What's new

The Brentford FC Fans Club!

Brentford today showed today why they have been the number 1 form team since the re-start after the world cup. Well organised defensively and also also dangerous going forward. They deserved to win todays game (so they should be dissapointed with a draw) and Thomas Frank is doing a superb job.

Super Bees. What a result.
I don't know if keeping the squad fresh has helped. All of the Bees players (bar Raya) who participated in the World Cup were home after the group stages. And Ivan Toney not being picked for England probably helped.

A draw against the league leaders is a good result for the Bees.

Another solid performance from Brentford.

Such a tough team to beat, always give 100% and don't make it easy for anyone.

Brentford continued their impressive unbeaten Premier League run with a last-gasp equaliser against Crystal Palace.

The Bees are now 11 top-flight games without defeat after a late header from Vitaly Janelt denied Crystal Palace victory.

Bryan Mbeumo's cross was met by Janelt who sent the home crowd wild deep into stoppage time.

Substitute Eberechi Eze had opened the scoring for Palace with his fourth goal of the season, beating Ethan Pinnock at the back post to get on the end of Michael Olise's cross.

Chances were few and far between in a cagey game with few clear-cut opportunities.

Brentford captain Christian Norgaard had their best chance just before the hour mark when his half-volley was struck into the midriff of Vicente Guaita.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has reportedly admitted to multiple charges that breached the Football Association’s betting rules.

It was revealed in December that the 26-year-old has been handed 262 charges in relation to betting offences.

Toney has been hit with hundreds of charges related to betting

The alleged breaches stretch from 2017, when he was at Newcastle, to 2021 following his move to the Bees from Peterborough.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Toney has pleaded guilty to many of the charges that are against him.

The report adds that an FA disciplinary hearing is said to be imminent, with the striker also contesting some of the charges.

He is thus expected to be set for a lengthy ban that will begin before the end of the current campaign.

The Mail’s chief sports reporter, Matt Hughes, who broke the story, told talkSPORT: “I think his back was against the wall from what I’ve been told given the number of charges he was facing and the extent of evidence they collected.

“I think it was a five-month investigation took place into his alleged betting and charging him with so many count, they clearly felt they had a very strong case.

“I think he’s hoping to get ahead of it by pleading guilty to some, contesting others in the hope that maybe the ban, if he’s given a ban, will start sooner rather than later and therefore will apply over the summer which means he will miss fewer football matches.”

When asked about how long the ban could be, Hughes added: “I think it is a matter of months rather than games based on the precedence of a couple of Boston players that were found guilty a couple of years ago for I think, again, several hundred betting breaches and they were done for I think over six months.

“Joey Barton obviously got 18 months a few years ago for over 1,200 bets. The truth of the matter is we don’t actually know the detail of what games he is alleged to have bet on and if he was involved with them, that will be the key.

“We know he didn’t bet against any of his teams when he was playing but it’s possible, and I stress we don’t know, it’s possible he bet on a teammate to score or some sort of level of involvement.

“They would be seen as aggregating factors which could lead to a bigger ban if that were the case.”

Toney has been the subject of a lot of transfer interest given his performances for Brentford and a ban could therefore affect future interest.

It remains to be seen just how long the striker could be banned for

Hughes said: “I think he’s unlikely to get a move this summer because whatever ban he is given is likely to still be in place at the start of next season I would have thought,

“You’re not going to be a £50-80million player if you can’t play him are you? I don’t think it’s the end of his career, I think he will get a big move from Brentford at some point.

“He’s only 26, he’s playing so well and if he takes his punishment, serves a lengthy ban and comes back towards the start of next season or halfway through next season.

“I still think there will be big bidders coming in for him next January or the following summer, but unlikely to be this summer.”

Such an absence would see him miss out on the chance to play for England in their upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine in March.

It could also impact the rest of Brentford’s season given his 14 goals in 21 Premier League appearances so far this term.

