Timothy Castagne and James Maddison both scored brilliant goals as Leicester beat Brentford to move into the top half of the Premier League.

Castagne, on his first appearance of 2022 following injury, hit a swerving effort into the top corner from outside the box from Harvey Barnes' cutback.

And Maddison curled a fantastic 25-yard free-kick into the other corner after he was fouled.

It capped a good week for Leicester, who clinched a Europa Conference League quarter-final spot on Thursday in Rennes.

Brentford pulled one back late on as Bryan Mbeumo found Yoane Wissa, who drove a shot in from 20 yards.

The Bees pushed for an unlikely equaliser and Kasper Schmeichel had to save a deflected shot from Premier League debutant Tariqe Fosu.

Brentford - who were without Christian Eriksen through Covid - were hoping to win three consecutive top-flight matches for the first time in more than 75 years - but they left it too late to fight back.

Ivan Toney, who scored five goals in their two wins over Norwich and Burnley, was starved of service.

Pontus Jansson and Bryan Mbeumo both had headers saved by Schmeichel before Wissa's late breakthrough - but they could not find a leveller.

Thomas Frank's side are not yet safe from relegation, but sitting eight points above the drop zone a few points here and there should be enough.

30 points for Brentford — are they safe?

Or still at a slight risk?

Brentford coming back from 1-0 down to hammer Chelsea 4-1, big win for the Bees should all but cement their place in the Premiership next season.

Chelsea 1-4 Brentford

Christian Eriksen scored his first goal for Brentford as they closed in on Premier League safety by outclassing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Brentford produced a magnificent display to record their first win over Chelsea since 1939 as they came from behind to stun Thomas Tuchel's side with three goals in 10 minutes in the second half before adding a fourth late on to humiliate the Champions League holders.

The Bees enjoyed the better of the first half but were punished for not taking chances when Antonio Rudiger flashed a brilliant 30-yard finish past David Raya three minutes after the restart.

Brentford's response was instant and spectacular as Vitaly Janelt hammered home the equaliser two minutes later before the golden moment in the 54th minute as Bryan Mbeumo squared a pass for Eriksen to score in front of the joyous visiting support.

And Brentford were not finished there, Janelt breaking clear again on the hour to beat Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy before substitute Yoane Wissa completed their glory day in the closing moments.

Brentford are now on 33 points, 11 clear of Watford, who are third from bottom, and can now surely contemplate Premier League football again next season.

Eriksen provided the story of this truly remarkable Brentford win with that first goal for the club since making his comeback with the Bees after suffering a cardiac arrest playing for Denmark against Finland at Euro 2020 in June.

It was a wonderful moment but was simply the flourish on a quite brilliant team performance from Brentford, who thoroughly deserved one of the greatest victories in the club's history. The margin of the scoreline did not flatter them.

Thomas Frank's side took the fight to Chelsea from the first whistle, with striker Ivan Toney having three presentable chances as they went right on the front foot.

f there was any disappointment, it was the fact they did not cash in on that superiority, and they paid for it when Rudiger fired Chelsea in front.

Brentford's response was truly outstanding, giving them the result that surely means they will stay in the Premier League next season.

And there is no doubt Eriksen's presence has lifted those around him. Brentford have won all three games he has started since making his comeback as a substitute against Newcastle United in late February.

Eriksen may be the star name but this was the complete all-round display, with Toney giving Chelsea's vulnerable defence a torrid time and Janelt providing the cutting edge.

Brentford were also resolute in defence, with Frank and his players fully deserving the huge ovation they received from their ecstatic fans after the final whistle.

Chelsea can have no complaints about this defeat or the embarrassing scoreline as they were abject in a performance that was completely out of character with their recent efforts.

Tuchel's side won their six matches in March but were never fully switched on from first to last and paid the price.

If there is any consolation for Tuchel - and he will have to search very hard to find any - it is that this did not come in Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge.

If they repeat this horrible defensive performance, and indeed their entire shambolic effort, their hopes of retaining the trophy they won last June might be over.

Despite the usually reliable presence of Rudiger and Thiago Silva, Chelsea were never unable to control Brentford, who ran them ragged and actually should have scored more than four goals.

