What's new

Pakistan reach 8/1 (trail by 354) at Stumps on Day 3 of 2nd Test against New Zealand

Look how 2021 has begun :virat1

And y’all was celebrating when 2020 finished :babar

Is Shan Masood still the captain of Multan for PSL? If yes, then Qalandars have good company for most dumb franchise.

Jamieson is turning into nz Cummins. Stealing limelight from boult and southee, the same way Cummins stole starc and hazlewoods

Pakistan need to move on , I would like to see another opener for next series. enough chances for shan so far

Shan was the best Pakistani batsman on the tour to SA in 2019. Sadly this has been a complete horror series for him where he has lost confidence big time and will be dropped deservedly. Let's see if he can bounce back from this going forward in domestic cricket

The sad part is that we don’t have any good options

It’s just turned 6 am here and I am so glad that I prioritised a full night’s sleep over this.

Champion performance. And the best part is, give this exact same venue and line-up to our management and XI again next week. Both will run the exact same “plans” and be just as good in their “execution”.

One thing to lose. Another to get a monumental drubbing. Another still to get one and not know where they are lacking, to put it politely.

Going into shell is asking for trouble Shan bhai going the Ahmed Shehzad way.....tuk tuking fine but u must b positive .....

Abid survives for now. He'll get out this over though by the looks of it.

outplayed and outclassed in all aspects. bashed like minnows in both batting and bowling - this match reminded me of playing school cricket against a weaker school team. NZ could get Shan Abid out early umpire (school teacher brings them back to have another go) and they will get out cheaply again :shan

Jamieson is turning into nz Cummins. Stealing limelight from boult and southee, the same way Cummins stole starc and hazlewoods

Cummins was a teenage prodigy who was always seen as the best of the lot. He was just constantly injured.

Shan Masood thinks he is Alaistair Cook but he is actually worse than Imran Farhat.
What an insult to Imran Farhat who was as talented and fluent as they come. He just didnt have the temperament and the brains but wasnt as talentless as Shaan the english speaker.

Most countries struggle in overseas test matches, it's ok, esp for Asian sides in SENA and vice versa.

Only improvement Pak shuld try to do is pick test match specialist bowlers for away conditions, matches will look competitive when you keep taking 20 opposition wickets. Batting will come good at times so you will win/ draw few games.

Naseem was a failure in AUS, so he should have not been picked for this tour. Amir and Wahab retirement has hurt you folks badly while touring places like AUS/ NZ.

Woah, this turned into a test match that is exactly the stuff of dreams where you sit and idly build up a scenario of dishing phainti on the opposition team.

Poor Pakistan. I am sad to see this. They have always had a strong bowling unit until now but it’s hard to watch them get belted for 650.

Now NZ appear to have a Garner type bowler in Jamison. All they need is a good spinner.

Who took Masood the egg producing machine in the team? Why not Sami Aslam? He wasn't doing bad

We need a new test team. We should only keep Babar Azam, Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi,
Fawad Alam and Nazim Shah for Test team, all others are garbage and should be replaced.

Shan masood was contentdor for captaincy according to posters here

Whatever happened to Zafar Gohar? Was told he’s a solid spinner etc.

Regardless of whether he is good enough, in hindsight it would have been better to play Yasir and get it over with.

Instead he now gets the South Africa series at home.

day42.JPG

It was another dominant day for New Zealand in the second Test against Pakistan in Christchurch, as captain Kane Williamson scored his fourth double-century and the hosts posted a mammoth 659/6 declared.

Williamson and Henry Nicholls had already done the damage on day two, putting on 215 on the second day. The duo extended that partnership to a massive 359 for the fourth wicket to form the bedrock of New Zealand’s dominant first-innings display. Williamson ended up on 238 – his third-highest Test score – Nicholls reached 157, and with Daryl Mitchell scoring his maiden Test ton as well, New Zealand had a lead of 362.