Ivan Toney: Brentford forward 'worried' about FA disciplinary process

Ivan Toney says he is "worried" about the Football Association's disciplinary process after media speculation surrounding the length of his potential ban for gambling-related charges.

The Brentford forward has said the FA told him details of his upcoming hearing would remain confidential until a decision was made.

Some news outlets have reported that Toney will be banned for six months.

Toney was charged with 232 breaches in November and a further 30 in December.

The 26-year-old has accepted breaking FA betting rules before his appearance in front of a disciplinary panel.

It is understood he has admitted many of the offences but is contesting others. FA rule E8 bans players from betting on games, or sharing information for betting purposes.

Toney posted on Instagram: "I was shocked and disappointed to see press speculation yesterday and today about the FA investigation process concerning me after I have been told by the FA that it is a confidential process until any decision has been made.

"It is especially disturbing for me to read that the FA is saying I shall be banned from football for six months before there has even been a hearing, and it does make me worried about the process.

"My lawyers will be writing to the FA to request that they conduct a leak inquiry as this is the second time stories have appeared in the newspapers - the last time was just before the selection of the England World Cup squad.

"As I continue to be told the investigation is meant to be confidential, I am unable to provide any further comment. I shall continue to concentrate on my football."

The alleged breaches took place between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021, during which time Toney represented Scunthorpe United, Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United and Brentford.

The forward has scored 14 goals in 21 Premier League games this season, helping Brentford to ninth in the table and in contention for European qualification.

The FA has declined to comment.

Fantastic season continues with a 3-2 win over Fulham.

Continuing to scrap with Fulham and Brighton as unlikely contenders for a European spot.

If Brentford qualify for a European spot this season, I will cry with tears of joy!

Amazing performance this season, even more amazing considering the dark clouds over Ivan Toney!

Excellent. Fulham are tough, organised and good on the break like Brentford. and it could have gone either way.

Pound for pound based on "footballing resources a club" has Brentford are best in PL. Well organised, tough to beat, a threat up front vs any team. Unbeaten in 12 games, Thomas Frank has done brilliant.

I hope they make it into Europe as would be good to see a side like this ruffle feathers of the bigger sides.

Brentford are really good this season. There don’t seem to be any clear weaknesses to their game or in their squad. Their excellent goalie seems to be eyeing a move away however, so they’ll need to replace him appropriately.

As you say, pound for pound, Brentford are on top!

Its good for a club like Brentford doing well, if the got into Europa league or conference league it would be fantastic. There was probably a rocky patch last season in the 3rd quarter of the season where your performances dipped and sometime you think that a clubs 2nd season in Prem a team could get found out, but instead the club has improved even more. Brilliant manager and recruitment.

Another great season.

However a tough period coming up if Toney is banned.

This team just keeps on going and performing despite not spending stupid money like some teams do.

The man who racially abused Toney has been banned from all grounds for three years and given a suspended prison sentence.

Good win tonight - 2-0 away at Southampton and now only 1 point behind Liverpool.

I really enjoyed the Brentford performance last night. Go hard at the beginning of the game, execute a set piece and grab the first goal, then spend most of the remainder of the game patiently playing off the ball, soaking up pressure and frustrating the opponent — and finally, wrap it up by knocking in a decisive second goal at the end on the counter attack. It was the perfect Premier League away performance. They’re going to continue to win a lot of games with this gameplan.

Brentford continue to impress

When the teamsheet was released with Toney's name missing, it raised the question of where Brentford's goals would come - considering the forward had scored 20 of the 52 they had in the league at kick-off.

The Bees did not need to worry.

The biggest compliment you can give them is they looked a Premier League side - and a dangerous one - without the England international.

Frank will only be annoyed that his side failed to win by a more handsome margin.

Wissa was denied by a superb one-handed save in the first half, before Ben Mee's follow-up was blocked on the line.

Mbeumo and Wissa both missed chances early in the second half, while the former also saw a powerful stoppage-time header saved, as they continued to overrun a lacklustre Hammers.

