[PICTURES/VIDEOS] KL Rahul - Performance Watch

Better he sticks to tests and T20s... Because he has too much mental issues... In tests he can apply himself and get back to the basics which he was good in the beginning of his cricketing career (defense). He can play in IPL because the competition is spread across various teams and there is provision to play more players... This relaxes his mental pressures and he can play freely....

He averages about 35 in tests.

These are his stats in T20's :
KL Rahul vs top 5 teams :

Innings 28
Runs : 800
Average : 30.76
SR: 133.77.

Ad to this, he goes missing in every big occasion.

I think FC cricket and IPL are the most suited to him.

lol, he is pathetic in tests too despite getting so many chances.

Disappointing Asia cup

India are wasting Ishan Kishan. He is a dynamic left handed opening batsman

KL can bat at 3, Kohli 4 and Surya 5.

Should add a bit more depth before the unreliable Pant and Hardik have a slog

I think he may do well in tests if he completely concentrates in that format and opening... He can play IPL to earn his money. Nobody cares if he plays selfishly or tentatively apart from the IPL team owners. At the moment he doesn't have a fixed role in LOIs, sometimes he keeps wickets, sometimes plays in the middle order and sometimes he even captains! He should have been tried as opener in LOIs long back, not now... I strongly believe he should come out of confusions and concentrates only in one format. Even Pant is undergoing the same thing, but at least Pant has age on his side and he can sort it out in 1 or 2 years...

They will then be stuck with no 6th bowling option and pandya will have to bowl his full quota

As India square off against Australia in the three-match T20I series, beginning Tuesday in Mohali, a lot of the focus would be on how KL Rahul performs with the bat in hand. In the recently-concluded Asia Cup, he managed to score 132 runs in five matches. However, with Virat Kohli scoring century in the Super 4 match against Afghanistan, there have been calls for opening the batting with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. However, on Sunday, skipper Rohit confirmed that KL Rahul would open the batting in the T20 World Cup with Kohli being the third or backup opener.

When one talks about the shortest format of the game, KL Rahul's strike-rate has always been a point of debate. In 61 T20Is that he has played so far, the right-handed batter has a strike-rate of 140.91. However, there have been times when the batter has found the going tough, the match against Hong Kong in the Asia Cup comes to mind, where he scored 36 runs off 39 balls.

Rahul was asked about this issue ahead of India's first T20I against Australia in Mohali and he spoke elaborately on the issue.

"Look, obviously something that every player wants to work on. No one is perfect, everybody is working towards something, obviously strike-rates are taken on an overall basis. You never see when a batter has played at a certain strike-rate, whether it was important to play for him to play at 200 strike-rate or whether the team could have still won with him playing at 120-130. These are the things that no one analyses."

"Yes, it is something that I am working at, the roles that have been defined to each player in last 10-12 months have been very clear, everyone is working towards it. And, I am just working towards how can I better myself as an opening batter and how I can have an impact for my team whenever I go out to bat," he added.

Further talking on the same topic, Rahul said: "There can be criticism for many things. But the most important thing for a player is that what his captain, coach and teammates think of him in the dressing room. Only we know what role is expected of each player. Everyone is trying to give their best, but not everyone can succeed in each game. It is the kind of environment we have created where players are not scared to commit mistakes or fail."

"Anyone can criticise but we criticise ourselves more than any of you do because we are representing our country, you want to win games for your country, and we want to win the World Cup. All of these things are in our mind, if we do not do well, it hurts us as well. What goes in our group, that is what is important. The captain and coach are always encouraging players, not just when they are doing well but also when they are going through a tough time which is what a player wants to see, which is any individual would want to see, a little bit support, a little bit of care when someone is down," he added.

India squad for Australia series: Rohit Sharma (c), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, R. Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav.

A 57 from 33 for KL in the warm up against Australia. Showing the intent and form

KL is a less pressure situation bully. Can he perform when it matters?

Pant( in Tests and WT20 vs Pakistan) and Pandya( CT Final, Asia Cup vs Pakistan) have shown better output in pressure games.

KL had a decent match against Pak in WC 2019

57(78), not a good inning considering Rohit got 140(113) and Kohli got 77(65). I rate him more in Tests than LOIs.

1) It was his first match replacing first choice Dhawan as opener.

2) It was against arch rivals Pakistan in a World Cup. First time India facing Amir & Co in an ICC event after CT 2017 debacle.

3) Old Trafford pitch had early morning moisture and the conditions were bit cloudy. It rained later.

Scoreboard does not reveal all these. Considering this, it was a decent one under pressure.

He was definitely nervous when he started off.