There was still time for their bowlers to have a go at the tired Pakistan batsmen during an eventful final leg of the day. Kyle Jamieson, who picked up a five-for in the first innings, was at it again, dismissing Shan Masood for nought. He thought he had Abid Ali, the other opener, dismissed as well, only for the dismissal to be overturned on review. Pakistan ended the day on 8/1, a deficit of 354.

The scale of the Williamson and Nicholls’ domination for a majority of the day is best expressed through statistics: it was the first triple-century partnership by a New Zealand pair against Pakistan in Test history, and in the list of New Zealand’s highest Test partnerships, only two stands were worth more than the 369 put on by Williamson and Nicholls.

The knocks were all class too, and that was symbolised by the manner in which the Pakistan fielders rushed to batsmen to offer their congratulations soon after dismissing them. The duo batted through the whole first session, and the stand was broken only early in the second, when Nicholls top-edged one off Abbas. BJ Watling (7) was dismissed cheaply as well, but there was no reprieve for Pakistan as Mitchell partnered Williamson with New Zealand looking to plunder more runs.

By this stage, New Zealand had over 450 on board, and Pakistan’s bowlers were tired. Mitchell and Williamson upped the ante, their 133-run partnership for the sixth wicket coming off just 163 balls. Williamson brought up his double-century during that stand – it was his fourth in Test cricket, and put him level with Brendon McCullum among New Zealand players with the most double-tons – and at the other end, Mitchell kept pace, scoring his half-century off just 71 deliveries.

The boundaries increased in frequency, and it didn’t relent even after Williamson finally holed out off Faheem Ashraf, caught at third man. Jamieson partnered Mitchell, and the duo kept going. Mitchell had luck on his side, when he was caught at mid-wicket only for the umpire to deny the wicket due to a no-ball for height. Williamson was happy to wait till Mitchell got his ton, and as soon as he reached the mark – off just 112 balls – the captain signalled declaration.

Pakistan’s batsmen then faced 11 nervy overs, and they have a mountain to climb on the fourth day if they are to stay in this Test.

Well, I know that it's demoralizing to support a team whose team management has no desire to compete with the best in the world. It gets annoying how other teams are fixing problems from the get-go whereas we have incompetent peabrains who don't even know how to use technology to find player weaknesses. It is hard, but that's part of what we have to live with if we want to see this team grow. Failure is the wisest teacher, but failing consistently is a problem.

We have been handed our ***** by England, New Zealand, and Australia, yet we continue to make the same selections and play with the same mindset. This is just unacceptable. I was watching some interview about Naseem who said that this was a learning experience for his bowling. Learning experience my ***, you were selected to win us matches, not go on a field trip. I'll get into the specifics in a bit, but the very first thing our team needs to do is let go of the fact that we are a "good" team. We aren't. We can show up and put on performances, but a good team does that consistently. We are quickly falling into a pit if we don't fix what's happening around us. Some might say that this was just "one bad performance", and for those people, I encourage you to look at how we were absolutely decimated in Eng and Aus prior to this series.

Now come the specifics. Fielding is the worst, we are worse than the associate nations at fielding. We are a joke of a fielding team. I've seen toddlers take better catches than our team. It is a joke, and you don't win matches if you can't take catches. You have my word for it that if we had taken all our chances this series, we'd have beaten New Zealand in the first match and they'd be all-out for around 400 today. On top of that, when was the last time we even had a run-out in test cricket as a fielding team. Probably centuries ago I presume, so fix that aspect as well. Your fielders near the wickets should be the best. We had Shadab who had a gun throw at the stumps, but he's not here, so you can't rely on one player to field for the whole team.