Brentford have now taken 34 points from a possible 54 at home this season and while Europe may now be out of their reach they have confirmed themselves as an established Premier League outfit.

Another good performance today.

They've become a solid Premier League side nowadays.

Impressive brand of football and difficult to beat.

Super proud of the Bees. Coped well without Toney something they will have to get used to.

Ivan Toney has reportedly appeared in front of a disciplinary panel amid the multiple betting offences charges he faces.

The Bees are expecting the 27-year-old to receive a ban after he admitted multiple charges of breaching FA gambling rules.

Brentford striker is facing punishment by the FA over betting breaches

Toney was charged with 232 breaches of betting rules in November, with the incidents claimed to have occurred from when he was on Newcastle’s books in 2017, to when he joined Brentford from Peterborough in 2021.

He was then charged with a further 30 offences at the end of December.

According to Sky Sports, Toney appeared in front of a disciplinary panel on Tuesday.

It remains to be seen what punishment the Football Association will dish out on Toney, and how long he could be banned for.

Toney was charged with 232 offences in November, with a further 30 in December

Brentford and the FA will not be making any comment on Toney until a decision has been made.

With the Premier League season set to conclude by the end of the month, it looks likely that any ban will come into effect next campaign.

And that could see potential suitors deciding against a move for the England international in the summer.

Toney has enjoyed a stellar term so far, having chipped in with 20 goals and four assists in 33 top-flight matches.

Toney has scored 20 Premier League goals this season

Only Manchester City marksman Erling Haaland and Tottenham forward Harry Kane have scored more than Toney in the Premier League.

Speaking last week, Brentford boss Thomas Frank slapped a £100million valuation on the player.

He said: “Ivan Toney can be worth £100m in my opinion.

“What would you pay for a striker that guarantees you 20-plus goals?

“20 goals for a mid-table club, what can he do at a bigger club? He can mature like a fine wine.”

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been banned from football for eight months after he accepted breaking Football Association betting rules.

==

Ivan Toney has been suspended from all football and football-related activity with immediate effect for eight months, which runs up to and including 16 January 2024, fined £50,000 and warned as to his future conduct for breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules.

The Brentford FC forward was charged with 262 breaches of FA Rule E8 in total between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021. The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these breaches and he admitted to the remaining 232.

His sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission following a personal hearing. He is permitted to return to training only with his club for the final four months of his suspension starting from 17 September 2023.

The independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for these sanctions will be published in due course, and The FA will wait to review them before commenting further.

Brentford FC notes the decision of an independent Regulatory Commission to issue an eight-month ban from all football and football-related activity to Ivan Toney with immediate effect.

Ivan was charged with breaches of FA rule E8 and had a personal hearing earlier this week.

Brentford FC is currently awaiting the publication of the written reasons of the independent Regulatory Commission. We will review them before considering our next steps.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney would be blocked from any attempt to get around his eight-month football ban by joining a club outside England.

Toney was suspended until January 2024 and fined £50,000 by an independent panel after admitting 232 breaches of Football Association betting rules.

The ban, which the FA will enforce, only applies in England.

But it is understood the governing body will apply for the 27-year-old's suspension to extend worldwide.

That would prevent the striker from moving elsewhere on loan to serve his punishment.

The FA is still to see the independent panel's written reasons for Toney's ban.

It is understood if Toney did move away from England, the FA would be required to hand over the 27-year-old's registration.

At that point, it would tell world governing body Fifa and the buying or loaning club's football association that Toney was banned, which would trigger the suspension to be applied worldwide.

The FA did apply to Fifa for a worldwide extension in the cases of two other English players banned over betting rule breaches - Kieran Trippier and Daniel Sturridge.

More recently, Fifa accepted an application to extend a ban imposed by the Italian federation on former Tottenham managing director Fabio Paratici, a decision which prompted his resignation from Spurs.

Toney's suspension starts immediately, but he will be allowed to return to training on 17 September, four months before the playing ban expires.

His breaches took place between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021, during which time he represented Scunthorpe United, Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United and Brentford.

