Pakistan trail by 2 runs in their second innings, finishing Day 2 of the First Test against South Africa at 88/3

Pakistan need quick wickets after lunch and get Makram and tail out swiftly.

Anything over 50 lead here and Pakistan are done. I can't see us scoring many in 2nd inns

You need both. You need different players cut for different roles as you need variety in the attack as well.
An enforcer role doesn’t necessarily have to be 93 MPH. 88/89 is enough.
Need to have a hard length ball and good short ball, and 1 that straightens. He has all 3. Like I said, if he can replicate exactly what he did skill wise in Aus ODI series, he would be a handful in tests
He has nothing for tests unless I see him bowl in tests and if he makes himself available. You are basing whatever you say about Rauf based on ODI performances. Even in ODI he blows hot and cold. He may have variety, he may have pace (so did Sami and wahab) but he doesn’t have stamina and he doesn’t have control. Control is everything in tests in SAF. Just look at philander and Paterson. They are way more effective than Sami (in his prime) and waqar in their tour in 2001/2.

The reason why aqib went with abbas and Jamal is for control but that’s why they are so disappointing. For every good ball there is wayward delivery. So all are bad and Rauf is not the answer.

Weird feeling Bosch will play well

This is his home ground and is on debut

Now the real test begins. Sri Lanka let the South African tail get away in PE and it cost them the game.
If Pakistan can get these last 4 cheaply they are in with a real shout.

This is what happens when you have even a little bit of pace. You can create that doubt in the mind of the batsman. Especially on a pitch like this.

Jansen can bat, so Pakistan need these two at crease out pretty much in next half hour.

I would be tempted to throw the ball to Salman Ali Agha. Just for an over or two.
He has had the wood over these guys.

South Africa now exactly where Pakistan were before their final collapse - 189 for 6.

Pakistan fielding. Deserves a book of it's own. Worst part is the next gen is not better at it either.

Another beauty from Naseem. He is looking a completely different bowler today.

jansen gone. 3 more wickets to go..

still 20 runs trail left

Its funny how South Africa are doing the same as Pakistan were at this point. Markram the only difference between the two teams so far.

Rizwan deserves his share of criticism but cannot overstate how important his keeping skills are.

Bloody hell you cant bat someone at 9 with a batting average of 40. Thats illegal

Saim Ayub dropped an easy catch of Marco Jansen off a no-ball bowled by Naseem Shah, but it didn’t matter as Jansen was caught behind by Mohammad Rizwan on the very next delivery.