Chelsea must hope this is a blip, rather like their 5-2 home loss to the eventually relegated West Brom last season, because they cannot afford this when Real Madrid come here this week.

The likes of Karim Benzema would have been licking their lips watching this defensive fiasco.

Well done the BEES!

Surely one of the best results in their history.

Easily one of the biggest results in their history and well deserved too. Took rhe game to Chelsea and carved them over. Eriksen lifting everyone around him.

Another impressive win. 2-0 versus West Ham

Incredible season for them.

Now up to 13th place in the table.

Brentford delivered a huge blow to West Ham's top-four hopes as the Bees moved further clear of the relegation places with victory in west London.

Second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Ivan Toney saw Thomas Frank's side climb to 13th in the table, 12 points clear of the bottom three, to all but confirm their Premier League safety.

Mbeumo fired in from Toney's pass shortly after half-time, before turning provider for his team-mate as Toney headed in after 64 minutes.

The hosts had appeared the more likely to break the deadlock before half-time, but the heavily-involved Mbeumo headed at Lukasz Fabianski and also saw a powerful strike pushed away by the West Ham goalkeeper.

The visitors managed only one shot on target - a first-half Tomas Soucek header - in a subdued display, while Kurt Zouma was forced off early with an ankle problem ahead of Thursday's Europa League quarter-final second leg in Lyon.

West Ham remain sixth, six points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham in the race for Champions League football, having also played a game more than Spurs.

Bees rewriting history. Toney up to 12 PL goals surrounded by legends in the goalscoring charts.

Glad for them and it means another season in the prem for my local team.

The only worry i have is Toney goal scoring form, surely one of the bigger fish will start having a look sooner rather than later

They need to find a way to hang on to the superb Eriksen after his short contract expires, but I appreciate that this may be difficult.

Well done again BEES!

Up to 46 points in their first Premier League season and amazingly could even finish in the top half of the table!

A slick and brilliant win away at Everton for the Brentford boys.

A come from behind win against a passionate Everton desperate to stay up.

And a precious point for Leeds to lift them
out of the drop zone!

My prediction at start of season was a top 10 finish, unlike the prediction of so called aficionados of football on PP whom had predicted relegation.

I must say I am pleasantly surprised at how well they have done.

It’s been a season of three periods - an initial shock run of success, beating Arsenal, West Ham and Villa and holding Liverpool in a goal-fest.

Then an awful plummet after Christmas of six losses in the bounce as injuries piled up, with a nagging worry that the big sides had sussed Brentford out, and fear of a relegation scrap.

Then a rejuvenation based around the signing of Erickson and players getting healthy.

Superb result for the Bees. I believe they have rescued most points from losing positions in the PL. Special shout out to Thomas Frank deserves his nomination for manager of the year, he has shown tactical nous, has gotten the best out of the squad and was a key factor in getting Eriksen in.

Brentford not at the races today!

Not sure what was wrong with them. From the start it was one of their poorer and more subdued recent performances.

Leeds beat them and deservedly so, preserving their Premier League status in the process.

But a great season for Brentford. :)

Well done BEES!

They need to try and keep Eriksen…

The lower end of mid-table respectability suits me. The Bees surprised a lot of people and some more favoured sides.

A disappointing end to a brilliant season.
A huge off-season ahead. Likely to lose Eriksen and there will be significant interest in Raya and Toney. Bees need to add quality to Right Back, another centre back and someone to take Mbuemo position as whilst he is good just doesn't know where the goal is at.

What is Mbuemo like normally?

If he could have hit a barn door yesterday then Brentford would have at least drawn the game or perhaps even won it.

Leeds United are grateful to Mr Mbuemo this morning.

:)

8 goals in 38 matches, behind Toney (14) and Wissa (11). He has the most assists credited, with 7. Pretty far behind Toney and Wissa in Goals Per Minute, though - about one goal every six hours.

Mbeumo scored 15 goals in his first season with the Bees then 8 in the Championship promotion season so there has been a steady decline in goal output. Mbeumo has bags of pace and skill but is very one footed and very much a confidence player. I expect he will still be a key player next season but the board really need to buy a player to challenge his position.

Maybe he doesn’t feel he belongs in the big league. Confidence is a strange thing.