Toney has scored 20 goals in 33 Premier League appearances this season, helping Brentford into ninth place in the table.

He will miss Brentford's game at Tottenham on Saturday (12:30 BST) and the final match at home to league leaders Manchester City on 28 May (16:30).

Toney, who has one England cap, is under contract at Brentford until 2025.

Interesting now how Brentford will cope in 1st half of next season with Toney banned, they probably will need to bring another striker to help them next season.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank believes Ivan Toney's future is with the club and says they "will do everything to be there for him" after the striker was banned from football for eight months.

Toney was suspended and fined £50,000 after accepting breaking Football Association betting rules.

The 27-year-old will not be allowed to play again until 17 January, 2024.

"I've been in contact with him. He's disappointed and sad about the situation," said Frank.

"His future is with Brentford, there's no doubt about that."

Ivan Toney: Football Association to block any attempt to get round ban by leaving England
'Toney's career for both club and country is now uncertain'
Toney's suspension starts immediately, but he can return to training with Brentford four months before it ends on 17 September.

"We are waiting for the information so we know what we can do. What he's allowed to do, especially for the first four months," added Frank.

"One thing is for sure, we will do everything to be there for him, support him and be aware of the mental health in it.

"He's made some mistakes, but we need to be there, and want to be there, for him and help him. We just need to know what we are allowed to do."

Frank said, like Toney, he was waiting until the independent Regulatory Commission published its written reasons for the verdict before talking about the specifics of the case.

However, he did say "in general" gambling was an issue "we need to be aware of in society", despite Brentford being sponsored by a betting company.

Frank added: "It is a challenge, for me personally, all the advertising for gambling done by clubs [and] individuals in the game - I think that's an issue, for me.

"I don't know the full details of how much support or education the authorities provide. I know the Premier League and FA have a lot of initiatives in place that try to educate people out there.

"Education is the key thing. Across the world, education is the number one thing if you want to change a culture and mindset. That takes a lot of hard work and patience."

The 232 breaches Toney has been found guilty of took place between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021, during which time he represented Scunthorpe United, Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United and Brentford.

"We need to be aware of the mental health in this," said Frank.

"Ivan is a footballer but he is also a human being that has family, a partner, young children, a mum and dad, siblings and friends and he has been on the front pages quite a lot.

"We need to do whatever to support him in that aspect."

Toney has scored 20 goals in 33 Premier League appearances this season and, even though his FA ban started straight away, Frank said a hamstring injury would have ruled the forward out of the club's final two games of the season against Tottenham and Manchester City.

"Now it's done, he [Toney] has got a very good mindset of, 'OK, it is what it is and then move

Brentford have done ok without Toney in games this season notably a 3-1 win against Liverpool. No doubt over half a season he will be missed though players like that aren't readily available. I think Bees will still be ok next season will do will to emulate this season but recruitement has generally been decent and other players will have to step up to assist and score more. Toney would have been sold in the January window had there not been the threat of a ban, I'd like to think Bees extend his contract and then cash in next summer.

I'm hoping we sign Reiss Nelson or get Smith-Rowe or even Balogun - probably wishful thinking.

Balogun and nketitah would both be good for Brentford, even Nelson on a free as well.

You defo would need cover as half season is a long time to not have your main forward.

Well done Brentford winning 3-1 at spurs. Might not make Europe, but still an excellent season for Brentford

I went to the game. Spurs really do have a world class stadium and hell the WiFi there was excellent throughout the afternoon. A shame Spurs do not have much of a team, they will be in serious trouble next season if they don't invest the money in selling Kane properly.

Bees were superb so proud of them, Bryan has blossomed late this season has a gorgeous left foot.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney was given a reduced ban from football because of a diagnosed gambling addiction.

Toney, 27, was banned for eight months for breaking Football Association betting rules - including betting against his own team.

A psychiatry expert who gave evidence to the FA's regulatory commission diagnosed Toney with a gambling addiction and concluded he needed help.

As a result, the commission reduced an 11-month sanction by three months.