But the pitch wasn't that hard to bat. Sarfaraz decision of opting to bowl backfired because there was just not enough for the bowlers. This was India's score after 10 overs :-

53/0

Rohit 37(29)
Rahul 14(31)

Rohit who generally gets criticised for slow starts was batting at a much higher strike rate and with much more ease than Rahul who struggled. He did well to hang on and get to a 120 run partnership but much of that partnership was carried by Rohit only.

That knock is basically similar to the knock that Pant and Pandya played on 2019 WC semi final at 6/4 and 24/5 match situation.

CT final? The one we lost? We didn't even reach the final of Asia Cup. You need to find better examples next time. :inti

I don't think Indian team management will experiment with anyone else in the opening slot in this world cup now. KL after this match winning performance in a practice match deserves to play as an opener. Top 4 is set and there is no need to change it just to fit a hack like Pant. Pant can play at 5-7 if team management is not serious about winning this world cup also. :inti

Rahul is better than what his stats suggests in Tests and inferior to what his stats suggests in LOIs. :inti

While that CT final innings by Pandya looks pretty on the scorecard, it was mainly a pointless innings because by the time he had walked to the crease, the match was pretty much out of India’s reach that he would hardly make a difference.

Pandyas CT final innings had almost same impact as Sehwags innings in 2003 WC final. Good fun while it lasted, but deep down everyone knew it was a lost cause.

Becoming the longest running joke of our cricket.

I used to be a big KL fan but not any longer.
The most frustrating idiotic overhyped white ball player.

He never really fulfilled his potential in white ball format.

Wait...he will bash minnows Netherlands in next match.

I am fed up with this timid choker. Next time open with Babar. I am sure he will drag it on to stumps

Why he's never confident while batting? He's always in tense mode, even when batting well..

Same for me. He has displayed skills of handling swing/seam, pace, bounce and spin everything in his career at some point but he has simply not played a single memorable knock in white ball format.

Needs to show up vs top teams now. One of the reasons why we havent done well in ICC tournaments.

This guy is someone's favorite in the team. Otherwise he doesn't belong in the team. Even Shubman Gill is better than him. There is a clear weakness with incoming deliveries. Chopping onto the stumps is his fav mode of dismissal.

I started off as a Rahul fan when he played test cricket but he's shown more and more that he deserves to only play the IPL in white-ball cricket.

Might as well give Shaw or Gill an extended run in T20s or open with Pant in his place.

I saw a real scared kitten in him yesterday! Thought he failed in UAE because of the slowness of the pitch but No. He will fail every single time when there is any pressure regardless of what surface he is batting on.

Given that India have a great middle order lately, He sould have tried to score some quick runs in the powerplay and provide a good platform to ease out some pressure on the other guys without worrying about his wicket but he thought he would tuk tuk his way on to a slowish fifty. There's no use in scoring quick fire fifties in normal matches if you can't replicate that in high pressure matches. He's nothing but a mental midget!

There were some who were offering excuses on Rahul's behalf that UAE pitches being slow aren't conducive to his strokeplay.

Fact is, he is a mental midget and looks like a scared and constipated kitten under even if a bit of pressure is applied by opposition.

He is a walking wicket.... already we should be ready for 0-10 runs for a wicket loss....in any batting situation

Not much performance it seems!

Rahul lbw b van Meekeren 9(12) [4s-1] vs NED!

KL Rahul gave befitting reply to haters who claim that he scores only against weak teams.

:)) This caught me off guard.

Safe to say KL Rahul is another Umar Akmal? I mean how long can you wait for him to perform? In fact dare i say Umar Akmal performed better against good sides in LOI cricket.

KL is a poor man's Umar Akmal.

With 3 of the top 4 in indian line-up scoring 50s the pressure is mounting on KL to deliver. But it might not easy scoring against the likes of Rabada, Nortje, Ngidi and Parnell on a bouncy Perth pitch.

This guy is ala RizBab... plays slow , plays for himself, less strike rotation and overall avg and SR is good because he scores soft runs .... rubbish playa

He will score 100 against Zimbabwe and his fanbase will be gaga. Will fail again in crunch games.
Doing same thing again & again and expecting different results is mark of insanity.

He is good vs pace. Rest depends on him.

He is so weak these days to even take a review for himself for a bad LBW decision. Mental midget.

He is mentally weak. If only Shreyas doesn't have that weakness against bouncer he would have already replaced him. That guy is mentally stronger

Easily..he has got a lot more clarity about his game than KL has. Iyer will definitely play if the matches are not in Australia and South Africa.