Bees begin their 2022/3 campaign with a draw at Leicester, coming back from 0-2 down.

That’s ok, an away point against a decent side.

The question on people’s lips is “will Brentford have the difficult second season” ?

The question on people’s lips is “will Brentford have the difficult second season” ?

Losing Eriksen makes it much harder. They have reinforced the squad overall but I think they will struggle.

A decent point at Leicester, we were awful for a lot of that game until Thomas Frank started using the subs.

On our prospects I think we will survive it will be a struggle at times. If we can get the Damsgaard signing through plus perhaps one more attacking quality player we should be ok. More concerned about the Ben Mee-Pontus partnership - need to get Ajer and Pinnock back and soon.

Denmark winger? Scored against England in the Euros?

Ben Mee looked pretty terrible yesterday. Was surprised when Brentford signed a centre back from a failed relegated team.

Hopefully I will bring my good luck charm this Saturday vs Man U at the Community Stadium in Brentford!

Going to a long and tiring day, I anticipate I may lose my voice!

Mee had been a solid player for Burnley but was injured for much of the campaign last season. Is just a backup until the first choice players are back. Would have preferred a younger quicker centre back but hey ho..

Think the Bees have a good chance of winning this one. They are a resilient side, greater than the sum of their parts, and United are just looking awful and vulnerable at the moment.

They have Eriksen though. Might work against Brentford psychologically.

Team news - Ronaldo starts for United, two Brentford changes
Brentford v Man United (17:30 BST)

Brentford boss Thomas Frank makes two changes from the side that drew 2-2 with Leicester last week with Mads Roerslev and Josh Dasilva - who came off the bench to score a late leveller against the Foxes - recalled as Vitaly Janelt and Yoane Wissa drop out.

Brentford XI: Raya, Hickey, Jansson, Mee, Henry, Norgaard, Roerslev, Jensen, Dasilva, Mbeumo, Toney.

Substitutes: Wissa, Ghoddos, Onyeka, Strakosha, Lewis-Potter, Damsgaard.

Brentford XI

GOAL - Brentford 1-0 Man Utd
Josh Dasilva

Taxi for David de Gea!

The Manchester United keeper allows a fairly routine attempt by Josh Dasilva to slip past him and into the net.

It's the worst possible start for United and Brentford's tails are up.

GOAL - Brentford 2-0 Man Utd
An absolute disaster for Manchester United!

David de Gea tries to play it out from the back but Brentford are swarming all over their opponents with the high press.

They lose possession and Mathias Jensen, who moments earlier fired narrowly over a free-kick, tucks home.

What the hell is going on???

Brentford have scored more goals against MUFC in the first half as they have scored in every previous match put together since WW2…

COY 🐝🐝 🐝

Well done Bees!

Taking pitiful United to the cleaners.

What has happened to MU with their galaxy of internationals?

Brentford produced a stunning first-half performance as they scored four goals in the first 35 minutes to condemn Manchester United to a humiliating defeat (4-0) at Gtech Community Stadium.

Josh Dasilva put the hosts ahead when his strike from distance somehow eluded United goalkeeper David de Gea.

Mathias Jensen doubled the lead after dispossessing former Brentford player Christian Eriksen, with Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo goals putting Thomas Frank's side four up during an incredible first half in which they dismantled United in stunning fashion.

The defeat is United's seventh in a row on the road - their worst run since 1936 - while it is the seventh time they have conceded at least four goals in a league game since the start of last season.

While Brentford can bask in a historic win, United boss Erik ten Hag faces the unenviable task of lifting his players in time for the visit of Liverpool to Old Trafford on Monday, 22 August.

Fun fact : Man U at bottom of the league, the last time this happened, was in 1992, the inaugural year of the EPL - Man U went on to win the title!

£424M for Man U squad
£55M for Brentford squad

Price vs Value. Price is what you pay, value is what you get. :)))

You have to admire Eriksen, quitting a successful side to help a struggling bottom of the table team.

It was amazing, but the heat was unbearable at times. It felt like 45. We were sitting behind the Man U goal in first half, so witnessed all 4 goals at close range!