In its written reasons explaining its sanction, published on Friday, the commission said Toney had admitted repeatedly lying during his initial interviews with the FA.

It added he had since ceased gambling on football, though not on other sports, and is "determined to address his gambling problem with therapy".

The FA initially wanted to impose a 15-month ban on Toney because he attempted to conceal his betting, knowing it was against FA rules.

This included betting through third parties and deleting relevant messages from his mobile phone, it said, then knowingly giving "clearly false answers" during his interviews with the FA.

The commission did not uphold all of the FA's claims.

His ban was reduced to 11 months given he pleaded guilty to all 232 charges before being further reduced to reflect his diagnosed addiction.

Psychiatrist Dr Philip Hopley twice interviewed Toney before his diagnosis and the commission said his evidence was "well reasoned and highly persuasive".

Brentford have said they will support Toney with his addiction.

"The club will now be doing everything possible to provide support to Ivan and his family to deal with the issues raised in this case," they said in a statement.

"We consider this matter closed and look forward to welcoming Ivan back to training in September.

Brentford missed out on a place in next season's Europa Conference League despite Ethan Pinnock's late goal earning the Bees a narrow victory over Premier League champions Manchester City.

The Bees needed to win and hope that Aston Villa and Tottenham both dropped points to clinch a seventh-place finish, but Unai Emery's side beat Brighton while Spurs cruised to victory over Leeds at Elland Road.

Pinnock, who signed a new four-year contract with the club on Saturday, sent a low drive into the bottom corner after Kevin Schade's teasing cross was headed into his path by Bryan Mbeumo.

Cole Palmer forced David Raya into a one-handed save early in the first half, before Ben Mee and Vitaly Janelt went close for the home side at the other end.

Brentford felt they should have been awarded a penalty after half-time when the ball appeared to strike Rico Lewis' arm following a goalmouth scramble, but VAR failed to intervene.

The defeat ends City's 25-match unbeaten run across all competitions.

Brentford have signed Netherlands goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Freiburg for a reported £11m.

The 29-year-old, who has won four international caps, joins on a four-year contract subject to international clearance and a work permit.

He kept 13 clean sheets in 34 matches for Freiburg this season, the most in the Bundesliga.

"I'm a ball-playing goalkeeper. I try to bring calmness into the squad," said Flekken.

"I'll always try to direct the guys in front of me - I'll help them to help me.

"If you had told me seven years ago when I was in the third division of Germany that, one day, I would be playing in the Premier League, I would have probably knocked you down."

Brentford manager Thomas Frank said: "He's a player with a lot of quality.

"He's a very good shot-stopper and comfortable with the ball at his feet. His distribution is very impressive."

Brentford finished ninth in the Premier League this season.

Ivan Toney says missing last year's World Cup was a bigger punishment than the ban he received for breaking Football Association betting rules.

The Brentford striker was banned for eight months in May after admitting to 232 breaches of FA betting rules.

He was charged in November and missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup.

"Support is good, but how I am, I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me," he told the Kick Game YouTube channel.

"Even though I miss eight months of football, that was the biggest punishment, to miss out on a World Cup - everyone's dream - it is bigger than missing eight months of football."

Toney won his first England cap as a late substitute in the 2-0 Euro 2024 qualifying win over Ukraine in March, having received his first call-up to Southgate's squad last September.

The 27-year-old, who was given a reduced ban because of a diagnosed gambling addiction, will not be allowed to play again until 17 January 2024.

He can return to training with Brentford on 17 September, four months before the ban ends.

"I done what I done before, the punishment is the punishment and get on with it," Toney said.

"I just have to focus on when I come back training. I want to be a different animal when I come back. It's going to be frightening."

Toney was the Premier League's third highest scorer last season with 20 goals and helped Brentford to a ninth-place finish.

It’s possible that the club believes that Ivan Toney's value may increase over time so they are keeping him.

