Board mulls relocation of offices to Cricket House

In a strategic move aimed at optimizingS resources and enhancing operational efficiency, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is contemplating relocating its headquarters offices from Gaddafi Stadium to the Cricket House building in Lahore.

According to sources, the proposed shift comes as part of a broader restructuring plan, wherein the existing offices situated within Gaddafi Stadium are earmarked for conversion into hospitality boxes.

Under the envisaged plan, only the offices of the Chairman and essential operational staff would remain operational within Gaddafi Stadium premises. Additionally, it has been decided to relocate the museum of the Pakistan Cricket Board from its current location within the National Cricket Academy.

The museum is expected to be relocated to a public venue to facilitate broader public access and engagement with cricket heritage and memorabilia.

PCB to pick best performing players of PSL 9 for training camp

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Friday said the players who gave the best performances during the Pakistan Super League season 9 would be incorporated into the fitness and training camp.

Ahead of the New Zealand tour, names of Pakistani cricket players were contemplated during a meeting of board's officials presided by Naqvi at the PCB headquarters in Lahore. Chief Selector Wahab Riaz, PCB Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer, the director international cricket and other authorities attended the meeting.

New Zealand team will visit Pakistan in April for a five-match T20I series, starting on April 18, ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup that begins in June.

The PCB chief directed to select players on the basis of merit and their performances. Naqvi said even his own recommendation should not be accepted in the selection of players for the camp.

“The players selected on merit and performance have the ability to produce good results,” he said in the meeting that reviewed selection of players for the training camp.

The chief selector submitted a report about the bowlers and batters who gave stellar performances during the recently concluded season of the league.

Chairman PCB assigns revenue generation task to Directors​


Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi chaired an important meeting of all PCB Directors at the National Cricket Academy, Lahore in order to review and plan revenue generation. All the Directors also briefed the chairman regarding the working of their respective departments.

Other agendas also involved HBL PSL promotion strategy and deliberation over a Women’s T20 League in Pakistan. COO PCB Salman Naseer and Commissioner HBL PSL Naila Bhatti also attended the meeting.

The Chairman had extensive discussions with all the Directors, including Commercial and Marketing, of the PCB and demanded a thorough revenue generation plan for the Pakistan Cricket Board in the coming times. The Chairman instructed the Directors to formulate a viable and productive plan to increase the revenue.

The meeting participants also keenly deliberated over the plans and strategies for the inaugural women’s T20 league in HBL PSL style. Upgrading training facilities to a world-class standard at the National Cricket Academy for both Men and Women players was also brought to the discussion.

Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi: “A comprehensive plan must be put in place at all administrative levels to promote cricket country-wide and to uphold the standards of the game being one of the prominent cricketing nations.

“The PCB must be made a leading institution for facilitating players of all ages, backgrounds and areas. I want to streamline the working of the board and get rid of administrative issues that lead to a decrease in productivity of the board and its employees.”

Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi interacts with media in Lahore​


Chairman PCB Mr Mohsin Naqvi held a press conference on Sunday afternoon, at the headquarters of Pakistan Cricket, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. During the press conference, the chairman announced that the selection committee has been reorganised. Four members of the new selections committee – namely, Asad Shafiq, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Yousuf and Abdul Razzaq – were also present at the press conference.

“We have reorganised the selection committee. It will comprise seven members, and each will have equal power. There will be no Chief Selector so that there can be healthier debate. Each of the member selected to be part of the committee have been thoroughly deliberated upon. Four former players, the captain and head coach will also be part of the committee. A data analyst will also sit on the committee. There will be coordinators too, but they will not have voting power.”

“The selection committee will make all the decisions going forward. I have conveyed that the chairman will not be involved in any decisions regarding the selection. I back this selection committee and believe that they will produce desirable results.

He also talked about finalising a panel of coaches, who would be working closely with the selection committee, “We will be sending some players to the PMA Kakul camp which I believe would have positive impact of the physical fitness of our players, as well as the team bonding. We are currently also working on finalising coaches. We will confirm the news whenever the time comes as I do not believe in making premature statements.

“We will have a panel of coaches, that will be permanent. We will make use of players sitting in the selection committee as well, like Mohammad Yousuf is currently attached with the Men’s Under-19 team. I believe that people who understand our current crop of players – their strengths and weaknesses – should be employed to make sure we extract the most from our national team.

“The matter of captaincy is being deliberated upon. I believe that the captain is the selection committee’s prerogative. They are working on it and I am sure they will finalise their decision after the camp is completed. But once the captain is finalised – whether it is Shaheen Shah Afridi or someone else – we will stick by him for a long time. No matter what the results are on the field, the selection committee will be held accountable. If the captain does not have a say in the team, you cannot hold him accountable as he leads the team. Same with the head coach, because he has to run the dressing room.”

