What's new

South Africa [286 and 130] beat India [209 and 135] by 72 runs in the first Test to take 1-0 series

The ball isn't doing much. Seems like it was a case of surviving 25-26 overs for India. However this is still not over.

Ashwin and Bhuvi are no mugs with bat so India still in with huge chance here. 119/7

India with moral victory now! I didn't want that though! Wanted no mercy!

Shami and Bumrah can barely bat.

It's all down to these two if anything is to happen.

For 4-5 overs, Morkel and Rabada should give these two some chin music. Ashwin hates short pitch bowling.

Ashwin maybe trying to emulate Azhar Mahmood style inns vs S.A here.

Kohli is starting to jump up and down again.

It can only mean one thing: we're going to lose.

Awwwww yeh kya hogaya :sree

Even 10 men SA is enough for world number one :)))

Knew it philander will be a beast on this pitch. And now morris will replace steyn morris had a very good last year and was bowling above 143

Brilliant Test match, well done S.A

Indias bowlers did well but the batting exposed as expected in these conditions.

Congratulations to Proteas , easily won the match.
Bumrah was a mistake.

Indian bowlers had a great game, both with bowl and bat. The BATSMEN LET INDIA DOWN.

I wish Sachin, Dravid and Laxman had this attack.

Vernon Philander ATG??? He is a great bowler in home conditions. Away from home he only average 3 wickets per Test Match. Hardly grounds for ATG status.

He's a disgrace IMHO, this serves him right. His antics are completely unacceptable.

He even threw the ball to ground and had the audacity to ask for the ball to be changed

Can anyone tell me if India did score the 350 (as predicted by Pujara) to win the test?

Technically India should have chased this total with their powerful batting. Ashwin and Kumar showed if some application is applied, scoring becomes easier.

Congratulations to Proteas , easily won the match.
Bumrah was a mistake.

Ashwin was a mistake. Should be dropped for ever. Bumrah took 4 top order wickets, including ABDV twice. On debut.

Just shows your knowledge of cricket if you think he was the problem.

This.

He is an ATG but in SA conditions.

People are comparing him to McGrath which is ridiculous.

Well done India to make a match out of it.

Considering how teams like Lanka and BD performed I would not say this was a poor performance by any stretch of the imagination

Atleast I can go back to having 0 expectations again, always knew India will lose but had that hope we will win this series.. Well it’s been killed now grats to SA well deserved..

Yea that’s the standard we aim for, it was a garbage performance..

Hopefully these two idiots keep repeating the same mistakes through out this tough year, and we will have both captain and coach changed in the next year. These two are the worst people produced by India for those positions! 1 Year is not big so we will not miss many players by that time! Heck even Pandya looks level headed and shows minimum vocal & physical expressions!

South Africa including myself were wrong about this pitch. We can't afford to have similar gaffes against Australia.

If we really look at it, SA had the tougher batting conditions. 1st innings the ball was moving all over the place.
This morning the pitch looked greener than dau 1. India had the better batting conditions and have failed twice.

This is probably India's best attack ever for overseas conditions. The batting is probably the worst though, simply not good enough. If SA bowled first they would have won by an innings.

When is the next game? And where?

We can always live in hope.

But if one of Rahane and Rahul aren't picked, I'm not watching.

Congratulations for the win.

And commiserations to the Indians but very well fought.

You are right especially with this kind of team selection!

It certainly was not a garbage performance. India were in the game almost throughout the match. Just when they were at 35-0 today, things started getting one sided.

VK & co have 5 days to rally!

Expected result.Proud of the bowlers, Fielding was not good. Bowlers batted well also. top and middle order looked ordinary as expected.Overall Dhawan's drop catch in first inning that cost India 56 runs of Partnership made a huge impact.Overall the better team in these conditions won. Well played SA

It is the sense of entitlement of the couch fans, who want a win to be served to them every time otherwise they will whine about the players, the captain and the selection.

This was a good test match and sets up the series nicely. I think the neutrals and true cricket fans would have enjoyed it far more, than the couch indian so called fans.