Ivan Toney: Brentford striker 'free' to play after eight-month FA ban expires

Brentford striker Ivan Toney marked the end of his eight-month ban from football with a social media post declaring he was "free".

Toney, 27, is now able to play for the Bees after a suspension for breaking Football Association gambling rules.

Toney has scored 32 goals in 64 Premier League games for Brentford.

"It's like signing a Premier League striker who can score 20 goals because he's proved it," said Bees manager Thomas Frank of Toney's return.

"Every team would be happy to sign a quality player like him. Ivan is a top player but he's also very good at making the whole team better."

Toney has not played a competitive match since 6 May 2023 for 262 breaches of the FA's betting laws and was handed an eight-month ban from all football activities.

Toney, who has been linked with transfer interest from Arsenal and Chelsea, is set to be involved for Brentford on Saturday when they face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

"If Ivan can write it his way, no doubt he would like to come back, do fantastically well and give something back," said Frank after Tuesday's FA Cup third round replay defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

"He missed playing football, missed being part of the team. It's a team he's really enjoying being part of, with some good mates, enjoying their football together, enjoying playing for Brentford and for the fans."

If the replay at Molineux, which Brentford lost 3-2, had been held 24 hours later, Frank suggested he would have played Toney, joking that he is an "okay" player.

In his build-up to returning to competitive action, Toney scored a hat-trick for Brentford's B team in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Southampton Under-23s and last Saturday scored a Panenka penalty in a friendly against Danish side Brondby.

"I have a lot to repay them and I can't wait to try and do that," Toney told Sky Sports recently, when discussing the support the club had shown him during his time away from the pitch.

Brentford have signed Tottenham's Spanish defender Sergio Reguilon on loan until the end of the season.

The left-back, 27, spent the first half of the season on loan at Manchester United but that deal was terminated by the Old Trafford club this month.

He joined Spurs from Real Madrid in 2020 and spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid.

"This is a very good signing for us," said Brentford manager Thomas Frank. "Sergio is a perfect fit for us."

He added: "We've been talking for a while about how we need a good left-back, and we managed to get a very good left-back.

F"He fits what we want. He's very offensive, has a very good cross and a very good left foot.

"He's got the experience we need to complement the rest of the squad and he's a good character.

"We need him, but I also think he needs us to show how good a footballer he is. I'm convinced that this will be a positive partnership."

Ivan Toney: Brentford striker's return 'massive' for club despite transfer rumours

On a six-minute 'walk and talk' wander around Brentford's training ground with in-house media, he strolls through the players' canteen. Ben Mee looks up and asks Toney whether he is available for the weekend, sarcastically stating no-one could possibly know given the amount of interest the striker's return has generated.

"Big dog's back," says Toney, repeating it for emphasis.

Whatever he is feeling privately about his return to the game eight months after being banned by the Football Association for breaching gambling regulations, outwardly Toney's demeanour will be the same; confident, self-assured and light hearted.

"It's massive, no doubt about that," is Brentford boss Thomas Frank's assessment. "It's like signing a Premier League striker who can score 20 goals."

Brentford fans will already be looking anxiously over their shoulders, with numerous clubs being linked with a move for the 27-year-old this month and the England international himself telling Sky Sports on Wednesday he "wants to play for a big club".

But, after a run of seven defeats in their past eight Premier League games, Brentford find themselves uncomfortably placed just three points above the relegation zone before Toney's comeback game against Nottingham Forest at Gtech Community Stadium.

Frank confirmed in Friday's pre-match news conference that Toney will captain Brentford on his return and is "bossing" it.

"He's like an eight-year old-boy, he just wants to go out and play," said Frank. "Just that pure joy of playing football.

"I'm looking into the eyes of a player who is very committed, very excited. I'm pretty sure he'll be ready."

Toney needs to rediscover his old form pretty quickly too for the club he joined in August 2020.

Reading through the written reasons behind the ban imposed on Toney by a three-strong regulatory commission chaired by David Casement KC, Brentford can be thankful the striker was not suspended for longer.

