If S.A want to wrestle the initiative they need to hit Lyon out the attack.

Good idea, with a four bowler attack, if one of them is rendered useless, the bowling team will be under immense pressure. But with Johnson in the form of his life, SA may never be able to build a big partnership. Johnson has taken a wicket in nearly every spell he has bowled so far.

S.A need to play one day type cricket. Stop worrying about getting out and just nudge it into gaps for the ones and 2's.

And he can bat too. Averaging 30+ in first class scored 3 centuries and 12 fifties

Yes he can bat and he turns the ball. His last match 3 for 63 and 7 for 66. The only bad part is he copy shane warne action and grunt lol.

If Johnson is over used he will become ineffective. That's the point of putting pressure on the spinner.

That would be a wise move here. Pitch is very slow with no bounce. Eng allowed Lyon to bowl long spells and that meant fresh fast bowlers.

SA needs to bat around 130-140 overs here and put pressure on 4 Aus bowlers.

Need a 50 plus partnership here to steady things. If that happens then much will be done to undo the
Aussies over hyped sense of self greatness. That and the ball will be older.

Wicket is slow but easy enough to bat. Johnson can't bowl his target-body line here. One big partnership is needed. SA is playing with a deep batting line up here so 350-400 runs should be the minimum score here to put Aus under pressure.

I do not agree with that, and I am not an Aussie.

Yeah I think S.A would be unhappy with less than 300 here for sure. They should aim for 450 with this long batting line up. Long way off even 300 for now though.

Eh, Johnson gave me a bit of scare here. It was on elbow.

Yo lads, wake up to see smith and amla out, nothing new there.

Anyway, who's dumber CSA or PCB cos one gave Jamshed one of the hardest debuts and one gave de Kock a debut whilst a bowler is in ATG form?

Elgar's a gutsy player, copped a few, still standing though.

He is that kind of player and playing mainly for his attitude. A good player to have when you need your team to cop out a bit.

If SA can bat for a longer period here then kid may not have such a bad time on this slow pitch against tired Johnson and Co.

That would mean SAs tuk tuk must bat long. Come on tuk tuk du Plessis

They need to show they're not weak which means hitting out all bowlers. Including johnson

No need to show anything. Just bat for a long time here.

Ideally SA needs to attack Lyon here to force fast bowlers to bowl more overs but you can always cash in when bowlers are more tired. If SA can have a 100 runs partnership here then with tired bowlers, team can score lot quicker later. I don't care as long as SA bats for 130-140 overs. Runs will come. It's more important to break this Aus being on a roll here.

Faf is anyway has mainly a defensive game. He just need to keep rotating the strike.

The real test for south africa start after lunch.

With the ball getting older I think you mean the real test is for Australia. These two haven't looked bothered at all. "Best bowling line up in the world" or not, South Africa have the players to come to really hurt the bowlers in the afternoon session. Especially if they hit the spinner out of the attack, the Aussie bowlers might go to bed a little stiff with some bruised heels and ego's.

First hour after lunch will be key for both teams.

Yeah, ofcourse they need to stay on the wicket but they need to show that they aren't scared. Or at least keep blocking and putting them off their games. Mitchell has always been mentally weak and the proteas must frustrate them.

Once the batsmen settle Mitch is bowling more than enough full and wide stuff to be taken apart. The trick is to frustrate the Aussies and make them try something different and then punish them.

No the test is for south africa. The best day for batting in PE is day one south africa need to score big, lose early wickets and australia can run away with the test. Hope dean score a big 100.

In this pitch, there is not much to feel scared by Johnson's short balls. He is not even bowling them because it will take too much effort to get the ball up by banging it short. He has hardly bowled anything over 150 here. Johnson will use short ball as a surprise rather than as normal balls here.

SA simply needs to put 2 big partnerships.

And if Australia don't take a few wickets South Africa will run away with the test. So just as big a test for them.

Good job by these two. Playing some shots now.

Can faf be a 50+ averager?

He has a great defensive game against fast bowlers but poor on turners. Average will come down if he plays more games on turners.

Good job so far by these two guys. Runs are already coming bit faster.

Good job by Elgar. Take some blows on the body without giving up. He is in the team for this attitude.

He wasn't that bad vs Ashwin on a 5th day pitch.

AB is batting too high for someone whose the best batsman in the world.

This partnership has been SAs best and more importantly shows that johnson is playable.

5th day pitch is not a turner in every venue.

That Aussie media is starting to get egg on their face now.

How so?

The Aussie media was going on about how good South Africa are. Most of those articles were an excuse to have a sly dig at England.

3/120 with Smith, Amla and Du Plessis out isn't too bad

Garry is a much better player than most give him credit for

You were clearly reading the second test build up articles with blind folds on.

I really love the fields Clarke sets. He also tends to stick to his plans if they don't work straight away

Tuk tuk is gone. Good innings tho considering the circumstances.

Have a feeling AB will fall quickly or elgar would now

Yep he doesn't seem to be as effective when he can't bowl bodyline.

One trick poney, is the pitch slower then the last one? From cricinfo it seem his speed was between 137-149. Average around 143 i guess. I don't know why people think he is express like Bret Lee.

Quite convinced that we're on top here. The Saffers will want to play some shots at some point
