Mohammad Shami ran through South Africa's batting order, picking up his sixth five-wicket haul in Test cricket to put India in a commanding position at stumps on day three in Centurion.

There was plenty of action on the moving day of the Boxing Day Test in Centurion between South Africa and India, with 18 wickets falling, compensating for the lack of cricket on day two due to rain.

With the pitch assisting the pacers, the Indian bowlers made life difficult for the South African batters from the beginning. Mohammad Shami was the wrecker in chief for India with a five-wicket haul as the Proteas were bowled out for 197.

India lost Mayank Agarwal just before the end of the day's play, finishing on 16/1 at stumps, with a lead of 146 runs.

Earlier in the day, starting at 272/3, India collapsed and were bowled out for 327, with Lungi Ngidi leading the way with a six-wicket haul.

KL Rahul was the first to make the walk back for India, adding just one run to his overnight score of 122. Cramped for room, Rahul was done by Rabada's short-pitched delivery, as he feathered it to the gloves of Quinton de Kock.

Ngidi then hurried Ajinkya Rahane with bounce, caught behind two runs short of a half-century. Rahane's wicket started a procession, with India losing four more in the next four overs as Rabada and Ngidi made full use of the pace and bounce of the track.

Rabada then drew a leading edge of Ravichandran Ashwin's bat which carried into the hands of short cover. Ngidi got his third five-for in Tests against India with the wicket of Rishabh Pant. Shardul Thakur and Mohammad Shami got out in similar fashion, attempting a big shot but only managing to edge it to de Kock behind the stumps.

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj added 19 important runs for the final wicket before India's innings folded for 327 when the former was caught at third slip trying to play away from his body.

Needing to survive a tricky period before lunch, South Africa's innings got off to a disastrous start. Bumrah used the angle against the left-hander to his advantage, inducing an outside edge off Dean Elgar's bat in the first over of the innings. Keegan Petersen and Aiden Markram then took the Proteas to lunch on 21/1.

Mohammad Shami struck in the first over after the break, with Keegan Petersen playing on to his own stumps. He then got the better of Aiden Markram, beating the right-hander with late movement as the ball hit the top of the off-stump.

Mohammed Siraj soon got in on the act and brought an end to the innings of Rassie van der Dussen, who was lured into playing a delivery well outside off. Siraj almost had de Kock out for a duck and made it two in two, had KL Rahul held on to a catch at third slip.

The wicketkeeper-batter made full use of the reprieve and stitched a very important partnership with Temba Bavuma. Both the batters found the boundaries at regular intervals and took the pressure off themselves.

The two batters continued to grow in confidence, mixing caution with aggression as they got South Africa past the 100-run mark, who at one point were reeling at 32/4.

With just a few over remaining for tea, Virat Kohli threw the ball to Shardul Thakur, and he made an immediate impact as de Kock chopped on to his stumps, thus ending the 72-run partnership.

India had a massive injury scare, with Bumrah hobbling off the fielding after twisting his ankle early in the second session. Thankfully for the visitors, the fast-bowler did make his way back on to the field late in the session, though he did not bowl.

After the break, Bavuma punished the loose bowling from Thakur, smashing him for three fours. Shami, at the other end, continued to wreak havoc, getting the better of Wiaan Mulder. Bavuma soon got to his 16th Test fifty but was dismissed two balls later.

At 144/7, South Africa were once again in a spot of bother and it was the unlikely duo of Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada who bailed them out of trouble. Both the batters did not hesitate to play their shots and added a vital 37 runs for the eighth wicket before Shardul Thakur trapped Jansen in front of the stumps.

Shami and Bumrah then picked up a wicket each to wrap up South Africa's innings for 197, with India leading by a massive 130 runs.

India awkwardly had six overs to bat at the end of the day, and the late South African spurt brought one wicket, the 18th of the day. Given the last over, Marco Jansen struck, angling across Agarwal who edged to de Kock.

India will resume on 16/1, with a lead of 146 runs heading into day four.

