[PICTURES/VIDEOS] KL Rahul - Performance Watch

He is a very nervy cricketer, should not open the batting in any format.

Gill should also bat at 3 only and India should look for better opener instead of KL.

Iyer is fine at 5 in subcontinent but outside subcontinent, India might as well being back KL.

Form (a few good knocks) is temporary,
Lack of class is permanent.

Its extremely difficult to drop a player in this RAHUL Dravid Rohit Sharma era.

They kept playing Rahane until the selectors no longer selected him.

Kept BK till selectors removed him from the squad.

Kept playing Dhawan till he was removed by selectors.

Until selectors remove KL, the TM will keep playing him. Its injustice to Gill.

Even though KL Rahul received the backing of skipper Rohit Sharma after his batting no-show in the first two matches of the Border-Gavaskar trophy 2023, the star opener is unlikely to remain the deputy of the Team India captain in the longest and oldest format of the game. Embracing a lean patch after returning to the Test side, Rahul showcased another batting failure in the recently concluded encounter between India and Australia on Sunday.

He's been sacked. Looks like Gill will get his spot back :hamster:

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has left it to India captain Rohit Sharma to decide the vice-captain for two remaining Test matches against Australia in Indore and Ahmedabad. This means KL Rahul is no longer Rohit’s deputy.

When the squad for the first two Test matches was announced in December, Rahul was named the vice-captain. However, it is learnt that the selectors have decided to unburden the out-of-form opener.

“It was decided not to name any vice-captain. Instead the power was given to Rohit Sharma. Who will lead the side in case he has to leave the field is Rohit Sharma’s call,” a source told The Indian Express.

With Stats, Venkatesh Prasad Blasts KL Rahul's "Overseas Test Record" Perception

Prasad, in a series of tweets, questioned those backing India's persistence with Rahul owing to a great 'overseas Test record'. The retired pacer, instead, highlighted that the Karnataka batter only has an overseas Test average of 30 in 56 innings.

"There is a view that KL Rahul has an outstanding overseas Test record. But stats speak otherwise. He has a test average of 30 overseas in 56 innings. He has scored 6 overseas centuries but followed it up with a string of low scores that's why averaging 30. Let's look at a few others," Prasad tweeted with a graphic highlighting Rahul's overseas record.

Well said, Prasad.

Rahul is a nobody, whether he is playing at home or abroad.

IND vs AUS: Stripped of vice-captaincy, KL Rahul to lose playing XI spot to Shubman Gill for Indore Test
From captaining side two months ago to losing his spot in the XI, KL Rahul is on a downward spiral.

Just like Rohit , rahul has gift of timing and strokeplay .

Three sample innings

- dharamshala test vs australia
- his century vs England
- his century vs South Africa

Of all the batsmen and innings I have seen last 10 years , only pant has better innings than rahul . But rahul has played as opener and his talent is unquestionable .

What ails him ?

1- moody and nervy cricketer
2- likely distracted with media etc .

Time for him to instrospect and get an inner aggressor. All the talent is no use unless he shows some fire . I would play vihari over him anyday just cos vihari will bat with heart .

KL has enough batting fundamentals to succeed but he has lost something in his mind. Doesn't have that spark anymore.

He has to own his failure. It is not the responsibility of others to own his failure. Unfortunately BCCI is owning his failures by his repeated selection which is wrong. Him having a rubbish Test career is on him.

I've never understood the massive hype for this guy. Whenever there's even a little bit of pressure he looks absolutely clueless.

Too much mixing with Bollywood messes you up.

India opening batter KL Rahul has become the talk of the town, but not for a good reason. As Rahul continues to struggle with the bat, critics are lining up to question the team management's persistence with him. As the outside noise gets more and more intense with every failure, Rahul continues to enjoy the backing of skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid. While Rohit said he would continue to back 'talented players', Dravid feels the Karnataka batter needs to 'trust his process'.

In a chat with the broadcaster Star Sports after the conclusion of the second Test in New Delhi, Dravid called Rahul 'one of the most successful overseas openers' that India have had.

"I think he needs to trust his processes. This is just a phase, he has been one of our most successful overseas openers. He's got hundreds in South Africa and England, we'll continue to back him. I believe he has the quality and class to come out of this. It is great working with this unit, managing formats is the most difficult part. But there's not a lot of technical coaching, just simple conversations and challenging them, and giving them a pat on the back when they do well," Dravid said.

