we'll see who the real number one is this summer eng vs india..SA are perennial bridesmaids!

my bet is england will be no.1 pretty soon and they have massive strength in depth too!

We will cross the river when we arrive there mate :) At the moment you can't dispute the fact that India is #1 and has been so for more than a year..

cause they can comeback in a series where pitches r prepared which ppl. claim to say does not suit the game ... loose the 1st match convincingly and come back and look like the better team in the other 2 games..dhoni is a great captain.. and this is a good unit.. india r no.1 to stay

no.1 test team,t-20 champions, asia cup winners .. dhoni has done it all..world cup is next

He also helped reach the ODI #1 spot admittedly very briefly though. That needs an honorable mention as well..

Why isn't Smith having more close in fielders? Is he still afraid of India chasing it down? Just 2 slips and a silly point for even Steyn.

SA has now won just 1 test series in last 2 years (home/away) and that was against WI, thats assuming this test would end up as draw.

Is that enough for a team to be called no.1 in world?

Not now. but given the form, they could have a shot at it sometime in 2012 or 13.

Match heading towards draw.
Disappointment, we should have nailed em yesterday and chased it down.

So thats 1-2 years away. Let Indian team stay no.1 till then.

^^ Let GG get to his century if he could first :) That would be a great confidence booster for the little fighter..

Indian batting have to collaps if SA are gonna win...

When did Indian batting collaps last it was against Nz but Bhajji saved them.. The pitch is flat right now.. Anything can happend... But right now its ricky.. I think u should wait and watch...

Should have gone for it :butt

anyone notice... india played 3 series vs sa under guru gary and all were drawn series....
never able to win a single series .. any idea why....
GOLMAL.

Man of the match-kallis

Man of the series-Kallis/steyn

I'd give it to Kallis. Three centuries, some wickets, catches and just a crazy amount of runs scored. Steyn's inability to get wickets today will probably cost him, but he's had another amazing series. Just an amazing bowler.

its Drink .....they should now call it off ....SA don't gonna take remaining 7 wkts in remaining 15 overs when not able to take in 75 overs.....

What a boring end to a series between No.1 & No.2 ranked teams. Neither of them wants to win. They both did not deserve to be No. 1 & 2.

haha...Gary gives satisfaction to both the Teams ...and in all 3 series SA won 1st Test...:)

India really should have been in a position to win the series in last innings. They missed out on a BIG opportunity here with SA on the mat. But still last two matches have been of the highest quality. Well played to both team.

India's pathetic bowling attack has finally cost them big time. They might escape with a draw but this was their best chance to go for the kill and to defeat South Africa in South Africa. At 98/5 Dhoni should have attacked more. Will India ever get this opportunity to win in South Africa again 2-1? To over dependent on Zaheer and Harbhajan, Sharma's place should be in doubt he hasnt delivered for god knows how long.

This is definately Sachin's, Dravid's, Sehwag's and Laxman's last series in South Africa. India will not have the same powerful batting line up again.

Kya kare, kaha se laye bowlers..?

New ball due, that must be some sort of contest b/w Styne and Sachin.

what pathetic captaincy by Graeme Smith... with bowlers like Morkel and Steyn.....he should have declared around 275-280 and make India go for the win thus putting pressure on their batsmen ....now they would be happy to play for a draw.... SA doesn't even deserve # 2 ranking... Paul Harris should retire from Int'l cricket.... seriously.... day 5 pitch and you're still wicket less

You cant blame Smith, his team was precariously placed and at that point in team his first priority was the right one i.e. to make sure his team was safe from defeat.

In contrast it was India who blundered by defensive bowling, field placings and allowing SA to recover to 341 from 98/5.

that's it.....great display of cricket from both side ...well played .....:14: ...truly no.1 vs no. 2 series ....:D:D

Oh come on, I really wanted to see a decisive series to see who the best side was at the moment...

A drawn series means it's still inconclusive, so the only thing to take as reference would be the rankings. So India remain #1. SA didn't capitalise.

On to England next, will they knock over the Indians? :kapil

Well......since Amir and Asif probably can't play for Pakistan anymore...................mind giving them to us?? :)) :)) :))

By and large I agree- except India has not really 'escaped' with a draw- at no stage were they anywhere close to not drawing the game. Isn't SA even more dependent on Steyn? I need to look at the numbers once this match is officially over...

Don't forget, Kallis is equally close to retirement as Sachin, Dravid and Laxman....I don't know how you put Sehwag in that list...he's still got at least another 4-5 years in him? I guess India is not scheduled to tour SA for the next 4 years?

quite happy with the draw. Gambhir is showing the application and he could very well take over from the wall. He saved us in Napier and he helped India draw here.

kya baat kar rahe ho?? ...need to ring BCCI ..;-)

This should have been a 5 match series with no T20 and only 3 ODI's.

Bloody FTP

So a stalemate means the rankings cant be questioned at the moment. India and SA are even stevens in their respective countries and away. All of us need to move on to the next India vs another team encounter. Is England next or is it the Windies?

Exactly where were the aggresive Indians then?

Drawn Series is fair result. Its a shame series wasnt 5 tests matches!

I was looking at the stats from the series, interesting...

Another bad series for Viru in SA:

144 runs @ average of 24

Sachin was the best Indian bat:

326 runs @ average of 81.50 and 2 centuries

Kallis probably Man of the Series?

498 runs @ average of 166.00 and 3 centuries. Also a double.

Steyn:

21 wickets @ 17.47 a piece, just wow.

Zaheer

10 wickets @ 24.60 - still the best Indian bowler

From Cricinfo "Zaheer and Steyn have a big laugh as they look at each other and shake hands"

Great gesture by both! Proving that at the end of the day it is just a game and not war. Way to go guys!

Conratulations to India on a wonderful drawn series away from home.
Well done and rightly now deserve the number 1 ranking.

Overall a good series for India. A pity we couldn't push for a series win but glad we could draw this game by loosing just 3 wickets in a day's play.

Indian players performed more consistently and except in 1st inningsof 1st test, the famed batting did deliver.

SA players were consistent only in Bowling. I detect their over-reliance on Steyn and Kallis. Amla and AB were good too but it was Kallis and Kallis only who stood between India and series win.

Okay.. Kallis did well for SA.. But India Played Safe Cricket too.. They were not attacking at all. Their top order Batting was bit of weak link as Shehwag understood that he is not good for this type of playing conditions. And Dravid Should retire now to give young Pujara to shine his class. To me, Dravid,Sachin have Earned a lot from Cricket and they are now legends. Its Time to make the way for Youngsters to step forward and deliver for India otherwise, Another Australia in making within next 2yrs.. :D

Greetings to PP and its members...

For a player like Sehwag, who thrives on self-confidence no way he thinks he's not good enough... Doesnt mean he is, but def not his line of thought...

Even if it happens, India might go through a slump...

yaar 341 is too much of a risk with bowlers like Steyn in the opposition and 5th day pitch. If it was 250-280 they would have gone for it, but 300+ was never happening

I agree that we need to start blooding new talent but the truth is we can't afford to let Dravid, Sachin and Laxman all go at once. I think Dravid should hang up his boots soon. Pujara can come in for him. Sachin and Laxman have at least a year or two more left in them. We can't replace the legends but we need to find youngsters who have the technique and talent to get better over the years. Raina and Vijay really need to work on their game a lot before they can be given a permanent spot.

I think that 341 was asking a bit too much with an out of form Sehwag. If Smith really back his team, he would have had 6-10 overs at India at last night.
