If S.A want to wrestle the initiative they need to hit Lyon out the attack.
And he can bat too. Averaging 30+ in first class scored 3 centuries and 12 fifties

Good idea, with a four bowler attack, if one of them is rendered useless, the bowling team will be under immense pressure. But with Johnson in the form of his life, SA may never be able to build a big partnership. Johnson has taken a wicket in nearly every spell he has bowled so far.

Yes he can bat and he turns the ball. His last match 3 for 63 and 7 for 66. The only bad part is he copy shane warne action and grunt lol.
He was in Ram Slam?
Need a 50 plus partnership here to steady things. If that happens then much will be done to undo the
Aussies over hyped sense of self greatness. That and the ball will be older.

Wicket is slow but easy enough to bat. Johnson can't bowl his target-body line here. One big partnership is needed. SA is playing with a deep batting line up here so 350-400 runs should be the minimum score here to put Aus under pressure.
Elgar's a gutsy player, copped a few, still standing though.
Anyway, who's dumber CSA or PCB cos one gave Jamshed one of the hardest debuts and one gave de Kock a debut whilst a bowler is in ATG form?
That would mean SAs tuk tuk must bat long. Come on tuk tuk du PlessisIf SA can bat for a longer period here then kid may not have such a bad time on this slow pitch against tired Johnson and Co.

They need to show they're not weak which means hitting out all bowlers. Including johnson
The real test for south africa start after lunch.
Yeah, ofcourse they need to stay on the wicket but they need to show that they aren't scared. Or at least keep blocking and putting them off their games. Mitchell has always been mentally weak and the proteas must frustrate them.No need to show anything. Just bat for a long time here.
Ideally SA needs to attack Lyon here to force fast bowlers to bowl more overs but you can always cash in when bowlers are more tired. If SA can have a 100 runs partnership here then with tired bowlers, team can score lot quicker later. I don't care as long as SA bats for 130-140 overs. Runs will come. It's more important to break this Aus being on a roll here.
Faf is anyway has mainly a defensive game. He just need to keep rotating the strike.

With the ball getting older I think you mean the real test is for Australia. These two haven't looked bothered at all. "Best bowling line up in the world" or not, South Africa have the players to come to really hurt the bowlers in the afternoon session. Especially if they hit the spinner out of the attack, the Aussie bowlers might go to bed a little stiff with some bruised heels and ego's.
First hour after lunch will be key for both teams.

No the test is for south africa. The best day for batting in PE is day one south africa need to score big, lose early wickets and australia can run away with the test. Hope dean score a big 100.
Can faf be a 50+ averager?

And if Australia don't take a few wickets South Africa will run away with the test. So just as big a test for them.
He has a great defensive game against fast bowlers but poor on turners. Average will come down if he plays more games on turners.
He wasn't that bad vs Ashwin on a 5th day pitch.

That Aussie media is starting to get egg on their face now.
How so?
The Aussie media was going on about how good South Africa are. Most of those articles were an excuse to have a sly dig at England.
3/120 with Smith, Amla and Du Plessis out isn't too bad
Mitchell bowling at the extreme pace of 137 kph.
Yep he doesn't seem to be as effective when he can't bowl bodyline.