When asked about Imad Wasim’s decision to take back his retirement, the chairman said, “Our focus right now is the World Cup and his inclusion makes the team stronger. We have not discussed NOCs with him but we want him to play for the country. It will be the same for the rest of players. As for Haris Rauf, there was some misunderstanding. His contract has been reinstated and we are currently working on his injury. He is our star player and we have to look after him.

“There will be no relaxation on NOCs. We will follow policies as per the contracts. No player will be exempted. We will not be paying heed to any lobbying.”

Talking about PCB’s finances, the chairman said, “Whatever profit we make, should be invested back in cricket. Securing coaches and solving current problems should be priority and that’s what the money will be used for. The money will 100 per cent be used for the betterment of cricket in this country.

“I will exercise the powers given to me by the constitution. As far as the team is concerned, progress takes time. I am looking at long-term goals. You cannot expect everything to change overnight. We will do our level best and work very hard, but the results are up to God.”

When asked about the expansion of HBL PSL, the chairman said, “We want to launch the Women’s league and we have also started talking about expanding HBL PSL. We have discussed the possibility of having eight teams.”

Addressing the Champions Trophy scheduled for next year, he said, “We are planning to host the Champions Trophy in Pakistan and we will leave no stone unturned for it. We discussed the matter during the recently held ICC meeting in Dubai, where we reiterated our commitment towards hosting the event. The ICC team is reaching Pakistan today. We will be collaborating with them. The three stadiums- Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi- are being readied for Champions Trophy. We will then upgrade venues in Quetta and Peshawar too.

The chairman also emphasised upon the need to separate politics from cricket as he explained that boycotts hurt the economy of the country. When asked to share about his plans for women’s cricket, the chairman said he does not want to make false promises. He reiterated that the board is working on plans for women’s cricket and whenever something is concretised, the announcement will be made.

Looks like a man on a mission. Not interfering in the playing matters but addressing so many issues in regards to the infrastructure that enables proper cricket to be played

Former caretaker minister now a selector

A former member of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s cabinet — when the media mogul was caretaker chief minister of Punjab — will carry out the role of a data analyst in the national selection committee.

Bilal Afzal, an electrical engineer and an MBA graduate by qualification, has found himself among Pakistan’s former Test cricketers Asad Shafiq, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Yousuf and Abdul Razzaq, and will make decisions over the national side’s selection matters.

Pakistan’s next captain and the teams new head coach — both yet to be appointed — will be Bilal’s colleagues on the committee as well.

According to a PCB official close to the situation, Bilal is a “data-driven professional”.

“We never followed any procedure to appoint anyone as selector,” the official said. “It is the chairman’s right to appoint anyone.”

Bilal is not “anyone”. The former caretaker minister of Punjab for three portfolios — environment protection, forest wildlife and fisheries and planning and development — is the son of another ex-caretaker minister Sohail Afzal, a close friend of influential businessman and politician Mian Amer Mahmood.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Bilal is a group director of the Punjab Group, a well-known venture of Amer. Bilal, however, hasn’t ever been involved with cricket, at least at the top level.

On the selection committee as a data analyst, he will be assisted by Hassan Cheema, who has been appointed as an ex-officio member on the basis of his team strategy and data analysis experience with Pakistan Super League franchise Islamabad United.

Hassan was also part of the selection committee during Najam Sethi’s reign as the PCB’s interim Management Committee chief under chief selector Haroon Rasheed.

I haven’t seen a chairman do this much damage in a space of 2 weeks than the damage this guy has done. Egg on the faces of those praising this appointment - bunch of fools.

But what can you expect from an appointee of “government” formed by a mishmash of washed up, tainted, tried and tested, and failed politicians.

The country is being run by dogs and so is its cricket. What a mess

The builder, who had also taken money from people for flats, offered to sell the building to PCB when he encountered difficulties.

While the National Cricket Academy (NCA) provides quality accommodation facilities, the number of rooms available is not sufficient for teams to stay together. Consequently, PCB also plans to construct a hotel near the National Bank Stadium in Karachi, mirroring the facilities available in Lahore.

Interesting.. so they’re going to convert this building into a pseudo 5-star hotel purpose built only for visiting teams? Might not be that bad of an idea, perhaps it can be used as a hotel when teams aren’t touring to provide another revenue and cost recovery vehicle. If anything, it would alleviate the security costs and road closure issues for Lahoris. Same with Karachi I suppose.