Secondly, our bowling needs a revamp. We need experienced bowlers who know what to do under immense pressure. Shaheen for all the lack of support he received did perfectly fine, but he is not an old-ball bowler. He needs to work on his stamina and give as many overs up front as he can. He's a gem to be playing on a team which is filled with coal. Abbas has never looked this pathetic as a bowler in his life. Like what on Earth is he waiting for, you average 132 when people stand outside the crease and don't change anything about your bowling. Try something new, bring up the pace, put your back into it for crying out loud. I don't know if it was Rizwan refusing to bring himself up, or if it was Abbas, but whoever it was needs to get their head checked. If Abbas cannot bowl above 130kph, he should not be allowed anywhere near the team, and that's just the truth. It might not sit well with some of you, but look at the stats and please prove me wrong about why he merits a spot on the team. Naseem needs to go back into domestic and should never be back on the team until he has played 50 FC games and has decent enough statistics. He has a new bowling style that he's testing out against New Zealand like they'll go easy on him. Going at 5 an over without any wickets is horrible. Faheem has been out of the team for a while, and he's done his job as a supporting bowler overseas. I'd take him any day over Abbas, he's much better.

As for the batting, get Shan Masood out of the team right now. He is probably the worst player to have been given 21 odd test matches to show his worth, and if I'm not mistaken, with this innings, his average will dip below 30. His technique has too many flaws and his test career is over. Abid Ali has this innings to prove himself with a fat hundred, but he too will suffer the same fate as Shan sooner or later. Everyone else has done something on this tour besides from our openers.

As a team management, sack everybody. I mean everybody. Get Misbah out of the team and bring some respectable foreign coach. Get Waqar Younis out of the team and bring in a better bowling coach. And please find a spin coach as well.

A lot of people are looking at this match as a defeat, but I look at it like a victory. It could be the final stepping stone to remove all the dead weight from the team, the final push to get our board to make the big decisions.

Last paragraph make me sick. How many times we should take defeat as victory so we can revamp everything. Revamp version 9.0.2???

Whose bright idea was it to throw Naseem and Zafar - the two who received the biggest phainta - in front of the media?

Revamp it as many times as you need to.

When the mistakes lie in the management's selections, what can you expect the team to do about it?

Kick all the management out. Drop all the dead weight from the team.

Would you rather we keep this team and go into the next series and get shambolically destroyed by SA?

I understand that it is a tough pill to swallow, but experimentation and changes are the only way up.

There used to be a time that we used to bundle out teams for well below 200. Now individuals are making their career best scores against us and score double hundreds at will, this is too painful as a pakistani fan.

Wonder who will get their face saving hundred in this final innings then? Is it going to be Haris? Are we going to see another cake cutting ceremony?

The last thing they should do after conceding this lead is try to block and hope to survive 2 days for a draw play attacking cricket look to score 3-4 an over and make 450-500 to draw not limp your way to an innings defeat.

What do you thinks going to happen?

:salute

Is the pitch became flat now. May be we can put up a surviving fight again to please PCB chief.

It looks like there is less demons now on the pitch, i don't see that grass anymore so you won't get that awkward bounce like on Day 1. InshAllah the boys put up a fight.

Tough pill to swallow but it's true.

Shoaib has been very critical of Mani and WK in the past few days whereas previously he would defend them vigorously. I wonder if this has something to do with not being accepted for the CA role

I am telling you now. This whole FC restructure drama will not yield any results. Don’t fall for the hype of delusional cheerleaders who are also predicting Naseem Shah to become a world class pacer.

Pakistan is an almost minnow level team now and has already seen its heyday in cricket, i.e. from late 70s to mid 2000s.

It is all downhill from here. We will never be a top team again.

Pakistan can’t compete with countries where people are rewarded according to performance and not sifarish.

The culture needs to change. A country where the economy and politics is dominated by people with the guns will have the sifarish culture in all institutions.

One can argue that Pakistan earlier was not so bad, but countries like India have changed and Pakistan hasn’t.

I haven’t seen this much collective beghairti from our cricket team ever

I think people are reacting too much. It's an away tour and any team will find it tough.

Yes the performance was poor but the reaction seems to be OTT. it wasn't a world beater team and people should have less expectations and NOT go from one extreme to the other in a matter of days.

Another day of torture to come, perhaps a day and a bit if we can somehow survive till the 5th day.

Look at the bright side, NZ have only three centurians while Pak have four (and one near miss) :ashwin
