What's new

The Ashes | 3rd Test | Perth | Day 2 | 17/12/10

We need to get rid of one of these 2 so we can get into the tail. Any type of lead would be welcome after the day we had yesterday, but a 50-run lead under the circumstances could be useful and possibly matchwinning given they have to bat last.

Ordinary over from Harris but he did get some balls hit into the air. Long as they keep doing that it's ok.

Bell is batting magnificently. Really developing into a top, top quality player. He has 11 fifties in 16 matches against the Aussies, most of which have come against the greats of the game. Many men have done worse - but really, it's about time he got a ton against the old enemy. Hopefully it will be today.

Perth in recent years has been rather batsman-friendly in the 4th innings. England will be clinging onto this. They just need to get as close to 268 as they can.

Swann goes 87 behind.

Bell should be batting at 5, he is miles better than Collingwood and deserves better than this.

eek. great game.

Tremlett comes out wearing a muscle shirt 2 sizes too small for him

I dont know why collingwood is even in the team, apart from a few good catches he hasnt performed. Eion morgan should be in for sure

Agree, he hasn't done anything significant for a while. Though I don't see England wanting to change anything at this point.

Aye. I think this could be Colly's last series. He's 35 and hasn't produced for a while now. Could be that his eyes have gone.

Collingwood has been pretty much useless in test cricket with the bat for the best part of a year. a lot of England fans don't seem to want to accept this though. no doubt that if he fails again in the 2nd innings, he can only keep his place for Melbourne on the basis of catching. sorry but it's true.

I guess england wanted to go in with experienced players who were used to the australian conditions

My ideal side with no injuries next summer would be:

Strauss
Cook
Trott
Pietersen
Bell
Morgan
Prior
Broad
Swann
Tremlett
Anderson

Broad is still one of our best players. I am a big Finn fan, but I think the other three quickies are ahead of him for now. Lots of time for him to come back. And yes, it is time for Collingwood to bow out. Hopefully it will be with an Ashes win.

Bell averaging 200 in this series with one dismissal.

no. 6 for him is a bit of a mockery really.

should be at 5 I think. Ian Chappell thinks he should have another go at 3. maybe so.

768 runs at avg 85 in 9 test matches for Bell this year.

wow.

that will keep happening if he is batting with the rabbits. look at him batting with Prior and Swann, who can usually be trusted to stay in - he looked a relaxed and wonderful player. get him up the order, starting Sunday!

if we can last til half an hour after tea, we can have a good mini session with the new ball this evening.

I F***king hate GEO Super.

They start the ads before the last ball is complete and return after one ball has been bowled.

so annoying. Missed Tremletts wicket

we getting pwned.

got 3rd and 4th innings to make up for this poor batting display.

Congrats to Mitch! :D

collapse of 10 for 109

1-1 on the cards save for a Brisbane-esque comeback.

Australia

137 - 6 , 189 -7 and 80 runs last three wickets

England

145- 6, 181 -7 and only 6 runs for the last three wickets

A wagging tail the difference in the match at the moment

A very healthy lead of 81 runs. Aussies need to capitalize on this opportunity and set a mammoth target for England

Congrats to MJ for his 6-for!

Now then, lets see if English bowlers can take 2+ wickets in the last session...

or Will Hughes justify his selection and try to rectify the single digit score in the first innings??

Wonderful performance by MJ - batting and bowling like Alan Davidson.....

lol..
who said that?

quite a few, find one of the Broad injury threads

I don't know if people have a vendetta against Broad because he threw the ball against their cowardly wicketkeeper, or they just know nothing about the game, but fact is he is a top quality cricketer, and he will be missed in both the tests and ODIS

not all over yet. If the innings is still going strong by tea tomorrow, then there are serious problems.

Well, broad right now is being missed only for his batting, tremlette has done a better job than broad so far. Finn should be out once broad is back

Also, zoni might be cowardly now but wasnt back then, it was broad who was cowardly with his childish tactics :D

Epic "@#$%-you" performance from MJ, sticking it up to all of us who knocked him for looking like a carthorse. The thing was, he DID! I don't know what they did to him in the nets, maybe whipped him a few hundred times to put the fear of God into him, but he's come back galvanised and full of confidence.

The team looks a changed team too. Sometimes all a team needs is a big century, a blinding catch, a hostile spell decimating a batting order, some kind of catalyst to instill (or re-instill) their self-belief. MJ's might be a spell that could turn a match and possibly a series. Most importantly you need a bit of luck, and we had it for a change with the wicket of Prior.

MJ's given the OZ batting a chance to make amends. Now they need to take it, while England are off balance.

What's the record fourth-innings chasing score at the WACA?

414 by SA I believe, and it was with relative ease.

That was obviously a very special effort.

But by all accounts, the game is not over yet.

People dont like Broad cause he comes across as being an arrogant ***** and acts like he is above the laws of the game. Daddy dear has rescued him way more than once. Even Nasser Hussin and Atherton was on his case for breaking the law and getting away with it.

Must admire Ponting's captaincy today. He is doing a good job

Actually, he is not. The only thing he's done right has been that he has set attacking fields for MJ once he got a roll on. Before that it was the same old shyte. Oh, and backing MJ for that referral. That's another thing he got right.

Yes but what does that have anything to do with England returning true to form? :yk

just pointing out that it must be a bit depressing when your own team hasn't won a test series for over four years so you start celebrating two bad sessions for a team that has just totally caned you.

That was on a pancake wicket that Brad Stodge scored 202* on. This wicket is a bit different. It will be a lower scoring game.

Oh and that was all MJ and Harris. Ponting is one of the worst captains in international cricket.

404 I think by SA 2 years back and it was a similiar match to this. AUS scored somewhere around 300 and MJ took a 7fer I think and bundled out SA for 200 odd and was set a target of 404 and SA chased it down with only 4 wickets down. CLASSIC!!!!!

Bringing back Harris for STrauss wicket. I know he not a great captain but he is having a good day. Acknowledge that.

BTW, OZGOD, what did I say before this test? Australia need to return to their roots and they need a wicket with some bounce.