Building, renovating and maintaining a hotel is no joke. Will the PCB be responsible for all this? Can they afford this? PIA had to sell Roosevelt hotel in New York because it was proving to be a burden, exchange on the exchequer.

Mohsin Naqvi seeks PCB employees’ list recruited on ‘political basis’

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has sought a list of employees who were recruited on the basis of political affiliation in the board, ARY News reported on Sunday, citing sources.

Besides seeking employees list, sources told ARY News that the PCB chairman also asked for the current posts and salary details of such individuals working for the board.

Sources added that education credentials of all those who were recruited “without rules and regulations” will be checked. Meanwhile, the process of making the list has already started and important decisions can be expected by next week.

That was a facade. Just like the government he's part of. He made that statement so he cannot be considered accountable for the Cricketing results on ground. But he will most definitely be taking the credit if Pakistan goes onto win the WT20 lets say.

In the remote chance the Indian Govt greenlit an India-Pakistan bilateral series, the PCB would clear the entire frickin' year of scheduling to ensure that series was played.

During today's press conference, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said:

"I haven't added anything to the team based on my desires; instead, I have delegated all my selection powers to the selection committee. Now, people will ask me about the appointment of the Vice Captain, and I have also given this power to the selection committee. I want to deliver these powers to them because I believe they should belong to professionals."

"As far as foreign coaches and local coaches are concerned, that's why we have made a combination. Of course, we have talent, but for instance, take medical sciences; we are lagging behind. Now, there is a fitness issue, so why is it? Because we are lagging behind."

"The aim is to identify our shortcomings and rectify them. By bringing in the best talent available, we seek to enhance the team's prospects."

Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi meets ECB Chairman and CEO in London

London, 1 June 2024:

Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi met the chair of the England and Wales Cricket Board, Richard Thomson and the Chief executive officer Richard Gould in London on Saturday. COO PCB, Salman Naseer was also present in the meeting.

The two heads of the board and their respective officials discussed various important matters between the ECB and PCB including the recently concluded and the upcoming bilateral series.

Chairman PCB extended an invitation to the chair of the England and Wales Cricket Board to visit Pakistan during England's Test tour of Pakistan in October. Moreover, the Chairman PCB thanked and congratulated the ECB officials for all the arrangements and successful conduct of the T20 series between Pakistan and England.

The heads of both boards expressed their well wishes to England and Pakistan for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Chairman PCB briefed the ECB Chairman and CEO regarding the preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The PCB assured that not just England but all the participating teams will be provided with top-class facilities and foolproof security during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Chairman ECB expressed good wishes for PCB regarding the Champions Trophy.

That honor belongs to the late Ijaz Butt (PCB chairman 2008-2011) and he is fairly hard to dislodge from the well earned title of the worst PCB chairman ever.
 
Great to see a PCB chairman finally standing upto the ICC. The Pakistan team were inconveniently given a hotel more than 90 minutes away from the stadium. So in other words, more than 3 hours would have been spent in a bus travelling to and from each match. Ridiculous during a tight WC schedule.

Now Naqvi has expressed his disappointment to the ICC and even stated that the PCB will pick up the bill but will move Pakistan team to a closer hotel. ICC has kicked into gear and given Pakistan hotel less than 5 minutes away from the stadium now.
 
As per media reports, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has issued directives to secure a new hotel for the national team’s stay in New York, ensuring their accommodation is more convenient for their upcoming matches.

Naqvi intervened after expressing dissatisfaction with the initial arrangements to the International Cricket Council (ICC). The original hotel was a 90-minute drive from the stadium, while the newly booked hotel is just a five-minute drive away.

The decision follows feedback from other teams; the Indian cricket team is staying just 10 minutes from the ground, and both South Africa and Sri Lanka have previously expressed concerns about their accommodations. Ensuring the Pakistan team’s comfort and optimal performance remains a priority for Naqvi.

If this man is this incompetent as a sports administrator, I can't even begin to imagine the type of havoc he must be causing as the interior minister.

According to well-informed sources, no internal budget meeting has been held so far and there is no chance of any such meeting in the near future, as PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is currently in West Indies on the invitation of the International Cricket Council to watch the T20 World Cup final scheduled to be held in Bridgetown on June 29.

The PCB chief is expected to return to Pakistan on July 2, it is learnt.

On a couple of occasions in the past, PCB’s financial budget was delayed due to mismanagement and the same situation has arisen again, which signifies an unprofessional approach of the authorities concerned in the game’s governing body.

