Sri Lanka [191 & 304/9] defeat South Africa [235 & 259] by 1 wicket in the 1st Test, lead series 1-0

Perera has scored 153* the same as the amount of runs lara scored against aus in that famous win.
Who says history doesn't repeat itself?

Told you. Magnificent by Perera. Best Test innings for a long time.

The idiot Elgar will feel stupid now for his sledging.

SL shown more heart than we have in 3 years.

Let's not forget the role of Lasith Embuldeniya who took a 5-fer in SA's 2nd innings.

Unfortunately, this innings just kept me reminding about Azhar Ali.

That was disgusting. He was attempting to score 10 runs in 10 overs with 1 wicket to go. Only Azhar can pull off a stunt like that.

Guys restrain your temptation to compare and in the process dilute a great Test innings. It is not easy to play such a great innings. He batted with no.11 and added 70 odd runs. It is not easy against any team anywhere let alone SA in SA. This is something special. Let us not curse our team for not being able to come up with a knock like this.

Hope sri lanka win the series. India already defeated aus in aus. SeNa to be owned.

Next Test is in Port Elizabeth which has a surface that suits Asian teams, so a terrific chance for Sri Lanka to achieve history.

Wow, I wish I had saw this live but look forward to the highlights tonight.

I saw Lara’s 153 live and that was one the best moments ever in sports.

Can’t wait for the highlights. Just what Test cricket needed.

That was disgusting. He was attempting to score 10 runs in 10 overs with 1 wicket to go. Only Azhar can pull off a stunt like that.

The sad part is not that Azhar doesn't have any ability but the fact that he was a coward in that innings. Kusal even when 20 runs were required had the confidence to hit Steyn for a six without any fear of getting caught at square leg.

This shows the difference between Aus and SA sides as well. Aussies just don't give up mentally even if they are weakened.

Actually Australian tour helped them toughen up. It underlines what an under-rated bowler Pat cummins is. People were going gaga over Rabada.

Winning by 1 wicket in South Africa and this game going right to the last wicket such a great advert for test cricket.

Yeps, tour against Australia and New Zealand prepared Lanka, and facing Cummins in test is no joke, now people will realize that India were facing really tough fast bowling in that series.

Congrats Lanka, you deserve this, hope you go on to win series, I usually support South Africa but this time I will be supporting young Lanka.
Corrupt Lankan board should be ashamed, Lankan team is getting success without any help from board.

You gotta factor in 2 of their batsmen knocked down by Australian bowlers. One would have expected them to be afraid of bouncers with that scar. How doggedly put that away from the memory they took on Steyn/Rabada/Olivier.

KUSAL PERERA played one of the most significant innings for Sri Lanka outside the sub-continent to get his side over the line for a one-wicket victory over the Standard Bank Proteas in the first Castle Lager Test match at Kingsmead on Saturday.

In plain statistics Perera (153 not out off 200 balls, 12 fours and 5 sixes) scored more than half the 304 runs needed for victory and shared an unbroken 10th wicket partnership of 78 with Vishwa Fernando who stuck it out during a time when the Proteas could take the second new ball in the final few overs to finish on 6 off 27 balls.

For both batsmen it was their highest Test match score. Castle Lager Man of the Match Perera finished with 204 runs in the match which itself was a remarkable statistic as he had only scored 686 runs in his previous 14 Test matches. It was his second career century with both of them having been made on the African continent.

Sri Lanka’s total was the third highest successful runs chase at Kingsmead and their victory was only their second in South Africa – the previous one having also occurred at this venue in 2011.

If Perera was the day’s hero then Fernando was not far behind him, particularly taking into account the 8 wickets he took as well (4 in each innings), nor was Dhananjaya de Silva whose 96-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Perera also had a lot to do with the outcome.

The Proteas twice looked to hold a winning hand, first when Dale Steyn took two wickets with successive deliveries in the morning session and then when Keshav Maharaj broke through into the Sri Lankan tail with 3 wickets.

But they could not get the wickets of Perera or Fernando.

The Proteas were not helped by the hamstring niggle suffered by Vernon Philander that kept him off the field for the entire final day and they will also be left to reflect on the fact that their batsmen did not make enough runs in either innings.

The Sunfoil Education Trust (SET) benefited to the extent of R217 500 from the boundaries and sixes hit and wickets taken by both sides during the course of the match.

The second Castle Lager Test starts at St. George’s Park next Thursday.

Any Team needs just one win like this to boost their performance in future matches.
I hope this is first step in rise of new look Sri Lankan Team
Asia needs it

Didn't see the Test. Would love to know where did things go wrong for SA? Looks like even in the first innings from 152/8 SL reached 200 plus. Then again in the second innings looks like SA was ready to wrap up several times. Still beats me how a top side in their home den with that kind of bowling attack looked helpless. Any missed opportunities?

Last 2 wickets scores

SL first innings 39 runs
SL second innings 89 runs

Tailenders showing application can go a long way in turning around matches.

Well to be fair Kusal is a much more dynamic player than Azhar so he has the confidence to go for shots like that. Azhar will never hit those type of shots because of his many limitations.

Would have been funny to see Azhar trying to make 78 in 78 overs with Yasir at the other end trying to blindly slog at every ball :))

What does he mean by "if not the best". This was THE best in history of cricket let alone SL cricket

Perera 153 in 200 strike rate of 76. That is more than Azhar's career ODI strike rate

SA were there for the taking for Pakistan. Mickey Arthur and Sarfraz let this great opportunity go because they were scaredvof SA before they landed. Well Kusal wasnt and it made the difference.