Is Mamoon ok? Someone check on him. :)))

Now going to make an excuse that all sides subcontinent sides struggle in South Africa and no disgrace to India losing there.

You have already watched one where these two were not picked. But whatever makes you happy.

Overall a good advertisement for test cricket compared to the rubbish in the last three ashes tests.
Both teams competed. The game had something for everyone: India fans, trolls of India fans, and independents.
The plus for India is that supposedly their ‘weaker’ suit (by comparison) stepped up. If their bowlers can replicate and their batting comes even half way to potential, they will win a match.
The other point I would make is that, from memory, this is becoming a trend with India when traveling seam friendly conditions, their fast bowlers always compete in such situations.

I wonder why Kohli & Shastri have so much love for Dhawan & Rohit! I don't think even those guys are that much interested in playing test cricket! Is it a case of friendly environment/chit chats in Dressing Room & Ground (and hence the drop catches), are they serious about it? These two should not even be in the test squad.

It was on the cards, and thankfully Joker has shown his true place who is used to abuse players even when it is expected that at the end he will hang his head in shame and walks to the dressing room like a dead duck.

Brainless captain, favoring his buddies.

No team can score 350 on this pitch, especially against the SA attack.

Australia would have punished us, especially on day two and three (had the rain stayed away).
It definitely spiced up the pitch.

India's batting was atrocious. IMO they have the attack to take 20 wickets in this country and should drop Ashwin for Rahane. He won't be of use in the highveld in any case.

They have to fatten that batting line up. My team for Pretoria and Johannesburg :

Vijay
Rahul
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Rohit
Pandya
Saha
Bhuvi
Shami
Bumrah

Yes Rohit, India will need as many bats in the highveld unless they have someone better. It's not fair on Rahane to come in and put all the baggage on him.

Simple. Dhawan takes Kohli out to the best restaurants in Delhi, and Rohit does the same to Shastri in Mumbai.

I think it was a brilliant test match. I really believed India will win today after SA were bowled out for 130. Many here thought i was trying to jinx or something, but i really thought it was India's game to lose. Infact Ashwin proved it that it wasnt an impossible task. Overall a very good test match and hope that the next matches are similarly competitive.

You are a true cricket fan. Wish you were an Indian. Don't mind India losing 3-0 if the rest of the matches are similarly compelling.

I thought it was in Johannesburg, and here is good omen, India have never lost a Test there. I think they've played four, won 1 and drew 3. IIRC

Nah it's at Centurion and India have never won a test match there.:P
I think the only good memory as an Indian fan for me would be our WC win against Pak in 2003 there.

In my opinion it was garbage, I expect with the amount of money in a sport like cricket we should dominate.. We don’t dominate because we settle for mediocrity not just in cricket but every aspect of life.. You can only be at the top if you aim to be at the top, but we settle for drawn overseas tests or a 3-1 overseas loss and are actually happy about it..

Yes some trolls might say we don’t have genes but cricket is not exactly a sport it’s more of a game and requires skills and mental strength surely we can dominate cricket?

Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are expected to get smashed in South Africa. India made a lot of noise about an improved team before the series and still got smashed.

I think, IND fought really well - from 80/7 or so in 1st innings (almost facing follow on), then effectively 150/2 behind, team has pulled the game really close in 1st match of the tour, couple of better selections could have made it tighter.

But, overall it's a poor performance, I can see it from other end as well - not every day Pandeya'll score a run a ball 93, BK would average 50 & Ashwin'll be highest scorer of the innings AND, not every day IND'll get SAF 12/3 or knock them off for 130. What I understand is that bowlers have out performed their expectation - I don't see much improvement in bowling for reminders of the series (or further contribution from bowlers, despite poor catching); it has to be the much vaunted batting line.

SAF was caught a bit off guard and a bit unlucky as well for the loss of day 3, which should have been the best batting day, I expect them to come harder in 2nd Test. Overall, it's a much better series that what took place in AUS recently.

Good luck for both teams in next Test.
