South Africa [311 & 373] beat Australia [255 & 107] by 322 runs to take 2-1 series lead

South Africa vs Australia | 3rd Test | Cape Town | March 22-26, 2018 | Match Thread

SA first innings, batting first, 31/1. 15 overs in. Markham gone.

Can Hash score a 100? Will Ab continue his form?

South Africa
31/1 * (15 ov)

Morkel In for Ngidi. I was more impressed by Ngidi's bowling than Morkel's but there must be something in the pitch for Morkel to be selected. Or maybe just plain emotions as it is his last series.

This might be Morkel's final game if Steyn comes back for the next test. No way they drop Philander. And Steyn and Rabada are undroppable.

Good surface to bat on. SA should score 500 in first inning.

haha, 500 is probably too much. Faf is out of form. QDK is still not a 100%. Neither Elgar or Amla have even come close to a 100. If Ab gets out early, they will be in trouble.

should be a good match

cant wait to watch last session today and remaining 3 days! (off in Pak tomm!)

WHY the hell are they showing golf shots in between the match? Way to make test cricket more boring by showing golf and talking about golf..

And for the third straight test, Saffers have served up a pitch devoid of grass and lateral movement.

Warne just voiced his surprised at how flat the pitches have been, and Pollock brings up the test vs India where "the ball wouldn't stop moving sideways for 2-3 days".

Fully expected, but nice to see the the doctoring being obliquely hinted at in the comm box.

Just goes to show how all around the world Host teams are that insecure that they need tailor made conditions to feel like they can compete and win games :faceplam: its no wonder the quality of test cricket around world is so poor right now.

75-1 (28)

Looking at the pitch, I think Bradman can score big on this and improve his already stupendous average. :smith

As per cricbuzz, pitch has precisely 3.5mm lesser than India test

Bradman's outta form

(tbh he looked a million dollars in the first test match though despite low score)

If Aus would have batted first up, the score would have been 134/1 with Warner 86*(92).

That drop catch costing aussies..... elgar just reached his 11th test hundred

May be AB subscribe PP!!!

Ever since he has returned to his sanity, he looks like a changed man. On song, he is the most amazing batsman I have seen after Viv, but more than comfortable proportion, he seemed to have a bad day when you expected him most to deliver.

Here, he smoked Aussie attack to almost winning position, starting from a RR of 2.2. This is Newlands, and at this rate if SAF puts close to 450 by lunch tmro, Aussies will be chasing the game for 10 sessions.

AB won't comeback to white shirt ever again since he is a coward and an ipl merchant

Remember the days when some posters claimed this

Damn what a slap to them from the genius now,He is batting like a dream ever since that return

Never a dull moment when ABD is at the crease whether it's ODI, T20 or Test Cricket

His defense is as beautiful as his strokeplay....what a player

Talent personified

But, you can't blame the posters alone as well. We are watching cricket and the advantage at PP is that you don't need to be politically correct here - do you really disagree that, there was some question mark regarding his loyalty - to SAF, to white shirt game and to his team as Captain?

But, I really, really appreciate that he has come back as a changed man to fulfill some of his God gifted potential at the highest level. These PLs & SLs are too shallow to express what an amazing batsman Abraham de Villiers is.

I think AB is averaging 60+ since his return, and most of his innings were on bowling favored pitches.

Lo, mu khola to mahaj ek e jhatke me band karr dia........

Good bye guys, after AB, can't watch Elger & Faf to bring that RR back to where it was ......

Most likely a collapse gonna happen and SA all out for 320.

Congratulations Australia for series win!

Lots of humble pie to them. AB was micro-analyzed from all ways.

He only scores when scoreboard is reading 200-2 and bowlers are tired and increases his SR by flaying tired bowlers.

5 GONE..Bavuma OUT! SA in trouble now.

Pat Cummins on fire!

Both sides have such good bowling attacks so it's unrealistic to expect 400-500 totals. All they need is a breakthrough and the bowlers pounce on the newcomers. 300-350 are very competitive totals.

Faf and de Kock need to take some big responsibility with the bat next time. It would be shameful if SA fails to score 300+ on this batting pitch.

PAT CUMMINS produced a lion-hearted spell with the old ball to negate the advantage the Standard Bank Proteas top order, driven by an 11th career century by Dean Elgar, had established on the opening day of the third Sunfoil Test match at PPC Newlands on Thursday.

The Proteas, having won the toss on a good batting surface and a fast outfield that rewarded strokeplay, had passed 200 for the loss of only 2 wickets as Elgar and Hashim Amla (31 off 87 balls, 3 fours) put on 86 for the second wicket and Elgar and AB de Villiers (64 off 95 balls, 10 fours) a further 128 for the third.

They enabled the Proteas to dominate the first two sessions, putting on 75/1 before lunch and an impressive 110/1 between lunch and tea.

Elgar’s century – his second against Australia – took his career total past the 3 000-run mark and also gave him an impressive 50 percent conversion rate as he now has 11 centuries and the same number of half-centuries.

But Cummins turned the innings on its head when he replaced Josh Hazlewood, who had been Australia’s most impressive bowler up to that stage, at the Wynberg end. He bowled 8 consecutive overs of sustained pace and pressure (2 maidens among them) to return the outstanding figures of 4/13.