Need to get 300 lead at least. I fear another collapse though as the pitch has quickened up and our middle order has a spine of a jelly.
Get to 170 at least and a lead of 300 and then we have a good chance.

I hope SA can bowl out India for some 170-180 and gets target of 300-310 to chase.

If India plays well in second inning, they won't declare before scoring at least 250 in second inning. No one can be sure of rain on 5th day.

India wouldn't like to end up giving small target hoping for rain affected day 5 and will look stupid if it doesn't rain.

This is the rain prediction for day 5 of the Test:

Screen Shot 2021-12-28 at 10.43.14 PM.jpg

Seems like the first session on day 5 day may be played while the next two sessions play will be unlikely.

India should probably bat today assuming there will be about 30 overs played (if necessary) on day 5.

Any target in the range of 275-300 should be really hard work for SA.

What a magnificent spell this by KG Rabada. Unbelievably top notch effort. Even Bradman would have struggled let alone KL Rahul.

Pathetic batting by thakur , what's the point of playing Defencive approch rather than attacking .

Pujara has already been dropped and edged on 2 consecutive deliveries.

Don't know what will it take to get these 2 dinosaurs out of Indian team.

With dodgy forecast for tomorrow India should try n reach 300 lead as quickly as possible even at the cost of few wickets nd then declare.
No way this shaky SA batting gonna score 300 in last innings.
No point in wasting time

Would be quite humiliating for SA if they lose to India in Centurion (The main backyard of SA).

India playing sensibly here, can't think too much about the weather. Sometimes I've seen last batting in places like RSA and Aus gets better.

Doesnt look like. This pitch is already showing signs of variable bounce

Out!! All of our batting gone.

It is good, we will see result. Already we have got enough on the board. Better we see result today itself (if tomorrow it rains! I still remember a test match we lost due to rain & Cullinan's century in 1997)

That match was drawn due to rain, India would have won otherwise as South Africa were 8 down in the fourth innings.

India need to Play vihari at three instead of useless Pujara .Pujara is done and dusted .

I remember this, as a 90s kid I was desperately hoping for a rare Indian win overseas and was so upset when it got called off.

I'm happy that now I just enjoy the game and results, although they matter, but not as much anymore :)

India have enough runs ready but to be safe they should get to 300 and declare and give themselves time to take 10 wickets, just in case weather effects last 2 days play.

I still remember that test for 148 & 84 from Dravid and heroic bowling from Srinath.

Could've been our only SENA victory in '90s.

India has now got the window of 30-65 overs, where there is less of zip in the pitch (since ball has now gone soft) with occasional variable bounce, after which it may start reversing. They have to score at least 3 runs per over in this period. This will take the lead to 300-325 (which should be enough)
First 25 overs to SA's fourth inning will be crucial (India has to get bulk of wickets in this period) else this will be a drawn test (since 5th day rain prospects are quite high)

Pujara has only 1 gear for batting. Even when we require quick runs, he is batting @ 24!

Test captains under which a team bowled out the opposition for under 200 most times:

49* - Virat Kohli
48 - Graeme Smith
40 - Peter May
39 - Clive Lloyd
36 - Ricky Ponting

79 for 3 at lunch.

India lead South Africa by 209 runs with 7 wickets remaining.

Game still in India's hands.

This is wholly attributed to Indian Bowling Potency since last 5 years

Another poor shot from Kohli, another failure for Kohli.

Pujara innings suck all the momentum, really painful to watch.

How time has changed. I eagerly wait to watch Indian pacers bowling in test than our batsmen batting.

Main reason is Kohli to create that potency..

We won't mind Kohli's form (heck even Pujara or Rahane's presence) if Indian bowlers continue to bowl like this and win matches! (We won't even dream of Sehwag's 300s, Dravid's solidity, Sachin's consistency, Laxman's elegance - because even with all that we were hardly winning overseas tests!)