The weather this weekend is a bit too hot for football really. Not surprised that there were a few 0-0s in the PL, as players will have burned out quicker. But no excuses for Man U conceding 4 goals in 40 minutes!!! :))

:))) :))) :))) brilliant!

You have to hand it to Ten Hag. He has taken just two games in charge to make ManUre even worse.

Brentford are in for a long hard season if they can only put four past this drop zone cannon fodder.

Clearly they are no good in the second half. They must learn to play the full ninety minutes.

One of the lucky Bees fans to have attended this. Wasn't expecting this especially given the roasting conditions but what a performance. Ronaldo and Co better check their maps to see where Rotherham is as they will be playing them next season at this rate.

Copied from Whatsapp group:

Why are all these journalists spending time talking about every issue to do with Man Utd.

They are a team of overpaid, under skilled, under committed players with a poorly run club trading on past glories!

In fact, they are relegation bound rubbish.

So let’s instead focus on Brentford.

A brilliantly run club, who under the careful but progressive ownership of Matthew Bentham, and the great tactical coaching of Thomas Frank, have built a club, which in every department, from top to bottom, from side to side is in total harmony.

Everyone knows their position and what they have to do at Brentford, whether on the pitch or in the back room staff, or handling enquiries from fans.

You can write to the CEO, about anything, including the catering, and he’ll look into it, and do something about it, and you’ll get a reply.

A club where in the lockdowns, directors were phoning fans to see how they were getting on.

A club where there is a real friendly atmosphere, and where fans get behind the team, and the team do everything they can in every match with full commitment.

The Bees team on Saturday consisted mainly of the same team who had played in the Championship, and cost about £55 million to put together.

Compare that with the nearly £500 million of Man Utd.

Brentford is a club that is a clear demonstration of how a football club can be run effectively. And achieve great results!

The result is more about the growth of Brentford, than the demise of Man.Utd.

:)

It's clubs like Brentford that restore my faith in football.

Well run, well managed, players and staff backing each other, good owners and a club heading in the right direction.

Aleksandar Mitrovic headed a late winner as Fulham beat Brentford (3-2) to earn a first win in 25 top-flight London derbies.

Brentford had fought back from 2-0 down before Mitrovic, who forced David Raya into a couple of fine saves, finally found the net with a guided header at Craven Cottage.

Fulham had led after 44 seconds when Bobby Decordova-Reid tapped in from close range, before summer signing Joao Palhinha doubled their advantage with a thumping header.

Christian Norgaard may have been fortunate to avoid a red card for a late challenge on Jay Stansfield but he opened the scoring for the visitors with a sweetly struck volley straight from a corner.

Ivan Toney had two goals ruled out for offside before dragging the visitors level in a first Premier League meeting between the two sides.

But a first win of the season sees Fulham move up to fourth in the table after maintaining their unbeaten start to the season, while the Bees drop to fifth.

A kick in the guts for Bees fans. Deserved a point there.

Narrow loss. Fulham and especially Mitrovic thus far looking better than we all expected. That’s football. Onto the next one for the Bees.

(Btw — does this result mean that Fulham are now better than Man United?) :P

Mitrovic will soon sign with MUFC to help them avoid relegation.

Substitute Vitaly Janelt scored a late equaliser as Brentford denied Everton a first Premier League win of the season.

Anthony Gordon had put the Toffees on course for a much-needed victory, firing home a well-taken opener after 24 minutes.

Brentford struggled to breach the visitors' defence, and hit the woodwork three times on an afternoon that appeared destined to end in frustration.

But Janelt popped up with the equaliser six minutes from time, converting from close range after Keane Lewis-Potter's near-post flick-on from a corner.

While Everton have added Neal Maupay from Brighton, much of the transfer speculation surrounding the Blues in recent weeks has focused on Gordon's immediate future, with Frank Lampard denying reports of a £60m bid from Chelsea on Friday.

With the 21-year-old regarded as one of Everton's brightest prospects and a popular figure among fans having come through the club's academy structure, the Blues have been understandably reluctant to let him go.

But if he does leave before Thursday's deadline, he will do so having offered an exciting glimpse of his potential here.

He took his goal very well, controlling Coady's excellent long ball before firing an inch-perfect left-footed shot across Brentford keeper David Raya and into the Spaniard's left-hand corner.

