Very very well played smith... at the start looked nervy but after getting 40 he has looked awesome.

:hafeez must be laughing now, his bowling would have been handy here
Not convinced by these openers, they don't look like they'll average over 40, especially Masood who has unimpressive domestic stats. Think they'll be good in the UAE, mid 30s openers. Except they can't bowl. Which Hafeez can. I'm not totally sure these guys are really an improvement on Hafeez sadly.

Jamshed is the only opener who looks a really promising talent, hence I'd have played him, even if he fails a bit at the start.

The thing is none of our guys can play the new ball well in Pakistan. Our cricketers just lack that skill. Poor domestic structure/coaching in that regard. Until we do something about that, we not going to get quality openers. Perhaps the way to go is to get a mediocre opener and make sure he has an extra asset e.g. bowling which makes his overall worth good. Hafeez promised to be that for a period, but his batting has become like a tailender. And he plays the new ball the worst of the lot.

The best option was probably to push Azhar to open, get Jamshed in. Then get umar akmal in middle order.

U need to find a guy like dhawan,i know he is largely untested in foreign conditions and doesn't have the best of techniques but he negates the swing by coming down the track.
In short u guys need an agressive opener who knows how to use his brain.

I just feel that we will score 500+ and give South Africa a scare.

Can people give up on Hafeez? He is less than useless. Azhar and Shafiq need to go with the Umars in. Adnan needs to go for Rizwan. He is a pathetic keeper.

guys like Dhawan or Sehwag are an extremely rare breed of cricketer.

Plus I'm not sure those tactics work that well abroad in Aus, SA, Eng.

Dammnn!! Watching Smith bat is such a pain!!

Ugliest batsman ever. I have seen Misbah's Tuk tuk and Trott's trotting but this is something Gory!!!

on cricinfo "Rudradip: "The last time Graeme Smith hit 150+ vs Pakistan,(151,Cape town 2003) another Pakistan spinning legend had a bad day! HE was none other than the MAGICIAN Saqlain Mushtaq ; he had gone for 50-3-237-3(was Pak's highest wicket taker in that innings)." "

Smith and AB closing in on a 300 run partnership (290 atm) yikes

That was the innings that really finished Saqlain's test career. Smith and Gibbs took him apart

Wessels rubbing it in lol, suggesting last game was a fluke.

That is true as well.
But look guys like sehwag or dhawan with their agressive batting make a huge impact on a team, for example if dhawan or sehwag even get a quick fire 40 or 50 and get out it does 2 things
1,) give the batting team some momentum and confidence for the rest of the innings.
2.)more importantly they take the shine of the new ball and make it much easier for the middle order.
Agressive batting is a necessity more than a luxury in the modern game.
Pak will do well to groom such batsmen.

What a bad day for bowlers! A wicket of Dale steyn to show for it.

Smith closing in on 50 average, thoroughly deserves it. That'll make 5 of top 7 SA batters averaging 50+ though Faf has a small no. of games to show for it.

You'd think that the bowlers would stop bowling on the pads to Smith.

Played Biff, played ABDV.

SA are showing how they got to #1.

I hope Smith declares now & bowls for 8-10 overs .

Why? They can mount a lead. There are 3 days left. They could bat all of tomorrow make a lead of 600 and bowl us out in final two days if they wanted. They want to show how good they are and last match was a blip on the radar.

After this performance wouldn't you think the same?

wouldn't call it a fluke. A talented Pakistan side beat a Saffer side that grossly underestimated them. However Saffers are generally more consistent, efficient and professional as a unit and that has been the difference here.

So that his team can laze around in hotel on day 4 & 5 .

Just negotiate the new ball and Pakistan do have the ability to bat for two days. Won't win the game or even draw it but it'll show a bit of fight and character.

you cannot bat for 180 overs .

I reckon they will declare when AB gets his double and Smiffy gets his triple

By the fourth day, it will turn square. Tahir would become deadly. Pakistan has lost this unless a miracle happens

The way Smith is going, I think Lara's 400 score could be in danger tomorrow.

Haha. Remember, the best don't coast for a reason. They'll send a message to the world that they are not to be taken lightly.

I remember the Lankans scoring 900+ against South Africa.

Ajmal making an enemy out of Gould. Not a good tactic.

:yk will score a double ton and :misbah will score 99. It will be a draw. Pitch is very flat and Pakistani batsmen won't make the same mistake.

Current partnership 313 runs, 73.0 overs, RR: 4.28 (Smith 151, de Villiers 151)

WOW - well played lads

Its kinda weird that there has been just 3 overs of part time spin when the opposition clearly doesn't mind scoring 3-4 rpo vs main bowlers. Misbah needs to shake it up a bit. Part timers might bring in a false stroke.

He's going to get away with it, can't see enough evidence.

Missed the 2nd session and half of 3rd session did :adnan dropped another catch apart from AB's first ball and BIff's runout :13:

Pak still not out of it as far as drawing the game is concerned. There's no reason why Pak bats can't pile on the runs here as well. Pakistan Zindabad! :misbah