Rohit, on the other hand, has urged Rahul to pull up his socks and learn to play on pitches like New Delhi.

"Of course when you are playing on the pitches like this you need to find your method of scoring runs. Different individuals are part of this team and they will have other methods of scoring runs, find your own methods of doing it. We are not going to look too much into what one individual is doing, it's about the entire team. Because this is an important series for us big one as well. That's my thoughts on KL Rahul.

KL started out his career as a Kohli but is currently playing like Akash Chopra. Hence Akash can relate more to KL currently. He is a buffoon

I'm really glad that at least some of our past players have spine. And are willing to have these conversation aloud.

Transperancy is the end of corruption.

He was unlucky in both innings in the 2nd Test. Having said that, he should not open in any format. His place is in the middle order. He will shine there.

Opening must go to Gill.

Akash Chopra used to be quite intelligent, at least that's what I gauged from his comments in media.

Don't know what got into him that he is taking cudgels on behalf of a nobody like Rahul.

I see Rahul's career going Chopra way, both were/are strokeless wonders

Rahul isn't strokeless wonder. He is a mental midget. Range of shots is not an issue in his case, shot selection is.

Seems like he is a buddy of sunil shetty

Everyone focusing on Rahul when they don't realize they've got the next nuisance in the test team - Shreyas Iyer.

Venky bhai is owning Strokeless Chopra on twitter. Apparently Chopra was criticising the selection of 24 yr old Rohit Sharma over Ajinkya Rahane in 2012. He sarcastically used "talented" word against Rohit. As per Venky, Akash can criticize a 24 yr old but he cannot criticize a non performing 31 yr old.

He can play all kinds of shots but his mindset is exactly like Aakash Chopra now which prevents him from playing those shots. :inti
He may used to have strokes, but he hasn't played them for quite some time now, save against minnows.

That's why I called him a strokeless wonder.

Indeed.

He is overrated as hell in tests. Is a sitting duck against anything challenging, especially pace. But we'll still play him in WTC final.

If he isn't able to play them, no point of possessing those strokes.

'No cricket pundit should ask for Rahul to be dropped'

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir feels that it is a tad unfair to single out KL Rahul for scathing criticism as every player goes through lean phases in their respective careers.

In his last 10 Test innings, Rahul has averaged a dismal 12.5 with not a single score of above 25. His sequence of scores read 8, 10, 12, 22, 23, 10, 2, 20, 17 and 1, raising questions about his place in the playing XI.

There are strong calls to induct Shubman Gill in the playing XI.

"KL Rahul should not be dropped from the Indian side. One should not single out any player. Everyone goes through a lean patch. No one, no cricket pundit or anyone should tell him that he is not doing well and be dropped," Gambhir told PTI during an interaction on the sidelines of IPL pre-season camp organised by Lucknow Super Giants.

"You have to back players who have talent. Look at Rohit Sharma. He also had a lean patch. Look at the way he started his career. He had a late flourish. Compared (earlier times) to how he is performing now. Everyone could see his talent and backed him. Now see the result. He is going great guns. Rahul can do the same," Gambhir seemed confident of his abilities.

The southpaw is of the opinion that if the team is winning matches comfortably, there is no point in tinkering with winning combination and single out one player for harsh treatment.

"India is 2-0 up and not 0-2 down. So let's not axe anyone and appreciate the team's performance. I think the Indian team management is right in backing KL Rahul. He is a great player. He had scored runs in international cricket."

Not too difficult to see why someone like Gambhir would be so biased in this case.

So we are 2-0 up, we should keep playing a nobody like Rahul.

Hopefully, an extremely biased ex cricketer Gambhir doesn't come anywhere near Indian cricket in any capacity. He can keep filling his pockets in IPL though.

Yeah. Lucknow needs it's captain to remain in team india or it could hurt the team image.

Lean patch? When did he have a purple patch?

He is a mental midget, will always find these lean patches throughout his career. It is stupid to think that he can replicate what Rohit did from 2013 onwards.

In my opinion, his friend and that Carribbean wannabe superstar Pandya is more likely to be relied on delivering in important games than Rahul would.