Described by the commission as "a prolific gambler", Toney could have been ruled out for longer. The FA wanted at least a 12-month ban. Had Toney not, eventually, admitted his guilt, the commission said it would have been 15 months, given the seriousness of some of the 232 offences.

They included 13 bets on his own team to lose, all in matches in which he did not play, while 11 were against former club Newcastle when he was on loan elsewhere.

Even after the eight-month ban had been agreed, the FA argued it should either be extended or delayed to the start of the current campaign given it included a 10-week period when there were no matches.

Had that been the case, Toney could not have sparked more January transfer rumours with his desire to play for a "top club".

When asked about a move away this month, he told Sky Sports: "I don't know. You can never predict when's the right time to move elsewhere. But it's obvious I want to play for a top club, everyone wants to play for a top club and fight for titles.

"Whether it's this January that is the right time for a club to come in and pay the right money, who knows."

Not that Brentford insiders would have been surprised. Toney is not one for holding back.

Whether he thinks about it afterwards is another matter. "Talk is talk," was his observation around the noise generated by his comeback.

In fairness to Toney, issues around his suspension have not affected his return.

The frontman said: "I always kept on top of things. I didn't let it go away and try to chase it."

But this is backed up by reality, as there was not much of an acclimatisation process needed when he returned to training in September.

Toney came back to the training ground as soon as he could, with Brentford adopting a deliberate policy of getting him to play a certain number of games, moving up towards 90 minutes, all tailored to getting him as prepared as possible for the Forest game.

Club officials observed Toney was in remarkably good shape for his first training game in October, even though it would be another three and a half months before he could play in a 'proper' match.

Toney's hat-trick for Brentford B against Southampton in a match behind closed doors on 6 January suggested the 'pre-season programme' has worked perfectly.

The only times when Toney has had to work on his own were during international weeks or when the first team were preparing for a midweek match. That time has been put to good use on individual training drills. Throughout this, manager Frank has remained a point of contact.

Frank knows he needs Toney to help Brentford get out of trouble with the kind of run they last experienced two-thirds of the way into their debut Premier League campaign in 2021-22.

On that occasion, it was five goals from Toney in victories against Norwich and Burnley that got them moving forward again after they also found themselves just three points above the relegation spots.

"That's fair," was Frank's reply when it was suggested most people would now look to Toney as the man who will make a positive difference to Brentford's season.

"And it allows us to win when he makes the difference, so it will be a fantastic story on Saturday."

A chance to reset the season then?

"Yes, in a way it is, no doubt about that," added Frank. "We've had a tricky spell, every team in the Premier League goes through that, even Manchester City and Liverpool - although that's more if they lose a game and draw one. We had that a little bit in the first season, now we have it in this season. We will get out of this spell as well."

For all the talk of wanting to play for a big club, Brentford fans have continued to back Toney.

From 2021-22 to 2022-23, only Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland and Son Heung-min scored more than Toney's 32 goals and, in that period, only Kane's goals won more points for his club than Toney's did for the Bees.

They know eventually he will get his move but recognise what he has done for their club. That is why the atmosphere around Saturday's game will be even more intense than usual.

Toney is appreciative of that - but he is also scheming. He has a goals target for the remainder of the campaign, which he will keep to himself until he reaches it. And he also has a celebration in mind for Saturday if he gets the goal he has been dreaming of for the past eight months.

"I have to be careful what I do," he said. "But you know me, you've got to be a bit spicy sometimes. But I will think of something that is kind of mellow."

With big clubs circling, an England place to nail down for Euro 2024 and Brentford's survival in the Premier League to ensure - it's going to be a big few months for Toney.

What's going on with Brentford. They've been on TV a lot recently but seem to have lost every time I've watched them.

Frank is in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle if they keep this up.

Not heard the calls that Frank would be able to replace Mikel lately. Where you at?

If he ends up competing with the likes of Luton, Forest, Everton ( deducted points) and a poor Palace team then a lot of people will be humbled who talked him up a lot.

I think his next job will probably be West Ham.
