· Sameer Saqib and Umer Eman steal the decider in Dubai; fast bowler Ahmed Khan finishes with a series haul of 13 wickets

Lahore, 18 January:

Pakistan U16 registered a convincing six wickets victory over Australia U16 in the fifth and final 50-over-a-side match to win the series by 3-2 at the ICC Academy in Dubai on Friday.

Pakistan made light work of a 213-run chase on the back of a fine half-century by opener Sameer Saqib. The Faisalabad-born batsman scored 56 with the help of five fours to lead a combined charge by the batsmen.

Sameer added 46 runs for the first wicket with Ali Hassan, who made an enterprising 27 off 35 balls with the help of five fours. For the third wicket, Sameer added 71 runs with his captain Umer Eman (36).

The chase was duly completed with six wickets and 23 balls to spare by the pair of Kashif Ali and Rizwan Mehmood, who put on 58 runs for their unbroken fifth wicket. Kashif scored 31 not out from 30 balls with the help of five fours, while Rizwan’s 27 not out included four fours.

Earlier, Australia were bowled out for 212 in 47.5 overs after they were put into bat. Their total was built on opener Ryley Smith’s 95 off 125 balls that included seven fours and two sixes.

Smith added 97 runs for the third wicket with McFadyen, who scored a watchful 37 off 64 balls. The two had come together after Pakistan’s opening bowlers had reduced the tourists to 15 for two inside the four overs.

Pakistan bowlers maintained their stranglehold throughout the innings and it was only a late flourish by Nicholas Davis (32 off 18 balls) that helped Australia cross the 200-run mark.

Ahmed Khan continued his rich vein of form with the ball, collecting two more wickets to finish the series with a tally of 13 wickets. The right-arm fast bowler took two for 25 in his six overs in the series-decider.

He was ably supported by Umer, who took two wickets for 32 in his 10 overs.

The two sides will now go head to head in a one-off Twenty20 match, which will be played at the ICC Academy on Sunday.

Pathetic display with bat in last few overs. Rely too much on single and dot balls. Shehzad is good but needs to improve

This is all well and good for Australia's youngsters, but will there be a return leg where for Pakistan's next generation get the same taste of "alien" conditions?

Century stand between Sameer and Shehzad power Pakistan U16 to last-ball win over Australia U16

• Pakistan achieve the 154-run target off the last ball to win the one-off Twenty20 match with six wickets to spare

Lahore, 20 January:

Sameer Saqib and Muhammad Shehzad added 126 runs for the first wicket which proved to be the cornerstone of Pakistan U16’s thrilling last-ball victory over Australia U16 in the one-off Twenty20 fixture at the ICC Academy in Dubai on Sunday.

Set a target of 154, Pakistan romped home for the loss of four wickets to end the series on a winning note. Pakistan U16 had earlier won the five-match 50-over-a-side series by 3-2.
The stars of Pakistan’s victory on Sunday were the pair of Sameer and Shehzad, who batted together for 16.2 overs to set the victory platform.

Sameer was dismissed for a 50-ball 57, but Shehzad remained unbeaten on 73 from 58 balls with eight fours.

Earlier, Australia U16, put into bat, collapsed after a blistering 93-run first-wicket stand from 62 balls between Ryley Smith (43 off 31 balls) and Devlin Webb (38 off 33 balls) to be bowled out for 153.

In the second half of the innings, Australia’s lost all their 10 wickets for just 60 runs, with captain Umer Eman proving to be the destroyer-in-chief with figures of three for 30. Kashif Ali picked up two wickets and Ali Asfand and Aaliyan Mehmood bagged a wicket apiece.

Apart from Smith and Webb, captain Jamison Murphy (19) and Nivethan Radhakrishnan 27 were the other two batsmen who reached double figures.

Scores in brief:

Pakistan U16 beat Australia U16 by six wickets

Australia U16 153 all out, 20 overs (Ryley Smith 43, Devlin Webb 38, Nivethan Radhakrishnan 27; Umer Eman 3-30, Kashif Ali 2-5)

Pakistan U16 154-4, 20 overs (Muhammad Shehzad 73 not out, Sameer Saqib 57)

Umer Eman seems to be a very good all-round prospect - almost every game bowled and batted in middle order.

Any summery of PAK U16 team - age, skills and potential? I think, many of these boys will be part of 2019 U19 WC, therefore PCB can pick few of the best performers and pick a squad of 23-25 U18 players for long term development program till next U19 WC NCA. That's a year long preparation for U19 WC under proper coaches and adequate facilities.

Only problem is that most of these kids will miss their school for such long programs and at this age, many of them (guardians) won't allow to skip a full academic year for cricket. One solution BCB tried is BKSP (Bangladesh Krira Shikhha Protistan - a Cadet College like sports training academy where now they offer education facilities for Grade 10, Grade 12, O Level, A Level and Undergrad (up to 15th level) in few generic discipline for their graduates, and there are options for a sort of grade transfer - students studying a years there can transfer their grade to other Universities and continue studies. Either NCA has to open academic facilities or they can facilitate affiliation with few Schools/Colleges in Lahore.