Kusal did well in both innings. 51 & 153. This is why i like batsmen who make it count in both innings. Laxman 59 & 281, Dravid 233 & 72& at adelaide oval, Dravid twin centuries against Pakistan in Eden Gardens, Dravid twin fifties against Windies on one of the toughest pitches. Pujara 123 & &71.

SL will at least draw the series 1-1. India lost 2-1, BD lost 2-0, and Pak lost 3-0.

SL confirmed best cricket nation from the subcontinent.

Azhar and Shafiq were supposed to take on that role for Pakistan. Nowhere to be found.

Srilankan are best subcontinent batsman overseas they can handle swing and bounce.

Remarkable, amazing by SL, congratulations to them esp after the Aussie thrashing.

Wish India had played here this year rather than last year. AB singlehandedly took the series away from us :( . We would have won against this Saffer team for sure.

That's okay there is always a next time. After so many tests India has finally found a decent opener. Once Shaw and Agarwal settle in India will start doing better and better.

Forget the win or batting, even the Sri Lankan bowling has been better and more manly than the Pakistani bowling, unknown Sri Lankan pacers bowling at 134-136 km/hr whereas Amir the strengthless individual was averaging 127-130 km/hr. Our bowling was a real let down on the tour.

Average runs per wicket by South Africa at Durban in the last 10 years (against all teams including weaker teams) is mere 24. That is poor for a home team That means on an average they make 260 odd in each innings. Opposition just has to have one good innings.

We won in kangaroo land

Haha on a serious note, this was the kind of win that will make almost everyone except the South Africans happy and even some South Africans will be like "Whatever, we just were up against something special".

SL will at least draw the series 1-1. India lost 2-1, BD lost 2-0, and Pak lost 3-0.

SL confirmed best cricket nation from the subcontinent.

India played a 3 test series in SAF, whereas SL is playing a 2 test series.

There is no point in comparing since India also won one match there. SL could lose next two tests to make it 1-2 (but there is no 3rd test).

SL got thrashed left right and centre against an aussie team without smith and warner, with all the tests ending inside 4 days.
A month ago, SL also got whitewashed 0-3 to an English side (which could not beat Bangladesh in Bangladesh).

There is a reason SL are always at the bottom of the test ranking.

One odd brilliant knock by an individual (in this case Perera) can win you a few games but not the series. And with just one win in SENA in last 3 years, you cant become the best subcontinent team.

What a great win for Sri Lanka. This is surely going to be one of the greatest Test results of ALL time. Stuff like this >>>> Any T20 tournament. I tuned in for the last few overs. Unbelievable stuff, what an innings by Perera

Lanka is a good team. Unfortunately, they just don't have any experience in the team otherwise talentwise the team is not that bad. I expect their ODI team to surprise a few teams during the world cup esp. while chasing.

Said that y'day that lankans are going to surprise a few teams in the WC while chasing. They are a little lost when setting targets and bowling is ordinary, but while chasing they have quite a few good middle order hitters.

Unbelievable. I was watching this live when SL were 100/5.

I was like this should be over in no time.

A few hours later I checked cricinfo i was shocked to see that SL had won.

Kusal Perera, Sri Lanka’s hero in their one-wicket heist in Durban on Saturday, 16 February, said the victory was “special” for his team after some tough days on recent overseas tours.

South Africa seemed set to take a 1-0 lead in the series when Sri Lanka, chasing 304, were reduced to 226/9, having been well-placed at 206/5.

Perera, who resumed the day on 12, had sealed up one end and scored his second Test century, but the collapse at the other very nearly rendered his efforts in vain.

However, Vishwa Fernando’s dogged 27-ball 6* kept Sri Lanka alive, and Perera did the rest, scoring an unbeaten 200-ball 153*. The two put on a 78-run partnership for the 10th wicket – the highest ever in a successful chase in Tests – and Sri Lanka took a 1-0 lead.

“I'm still tired now. I don't know what to say,” Perera said shortly after play. “Great effort as a team, specially the lower order batsmen. They gave me good support. I believed in myself and we did (it). I did my part, (but we won) as a team. We did our homework. This is a special win for us. We did a lot of hard work in previous times.”

It's disappointing as it's just a two-match series. We'll come back stronger
Faf du Plessis, South Africa captain

Perera came in for plenty of praise from the opposition as well. "Incredible game of cricket,” said Faf du Plessis, the South Africa captain. “(We're) obviously disappointed. Great for the game of Test cricket. Perera was unbelievable – Superman effort.”

Things could have been different had South Africa not encountered a collapse of their own on the third day – they lost five wickets for just eight runs to be bowled out for 259.

Despite that, du Plessis believed the 304-run target they set would have been sufficient on another day, and suggested the result could have been different had Vernon Philander, the paceman who couldn’t take the field due to a hamstring injury, been available.

“I thought 300 was enough. Great batting took it away from us. I'd be lying if I say there wasn't emotions going through inside. Difficult for a captain, tactically.

“Brilliant bowling from Dale (Steyn) again. Disappointed not to have Vern (Philander) today. I'd have backed the four bowlers to take 10 wickets. It's disappointing as it's just a two-match series. We'll come back stronger.”

Just puts into context pakistan pathetic showing in SA just gone. Struggled to put runs on the board or compete. Yet a pretty weak SL team pulls of a superb test win here.