The incumbent PCB regime under Mohsin took some major decisions unilaterally — without the approval of the BoG — in the recent past. These decisions include giving back T20 captaincy to Babar Azam, just two months ahead of the T20 World Cup, after Shaheen Shah Afridi-led side suffered a 4-1 T20 series defeat in New Zealand earlier this year.

The decisions to announce a headless national selection body comprising seven members, including five of them from Lahore; bringing back all-rounder Imad Wasim and fast bowler Mohammad Amir to international cricket; and appointing Gary Kirsten as Pakistan’s white-ball head coach just one month before the T20 World Cup were also taken by the Mohsin-led PCB with no formal endorsement from the BoG.

Pakistan’s first-round exit at the World Cup after embarrassing losses to the US and India exposed the poor decision-making of the present PCB.

Interestingly, a meeting of the BoG has not been held since mid-February and no date has been announced for its meeting yet.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has called for a crucial meeting of its Board of Governors scheduled for July 6, marking its first gathering in Lahore in nearly four months.

The foremost agenda item pertains to the approval of the financial budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, necessitated by the expiration of the previous budget on June 30, a procedural norm observed diligently.

Notably absent from the agenda is any discussion regarding the recent lacklustre performance of the national cricket team in the recently-concluded T20 World Cup, as well as its showings in the recent series against New Zealand, Ireland, and England.

Sources within the PCB disclosed to Dawn on Tuesday that while the agenda is singularly focused on budget approval, any member of the Board of Governors retains the option to raise additional matters, including team performance concerns during the meeting.

Pakistan’s disappointing campaign in the T20 World Cup, where the team failed to advance past the group stage despite decisions and preparations predominantly overseen by the PCB management, has raised eyebrows.

Surprisingly, no formal grievances have been lodged by the BoG members regarding alleged oversight in major decisions such as the formation of a seven-member selection committee, the reinstatement of Babar Azam as captain replacing Shaheen Shah Afridi, or the appointment of head coach Gary Kirsten shortly before the World Cup commenced.

To date, the PCB management has not initiated a comprehensive review of the team’s performances, although expectations were high for such an evaluation to commence during the upcoming BoG meeting.

However, the omission of any such agenda item strongly suggests a reluctance within the PCB to engage in a public discourse on the matter.

Insiders revealed that behind closed doors, a preliminary review process has indeed commenced, albeit without any sense of urgency. The focus appears to be shifting towards the upcoming red-ball series at home against Bangladesh in August, followed by one against England in October-November, steering attention away from immediate scrutiny.

PCB sources indicated that decisions regarding the future direction of the national team, particularly in light of its performance at the T20 World Cup, will be taken following a meticulous assessment.

This assessment is set to consider Pakistan’s preparation for upcoming events including next year’s ICC Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup.

The whole captaincy fiasco, resulting in groupings within the team, hiring of an extremely unprofessional and incompetent management, and everything culminating into PCT’s worst ever performance in a WC.

I knew he’d be bad, as he was just given the position as a favor, but I never imagined him to be THIS bad!

KARACHI, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Pakistan's sports ministry has decided to take control of the country's cricket board (PCB), which has functioned independently since 1948.

The ministry amended the board's constitution and issued a notification on Monday under which it will monitor the PCB's operational and financial affairs, the board said on Tuesday.

Sports minister Najamuddin Khan said his ministry had taken control because the board was functioning without a chairman following the resignation of Nasim Ashraf.

"Since the board chairman resigned last month, the ministry has decided to take measures to bring cricket affairs under the control of the ministry," Khan told Reuters on Tuesday.

"All sports federations in the country come under our control. And we also want to have a certain level of transparency in cricket affairs as people are unhappy with the performance of the team," Khan added.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), the sport's world governing body, declined to comment on the development.

However, a board official, who did not want to be named, told Reuters: "This is the first time the ministry has got involved in cricket affairs and it could change the whole dynamics of the way cricket has been run in this country".

PM Shehbaz urges Chairman PCB to do merit-based selection

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, instructed the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi to make merit-based selections be it players or officials.

Shehbaz was present during the Gaddafi Stadium upgradation ceremony in Lahore where he addressed the ceremony and stressed the importance of merit-based selection.

The Prime Minister also instructed Naqvi to improve domestic cricket in the country before adding that he should not succumb to any political pressure when making decisions.

"You should reform the cricket team and choose people based on merit, which is your speciality," Sharif told Naqvi.

"Even if the prime minister recommends someone which goes against merit, you should politely decline it," he further added.

It is worth mentioning that the demolishing work at the Gaddafi Stadium was completed in June as Naqvi had set the deadline for the work to be completed and the debris of the building has already been removed.

