Can NZ win a series in SL? I don't think they have won a Test series there before.

Just checked.

New Zealand have won a Test series in Sri Lanka only once (back in 1983/1984). Sri Lanka were a new Test nation back then.

So, NZ haven't won a series in SL in recent times.
Yes. But they still have. That's one more than what BD and WI have won in SL.

Sri Lanka will fancy their chances after that win vs England.

Batter makes comeback after one-year gap as Sri Lanka announce Test squad for New Zealand series

The two-match Test series, part of the World Test Championship, is set to begin on September 18.

Oshada Fernando is back in the Test setup having last played in March 2023 as Sri Lanka named their 16-member squad for the series against the Black Caps.

Fernando has demonstrated impressive form for Sri Lanka 'A', scoring 122 and 80 against South Africa 'A' earlier this month. The 33-year-old replaces Nishan Madushka, who was part of the squad that travelled to England for the three-match Test series.

Kasun Rajitha and Nisala Tharaka are the other two casualties to have missed out, with Sri Lanka retaining 15 members who travelled to England for the tour.

Dhananjaya de Silva will continue as captain, supported by experienced players like Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal, alongside promising youngsters such as Pathum Nissanka, Kamindu Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama.

Squad: Dhananjaya De Silva (captain), Dimuth Karunaratne, Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Oshada Fernando, Asitha Fernando, Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Prabath Jayasuriya, Ramesh Mendis, Jeffrey Vandersay, Milan Rathnayake.

Despite losing the series 2-1 to England, Sri Lanka enter the upcoming series against New Zealand with momentum from a remarkable Test victory in the final match at The Oval.

This win lifted Sri Lanka into the top five of the World Test Championship standings, with a point percentage of 42.86. The Black Caps currently hold third place with 50%.

O'Rourke bowling pretty well, good short balls and 90 mph yorkers. Bowling well on his first test in Asia so far.

88/2 - disappointed to see Ramesh as the 4th bowling option & batting at 8 . Weather forecast ?

Lankans are witnessing a slow but sure turnaround in their red ball fortunes. They have assembled a serious core of talent - batsmen, spinners and quicks. Australia better be on their best form when they visit Lankans early next year.

Damn sri lanka look good. Very very promising team

Decent bowling with lahiru and asitha

Batting is strong now with 4 good players in kusal, nissanaka, kamidu and chandimal. Even karunaratne is no slouch.

They won't be Easy to beat. Think can easily defeat nz and draw vs Oz too.

Another promising under-19 bowler from New zealand o-rourke. 23 year old . FIfer here. In his first 5 innings he has 16 wickets at 15.37 average.

Update:

Lunch taken on Day 2. Play will resume at 12:40 pm local. Tea will be at 3:10 pm local and play can go on till 6 pm plus the additional 30 minutes allowed conditions permitting

Kamindu is a future star along with Pathum. These two with Asalanka are the future of Sri Lankan batting in all formats.

Latham and Kane are playing at good rate. Partnership now 63 off just 81 balls.

Asalanka is a good player but he's quite frustrating to watch. Doesn't do justice to his talent with the way he bats sometimes.

Day 3: Stumps - Sri Lanka lead by 202 runs

Play will resume on Sunday, September 22, with tomorrow set as a rest day
Sri Lanka's lead in the Test match against New Zealand was extended to 202 runs by the end of day three in Galle. Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal contributed to this lead, with Prabath Jayasuriya adding three scalps to his overnight tally. Ramesh Mendis also contributed two scalps.

A 147-run stand between Karunaratne and Chandimal, which had been allowed to continue longer, would have taken the game away from New Zealand. However, the visitors' persistence with their plans and the wearing pitch led to the game being brought to an end. Ajaz Patel exploited the growing patch of rough outside the left-hander's off stump, allowing New Zealand to exploit the opening. Will O'Rourke was brought back to attack the new batter, dismissing the other set batter in Chandimal.

O'Rourke's pace and bounce continued to trouble Sri Lanka's batters, allowing Kamindu Mendis to edge behind and putting him on the verge of a 10-wicket match haul. Mathews and Dhananjaya found runs when offered and rode their luck on other occasions. Even as late as the final few overs and over 100 deliveries into their stand, there was a potential Dhananjaya outside edge that flew past the outstretched hands of Daryl Mitchell at first slip.

When Karunaratne and Chandimal were at the crease, batting seemed easier, while pitch-related demons were largely in hibernation. Their partnership was a lesson in discipline and opportunism.

In ongoing test match between Srilanka and Newzealand, we are witnessing something very rare thing, Rest Day.
Due to presidental elections in Srilanka, the match is paused for a day.

I read an article about Rest Days in tests in Cricket Samrat Magazine probably 15 years ago.
Concept of Rest Day was very common about 50 years ago but now a days it's very difficult have even an extra day due to extremely pack cricket schedule..

What's your opinion on rest day?

SL 202/4 , pitch on day 3 turned considerably lesser than it did on day 1 . Day 4 & 5 some rain is forecast & today being a rest day , Kiwi bowlers would come in tomorrow well rested with new ball 8 overs away . I do not see SL setting a target of more than 310-320 . How do you think pitch will behave after being under covers for 24 hours ?

Here is the reason of rest-day in 1st Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand:

21st September will be a rest day of the 1st Test Match owing to the Presidential Election of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka." The Sri Lankans will be voting on Saturday for the first time since their economy crashed in 2022.

As you said the schedules are too packed now. Product of a bygone age.

Partnership were buliding but blundell play a reverse sweep against Prabath Jayasuriya and he is bowled

NZ 152/5

Need another 123 runs

Rachin is playing nicely but they need another 60 + runs partnership .

Lanka is favourite to win this test Today itself

If Ravindra can take NZ home on a Galle pitch starting to spit like a cobra it will be one of the finest efforts in this format

This is close game. SL advantage though. Batting last and scoring 250+ is always hard.

Rachin is the key here because NZ is 8 down now. Southee also departs

NZ still needs 72 more to win.

NZ won't score more than 20 runs here. Their bowling is not good enough and shouldn't have let SL score 300+ in 3rd inning.