He has 4 fifties in his last 10 matches. He performs when he is about to get dropped. That is why TM can't drop him. What are Pant's scores in last 10 innings? Since fans want him as his replacement. :inti

"I Can Sleep Peacefully": KL Rahul After Starring For India vs Bangladesh

KL Rahul knows exactly what his team wants from him and as long as he is able to do that, he can "sleep peacefully". Having logged only 22 runs from the first three T20 World Cup games, it was Rahul's opportunity to do the star turn with one of his better half-centuries (50 off 32 balls) and a magnificent direct throw from the deep that became a turning point in India's five-run victory over Bangladesh. "My emotions were good. We are all excited to be out here and we have all looked forward to this World Cup for last one year. I have always tried to stay balanced whether I am doing well or not," Rahul said when asked about what was his mindset in the last one week when he went through a string of poor scores.

"The team has given me a role and if I am able to do what team wants from me, I can sleep peacefully," the Indian vice-captain told reporters at the post-match conference.

The most heartening aspect for Indian team over the past four games has been how different individuals have contributed to the side's success.

"This was an important game for us. We all wanted to contribute. Today it was an opportunity for me to stand up and be counted. Every match, a different person is putting his hand up and making it count," Rahul said.

Having been made an early exit from the last T20 World Cup, the Indian team, according to Rahul, worked hard to prepare themselves for difficult circumstances.

"We have really worked hard and prepared ourselves for difficult situations. So that when time comes, we can execute our plans in those difficult situations."

Talking about his sensational direct hit from the deep to dismiss the in-form Litton Das, he said: "We all train very hard on fielding. We work on our throwing and moving quickly. The ball came and I hit the stumps."

Rahul also spoke about the quality time spent with Virat Kohli on the eve of the match during an indoor training session.

Asked to shed some light on the kind of conversations that he has had with the maestro, Rahul said: “We spoke about mindset and how we have been coming to Australia for some years to play different formats but wickets this time have been very challenging.

“He (Kohli) has been getting runs and that means he has been doing something right. So I wanted to know what are the things that he is doing.” He thanked the coaching staff for keeping him in a good frame of mind.

“Yes, there is bound to be disappointment if you are not scoring runs but the support staff has always been very helpful.” Rahul was all praise for the little gem of a knock from Litton (60 off 27 balls) but said that the Indian team was always confident that they would cross the line.

“Litton played an exceptional knock and innings like these put pressure on opposition teams. He hit the bowlers off good length.” But he admitted that rain-break did help.

“Even without rain break, we knew that once the Powerplay was over, we could put pressure on them. We had the confidence and once the break was over, we were completely switched on,” Rahul added.

Should have been man of the match. Set up India’s total upfront and that brilliant run-out was a match defining moment.

I personally don't really care what he does in these tournaments. I want to see him bring his best in Test cricket and dominate a couple of series with close to 500 runs. He is a much better batsman than what his average is, he is a better test batter than openers like Dhawan( AVG 40), Mayank(41) and Shaw.

Exact my point too. I hope he becomes a 40+ averaging test batsman as opener because he deserves that.

Always fails in World tournament vs a good opposition.

2019 WC - A hundred vs SL but nothing else to show.

2021 WT20 - Failed vs Pak and NZ both, smashed the two minnows in two final games.

2022 WT20 - Failed vs Pak, SA and now Eng, smashed Zimbabwe and BD in two final games.

Failed in Asia Cup as well.

I've e said this before and I'll say it again. KL Rahul is THE SINGLE MOST WORST player to have been given the opportunity to play at national level. The worst part of it is that somehow he has managed to pull the wool over the eyes of Rohit and the team management to make him vice captain.
This guy has been such a total failure and considering how India is a team that heavily depends on good starts, he has CONSISTENTLY FAILED. The Indian teams' stupidity in sticking with him for so long is mind boggling. They deserve to lose everyw game with KL Rahul until they realize what a HACK this guy is.

Posters who backed KL Rahul over Rishabh Pant as opener must feel ashamed of themselves for such embarrassing opinions.

If you gonna open in World Tournaments with Rahul as your opener, you will always struggle to win a ICC knockout. This must be the beating of lifetime for those posters. :inti

In this format you can get out in the first over trying to hit a six. Instead this guy got out trying to defend against Pak, SF and Eng. The maidens, the weakness outside off stump are not good enough. I think he's done for a while atleast.

Both Rahul from Karnataka...
Mutual support and backing after 1year of failure

KL Rahul had a nice world cup with 2 fifties and some breathtaking shots. What a talented player India has found.

Unfortunately, he wasn't very lucky in this world cup and failed in some matches.

vs Pakistan : 4 runs from 8 balls
vs SA : 9 from 14 balls
vs England : 5 from 5.

But the talent is such that he should be persisted with. Rarely such talent has been seen on display.