If the team management backs Rahul so much then I think it is better to demote him to No.5 and ask Gill (if he joins the team) or Pujara (if we want to retain Iyer) to open the innings. Hell even better if we promote Axar as opener (a left hand opener, basically an alrounder, we have nothing to lose, it strengthens the batting lineup)

If we don't want to do all these circuses (just to accommodate Rahul, then better just drop him!) But I think the team management is worried about whom to select in WTC Finals as it happens in England... They are thinking between Gill and Rahul (who has done well in England recently), if Rahul is dropped now then it lowers his confidence WTC Finals. That's why I guess the TM is inclined to retain him this series.

So in a way its right to back him for this cycle (as its nearing its end). If he doesn't perform in the remaining matches of this series and WTC Finals (where he is likely to play as an opener), then we can groom Gill (or anybody) as his permanent replacement. I think this is a fair call at this juncture as it doesn't harm the team much now!

Asking Gill to play the remaining matches and on that basis if he is expected to perform in WTC Finals, then its going to be tough! Rahul is at least a tested opener in England (I know he has issues anytime as he is a mental midget! But still...)

Thats classic sunk cost fallacy.

I don't care that KL scored a century in England once. He failed other 7 innings in that series. And his footwork has eroded further still.

If team management doesn't trust Gill to face duke ball in July then select Easwaran or Panchal.

Indian Team management traditionally doesn't trust rookies like that! Only when Shastri was coach he encouraged youngsters (untested players) based on their abilities. That's how Pant probably emerged as a striking Test Batsman and we tried lots of newbies in that famous Australian Test Series!

It will be difficult for KL Rahul to avoid scathing criticism for his protracted poor run because of the enormous expectations attached with the job, especially when past cricketers have set high standards, feels former India skipper Sourav Ganguly.

Stripped of vice-captaincy, Rahul hasn't crossed the 25-run mark in his last 10 Test knocks. An average of less than 35 in 47 Tests isn't an actual realisation of his real potential.

"When you don't score runs in India, obviously you will get flak. KL Rahul hasn't been the only one. There have been players in the past also," Ganguly told PTI in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of Delhi Capitals' IPL pre-season camp.

Ganguly tried to put things in perspective as to why the Bengaluru man is being persisted with despite repeated failures.

"There's so much focus and attention with lot of pressure on players. The team management thinks he is an important player for the team. At the end of the day, what coach and captain thinks is important," the veteran of 113 Tests and 311 ODIs said.

While Rahul has played some quality knocks in England and Australia, Ganguly said it's obvious that people will expect way more from a talented player like Rahul, who has managed just five Test hundreds in nine years.

"He has performed but obviously you expect a lot more from a top-order batter playing for India because the standards set by others are so high.

"When you fail for a while, obviously there will be criticism. I am sure Rahul has ability and I am sure as and when he gets more opportunities, he will have to find ways to score," he explained.

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has advised India skipper Rohit Sharma and the team management to back underfire player KL Rahul. It is worth noting that Rahul is going through a lean patch with the bat and that saw him being dropped for the third Test against Australia. The player who was part of the first two matches could score only 38 runs across three innings. Shubman Gill, who is having a good run with the bat currenly, has replaced him in the playing XI. However, Clarke is of the opinion that the team management should have shown more faith in the player.

"I really like KL Rahul. He is a great young man and an extremely gifted player. India is winning at the moment so if I was the captain, I would be fighting for him. I would be saying, we are winning, I know he is not at his best but we can afford to keep him in the team right now because we are still winning," said Clarke on RevSportz.

"He is a good enough player, he's gonna train hard enough and he is going to come good for us. If the team is winning I think he can be keep players that aren't performing for a little bit longer. So I will be fighting for KL Rahul," he added.

While Rahul has failed to impress with the bat in the longest format, Clarke feels that he just needs a bit of luck to beat his poor run of form.

"If India feel that KL Rahul is going to be one of their best players, you have got to keep the faith. Of course it is mental, you just need a little bit of luck. I think Rahul is a super player," said Clarke.

Rahul is the first Indian batter to score over 7000 T20 runs in less than 200 innings. Rahul took 197 innings to reach the mark. The next fastest to the milestone is Virat Kohli, who reached the milestone in 212 innings. Shikhar Dhawan is the third fastest Indian to 7000 T20 runs - in 246 innings. India captain Rohit Sharma went past 7000 runs in T20s in 258 innings.

