Islamabad's High Court has reportedly been asked to decide whether Black Friday shopping campaigns run "contrary to Islamic teachings".

A petitioner asked judges to rule on whether the term should be outlawed in Pakistan due to negative connotations.

They made Pakistan's government a party to the complaint, according to reports in local media.

The petitioner wrote: "Friday has religious significance for Muslims. Therefore calling it ‘black’ is a crime.

"According to the dictionary, Black Friday means ill-fated or black day. Hence, the court must ban celebration of Black Friday on 24 November in Pakistan."

The Daily Times reported that a prominent lawyer, Azhar Siddique, had written separately to high-ranking members of the government to ask them to block any official endorsements of the Black Friday phenomenon.

He suggested businesses could use "Bright Friday" to advertise deals instead.

The Daily Times quoted Chaudhry Abdul Ghafoor, chief of Pakistan's Tourism Development Corporation, as saying: "It is disgusting that some business tycoons are bringing Friday a bad name of ‘black’ just to blindly follow the West for increasing their business.

"Friday is a gift for Muslims, which is a holy, blessed, and virtuous day."

I don't really see the point of using an alternative phrase such as Bright Friday. This would give a positive connotation to consumerism and mindless spending created by a company situated in the non-Islamic USA. Surely Black Friday is a more suitable name to associate with this irreligious trend that has besmirched the Islamic holy day?

Must be a slow news day in the UK... if a petition in the IHC makes it to the news.

There are plenty of such airy fairy petitions everyday of the week in Pakistan. I remember there was once a guy who put in a petition for SC to make him PM because he was an honest, hardworking guy.

This country's a joke, gotta be offended over every little thing. The day the Pakistani govt stops controlling peoples live, that will be a good day in the history of mankind.

Also tying blackness with negativity and brightness with holiness and virtue actually has racist undertones if you think about it.

At least that guy would have better than NS.

I think its called Black because of the accounting. The businesses which are in red (loss) want to go back to black (profit) using sales starting from Friday after Thanksgiving so they called it "Black Friday".

Also Black is a colour just like other colours.
The holiest place in Islam is Kaaba in Mecca and the cloth that covers it (called Kiswah; Pakistanis called it Ghilaf-e-Kaaba) is of black colour.
The holiest relic in Islam is the Black Stone (Ḥajr-e-Aswad) set in a corner of Kaaba.

We Pakistanis need to stop obsessing over such petty things

Pakistan is slowly becoming a country where majority of people are hypocrites. They like to use western technology but not the west itself. They will gladly come to places like UK, USA and Europe but they will secretly curse them for what it is. They want freedom of expression so that they can bluntly spread hatred in their little communities while at the same time they will complain about people like Tomy Robinson and organisations like EDL. They can declare anyone a Kafir and yet they will expect that all their rights will be preserved. I’m sick of watching what is happening in Pakistan right now. The Mullahs hate west then how about not sending their children to study in western countries. How about not watching TV because it is invented by the west. How about not using their bulletproof cars because if my knowledge is correct then these bulletproof cars are also developed by the West.

:))

You have to be quite creative to come up with issues like this. Embarrassing.

What's funny is that many of these rich mullahs will line up in America for the biggest sales.

Definitely does, which is why for last 2 years, stores in Dubai publicly advertise a "white Friday" sale during Thanksgiving...

tsk tsk, this fisaad is also because of religion..

Never understood why desis in general conjure up this black Friday = insulting Friday which is a holy day for Muslims. The Kaabah is also draped in black cloth and the corner stone called Hijr e Aswad literally translates to the Black Stone.

So if the religion has nothing against using this color as a descriptive or otherwise, why do these few farigh people cry foul? Then again, don't seem like the people to read into anything.

Moreover black was used to identift Muslims before green in times of the Prophet.

Why would Pakistanis complain about Tommy Robinson or the EDL? Most of them wouldn't know who they are.

What do you mean we are “slowly becoming” a hypocrite nation, I think we have been like that for decades now.

Started some nice the hanging of ZAB and continues to worsen with time.