It is time to move on from this guy! He belongs to the category of cricketers who had the potential, but lost their way due to mismanagement by themselves and team-management. If he cannot score a century (with all his talent/skills & experience) against Bangladesh in sub-continent pitches in 2 test matches, then what is the use of his growth as a cricketer? (and he is sometimes a captain of the team too!)

He can continue playing IPL and its time Indian team management chooses proper players to play international cricket for specific formats!

Rahul was proved a poor opener in LOIs long back. He was pushed to middle order. But still we pushed him as an opener and he failed yet again. Now he is failing as middle order bat too.. Now he is failing as test opener also... So what's next?

Biggest mental midget..these should have been his peak years but he is still playing as a clueless youngster who does not have confidence on his game.

Needs to be dropped now. Mayank Agarwal would have done better on these pitches than Rahul did. KL looked like an impact test batsman on some occasions but still ends up showing same issues which he displayed in 2018.

Moreover, in LOIs, where he is consistent, he seems to be a choker in big games. All in all, one of the worst investments up till now.

This guy should be playing for school teams in my state. I'm so sick of him, that I'm starting to hate on him. And mind you, I don't usually hate on people unless they are genuinely evil, or unless they decide to mess with me or my loved ones.

I've booked my tickets for the ODI match in my city against Sri Lanka on the 10th of Jan, 2023. And if I see this guy on the field, I'll boo him to my heart's content.

India needs to move on from him , he is nearly 31 and has been in the test side since 2014 and he was only brilliant for 2 of those years ( even then just making the 199 against a toothless english attack on a patta in a dead rubber and scoring a 158 against Windies on a relatively flat track ) , other then that he is a thoroughly ordinary batsmen

His reaction after winning this test against Bangladesh was gold. As if we won the world cup under his captaincy. :91: :inti

He is the most overrated batsmen in world cricket. Can play some good looking shots but has no mental game to play when situation is slightly in bowlers favour.

KL Rahul is having to work harder for his dual role of a wicketkeeper-batter in ODIs but he has no complaints as his priority is to be in the playing eleven. The 30-year-old, who is a regular India Test opener, is now not only donning the wicket keeping gloves in absence of injured Rishabh Pant but has also been pushed to No 5 in the batting order with Shubman Gill occupying the opening slot. Rahul said the team's clear of the role it wants from him.

"Obviously, I've done this for a couple of years now. From the end of 2019, throughout 2020 and a few games in 2021. It's not something that's new," he said in the media interaction after guiding India to a series sealing win over Sri Lanka in second ODI here.

"The team has given me time to settle into this position and role. When you have the backing of your captain and coach, it helps you focus and bring your 100 percent concentration, which is what the team is expecting.

"Yes, it's different to what I do in other formats that keeps me on my toes, keeps me challenged -- a different role helps me understand my game better." Rahul is having to work harder on his fitness for the additional responsibility.

"I've to work slightly differently when it comes to batting in the middle-order. Wicketkeeping and batting can be slightly more taxing on the body, because I have not done it for too long, I've done it on and off in white ball cricket.

"That's the tough part. But since I know this is what is required from me, I try to manage my body and work that much harder on my fitness. Little bit of work on my keeping and a lot of work on batting in the middle-order and batting against spin." "Any role that helps win matches for my team and country is what satisfies me the most wherever I bat. Firstly, I want to be in the playing XI, that's the most important thing." Rahul said he has got used to playing different roles for the team.

"Once you are there, whatever the team requires me to do, I try and do that. That's something that I've done throughout. Since the time I've started playing cricket for India," he added remembering his Test debut in the Boxing Day Test against Australia in 2014.

"Then afterwards I went on to open, played at No 6 and when Shikhar (Dhawan) got injured, I opened again, played at No 4 and 5." Rahul, who also led India in Rohit's absence last year, said the trust bestowed on him by the team management helps him thrive under pressure.

"I've been all over, I've been asked to keep wickets. It's been fun for me. I've really enjoyed being thrown different challenges. I've really thrived on performing in tough conditions and being put under pressure.

"That only tells me that the team really trusts me and backs me, under Virat and Rohit. I've really enjoyed doing that. It helped me understand myself, my game, and my batting better. How I'm under pressure, when taken out of my comfort zone." Rahul has occupies the wicketkeeper's slot at the expense of Ishan Kishan who is dropped despite his fastest double century in the previous ODI series.

This has also fuelled debate over the selection of Rahul who is battling indifferent form after coming back from injury during the IPL 2022.

Two amazing catches today.

Looks like he has mastered the art of catching the ball. :viv

What a great catch to dismiss Khawaja! Simply sensational!