New Delhi: In what comes as a massive blow to LSG, KL Rahul has been ruled out of the IPL, as per a report in Cricbuzz. Rahul picked up an injury during the LSG vs RCB game. It is also being reported that Kl Rahul will miss the upcoming WTC final against Australia. Rahul went to Mumbai for scans and the matter has been taken up by the BCCI.

"The results of the scans will determine Rahul's participation in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in London early next month. The National Cricket Academy (NCA) team, which monitors his treatment, has not informed the concerned, including the team management as of Thursday night but those who know the situation are not exactly optimistic. In all probability, Rahul will be out of the WTC final too," read a report in Cricbuzz.

There are a lot of speculations regarding the extent and nature of Rahul's injury as neither BCCI nor LSG has given any official statement about it. Rumours are doing rounds that Rahul could be suffering from a hip or a hamstring injury.

As for LSG, they are yet to decide if they need a replacement for KL Rahul or not. In Rahul's absence, Krunal Pandya is leading the team. The report further states that Ishan Kishan could be in line to replace Rahul if he misses out on the WTC final. Meanwhile, there is not a lot of clarity on Jaydev Unadkat and BCCI is waiting for a clear update on his injury.

List of Indian players injured and will miss out from WTC Final :-

1. Jasprit Bumrah
2. Rishabh Pant
3. Shreyas Iyer
4. Washington Sundar
5. KL Rahul
6. Prasidh Krishna( he would have got selected if he was fit but it will be Unadkat now)

This gives best chance for Australia to lift it! India not in proper shape to compete at this juncture... (For that matter any overseas tests! Without Pant particularly we cannot even think of playing an overseas test match! He gave such a balance to the team + fear factor to opposition! We will still play 5 bowlers simply because we don't have proper test batsmen and because some of these bowlers who can bat better than our batsmen!)

Australia will seize such opportunities (they are the most anti-choker team ever! They will take a win at any narrowest opportunity an opposition gives even when they don't have a strong side themselves!) Australia to round-up every ICC trophies (first!)

India batter KL Rahul has successfully undergone surgery on his injured thigh and is determined to return to the national fold as soon as possible.

Rahul tore a tendon in his right thigh when fielding for the Lucknow Super Giants in their Indian Premier League clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the start of the month and was duly ruled out of India's squad for next month's ICC World Test Championship final.

The India star took to social media on Tuesday to reveal his surgery had been successful, with the 31-year-old making special mention of the medical staff that performed the operation.

"Hi everyone, I just got done with my surgery. It was successful," Rahul wrote.

"A big thank you to the doctors and medical staff for making sure I was comfortable and everything went smoothly.

"I am officially on the road to recovery now. I am determined to get back to my best and get back on the field.

"Onwards and upwards."

Rahul features for India in all three formats of the game and may be targeting a return to the national setup in time to feature at the Asia Cup and ICC Men's Cricket World Cup later this year.

He won't be seen in England for the World Test Championship final though, with left-hander Ishan Kishan named as Rahul's direct replacement earlier this week and Ruturaj Gaikwad, Suryakumar Yadav and Mukesh Kumar all placed on standby for the one-off match at The Oval.

KL Rahul is all set to join the Indian team in Kandy, Sri Lanka for the 2023 Asia Cup as the wicketkeeper-batter has cleared the fitness test.

So far, Rahul has been delivering a commendable performance since his return to international games. He seems to be finding the sweet spot on the bat consistently.

With playing continuing today, this is the longest time KL rahul has stayed not out

KL has played some classy shots today in his 84. But off 92 balls one could argue it's a bit slow. Let's see if he can get into that 5th gear

Credit to KL for ceasing his opportunity with both hands. However, he still went to his shell for apparently no reason. He needs a mental coach more than a batting coach.

I think he has secured his position to play at number 4 for India in the world cup with this superb unbeaten century against Pakistan.

Good.

Reminds me of an old desi tradition that when the boy in the family is troublesome , aunties would ask to get him married so that responsibilities might make him a real man.

Finally a knock that transforms him to man.

He always had style and aesthetics to his batting, now this version is more substance.

A great way to start the World Cup which should give make him more confident about his batting going into the upcoming matches.

His best odi knock till date!. Always was of the opinion that he is a soft cricketer. Today he has taken a step in one direction to disprove that. Long it may continue!

Loving this avatar of Rahul, very responsible and mature. The way he shed his self imposed inhibitions of last few years is simply sensational.

Long may it continue!