He got rid of De Villiers to a lofted off-drive to the fifth ball of his spell and then Faf du Plessis, Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock all followed back to the pavilion in quick succession.

Mitchell Marsh then took over from Cummins to dismiss the last specialist batting partner for Elgar in Vernon Philander as Australia completed a big session in which they had taken 6 wickets while conceding only 81 runs.

Elgar batted through to the close for an unbeaten 121 (253 balls, 17 fours and a six) and has the opportunity to carry his bat for the second time this year with Kagiso Rabada currently at the crease and only Morne Morkel to follow.

Just how much their total of 266/8 is worth remains to be seen until Australia have batted but one feels it is well short of what the Proteas had in mind at the tea interval.

Why do you say pitch is doctored? It is the prerogative of the home team to tailor the pitch however they feel like. Both teams play on the same pitch. Doctoring means illegally altering the condition of the pitch. That scenario would be that home team bats first on a flat rolled out pitch and once it is the opposition's turn, somehow groundsmen sneak in either water the pitch or scuff up the cracks to enhance them.

It is perfectly fine for saffers to have green mambas or indian pitches being spinning minefields as long as both teams play on the same.

That’s the term invented by white teams to sweep their defeats in India under the carpet.

When white teams mock about Indian spinning tracks, they forgot that both teams were playing on the same mine field. As if India fixed the toss and batted first all the time, they ridiculed Indian board and team.

Can Elgar carry his bat in this inning?

Brilliant hundred from him.

AB needs to make sure he scores big hundreds on these flat pitches like Smith or Kohli does or even a Clarke, Amla or YK used to do.

These are easy runs you shouldn't be missing after batting like a dream for first 64 runs. One of the reasons why his stats are underwhelming (22 hundreds only) even though he scores runs on a consistent basis.

Elgar carries his bat..Well played champ!

Now Warner will come and smash runs for fun.

For the third successive tests in a row , i have heard Holding and others saying this is a pitch where you have to work hard to take wickets. Mild way of saying a flat pitch. Now watch our resident SA cheerleader and other chest thumpers portray it as a graveyard of batsmen particularly if one of their fav batsmen scores runs.

Next two sessions should be interesting.

If Smith gets a big one today, Aus can post a 400+ total which would be dismal for SA.

If Smith gets out early(less likely), SA can take a 40-50 run lead and that would be very benefical as Aussies are the ones to bat last.

Steve Smith has been blasted put by pace today. Rabada was almost toying with him , hit him in the armpit. Morkel back to his intimidating best

Test Cricket is at a low if this guy is the best test batsman in the world. Looks dumbfounded when it seams. I am taking Williamson, AB, Amla, Root, Kohli over Smithy. Looks horrible when playing shots too. Courageous though to bat in this test with the dislocated shoulder after that injury inflicted by Rabada.

Australia needs to match SAs 311 to stay in this. Can get really tough by the 4th inning. Uneven bounce could be frequent here and SA has an attack to defend anything above 200.

He has always had an ugly looking stance but the fact that he's literally outscored all of his contemporaries in the red ball cricket is testament to his greatness.
At the end of the day, it's the runs from your bat that counts the most and not how elegant your shots look.

Bitter post :))

SA out for 311 and Aus 3 down for 120, flat pitch?

It is a batsman’s wicket to be honest.. Not like sub continent type batting wickets but if you apply yourself you should not face any issues.. Obviously with the quality of pace bowling you can get out to a good ball or a lapse in concentration can result in your wicket..

But pitch does not have any demons in it yet..

Bitter post :))

Lol yes realized that. But I don't know, he is definitely not a 62 average batsman based on quality. Has it too easy on home pitches. And hate his whining :steyn But yes, would take those batsmen over him, looks clueless against seam and swing for a 50+ average batsman

Smith is a much better test batsman than Kohli. Its not even close right now, despite the off series Smith is having.

Yes, but probably bias that I like good looking shots. I don't like to watch Smithy even when he is at the top of his game. As far as outscoring part is concerned, an average of 78 at home and a bowling attack that encourages away teams to prepare slower pitches probably has loads to do with it

That is the popular opinion. But I just don't find him that special. Think the last year INDvAUS has probably build that illusion of invincibility around Smith. Kohli in his zone plays some ridiculous innings. And I would with closed eyes take a Williamson/Virat/Root in non-flat conditions

Smith has his struggles against seam but nothing as bad as Kohlis Eng tourtour, let's see what happens later this year first in India's tour of England

Morkel being his last series is giving absolutely everything. He is born to bowl on South African pitches. Batting pitch or bowling pitch the bounce he gets there always helps him.

Well played SA! Excellent effort.

Need to get Aus under 225 or maybe by today.

His average is high because of home pitches?

How much did he average in last India tour? Or even last SA tour

This is probably his first poor series in 2-3 years (excluding minnows)

Most of the runs in India he scored on day 1 pitches with a lot luck as well. If you are analyzing his technique and quality, you need to consider all those things. Indian or sub content pitches, day 1 is the best time to bat. Only in places like eng, sa, and nz day 1 is the worst time to bat.

Now I strongly believe that current Indian team will do lot better in their next tour of eng and aus.

lol the pitch he scored on in Pune was llike a Day 8 pitch as per Shane Warne

dont be so bitter man!

Why couldn't Kohli score 50 runs in all inns combined that series?