One thing with Rahane is he ignited many sparks, he gets these brisk runs at times (even in the Brisbane test). In spite of all the pain Indian fans go through with the presence of Pujara & Rahane, but they have played some vital roles in all these heroic test matches!

Not much with the context of the match (India might get enough runs on the board, they have already) but this is an important innings for Pant. He needs to be consistent and harness those instincts (at least coming down the track wildly! He can easily put away bad balls... He is not making use of the solid defense which he has!)

Almost every alternate innings India finds itself at 100/5 or even less than 100 for 5, may be even more frequently.

It's our bowling that is winning us games every time now.

Rahane is about to throw his wicket. Tries too many shots when plays aggressive. Like he did in Gabba.

Edit :- he is gone.

Our batting line-up has to be the most pathetic batting line-up in international cricket.

Our batting line-up has to be the most pathetic batting line-up in international cricket.

But probably it is also helping winning matches! If the batting is strong, sometimes we may draw test matches which we can win easily (With all the batsmen trying to go for 100s, 150s, 200s, etc). Something like this was happening during 90s & 2000s...

Hence I will prefer having a strong bowling lineup instead of batting any day! But what is saving India really is "the opening pair" which is doing well in recent past! Otherwise it would have turned disastrous in spite of good bowling attack... (Also the late order batting along with Pant has rescued us many times).

Top order is very very fragile. If we were not winning there is no way on earth that Pujara and Rahane will be in the team. They should thank the bowlers for extending their careers.

Virat is a shadow of a player he was 2 years ago. His last intl century was in Nov 2019.

Rahane Pujara and Kohli all three are in poor form. However we all know which two need to be replaced first. It's time for Rahane and Pujara to make way for youngsters.
Kohli has to fail for another two years to be sacked from team. He has earned that.

But his fans claim that he is so unselfish that the day he stops contributing to team's cause, he'll make way for someone else. Doesn't look like the case though. He has been failing with impunity for last 2 years and there are no signs that there is any course correction on the way.

It's not that having a good batting line-up is hazardous for a team's health! Far from it.

In '90s and '00s, we failed to win away tests because our bowling was non existent for those pitches and not because our batsmen were selfish and were looking only for their personal milestones!

We drew many home test matches due to this reason (even though we had spinners to suffocate opposition). Lots of flat pitches were served to improve the milestones of batsmen!

Lead is now 274 . should be enough but they will add another 30-40 runs

India have a strong late middle order and it gets them out of trouble. Teams need to bowl full outside off stump but put cover out so that they keep driving

Lol, you insinuate this on the basis of what? You have any proof that Indian batsmen like Tendulkar, Dravid, Sehwag, Ganguly et al asked for flat pitches to be served in home tests so that they can get to their milestones?

Matlab kuch bhi!

So in order to prop our current 'batting' line-up, you call those batsmen FTBs? Or worse still, you accuse them of something more sinister, pitch fixing!

Indian team is probably the best team out there.

They have got good very good bowling unit now although jasprit ugly action bumrah is so unwatchable.

He is good but he has very very ugly action the most ugliest action ever.

he gets wickets, puts backsides on seats, has a fantastic role model worthy attitude and a fighting spirit which is epotimised in his lately improved batting displays.
I'd take his so called ugly action any day over the pretty boy actions but pop gun bowlers from the supposed land of pace

Don't worry. We Indian are okay with both.
Our team's performance as well as Bumrah's action.

poor effort with ball on day 1 by SA will cost them the match here. This could have been close low scoring affair, instead India will probably by the margin of their 1st inns lead they got.

What a terrific moment it must be for young marco janssen to get VK's wicket
net bowler in 2018 and selfies with vk , gets picked by MI in the IPL and now bowling for his country at home and getting a top player...stuff of dreams.
I feel he could be something special, if he bulks up a bit and develops over the years.

300 is more than enough on this pitch. India should look to finish the match today itself if possible (its quite possible actually looking at this pitch). Probably should target scoring 200 in this innings (just to make sure they score more than what South Africa scored in their 1st innings)
