the PTI is not eligible to its share of the National Assembly’s 70 “reserved seats” for women and minorities that are divvied up according to a party’s proportion of the overall vote. And then there’s the fact that Khan, 71, remains in prison and was unable to stand as a lawmaker himself. Even before the vote, there were widespread rumors of a power-sharing pact between the PML-N and PPP, with Sharif serving as prime minister and Zardari as president. A coalition between the two remains the most likely outcome.

Still, the strength of PTI’s showing is a bloody nose for Pakistan’s military, which previously backed Khan before his 2018 election victory. However, the generals fell out spectacularly with the former national cricket captain and engineered his ouster in an April 2022 no-confidence vote. Since then, Khan has survived an assassination attempt and weathered a tsunami of over 180 legal challenges. In recent weeks alone, he received prison sentences totaling 31 years for corruption, leaking state secrets, and having an “un-Islamic” marriage.

Yet his popularity remained strong leading up to the vote, especially among young Pakistanis, with voters aged 18-35 comprising 45% of the nearly 130 million-strong electorate. “It's very clear that the military was nervous and then to see PTI exceed expectations is absolutely a big blow,” says Michael Kugelman, director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center.

The Pakistani public and political class now await the full results and, no doubt, much horse-trading to come. The nuclear-armed nation of 240 million can little afford a power vacuum with whoever ends up taking the top job facing no shortage of crises. Pakistanis are suffering with Asia’s highest inflation, which reached 29.7% year-over-year in December. The South Asian nation only narrowly avoided a sovereign default last summer due to a $3 billion IMF bailout and a new deal by next month is thought essential to avoid economic collapse.

Pakistan also faces an increasingly tense security situation on its borders. Despite strong historic ties with the Afghan Taliban, Islamabad has recently fallen out with Kabul over cross-border terrorist attacks and Pakistan’s expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees, many of whom have lived inside the country for decades. And last month, Pakistan and Iran exchanged ***-for-tat air strikes on alleged militant bases on each other's territory. What’s more, Islamabad recently accused India of running an assassination campaign inside its territory, further fraying ties with its historic nemesis to the east.

And presuming Pakistan’s military continues to pursue its goal of shutting the PTI out of power, the question remains how PTI supporters will react to their disenfranchisement, not least given the grim state of the economy. On May 9, PTI supporters ransacked military premises in response to an earlier, fleeting arrest of Khan. He may remain behind bars, but Thursday’s election shows the sporting icon is far from done as a political force.

“The military wants the next government to focus on economic recovery and clearly hoped it could put the Imran Khan genie back into the bottle by having him in jail for a few years,” says Kugelman. “But the challenges are only going to grow because the PTI base will only become more aggrieved.”

Maryam Nawaz breaks silence on Elections 2024 results

Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) Senior Vice President and PML-N Chief Organizer Maryam Nawaz Sharif finally broke the silence on the results of Elections 2024 and said that PMLN emerged as the single largest party in centre.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Maryam Nawaz Sharif said: “As opposed to the false perception deliberately built by a section of media last night, PMLN, Alhamdulillah emerging as the single largest party in the centre and in Punjab.”

Maryam Nawaz said: “Some results awaited. MNS will head to PMLN HQ for the victory speech as soon as the final results are received. Insha’Allah. Stay tuned.”

The post came after the criticism on the social media platforms that questioned PMLN's silence when the results started pouring in showing the results in favour of independents on national assembly seats contrary to the perception that PMLN will win.

Former federal finance minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader, Ishaq Dar, disclosed that independent candidates have reached out to the party. He emphasized that the PML-N stands as the predominant party in the National Assembly seats from Punjab.

During media interactions, he affirmed PML-N's lead in the election results, emphasizing their continuous advantage as the results unfolded. Regarding delays in result announcements, the PML-N leader acknowledged the shutdown of mobile phone networks the previous day, refraining from complaints.

Supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan had the edge on Friday in Pakistan's election results from over 100 seats, local media said, after vote counts were hit by unusual delays that the government ascribed to a suspension of mobile phone services.

Independents, who mostly owe allegiance to Khan, had won 47 of 106 seats for which it had results. A total of 265 seats were contested in Thursday's election.

The NA result is irreverent now. Because from the provincial seats all the main chunk of reserves will go to PMLN. THere are 60 seats in reserves.

PTI wont be getting the reserve seats and they will more probably adjust atleast 40-50 to PMLN.

It seems PMLN will take the reserve seats, take Baluchistan and MQM with them.

The other option to tackle this if PPP comes with an alliance with PTI. This will depend on Imran Khan, and Imran will have to come to his senses here.

This is the basic right of any candidate to get the results. ECP is making a mockery of itself by doing unnecessary delays and trying to rig the elections like they have already done in come areas.
There is no basic right to incite violence. I don’t see PMLN and PPP politicians showing impatience and inciting violence.

Be patient, you will get your PM in the next 12-24 hours

Can you tell the positive impact allying with a dead party that's restricted to a single province will have on PTI? PPP is on its way out if the public keeps itself informed from now on. The internet has played a big part in their demise, it's only gonna get worse as time goes on.

PPP will do what it does best and it will try to grab as many independent candidates via blackmail and bribery as it can, with the help of the establishment of course.

Is the ECP website down for anyone else? It's not opening on my end.

Look at the bright side. Nawaz Sharif has a good relationship with Modi, trade relations will resume between the two countries if PMLN is back.

I've always respected the Sher for taking on the Establisment several times in the past.

PPP is a party, has numbers to challenge PMLN somewhat and also bring in a few reserves. PTI has KNOWN.

PTI cant do anything with independants because the reserve seats that will be adjusted in NA will be done on the basis of PARTY performance in provincial.

So if PTI wants to sit on opposition, than the opposition is going to be automatic alliance between PPP and PTI as PPP already said they wont be joining the govt with PMLN.

If PTI wants to be in the govt, the only way is joining hands with PPP. Or else, PTI has already lost the election here

no no and no.

PMLN will not have a majority that will allow bills to be passed on trades.