Everton fans now face a nervous wait to see whether he will remain their player after the window closes.

Thomas Frank watched his side put four past Manchester United in their last home game, but the Dane will be wondering how they managed only one goal on an afternoon when they put the Everton defence under severe pressure.

While the visitors offered little threat besides Gordon's goal and a James Tarkowski chance, the Bees somehow trailed at the break despite creating a series of excellent opportunities during an entertaining first half.

Bryan Mbeumo missed two of those, while Mathias Jensen and Ivan Toney both saw efforts come back off the woodwork, with Yoane Wissa sending his rebound over the bar after Toney's header struck the frame.

Brentford continued to create chances after the restart with Christian Norgaard's acrobatic effort rattling Jordan Pickford's crossbar after Jensen's long throw-in found the home side's skipper.

Pickford got down quickly to beat substitute Janelt's header away and the hosts' penalty appeal for a handball against Alex Iwobi were waved away.

But with time running out, Janelt escaped his marker and poked Lewis-Potter's flick-on past Pickford to salvage a point and give them five points from their opening four games.

2-1 up against Leeds. Come on you Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!

Ivan Toney passed the 50-goal mark for Brentford in style with a superb hat-trick to condemn Leeds to a second successive Premier League away defeat.(5-2)

Top scorer Toney placed a powerful 30th-minute spot kick beyond Illan Meslier to bring up his half-century, with Luis Sinisterra judged to have fouled him following a lengthy VAR intervention and a pitchside monitor check by referee Robert Jones.

Having calmly extended his perfect record to 18 successful penalties for the club, Toney scored for the Bees from outside the penalty area for the first time since arriving in August 2020, curling a glorious strike into the far corner of beaten Meslier's net from a dead ball position.

The visitors had gone close when Joe Gelhardt, who replaced injured forward Rodrigo in the starting line-up, poked his finish wide of a post after a crafty one-two with Jack Harrison.

Summer signing Sinisterra atoned for his costly foul on Toney with his second goal in as many league games shortly before the break, skipping past Rico Henry after collecting a Ben Mee flick and drilling a composed low finish beyond the advancing David Raya.

Former England international Patrick Bamford, who was introduced at half-time as Leeds boss Jesse Marsch looked to build on the momentum of his side's reply, troubled Brentford with his direct running and sent a shot wide within minutes of coming on.

Toney punished Leeds to make it three before the hour mark, seizing on a defensive mix-up when Diego Llorente failed to clear with a perfectly-weighted chip from outside the penalty area to beat the stranded Meslier and desperately backtracking captain Robin Koch.

Marsch's frustrations were compounded when he was sent off as Brentford pushed for a fourth, receiving a red card after urging Jones to use the monitor to review a challenge by Aaron Hickey on Crysencio Summerville.

The American had to watch from afar as Bamford misfired from point-blank range and Marc Roca shot straight at Raya from close quarters, only for Bryan Mbuemo to almost immediately restore Brentford's two-goal lead by slotting beyond Meslier.

Substitute Yoane Wissa put his name on the scoresheet in added time, pouncing on slack defending to charge inside the penalty area and coolly convert a fifth.

Brentford's second win of an unbeaten opening three home games lifts them to seventh in the table, while Leeds slip to ninth and are still seeking their first victory on the road this season.

Good win over Leeds today.

Up to 9th place now.

Toney looks a quality striker.

I like the way he takes penalties. Two short steps and bang, must be very strong.

Glad to see Wissa come on and get a goal.

Bournemouth extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to four games after a stalemate with Brentford at the Vitality Stadium.

Chances were at a premium for both sides, although the hosts may have felt unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty in the first half.

Jordan Zemura burst onto the ball and looked to be tripped by Kristoffer Ajer's flailing leg, but referee Thomas Bramall decided to stick with his original decision despite being referred to the pitchside monitor.

Brentford had the better of the few opportunities in front of goal but Ivan Toney could only fire over the crossbar from close range after Josh Dasilva's cushioned pass.

The Cherries have now failed to score in their last three home games, despite stretching their unbeaten run to four games for the first time since October 2018.

The hosts remain 12th in the table, while the visitors drop down to 10th.
