As things stand at end of Day 1, Australia the happier side but a quick loss of wickets this morning could well change the complexion of the game.

Think England will need to be careful with the bazball thingy at Lord's - conditions not conducive for that.

The security situation on England grounds needs a good rethink - the players could have easily been hurt by one of these protestors.

==

Speaking on the players’ move to interrupt despite being asked not to confront the protestors before the match, David Warner, in a press conference after Day 1, said:

"In that instance, we wanted to protect the wicket. We were told to stand away and be careful. We know what they are trying to do to the wicket, so for us, it was about protecting the wicket and the best interests of what we felt out there. I don't know what that chalk could have done to the wicket, but it would have been a long delay."

Steve Smith is what Indian fans think Kohli is 👑

No Indian has ever claimed that Kohli is superior to Smith in Test cricket so I don’t know where you are coming from.

Plenty have claimed such a thing and continue to so despite former Kaptaan's purple patch being over 4 years ago.

There are idiots everywhere, you can’t factor them in.

There are also Smith boot licking idiots in Pakistan, New Zealand, England and even in India who claim Smith is a better ODI batsman than Kohli because he runs in World Cup knockouts.

The Eng bowlers have taken revenge on their own batsmen for throwing away wickets on flat tracks. Now the batters have to score above 400 on a pitch that has plenty of movement.

Eng will hope the sun comes out when it their turn to bat

This could be a problem for England

England has since issued an update on Pope, who was assessed by their medical team to determine the extent of his injury.

"Ollie Pope is off the field after hurting his right shoulder and is currently being assessed by the England medical team,"

According to Daily Mail, England vice-captain Ollie Pope is unlikely to return to fielding on Thursday regardless of the extent of the damage to his right shoulder.

England in huge trouble. Aussie bowlers will have their tails up later today, especially if conditions remain overcast. Huge huge problems for England.

Root eyes taking evening session attitude into day two

Joe Root, who took two wickets with his off-spin yesterday, believes England can make some early inroads today if they carry on with the attitude they showed in the evening session on day one.

"It wasn't our best day and with the conditions we had we wouldn't have liked to have been batting yesterday, Root said.

"We created a few chances we didn't take, but that's how Test cricket can go sometimes.

"Our best period was the last hour-and-a-half of the day and we approached that really well, and if we can take that same attitude into today then we'll give ourselves a really good chance.

"With a brand new ball and similar conditions, if we can get things right this morning then we can find ourselves in a very good position."

Pope injury update

Ollie Pope, who was forced from the field with a shoulder injury yesterday afternoon, was expected to take part in a net session ahead of play today.

He may not return to field for England this morning when Australia resume on 339-5, but is still expected to bat at No 3 for the hosts when their first innings commences.

Can England bat well enough to get to 300-350 on this? Will Australia let them? It won’t match the Australian total, but it gives them a chance of bowling out Australia a second time and embarking on one of their signature day 4/5 run chases.

Steve Smith is the best batsmen of this generation and his led his country to multiple world titles. This includes a WC in the so called King's format.

Decent little comeback from England, taken 4-42 now.

Lets get a dec from the Aussies once Smith gets his ton.

Will Australia regret selecting Starc ahead of Boland here? He won't score too many rubs here and in these conditions Noland offers more by a country mile .

Aus sr not too shabby here, can't wait for bazball though, hope am not let down.

At this pace, Smith can stand outside his crease and attack the ball early instead of staying back in his crease .

Australia run rate = 4.14 in a Test - - what would you call it? Ultra BazBall?

Pope still sore but planning to bat at No 3

An Ollie Pope update from Nassar Hussain...

"News from the dressing room that Ollie Pope's shoulder is still sore, that's why he's not on the field. But he's still planning to bat at his normal place, which number three."

Good breakthrough from England there.

Another for young Tongue and a great catch.

Is Bazball not 5+ rr even reaching 6+

Aus have been striking 4+ quite often over the last few years.

Kohli has 32 more international centuries than Smith in the same “generation”, so it is laughable to say that Smith is the best batsman of this generation.

Best Test batsman easily, but Kohli stands alone on the best all-format batsman podium. In spite of his regression since 2019, he still light years ahead of his peers across formats which shows he brilliant he was in his pomp.

Smith’s better record in World Cup knockouts does not make up for the gigantic difference between him and Kohli in the ODI format overall.

Anyway, this is a debate for another day and another thread. Let’s stay on topic here before the moderators chime in.

316/3 to 397/8.

Extremely ordinary effort by the lower-order and tail. Australia were well on their way to a mammoth first innings total, but they have just given England a small window of opportunity here.

Nonetheless, if Australia sticks to their basics and play sensible cricket, they should still win because England will do what they do, self-destruct.

Oddly enough I agree with every word.

Agree.
Apart from a purple patch in tests from around 2014-18 Kohli has been an average test player.
In fact four years without a hundred he should be the first one to be dropped from the test side

7-100 is a good comeback, but I worry for England that the damage has already been done.

Starc hitting 90mph already.

Close call for lbw in the 1st over.

Very poor from Australia, losing 7 wickets for 100 runs and only batting 100 overs when they could have easily batted 140 + overs and completely shut England out

Bad batting and now wayward Starc will be punished. Really shoujd have stuck with Boland.

416 is probably slightly above par. I won't say Australia ran away with that. Cameron Green's bowling may work here.

England is scared of playing aggressive cricket against Australia. That is a definite shift in approach. There are enough gaps to exploit.

There was so much nerves sometime back. Both Cummins and Starc bowled some rank half volleys and released the pressure.

They need Boland and Hazlewood. Once pitch flattens with the effect of the roller England uses, it is a nightmare trying to control their batting.

I never rated Australian bowling. May be because every random guy did well against Australian bowling whenever we toured. Among the SENA countries this is the easier bowling attack to face for India. Nobody swings like Boult or Southee.

Surprised to see Boland not playing. You’d think he would suit Lord’s with his style of bowling being similar to Glenn McGrath.

Mcgrath was a beast compared to these guys. The release, variation, set up completely different league

Not even remotely in the league of Mcgrath. That guy appears to be metronic. But Mcgrath woud bring in ever so subtle variations.

Crawley now run a ball, bazball well and truly up and running.

Excellent batting. This is the bazball.

I can bet a non-bazball team folding under run pressure. See India fortnight ago.

Indian bazball was attempted by "Has beens" after IPL. lol That was just a foolish bravado. True bazball was employed by Pant in back to back tests in Australia.

Yes clearly McGrath an ATG and in a league of his own, but stylistically similar with their preferred line.

One of the biggest mistake ENgland has done is not having a proper spinner in the side. Australia is susceptible against off spin.

Damn, Crawley goes, but Eng still comfortable

Australian bowlers at the mercy of England batsmen. Only stupid shots can get some wickets for Australia. So far no penetration from any of the bowlers.

If England is smart they should see off Cummins. Every now and then he hits the rhythm perfectly. Now he is in the middle of a good rhythm.

If the batting gets better and better match will end in draw

If England can score 500 by the end of the day tomorrow, then they will have enough time to bowl out Australia in their 2nd innings. But then England bowling is full of trundlers.