The main building will be moved closer to the box, the front of the building will have hospitality boxes and the back will have PCB offices.

The plan is to expand the enclosures on the right and left sides adjacent to the main building, the sources added.

Remember, the upgrade of the stadiums is part of PCB’s plan for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Three venues — Karachi, Rawalpindi and Lahore — will host the matches of eight teams and according to PCB's proposed schedule to ICC, all of India's matches will take place in Lahore.

The PCB also allocated Rs12.80 billion for upgradation of three stadiums. Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium, Karachi's National Bank Cricket Arena and Rawalpindi International Cricket Stadium will be elevated ahead of the marquee event.

Except India, all eight teams that will participate in the Champions Trophy have already played in Pakistan and the PCB believes that India does not have a strong reason not to come here.

The proposed dates for the Champions Trophy are from 19th February to 9th March.

This event will mark the return of the ICC Champions Trophy after an eight-year hiatus, with its last occurrence in 2017, when Pakistan emerged victorious by defeating India in the final.

Mr Naqvi expressed his satisfaction with the quality of the designs for the three stadiums and praised the engineering and architectural staff for their work. He emphasised that completing the construction work within the stipulated timeframe is a significant task.

I think he's overseeing the construction of Stadiums himself because he may not trust anybody else for this task. That's what I'm getting seeing him constantly run around people who will be renovating the stadiums.

It's a shame and a failure of our system also if that's the case. Because a chairman shouldn't be micromanaging stuff like a renovation.

Hired his mate Wahab Riaz firstly as a caretaker sports minister in Punjab, than chief selector of the PCB, alongside being the team manager for the Tours of England, Ireland and the T20 WC.


Then came the horrendous T20 WC where Pakistan put up one of the worst performances in a WC in living memory. Which of course can with a side of infighting and groupings.


Naqvi promised he'd get to the bottom of what had happened and those responsible would be punished. Instead we got a slap on the wrist for certain player but his mate, Wahab and Razzaq were both relieved of their duties as chief selectors and team manager's, respectfully.


And finally what we've seen happen to the Test team at home to Bangladesh. A very good Bangladesh side that deserves both victories. Anaemic and inadequate. Lacking in all departments especially the pace bowling, and lack of any spinners.


To say his time as PCB chairman has been nothing short of disastrous would be an understatement. Possibly one of the worst reigns in Pakistan Cricket's illustrious history.

Mohsin Naqvi chairs 74th meeting of BoG in Faisalabad

Pakistan Cricket Board Chair Mohsin Naqvi presided over the 74th meeting of the Board of Governors in Faisalabad on Thursday.

The BoG was briefed on the Bahria Town Champions One-Day Cup, which commenced at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad on Thursday afternoon with the opening match between UMT Markhors and Lake City Panthers. The BoG appreciated the efforts of Mr Mohsin Naqvi in attracting and convincing leading and highly reputed organisations to partner with the tournament, in which the country's best cricketers are participating.

The BoG also proposed that the Champions Cup, which includes events in the T20 and four-day formats, be incorporated into the PCB Constitution 2014 so that it becomes an annual feature. This will bring continuity, consistency and clarity to Pakistan’s domestic cricket pathway structure.

The BoG suggested that after witnessing the overwhelming response of the Faisalabad crowd, the PCB should take complete control of Iqbal Stadium and upgrade it to international standards, enabling the venue to be revived and host bilateral international series once again.

An update was provided to the BoG on the infrastructure projects’ progress with respect to the design and scope of work. Members expressed their complete support and satisfaction on the projects, stating this was the need of hour and once the projects will be completed, these will contribute in enhancing the image and profile of Pakistan and Pakistan cricket.

Mohsin Naqvi orders acceleration of stadium upgradation project​


LAHORE (Dunya News) - Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, has directed to expedite work on the stadiums upgradation project.


During a meeting chaired by Naqvi, preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy tournament, the ongoing Champions Cup in Faisalabad, and the stadiums upgrade project were reviewed.

Naqvi emphasised the need to form necessary committees for the Champions Trophy, instructing that responsibilities be assigned to each committee and work commence promptly.

He noted that major teams from around the world would be participating in the tournament, and arrangements must be of the highest standard.

Additionally, the PCB Chairman urged for increased pace on the stadium upgradation project, stating that all efforts should be made to complete the work within the designated timeframe.

He highlighted that post-upgradation, cricket fans would have an enhanced viewing experience, making the matches more enjoyable.

He also commended the enthusiasm of Faisalabad's residents for the Champions Cup matches and mentioned that the feasibility of hosting PSL matches in Faisalabad will be assessed.
